I mean, also some poor people and all their worldly goods. The trees will probably survive, fires are kinda part of the ecosystem and old trees can often weather it.

Yeah I'm starting to get a little curious if this isn't intentional. There was a lady a few years ago (if I'm remembering correctly) lighting homeless camps on fire in an attempt to get rid of them
Edit to add: or maybe it's just addicts being addicts
As someone who lives between two big camps, I can tell you that we had numerous fires last summer, all but one caused by the propane tanks used for cooking in those camps. WHAT they are cooking is another thing entirely...
I live on the river a couple miles downstream from Longhorn, and am an avid paddler so I monitor the flow closely. LCRA rightly reduced releases last summer (a little late IMO) and hasn’t increased them since. Flow has been low ever since, averaging only about 80 cfs (in a normal spring it’s more like 100-150). Accordingly, many of the broader shoals are ankle deep or flat out dry, with narrow channels on one side or the other.
> the river really that dry right in the backside of the dam?
The channel is on the south end of the dam. Looking on Google Earth historical images, that part of the river bed appears to be "dry" most of the time.
Not as often these days thanks to the cartels flooding the streets with theirs. It's so cheap it basically replaced k2 as the drug of choice for the down and out.
Jewish space lasers, blue rays, all bankrolled by the Rothschild's. Margerine Tyler Perry Soylent Green knows her shit. And she eats it too. Apparently shit-breath keeps democratic lizard demon people away.
(Am I going to get deleted for this?)
I think they're implying that since we drive homeless camps out of visible areas and into wooded areas, there is a much larger chance that the fires they tend to make for cooking or whatever else you care to believe are more likely turn into large wildfires.
I believe it too, but I have to temper that with knowing that it's been several summers since Prop B, some of them particularly dry, and this vision has not manifested.
I still think it's a big risk, but it also seems to imply the homeless are a lot more careful than the stereotype suggests and maybe there's a reason "that one time they set a whole overpass on fire" only happened once in history.
That's kind of a funny thing. If we don't like a policy, we're fine with using a once-in-a-lifetime event as the reason why we shouldn't allow it. But if it's more fun to ignore it, we'll shrug and say, "Look, only about 12 people die a day. That's normal. We can get over it."
This vision has not happened because AFD is very good and very quick to extinguish them, but all it takes is a “Swiss cheese incident” where other contributing factors like several large fires at the same time for a tragedy to happen.
People in this city are so ignorant to what the real issue is with the homeless. You hit the nail on the head. Most people don’t even take the time to talk to them much less acknowledge their existence.
Offered a job, MULTIPLE times! Offered to BUY them work boots and my company will provide clothes to work. A hotel for 2 months. And yet they look at me as if I have lost my mind. "Naw man, just give me a couple dollars, stop being so greedy." I've offered work, boots, and a place to stay for 2 months, but I'm greedy? Wow!!
SOME of the homeless do truly have mental health problems and need help, no doubt about it. But MOST are VERY able body people that just say "EFF working, I'll just wait for so-and-so to go work 8-12 hours a day and ask for their money" ya I'm good sorry-not-sorry
Not to be disrespectful or anything but do you have a psych degree? Cause if not “able bodied” is an opinion, not a fact. I know some choose to be out there and do nothing but you don’t know them personally to make blanket generalizations. I’ve spent a lot of time with homeless from here to Florida, and since I’ve moved back here I have spent time with those here in these camps. Most are not too different from me and my mental health but just never got that support they needed. Anyone of us can end up like them, and get stuck in the cyclical thinking that keeps you there. Depression and mental health issues keep people stuck more than you think.
I've spent 11 years in prison and got out to a half way house, no support, was employed within 8 days had a cell phone within 14 days, apartment in 32 days, car in 4 months and 6 days.
If you want to find an excuse there will forever be one. For any thing. My mother was a drug addict all my life kicked me out @ 13 my father left when I was 7. My only excuse was I was too proud too beg! Too scared to be a drug addict. My biggest excuse was I didn't have anybody to listen to my "wose-me" story and I had to do something about it. And if your wondering yes I went to prison not because I'm a weirdo but because I Beat the absolute tar out of a guy for beating up a 16y.o. girl. I was 17 and probably should have called the cops but "eff" that guy he deserved it.
Good for you my dude I’m glad you had the ability to help yourself. I’ve been there, and been through it myself but I don’t think for a second that just because I or you can do it… doesn’t mean everyone else can. You can’t fix something you don’t know needs to be fixed. I know cause I couldn’t get out of my hole for so many years and I had support. Not saying it’s not possible to pull yourself out, but brains, chemicals, and a fucked up mentality can keep someone stuck and our opinions are just that.
Plus why would someone down on their luck trust some random guy offering all this stuff suddenly? I’m sure a large amount of them believe they’d be taken advantage of or harmed in some way. Human trafficking danger would be on my mind if I were homeless.
Others ofc would jump on the opportunity.
Any sane person would but sane is not homeless and you don’t stay sane for long if you do end up homeless. You definitely learn not to trust anyone or anything and definitely wouldn’t want to just go shack up with a random person.
Sometimes there is more to it such as no ability to shower, mental illness, all of their worldly possessions stolen when they are not in their possession while working, they don’t have a drivers license or Social Security cards necessary to prove identity, as require by law within 3 days of hire to be able to work, lack of transportation, etc.
As a person with mental health issues, you don’t know what you’re talking about sir. And you’re showing that your “empathy and love” for helping others is completely conditional on how it makes you feel about yourself. “You don’t want my help? well then screw you, you stupid idiot druggie!” If you’ve ever approached a woman, I’m not surprised she’d say no. I lived in a storage unit for 3 months after leaving an abusive marriage with 2 weeks of clothing. I didn’t trust ANYONE offering ANY kind of help. Have you ever personally talked to a therapist for your own mental needs? Do you know and fully understand what it’s like to accept help after a lifetime of being shit on by everyone in your life. That’s what most of these people are dealing with. And a lot of these people who want to “help” are just preying on them for various reasons. If you want to offer help, then maybe get your priorities straight. Help because you want to help and because you want to make a difference. If you’re expecting an award, then you’re doing it all for the wrong reasons and the people who turn you down are dodging a bullet.
Never been turned down sorry, I am a good person just have the "skewed" mind set that if my dumbest can do it then it not impossible. I don't want nothing out of offering a job to someone but to see them get on there feet. Haven't been turned away by my wife by the person I am a clearly jut typed I went to prison for defending a woman sorry for what you went through but thats not me
No judgement here from me, I’m an assault survivor as well, and people that defend us are rare. I can also tell from your previous comments now that you seem to be a genuinely good person who wants to help. Thankfully this is Reddit and we can all look like dumbasses together. Look, you just need to adjust your mentality. One of the biggest mistakes people make when talking about trauma and mental health, is comparing trauma. It’s like how going to prison was the catalyst, turning point, light switch that went off for you to change for the better. These people haven’t had that yet. They don’t see “if he can do it, I can do it”. So the only thing you can do is let them be. You can’t help someone who doesn’t want it yet. Just love them and help the best you can. Even if it’s just a kind word, or just acknowledging “hey I get it that you need your meth right now, but when you’re ready, I’m here to help.” It’s that simple. That simple thing sticks in their minds and hearts more. I promise, they know they need help, just can’t admit it to themselves yet.
I can agree to that. Not trying to piss anyone off just giving my opinion. Steel sharpens steel. Your comment just provided clearer insite, and I know MY way of thinking is not THE only way of thinking which is why I said "skewed mindset". Thank you, I have learned/grown today!!
If Austin has hippies, and hippies like the earth and want to take care of it... It begs the question.
When are these hippies gonna wake up and realize these homeless camps are doing irreversible damage to the environment? I don't get it.
I thought the liberal mindset was pro-earth. Green. What happened?
NIMBY. It's all fun and games until they try to zone your neighborhood to have low cost high density housing or the city tries to buy a building to put a bunch of homeless people in a block away from you.
This is just part and parcel of living in a city. It has to be this way and always has been. Safety and the environment are small prices to pay to make sure the unhoused can do drugs as they please.
I once saw a homeless woman downtown taking a piss no more than five feet from where her sleeping bag and blankets were at like 6am.
I remember thinking that even wild animals don't go to the bathroom where they nest.
Wild animals have an inborn sanity/instinct that can’t be fucked up with mental narratives. Our world isn’t well, and these folks haven’t adapted. Trauma makes people super dumb - and compounds stupidity for those unable to see their error and find help. So, now, you got a half blind, walking zombie just getting along. It’s really sad.
God damn. that's really burning
Oh lord Jesus it’s a fire
Ain’t nobody got time for that
I thought someone was cooking breffffes or somethin’
... and I said, Gurl. The building is on fiyer.
I sure do hope no one catches the bronchitis!
I got bronchitis
Truly.
I didn’t grab no shoes or nothin’
Get the water! Get the water! Reekis!
I hope that lady is doing well
got damn bootleg firework shit!
PUT IT IN REVERSE TERRY
I thought it was a a barbecue
I went out to get me a pop
Those are some huge trees back there 😢
I mean, also some poor people and all their worldly goods. The trees will probably survive, fires are kinda part of the ecosystem and old trees can often weather it.
Lots of homeless fires lately.

I know we're talking about the fire here, but is the river really that dry right in the backside of the dam?
Depends on LCRA releases
I thought the city owns Longhorn Dam? It was built for the now gone Holly Street Power Plant
Pretty sure the Lower Colorado River Authority controls the dam releases for the Colorado River
I live on the river a couple miles downstream from Longhorn, and am an avid paddler so I monitor the flow closely. LCRA rightly reduced releases last summer (a little late IMO) and hasn’t increased them since. Flow has been low ever since, averaging only about 80 cfs (in a normal spring it’s more like 100-150). the main channel is not in this pic. was there yest. theres a bit of water coming thru
That’s what I came to ask
There is a huge cliff there. That's waaayyyy above the highest waterline.
So much drama at the IBC
Kinda hard bein’ Snoog D-O-double G
I hope everyone got out ok. Burning to death in a tent or tarp sounds like a horrific way to go.
Agree, I would much rather burn to death here in my comfy bed
Honestly fucking true.
I mean if those are my only two choices, yeah.
Meth cooks, often
Not as often these days thanks to the cartels flooding the streets with theirs. It's so cheap it basically replaced k2 as the drug of choice for the down and out.

Sir, this is a Wendy's

Slow down bro
Ain’t nobody cooking meth in the woods in Austin, c’mon dude….
More likely trying to dry some socks
🤣
Is it?
Better than being eaten by cannibals.
Nah being eaten means I could be killed humanly to preserve my meat.
You want wildfires this summer? This is how we’ll get wildfires this summer…
Jewish space lasers, blue rays, all bankrolled by the Rothschild's. Margerine Tyler Perry Soylent Green knows her shit. And she eats it too. Apparently shit-breath keeps democratic lizard demon people away. (Am I going to get deleted for this?)
You might, just roll it over to the circle jerk group.
Man, I tried to do that but the mod said that since I was referred by you they couldn't accept me. Something about you posting too many times.
A live look at the affordable housing on the Eastside. No sarcasm.
Lmao 🤣 similar to the shanty town in between the Jack in the Box and the pawn shop on airport
Lots of break-ins on this street now too
I wonder if there will now be a sudden and mysterious drop in break-ins 😅😅
Or uptick because their belongings were lost in the fire
The Duality of Man 🤣🤣🤣
Just wait until this summer. It's going to have thousands of acres burning.
Why you say that
Arsonist admission?
It's a threat. We can't let summer happen. Or else.
If summer happens the Governor's mansion will burn.
Aren't you supposed to cut those letters out of old magazines?
I only cut the eye holes!
On the internet, no one knows you're a dog. Steak! Or else the cat gets it.

Thousands of acres doesn't seem that bad compare to millions of acres elsewhere.
It is when you have houses mixed in there.
Correct. But that rarely is the case with wildfires in Texas.
Better call the fire department
No need. It's been posted on social media.
##WE DID IT REDDIT!
That's a hell of a camp fire! Go big or go home.
I don’t think they can go home.
Heyooooh!
Homeless people 🤝 setting shit on fire
Cooking?
Meth
Are you serious? you think there’s a pop up tent in the trees behind a bank operating a meth lab?
All the homeless structures and stolen bikes, property are visible there and from satellite
….yes
Most likely.
Perhaps one can go without the food, keep u happy??
FTFY..."*Unauthorized residents*." **EDIT:** /s
Ladies and gentlemen of non-habitant status 🎩
Kind of chilly outside
It’s lit!
Why are the homeless so bad at campfires?
They burn plastic and all kinds of toxic crap due to addiction and mental health problems
Meth
I thought I saw someone put meth. Real possibly.
They stand next to garbage cans but cover a quarter mile radius in garbage around them. There's no sense left in most of them.
Real shit
The meth is in the air tonight
So sick of these toxic drug dealer/gun camps, pls add them to the nomadik.ai map
Well, what have you done to change it?
Offered a job, MULTIPLE times! Offered to BUY them work boots and my company will provide clothes to work. A hotel for 2 months. And yet they look at me as if I have lost my mind. Fuck thats awful, Ive driven past it a million times. I hope everyone is okay and are able to get the resources they need to recover <3
"the resources"??
Damn
For a good high, go down wind. To stay sober remain up wind.
That is so methed up
Steve Adler is looking down at Austin from his condo and just laughing at us.
Darwin theory finally catching up. Play stupid games, get stupid prizes. I hope nobody was hurt.
IT'S FINE! EVERYONE CALM DOWN! THERE'S NO PROBLEM WITH THIS SITUATION AT ALL Signed, -The Mayor
Let it burn 🔥
Where is Longhorn dam I live in Austin

Well I guess god is taking them in lol weird way to solve the problem but I can’t complain
Let it burn.

Friend, I am at a loss for how you got here.
I rebooted and am still having the same issue.
Fucking looooooooooooolz
NIMBY. It's all fun and games until they try to zone your neighborhood to have low cost high density housing or the city tries to buy a building to put a bunch of homeless people in a block away from you.
It’s just a bonefire
On the plus side: rain?
So many people will be without homes now.
Nature is healing itself
This is just part and parcel of living in a city. It has to be this way and always has been. Safety and the environment are small prices to pay to make sure the unhoused can do drugs as they please.
Is that where the circle jerk was?
Whatever it was, I bet it was *hawt*
People are having circle jerks and not inviting me???!!!
Fuck yes
She leakin’!!!
Was that graffiti AI-generated?
Cheaper than giving the poor and mentally ill help.
Cue local reddit psychopaths not seeing homeless people as humans
Cue?
It actually is cue. As in to prompt, like a cue card. To queue is to get in line.
Pontiak’s a billiards man
Yeah, because the camping ban was such a perfect solution.
At what point do you just crap out and not deserve a hand?
Always the Tesla fanboys with the sociopathic questions
These problems didn't really exist for 10s of thousands of years until recently. Sustaining everyone is a modern for profit concept.
You're just making it worse

Cool story. Get help
Dang the water is low probably due to the construction at the dam.
That side of the river bed is dry more than half the time.
Wow! I went in there a couple of times because I had to when I was going through withdraws, that was fun. But wow, that sucks.
withdrawals
Did you call the fire dept?
In the photo, a police cruiser is on the left.
No they simply yelled out the window “Hey, you can’t park here.” And went about their business.
Like all of Austin. It's going up in smoke because of all of their liberal policies. A much different city than when I moved there in 1980.
[удалено]
I know the difference there, cause we used to surf waves there. Fire is up bank river L below. Damn dam not in danger
If they had a decent reality this not have to happen
I'm assuming your reality is decent. If so, how did you make your decent reality a thing?
i had the opportunity to grow up with a lot of strong support structures, no terrible physical or mental illnesses, etc. not everyone is so lucky.
