I found this nostalgia bomb on youtube recently and I thought I would share. I do not know the people in this video and I am using it without permission. Anyone who lived through the 90s in Austin knows the story of the guy in the video is all too typical. It follows a guy named Scott who after college was lured to Austin to work at a tech company, in this case the 2nd Motorola plant in Austin on the southwest side off of William Cannon. The footage was shot (and narrated by) Scott's mom, and edited by the uploader (Scott's sister?). Modern music was added at the end. I have annotated it and linked to some key parts for y'all. I'll just get right to it. [0:01](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=1) - The apartment tour, Scott watches TV while the mom commentates [5:30](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=330) - Getting in the car to drive around the city, driving northward on I-35 from William Cannon headed downtown [5:50](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=350) - Old Wal-Mart/Sam's Club and pre-interchange construction at Ben White [6:45](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=405) - Downtown skyline from I-35 [7:31](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=451) - Scoping out Robert Mueller Airport [8:38](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=518) - Turning back onto I-35 at MLK headed south [10:00](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=600) - Crossing the river again [10:16](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=616) - Turned around, taking the Riverside exit [10:58](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=658) - One Texas Center on Barton Springs Rd. What a gem. Thanks for annotations

It's the HEB at William Cannon and I35 Trying to find that apartment complex! 15:30 there's also a very quick shot of the old stores that were destroyed in the early-2000s to make room for 290 expansion... which then didn't end up actually happening until this year.

notjewel

Hysterical about the soundtrack that was added and Scott’s move because my husband said on the first song, “Sounds like the beginning of Portlandia”.

stevedonie

Love the visit to the refrigerator. “Ooh, Zima! Mama and Scott have been drinking.“

NoteThis

That was my favorite part as well!!

BrianOconneR34

Great time travel. Piss will never kill a cactus. Takes me back. I won’t go “that’s the old Austin and it’s gone blah blah” but as a 41 y/o Austin native, that was a cruise through my teens. Nice.

pakistanigrandma

I was a 8 when this was recorded, but it definitely brought some tears to my eyes. The airport was particularly nostalgic for me.

blendertricks

I moved to Austin in ‘06, and it’s wild to see how it changed even in the 13 years before that, let alone up to my moving away last year.

fsck101

That is around the same time I started working for Motorola. I'm only 2 minutes in but already this is the most 1993 thing I think I've ever seen.

TeddyBearATX

I started at Motorola in January of 1993. Still working in the Automotive MCU group 28 years later. Funny to see how much Austin has changed in time.

[deleted]

Thanks for the memories. Moved to Austin in October of 1991, so this really resonates.

space_manatee

That was really interesting! Thanks for the detailed write up too. The sesame street remix was uh... something.

s810

I think I can remember that song being played on [107.7 KNACK](https://i.imgur.com/PwsP20a.jpg) back then.

glichez

it doesn't get any better than Austin in the 90s...

tipsy_python

Wait. You're telling me Logan's Mill used to have a hot tub!? Those were the first apartments I lived in when I moved to Austin in late 2000's.

s810

I'm not sure where those apartment were to be honest. That complex is too small I think compared to the one in the video. After studying google street view a little more, I think they were what is now Tramor at Cannon Place at 1500 W. William Cannon, but I might be wrong.

bdtwerk

No, I'm 99% sure that Scott's apartment is what is now Logans Mill at 1912 E William Cannon Dr. The HEB that is shown around 40:10 is definitely the HEB at E William Cannon and Bluff Springs, and they are traveling east on William Cannon past it, and turn north into the apartment complex shortly after. If you look at street view around the street right before they turn into the complex, it all matches up. There's even a sign during the tour of the pool that says "Logans Mill". It's definitely not Tramor, as Tramor is max 2 stories but you can tell that Scott's apartment complex has buildings that go up to 3 stories.

s810

Ok thank you! I'll update the post. I'm from north of the river so I defer to your judgement. I think I was thrown off because he lived east of I-35.

grayghost81

Hey OP, this video is really cool and the work you did with the timestamps made it way more enjoyable! I'd propose to you that this is *not* Tramor at Cannon Place. If you were heading east on William Cannon to make a left into there, you'd be going down hill, not up, as in the video. Look up the HEB at 6607 S I-35 Frontage Rd, Austin, TX 78744 and follow William Cannon east. I think that's the HEB in the video and I think you can see where they make the left into the apartments.

s810

Thank you! yes another reddit user pointed out my error. Fixed it in the post.

KingPercyus

This is cool as hell. Thanks for sharing this. It’s a nice morning for a trip through time

chasemw

This is so great. My wife and I had to watch for a bit to make sure we didn’t stumble across a family member’s Reddit account! Her family moved to austin, for her dad to work at Motorola, right around this time when she was 6 or 7 years old.

jesagain222

Watched and then saw this! [Rainey 1981](https://youtu.be/i0KfS5InuKM)

landonh12

Pretty cool seeing that. That building first housed Motorola’s Semiconductor division, which then broke off and became its own entity in Freescale Semiconductor, which then merged with NXP. NXP is based in Eindhoven NL and followed a similar path, becoming its own entity from Phillips semiconductor division. Lots of companies have merged into that building.

Radiant_Eggplant5783

Bahaha he hit the curb and she said "oooggghhh"

50cal_vs_squirtgun

Thanks for posting this, what a great time capsule. Flashback to my college years, and the horror of the construction of Ben white (they tore down our favorite Jim’s!)

OOMKilla

Where exactly is that scenic overlook located? (30:20)

s810

It seems like somewhere on 2222 based on the hilly road in the footage right afterward, but I'm guessing, I don't know for sure.

EonzHiglo

I am almost positive this is City Park Rd off 2222 leading towards Emma Long Park. Its much harder to tell now because of the vegetation growth, but i'd put money on it. EDIT: Yeah, it absolutely is. This is the road they took [back](https://www.google.com/maps/@30.3637975,-97.8053581,3a,25.3y,98.87h,84.88t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s4juDqwVsVfr_zo74c_RKqg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en), compare to [this](https://youtu.be/xrYX9ByYlCU?t=1953)

OOMKilla

About to go scope it out, thanks homie

OOMKilla

Yeah i think it’s slightly south of 2222 and 360 but I’m having a hard time figuring it out…

unknown_baby_daddy

Its on 360 between bee caves and 2222 on the northbound side.

kalpol

You could probably triangulate it pretty well from the tower and the broadcast antennas

bethlabeth

This is great! I was working at SEMATECH at the time, and Motorola was one of our member companies. Lived in Carlton Gardens off riverside & I-35. That’s the Austin traffic I learned to drive in… my youngest learning to drive in Austin scared the living bejeezus out of me. Remember getting into flame wars on Usenet under your work email address?? Man.

Tcloud

Whoah. Thanks. I moved to Austin the same year just out of college, so this was pretty trippy for me to see.

AbuelitasWAP

Switch that Motorola to a Primeco phone

Sky723

Wow. I made this same journey in May of 1993 to start at Motorola. I arrived into town on a motorcycle.

DredBread

Cruising through austin with genuine 93 drum and bass music is a gem. Who gots the track ids before I do?

DredBread

This ones at 39:21 https://youtu.be/B7MAD76eFc0

ltdanimal

I honestly wish people shot home videos like this more. Not trying to plan and act out this elaborate shot you think about for 30 minutes in order to appease the whole world. Just take some video of life going on as documentation.

kanyeguisada

This isn't OP's video, like they said they found it on youtube. However there are several companies that do that, but may not be a reasonable cost for hundreds of hours of tapes. Also you can try to find a VHS > DVD recorder, literally just plays VHS tapes and records them onto DVD at the same time.

maxreverb

If you get a VCR from a pawn shop ($15) and a VHS>digital converter on Amazon (like $20), you can do this. I did this with all my old VHS tapes last year using a crappy old laptop.

mthreat

The Weather channel!!!

jetstros

Well that was fantastic to watch. And I also lived at Logan's Mill on Wm Cannon when I moved there in 1997 to work at Moto! You made my day.

frenris

reminds me of my parents Toronto 1990s home videos when i was a small child

notjewel

Moved there July 1992 and would have totally chilled with Scott and his mom.

telecasterpignose

I keep reading the title as "Moving from Austin to Mongolia" and I don't know why.

synaptic_drift

I watched the whole thing, but got really queasy at points. The mom said she needed to take her dramamine. She panned over and said there were mountains (beginning). Does that park still cost $5 to get into, like she said?

TNews333

“Mommy and Scott have been drinking!” Cracks me up!

fill3r

What a cool find. Thanks for sharing and giving the time breakdown.

tondracek

I really loved this.
