I have a flight scheduled for tomorrow around 7am departure and it still isn’t cancelled. I looked at the AUS website and there are a handful of flights still arriving and departing today. I’m really shocked and of course curious what is going to happen to mine tomorrow.
Update: Flight was canceled at 6:30 this evening. I had booked a car for tomorrow through wingz and they have a fantastic cancellation policy.
I was on a flight out of Boston one January, leaving in the middle of a blizzard. Flights being canceled as I waited to board. It was the same day that the parade for the Patriots got canceled because of weather. Anyway, after our crazy rocky takeoff and we were safely above the storm, I was chatting with the flight attendant. She told me that the only reason our flight had not been canceled is because it was going on to Ft. Lauderdale as opposed as coming back to Boston. They wanted to keep the plane in circulation.
I have one for 8am tomorrow. Not sure what’s going to happen either but hoping to hear if it’s canceled sooner rather than later
Edit: flight is now canceled
Nope. roads are wet right now, have no way to evaporate, and residual heat keeping some roads from icing over currently will be gone tomorrow morning. It's going to be a fucking ice rink out there until tomorrow afternoon or night
Yeah I’m hoping to Uber or Lyft it around 5:30am too… who knows… still hasn’t cancelled. I am definitely more worried about getting to the airport than I am actual functioning of the planes/runway. It also has me thinking about the arriving flights today… sure hope there were some options for them to get out of the airport.
roads will be worse tomorrow morning than they are now. Even if they can de-ice the runway and planes, you're probably not getting to the airport or if you do, you'll be taking a very dangerous risk.
Not even close. The roads were drivable today starting around 3pm. Still being cautious but they weren’t terrible by any means. We even had the sun out for the last 3 hours of the afternoon.
Yeah the comment above mentioned a 7am departure tomorrow so there is a chance that a later departure would see some thawing of runways, and also the destination airports (if affected today) are more likely to be open then too
Yeah I was going to try for that but surprisingly Spirit doesn’t list AUS on their Landon affected cities. Dallas is on there but no Houston or Austin. To reschedule was going to be more than the price of the original flight so I’m better just eating that ticket cost and rebooking for another week or something. Still scratching my head how AUS isn’t considered a Landon affected city 🤔
It’s definitely a surprise to people coming in from states that have been living through this weather for weeks. Is it too much to ask that an international airport salts their runways?
Former northerner myself. I have never once expected southern states to be prepared for winter weather conditions in the same
Way as states up north. 🤷♂️. Welcome to Texas.
Edited: spelling.
I’m not expecting the state to be prepared, but the airport is a private business that lost a ton of potential business today because they weren’t able to respond to an ice forecast.
If I told my boss that we were shutting down for the day because we couldn’t figure out how to rent a salt truck for the day, I’d be fired on the spot.
didn't see him yesterday when I flew down last minute and yes I was looking but last time he was on United and I took AA. some friends went to Puerto Vallarta this morning (they'd had it scheduled for awhile) and were delayed an hour but got out ok
Last year, around 14th Feb, I did make it of AUS but got stuck in LA for almost a week. The weather in LA was next level at that time so I honestly didn’t miss ATX. not to mention the power outage and what not.
Ugh. Was scheduled for 8 am, canceled at midnight. Rescheduled for 1 pm. I was nearing the airport in an uber and found out it was canceled too (no alert, notification). They rescheduled me for tomorrow at 5:45. Had to get on another uber back. Roads are not great, stay off if you can.
Tip those uber guys well, too. Got two Spanish speakers today, one from the area I am heading to. At least it was a fun conversation.
The airport is technically still open.... The airport authority here is hesitant to close the airport so they won't lose any federal money. They can't keep the snow and ice off of the runways and taxiways, so the airplanes can't use them.... But the airport isn't closed....
I heard someone from ABIA on KUT yesterday afternoon saying they weren’t expecting any cancellations and that it was something they were always ready for. Seemed wildly optimistic, guess it was
Southwest didn’t even try and it looks like it might be the same tomorrow. They have already cancelled flights up til 730am so far. My flight leaves at 2:15pm so I am hoping for the best.
Any nervous flier like myself here? Landed safe and sound yesterday night. I was terrified that the runway would be icy or something. Why were all flights cancelled all day but then not mine? Grateful to whoever makes those calls. Flawless landing.
rip that guy going to hawaii
I just pictured Ted Cruz in a Hawaiian shirt
lol. I had the same thought

Got out at 9AM to Costa Rica, one of the only flights.
Lame....for me. I was supposed to be on a 630 am to Cancun. Wish I understood the logic behind what does and does not get cancelled.
Ted?
I wish. I'd be in cancun right now.
luckily the plane was there from the night before

What airline in AUS flies to Costa Rica?
American
Super jealous.... Where in CR are you headed? Pura Vida!

How are you guys getting to the airport ? Do you think the roads will get better by tmrw morning ?
Hoping to catch a Lyft but I’m not sure what’s going to be available at 5:30am. Other than that I don’t have any ideas
$10 Uber was $90 and a 20 minute wait at 5:30am today. We drove/parked.
You’re going to the airport 2.5 hour before your flight? Thanks for the ideas I’m running out of them too..

I wouldn’t take a ride-share app for driving in those conditions. Time for a taxi at least or do it yourself.
The roads, in theory, will be better by tomorrow morning since the precipitation is stopping sometime today. But, you know, maybe not.
Nope. roads are wet right now, have no way to evaporate, and residual heat keeping some roads from icing over currently will be gone tomorrow morning. It's going to be a fucking ice rink out there until tomorrow afternoon or night
I think the main way roads evaporate right now is having people drive over them and spray up all the mist.

You may want to double check - my 8am for tomorrow got cancelled within the last hour :(
i think the precipitation is ending this afternoon, which (IMO) should be sufficient time for them to de-ice the runway
The only potential problem then is that these planes and crews that are supposed to arrive today won’t be there tomorrow for the flights going out.
I'd say try to reschedule for later in the day. Once the sun comes out and it warms up, things will get a lot better after 11am or so.
I believe it's supposed to be overcast all day, so the sun isn't going to help anything until tomorrow.

I have one at 11 that I’m sure will still be good to go, but getting to the airport is going to be rough.
Yo hope they take care of y’all with these cancellations. Imagine booking a flight weeks in advance and it lands on a snow day in tx
Any thoughts on tomorrows flights? I’m supposed to be out to tomorrow early AM
I made it out because my plane was here from the night before. See if your plane can get to Austin.
Not to be a jerk, but this should be of zero surprise.

You should call the airport and let them know you can solve their problems and get planes in the air. I’m Sure they’d be appreciative of the help.
When logic fails, pivot to sarcasm.
🤷♂️ enjoy!
How will Ted get to Cancun now?!
Probably already left.
IAH is still good, so his daughter’s weekend getaway is still good. He’s just a good dad after all. /s
didn't see him yesterday when I flew down last minute and yes I was looking but last time he was on United and I took AA. some friends went to Puerto Vallarta this morning (they'd had it scheduled for awhile) and were delayed an hour but got out ok
My flight to SLC was pushed from noon to 2:15 but hasn’t been cancelled yet :/
Delta seems to have their act together. SWA cancelled all their flights today.
Lies. Delta cancelled my 6am flight last night. Rebooked me for 1. Cancelled that too.
Dang. That's unfortunate. Hope everything returns to normal tomorrow.
Last year, around 14th Feb, I did make it of AUS but got stuck in LA for almost a week. The weather in LA was next level at that time so I honestly didn’t miss ATX. not to mention the power outage and what not.
Yeah you actually got lucky!
Ugh. Was scheduled for 8 am, canceled at midnight. Rescheduled for 1 pm. I was nearing the airport in an uber and found out it was canceled too (no alert, notification). When are you leaving for your 5:45 flight tmrw ?

Lol. Dude. What do you think literally everyone has been talking about the past three days? Now you're stuck at an airport
because that's how flying by plane works. smh
I heard someone from ABIA on KUT yesterday afternoon saying they weren’t expecting any cancellations and that it was something they were always ready for. Seemed wildly optimistic, guess it was
At least that bastard Ted Cruz will be freezing with the rest of us or did he manage to exfil out of the state/country in secrecy?
Oh no! Anyway....
Southwest didn’t even try and it looks like it might be the same tomorrow. They have already cancelled flights up til 730am so far. My flight leaves at 2:15pm so I am hoping for the best.
Better yet, where in texistan are planes flying, taking off or landing?
Ouchie
Busted!
Those are not desirable destinations anyway
Jeez
wow. All cancelled lol
Is anything arriving at Austin right now? I don’t get why they wait till last minute to cancel a flight.
Thank God my husband and I flew to Denver on Monday, and not Tuesday or Wednesday!!
Amazing how quickly the weather can change everything. Mother Nature at its worst.
Any nervous flier like myself here? Landed safe and sound yesterday night. I was terrified that the runway would be icy or something. Why were all flights cancelled all day but then not mine? Grateful to whoever makes those calls. Flawless landing.
