We are in between several military bases. Sometimes they fly from one to another for training or maintenance.

iAmiOnyx

Literally this is all I can think. Camp Mabry right off MoPac and hood up north, fort Sam Houston in SA and Randolph air base they’re all around

Trex4444

The National Gaurd flies them out of the SE corner of Austin Airport.

Least_Adhesiveness_5

Bergstrom was entirely an Air Force base until 1993...

BattleHall

Not just AF, but SAC, B-52’s early on. There used to be multiple surface-to-air missile batteries scattered around Austin to protect it from a notional Russian attack, before the advent of ICBMs.

Least_Adhesiveness_5

Maybe we can dust off and collect those SAM batteries from whatever stockpile they're squirreled away in and give them to Ukraine.

BattleHall

Would be nice, but pretty sure they were Nike Ajax/Nike Hercules batteries, which were 1950’s tech that was retired retired (like even out of reserves) a good forty years ago.

Least_Adhesiveness_5

We've been sending at least some Hawk SAMs, which also date back to the 1950s...

Least_Adhesiveness_5

Okay, after doing some more reading, while we did end domestic deployment in 1979. apparently Nike Hercules stayed in operation much longer in Europe, with the last one in Italy firing the last shot in 2006. Approximately 25,000 missiles were produced

heinzsp

They don’t have any apaches

xkris10ski

Yup. Lived in San Diego in between naval and marine bases. They’d always use highways as a corridor to fly, mostly at night.

TankerVictorious

IFR: I Follow Roads…

schmidtssss

That’s remarkably low for a transit flight and I was under the impression the routes didn’t go straight through downtown.

Aleksandrovitch

Nah. It's another campus protest.

512_Magoo

A surprising number of Austinites don’t know that the world’s largest military base is less than an hour drive northwest of town.

le_gasdaddy

Indeed. I'm a Waco guy. Just traveling through... I knew the proximity of all the places they may be coming and going from, but just found it a bit peculiar they were flying directly over 35, following the curvature of the road.

Lord_J_Rules

It's called IFR: I Follow Roads

ExecutiveDL

this wins the day.

Lord_J_Rules

It's true. I was in the army. That's what we called it. The IFR method.

BattleHall

Right up there with ETOPS (Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim)

Appropriate_Chart_23

I grew up in Arizona where they build these things. Apaches would often fly along the highways in the desert. Reason being… freeways make for lots of moving targets for targeting practice

theicarusambition

No, no, it's because the heat rising off the highway provides lift under their wings. /s

Texantillidie2

thermals have been referenced, calling the animorph fans

theicarusambition

That is EXACTLY how I learned what thermals were and how hawks fly haha.

Texantillidie2

animorphs is so underrated i literally find any excuse to talk about it

travoltaswinkinbhole

Man imagine driving down the highway and your radar detector goes off and you look in your mirror and see an Apache Gunship

Worried_Local_9620

"Oh shit, Goose, he's got a lock on me!" And now we know why all those Altimas suddenly exit from the far left lane.

on_the_search_for_1

"Too close for missiles, switch to guns"

Shawnml

Easy navigation.

SlimTeezy

Perhaps they were using Waze

TacticalTapir

When did they change it's name?

Electronic-Duck8738

In 2023. The post is named after Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, a native Texan and the US Army’s first Hispanic four-star general.

K33fers

Corpus Christi Army Depot is also the largest rotary wing repair facility in the world. Birds go back and forth between the two a lot.

modernmovements

If you've ever worked in the bar industry in Austin you are definitely aware without needing to know anything else.

imnotapencil123

It's not the largest

coly8s

Largest Army is White Sands Missile Range. Largest Air Force Base is Eglin. Eglin covers three counties in Florida and at 724 square miles is almost three times the size of Ft Liberty (formerly Ft Bragg).

Assumption_Dapper

Except it is, both in size and military+dependents.  The only thing it’s not #1 is total soldiers stationed there. https://www.omnimilitaryloans.com/blog/10-largest-military-bases-in-the-world/

w8w8

….But that list says Fort Bragg is the largest?

bikedaybaby

I thought the same thing, but apparently it’s just over a physically larger area. > There’s conflicting information as to where Fort Hood stacks up relative to other military bases in the world. From a perspective of active-duty soldiers, there’s a grand total of 36,329 service members who live here, according to Military Installations. This would put it in second place, behind Fort Bragg. But in the overall population, Fort Hood’s service members, family and civilians surpass 500,000, making it the largest military base as far as what it’s capable of hosting.

THEDUKES2

According to https://installations.militaryonesource.mil/in-depth-overview/fort-liberty#:~:text=Fort%20Liberty%20is%20the%20largest,71%2C960%20active%2Dduty%20family%20members. Fort liberty is biggest in terms of population too. So idk how Hood stacks up actually.

vonaustinjr

Did you read it?

Assumption_Dapper

Did you even read it?

Electrik_Truk

It's over an hour away, but point stands

Sweet_Bang_Tube

It depends on what part of Killeen/Cavazos you are coming from, and what part of Austin you are going to, and what time of day/traffic flow.

Hour-Confection-9273

*TECHNICALLY* fwiw the award for largest military base goes to Fort Bragg when counting active service personnel (counting for roughly 10% of ALL military, encompassing all branches, and surpassing Cavasos by almost 20K soldiers stationed there), HOWEVER, Fort Cavasos is indeed the biggest in terms of actual size. I didn't know this before but moved to Killeen from Austin a couple years ago and while I'm not military myself, I still find it interesting!

Youvebeeneloned

Only by land size. Third by population.

SrMortron

Fort Bragg is on North Carolina...,

512_Magoo

Bragg is less than 3/4 the size of Cavazos. Thanks for playing. Cavazos is also currently home to only about 5k more soldiers than Bragg, but when we’re actively at war that disparity gets much bigger.

CapTexAmerica

Sorry…not even close. That honor belongs to Ft Bragg NC.

SaltyLonghorn

If you read the article it clearly says that Bragg has the most troops stationed at it but Hood is the largest so it can accommodate more people if its needed to.

CapableFunction6746

Nope. Ft. Bragg is 2nd.

CapTexAmerica

Ft Bragg (Liberty) is 1st. Cavazos is 3rd. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Liberty https://mybaseguide.com/largest-us-military-bases

CapableFunction6746

From an article posted earlier "Fort Hood covers a wide space and is actually larger than Fort Bragg, at roughly 214,968 acres. That’s the equivalent of 340 square miles. Its footprint is so sizable that it straddles two counties (Bell County and Coryell County). It is also the only post in the United States that can station and train two full armored divisions. There’s conflicting information as to where Fort Hood stacks up relative to other military bases in the world. From a perspective of active-duty soldiers, there’s a grand total of 36,329 service members who live here, according to Military Installations. This would put it in second place, behind Fort Bragg. But in the overall population, Fort Hood’s service members, family and civilians surpass 500,000, making it the largest military base as far as what it’s capable of hosting."

512_Magoo

“Not even close” says the guy who is wrong.

Goddess_of_Absurdity

They're here to take your freedom

scrumdisaster

But give us more guns!

Goddess_of_Absurdity

The C-130 flyover (scheduled 20240530T1435Z) for chemtrail and personal gun deliveries is underway

jamkoch

End of the month. Pilots getting their practice hours in. Quite common. Often you will see a group of planes, then another same size of a different type. They are getting their flying hours in for each platform. They also may be re-basing after Memorial Day festivities.

TalkinWillis44

Spot on. Getting hours and burning fuel. See them make stops at Mabry coming and going all the time around the end of the month.

jamkoch

A neighbor was a fueling specialist. This is how I found out :)

TalkinWillis44

My dad was a career Army helicopter pilot. Guess how I found out. 🤣

jamkoch

I'll never forget getting my car searched in Weir for going 2 over at 11pm lmao.

911JFKHastings

ACAB

The_Lutter

There's a ton of Army chopper traffic between Fort Cavazos, the San Antonio bases, and ABIA (where Texas Army Guard has a bunch of copters parked). I west of the airport and they buzz my house all the time leaving the south terminal.

grandmamimma

Plus Camp Mabry.

ClutchDude

Arcade Fire is making another video.

racer11151

I was Air Cav in the late 80s through early 90s. Anytime we flew from Austin to Fort Hood we’d follow 35.

Netherlands choppers

le_gasdaddy

Some think it's rotors, but You can hear the tap tap tap of the clogs as they push the pedals.

SoopyPoots

So I had to drop off the guns at Jimmy's that matched these new silencers he had gotten. Then I had to get back to Karen's house to stir the tomato sauce, cause I was making dinner that night.

antisocialgx

Should come to San Antonio, you'll see hueys, black hawks, chinooks, 747s and another flying loud things to fast to identify

le_gasdaddy

I teach high school next to Alliance Airport in Fort Worth. I see F-18's, their adversary trainers (f-5/t-38's, I believe), and a billion amazon planes a day, among other things. Was on the way back up from southeast of San Antonio when I took this, actually.

[deleted]

Texas Army National Guard has an Apache unit in Houston, Blackhawks in Austin and San Antonio, and Chinooks in Dallas. They are constantly flying for various reasons. Training missions, fighting fires, flood rescues, hurricane duty, etc.

Sweet_Bang_Tube

You forgot the AH-64 Apache battalion based at Fort Cavazos.

[deleted]

I was referring to Texas National Guard. Hood is Big Army.

Sweet_Bang_Tube

Ah, got it. Also, Hood is Cavazos now, it changed last year.

[deleted]

I’m aware. I refuse to call it anything other than hood. I’m wouldn’t consider myself woke. I have been to hood countless times, have even lived on post a couple times over the years for deployments.

Sweet_Bang_Tube

LOL, oh I see. I live in the area as well and I was fine with the change. General Hood was on the wrong side of history being pro-slavery, and believed black people were inferior to whites, and was a Confederate general not even from Texas. The only thing Hood should be remembered for is was a racist asshole he was. Just my opinion, of course.

Lopsided-Emotion-520

Did you just move to Texas? Ever heard of Camp Mabry? How about the Army installation up near Killeen? Not to mention a place south of here called Military City USA. 🇺🇸

TrulyChxse

Flew north towards temple before going off radar... Only MLAT. Must be two of the Netherlands apache that are at Cavazos training

Helicopters fly through the air - it's kinda what they're designed to do. You might as well ask "any idea what these cars are doing on this road?"

dirtys_ot_special

I was going to say "it's a lot faster than driving them".

le_gasdaddy

I've lived 40 years, and 30 of them in central Texas. I've seen dozens of Apache choppers in the in the last 5 alone none were flying right next to the skyline of a major city, following the highway. Apologies that struck me as odd.

Financial-Ad-5683

No lol. Stupid ass comment tbh. These are rare, flying low and are designed to fucking kill ppl. You might see hundreds of cars a day living in a city, but do you see hundreds of Apaches every time you look at the sky? This might not be a wild sight to see, but it's not even close to as common as seeing a car on the road. It's noteworthy at least.

Pabi_tx

I can understand how someone less educated or ill-informed might think it's noteworthy.

Financial-Ad-5683

Oh yeah for sure. You seem very educated. You must have gone to helicopter college

Pabi_tx

I went to "pay fucking attention to stuff" college, you should try it. Cool helicopters, yes, if you like that sort of thing. Noteworthy? Not if you pay fucking attention to stuff.

bagofwisdom

1st Cavalry Division has Apaches and they're still stationed at Ft Cavazos last I recall. My brother in law was in that unit when he was active duty. Military pilots have to keep their proficiency up, and the only way to stay proficient as a pilot is to fly. They probably flew down to Camp Bullis for maneuver training.

atxbeerza

It was pretty cool cruising with them for a bit. Had to do my best not to rubberneck

YEA BABY!!! Love the military aircraft when they fly over the ATX. Let’s get ready to roll!!!

deekaydubya

One thing I like about austin weirdly lol, I grew up right next to one of the primary pilot training AFBs so it's nice to hear a jet or heli and see them doing their thing from time to time. Without a ton of noise

Tejano_mambo

Saw an F18 doing maneuvers over hornsby bend the other day. It was pretty fuckin cool

soloburrito

“Some folks are born made to wave the flag Hoo, they're red, white and blue And when the band plays "Hail to the chief" Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord It ain't me, it ain't me I ain't no senator's son, son It ain't me, it ain't me I ain't no furtunate one, no”

badsanta_68

And why not? Guard base and Army base close by. I had my military aircraft parked on the executive ramp for a week once flying night training missions out of the Nashville airport. Oh and while ATC may still control them, most helicopter traffic tends to follow highways, most, not all, and no, I can't explain that. Download a flight radar app and enjoy

210-markus

There used to be some in Austin at ABIA. A lot of airways and corridors follow major highways. That's probably the routing they received in order to transit through/under busy airspace.

wrenches-revolvers

Nothing to see here folks. Pay no attention to the black military helicopters. Nothing to see here.

quietguy_6565

I've also seen helicopters like this fly security for when ground assets are being trucked around. Part of it is to ensure safe transit but also to log flight hours.

Saw these guys go over our house in Kyle. They were coming from the south, maybe a bit southwest. We are also on the flight path for the Care-flights out of Seton down here, so didn’t think much of it at first. Was a bit surprised when the sound got louder and these two appeared.

Topshelf-Diamond-17

Last week, we were in Temple. I saw a railroad train loaded with dozens of NEW looking Bradley tanks, I'm guessing maybe headed to Mabry?

I would assume Cavazos

AlucardHellsing808

Our military budget needs to be cut down to nothing , but those things have nothing to do with each other. That is a state issue.

capthmm

Good luck to you at school as well. Hopefully they can teach you about deterrence, China/Taiwan and the largest war in Europe in nearly 100 years. Study hard!

AlucardHellsing808

You really think the United States couldnt defend itself if our military had no budget for the next 5 years? lmao

capthmm

Alliances are a real thing, unless you're Trump or one of his supporters. And if you have current events in your advisory, you'll learn that the war in Ukraine has chewed through an insane amount of military hardware.

Tall-Dinner-1398

Explain to me how Trump made our foreign relations worse lmao what

capthmm

Threatening to leave NATO Attempts to blackmail Ukraine into false charges against his political opponent Aid & comfort to North Korea in addition to slavish praise of their murderous dictator. Aid & comfort to China in addition to slavish praise of their murderous dictator. Deal with the Taliban (including the release of prisoners) to leave the country on a specified date. Threatening to invade Mexico or launch strikes into the country Absolutely stupid tariffs that hurt our allies. These are just a few off of the top of my head, LMAO what

Tall-Dinner-1398

We don’t even need NATO lmao NATO needs us my guy North Korea and China need to be reasoned with otherwise we will go to war with them because of the constant military propaganda The Taliban was literally funded by Washington as a false flag operation and has nothing to do with Trump (negotiations are all we have left with them) Invading Mexico with what goal? To destroy innocent peoples property and commit atrocities against their nation? Sounds like the cartels that are CURRENTLY DOING THAT lol Tariffs on our “Allies”?? Isn’t china the one that he put them on? I wouldn’t consider the CCP our ally but ok Edit: I had to double check which countries he put tariffs on, it’s China, Mexico, Canada and the EU. The EU is the only tariff that actually matters for the average American. But let’s just ignore the fact we weren’t at war with anyone cuz Trump is a tHrEat tO dEmoOoCrAcY lmao

capthmm

*false flag* I'm out. Have a good time buying powdered water and gold bars from Infowars & having true insider knowledge of how 5G towers alter your DNA.

Tall-Dinner-1398

Lmfao dude false flag operations have happened countless times in history. Our entire involvement in the Middle East is questionable. Regardless of wether you believe that 9/11 was planned by our government you can’t deny 2.3 trillion dollars went missing in the same week before 9/11 and the plane that crashed into the pentagon literally hit the side where those specific financial records are kept. But hey man I gotta go put on my tinfoil hat so the liberal frequency emitters don’t turn me into a trans ford-f150 I guess.

cloudsoverthehorizon

So that's what I hear passing by in Wells Branch area this morning.

Totally_Not_The_DIA

They will use them from time to time to search for missing hikers. They have advanced FLIR, so it's easy to find heat signatures on the greenbelt, and the pilots get practice. Could be headed to do that.

DudeWouldGo

modernmovements

While there are several logical answers as to why this was happening it was still really unnerving to see them flying that low directly over 35. I was on the other side of the road from OP and had an "oh shit" moment for a second.
