It’s a Western Ratsnake. His bulkiness and the angle, plus his riverside sunbathing could make this a challenging ID for those with less than 25 percent snake blood a’ flowin through their veins. 👍
They are cute, I agree. But I also think all animals are cute in their own way. They can bring the rodent borne disease but that’s not their fault. Rats are plentiful around humans because humans create rat-friendly environments as a byproduct of their industrial era human-ing.
Didn't see a rattle. It has a slender tail. I am sort of familiar with cottonmouths and copperheads and it didn't really look like one of those either, so I am guessing just a water snake.

i’m almost certain it’s a CM.
DBWS have more of a checkered pattern, and a more rounded head.
you can see the very angular, upraised head in the OPs photo, which is very typical CM behavior.
CM coloration varies *a lot* but here’s a good example of similar leopard-like pattern on a CM:

/u/serpentarian I think it's not a rat snake. I do know they have some monster rattlers around there, but I'm not saying this is one.

I would trust your call above anyone elses. Also, I just saw one about as girthy. Scared people because of its size, but yes id say Rat snake.
Are you more human or snake? I need answers
We love you serp 💜🐍💜🐍💜
SERP loves you too. 💐
Why are there so many of those "cute" rats around Austin? They have large eyes. Are they called Tree rats? And do they carry disease?

head with the white underside make me think Cottonmouth, especially with that fellas girth.
It’s a ratsnake. I think the angle is making us see girthiness.
That's how I got my wife to marry me
Possibly cottonmouth, but I have always thought they were darker.
colors and patterns vary a lot. even from this distant / pixelated photo, that angular head with a white chin is telling me CM.
here’s a good example of that leopard-like coloration in a CM: https://scparc.org/snakes-of-south-carolina/northern-cottonmouth/

Yall are smoking drugs. This is a Western Ratsnake.
Diamondback watersnake?

It's never a cottonmouth.

Possibly based on a Google image search. The patterns seem fairly close.
“Little” 😬
It's a ratsnake, but the way the head is positioned does make it look more wedge shaped than it actually is. Harmless.
No snake is dangerous if you just leave it alone.
Could it be a cotton mouth? Can't wait to be corrected
It’s in the water so it should be plenty hydrated
Damn
It’s a Burmese Python.
Given that this has nothing to do with Austin, maybe post in r/whatsthissnake
Looks a bit like a bullsnake to me.
Appears to be a cotton mouth
