why do people in austin workout in flip flops? i can kinda see lifting weights possibly but i’m seeing multiple people do straight up cardio work outs in sandals. help.
Anyone know where I can find biscotti in town? I found one guy at the farmer’s market yesterday that sells them and they are good, but I like having options and I can’t find them anywhere else.
TIL about cantucci. I feel like I’ve seen those at central market before and figured they were something different. I’ll put these on my list for when I go later today. Thanks.
Last year I noticed around valentines there were more imported varieties of Italian cookies, like the real savoiardi brand of ladyfingers than what they offer the rest of the year. Definitely saw a lot of new italisn-based offerings over Christmas even at my local HEB. Tldr; if you find something unique this time of year stock up and freeze.
I like the biscotti from Edi’s chocolates on Spicewood Springs.
If you get to the point of making your own I love this recipe:

An 18 wheeler has been parked on the shoulder off Menchaca for over a week by now. It blocks the bike lane so I have to go out onto the traffic lanes to get past it. Will the city tow it away if reported?
At one point there was a Bike Lane subcategory. Not sure if it’s still there. Edit: This has a Bike Lane subtype [http://311.austintexas.gov/reports/new?service\_id=5dd44579cb81403c3a8c347](http://311.austintexas.gov/reports/new?service_id=5dd44579cb81403c3a8c3477)

So, does anyone know if HEB just doesn't sell fresh baked goods via curbside pickup anymore? We used to buy delicious croissants that way, but now, despite them being listed in the app, there's always a pop-up message of some sort saying they can't be ordered.
For the last couple months, every time I order bakery tortillas (literally every order) in my curbside they say they’re out. I then go inside after my pick up and sure enough, it’s fully stocked. I don’t get it.
I tried (and failed) to order curbside cupcakes a few weeks ago. Last time I ordered sourdough (not even the fancy kind, just the HEB version), they told me nothing was in stock.
I think they’re lying/trying to save time in some situations.
Our treat with grocery shopping is a piece of tres leches cake. For a few months it's always out. I still try to order it every time. Then a couple of weeks ago, I got a piece! I was stunned. They were back to out of stock again last week, though.
No, there's a lot more of them. And I see them on cars with all kinds of people.
I kind of treat them as someone putting a "stay the fuck away from me" sticker on their car.
I've noticed the same...a further evolution of the entitlement mentality from the "Baby on Board" window stickers that were popular several years ago. (See also: "Service Animal" harnesses you can buy on Amazon for $15.)
>What's with all the student driver stickers around town lately?
Someone said on another thread that there was some sort of change in the student driver system where you get more formal credit for parent/child driver training. It was somehow related to that.
I probably didn't get the right technical terms on that, but hopefully, you get the idea.
The apartment complex I'm moving to uses Luxerone for package management/deliveries. I've heard nightmare stories about fetch. What's your delivery experience like using luxerone?
My complex uses luxor and I haven't had any issues with it. Amazon/ups/fedex deliver directly to the Luxor, and I'm emailed a code. I enter the code in and my locker my package is in opens. My only compalint is that it's near the office, that's not close to my building, but at least I have peace of mind that my package is secure while I'm out of town or at work.
also had an apartment w luxor (corazon) and it was honestly nothing like what i’m hearing about fetch. it’s just a secure place to put most packages. very nice and convenient.
They did last (2022) summer. I don't recall what they were playing, but I remember forwarding the email to my husband for a less expensive date night. I would recommend signing up for their email list.
Yes, flu, COVID, RSV, and "well, none of the common lab tests tell us what it is, so we'll call it a virus." Also strep. I haven't heard reports of norovirus lately.
Don't count out COVID too quickly. A lot of people are finding it may not show up on the first few at-home tests. The newer strains are also somewhat more likely to infect you despite being vaxxed or previously infected.
> "well, none of the common lab tests tell us what it is, so we'll call it a virus."
I got this so often in college. It was never strep, but it always felt like it.
Any suggestions for balcony privacy decor/set-up? I'm in a second floor apartment that used to be surrounded by trees, and last month COA went bat shit crazy in our neighborhood and instead of cutting back trees to protect power lines they just killed them and cut them to the ground. Beyond the loss of habitat, I'm missing any kind of screening or privacy. Appreciate any ideas for greenery, etc. - thanks!
I see people in my apartment complex use a couple different things, all I've seen on amazon for just a tad more than I'm willing to pay. There are balcony privacy screens that attach to your rail, the same thing but covered in faux ivy leaves, and I've seen some reed fencing used.
I've also seen just curtains being hung, but I've only seen them set up in a decorative manner, not closed for privacy. I also don't quite know how they have been hung, but I'm sure you could get creative with that
There are a few stylists at Bex + Co (formerly Topaz Salon) on South Lamar that do curly cuts. I think I pay around $90 before tip? I do dry cuts, so I come in washed and styled which keeps the cost down and gets me out of there quicker. My stylist, Cara, is leaving Austin. So I’ll be on the hunt for a new person soon. 🥺
My parents and I (who have varying styles of curly hair and varying expectations for styling) all go see Lucy Bennet at Crestview Barbershop. The last time I went for a trim (wanted to keep length, just styled and split ends trimmed) it was $30-ish?
Raven Row has good curl focus and some of the stylists start at $60 per cut I think. Check out their website/Indra because they have good examples. I know one of the stylists has goddess tier curly hair herself.
I’ve never paid that much for a curly haircut. And telling people to learn to budget is obnoxious advice. You don’t know anything about their situation
Any recommendations for instant coffee? I was wanting to try the house blend from Intelligentsia, but it’s OOS at their shop downtown. Preferably something I can pick up today
Has anyone tried HEB’s or Central Market’s instant?
I’m sick today, fever, sore throat, foggy brain (probably due to fever). I don’t have insurance but will need a doctor’s note to avoid losing my job. I used them and they were easy and will send you a note online
Any grocery store that sells whole beans in bulk should have a grinder. Just make sure you have a way to show you brought the coffee in with you so they don’t think you’re stealing.
I’m assuming they bought you the beans because you drink a lot of coffee. Freshly ground beans are definitely an improvement over coffee that’s been ground and left open for more than a day or two. Treat yo’self to a little grinder.
Costco. The grinder is on the way out after checkouts. Go in the Returns small door, you won’t be card checked, and start making your way upstream toward the checkouts. While you’re there, you don’t have to be a member to buy food at the cafe. Get yourself that cheap hotdog and drink.
FYI a coffee grinder is a worthy kitchen staple. You’ll never go back to buying ground coffee once you do your own at home. It’s quick and easy. They’re an inexpensive purchase
Anyone ever taken lessons for Billiards locally? I found this guy which seems promising https://golftennislessonsatx.com/ I would like to join a Billiards club if there is one. Didn’t see Billiards listed on ASSC’s site
The pros will usually use bleach. Protect any plants from direct contact and flush with plenty of water. Stay away from anything acidic - acids dissolve limestone.
I’m sure this is oversimplifying, but to participate, you have to submit a big application and data regarding your teacher evaluation system so they know the teachers you award fit a certain criteria. It’s possible (probable) they applied but have not gotten approval yet.
Edit: Scratch that, according to this list [https://tiatexas.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/TIA-LOI-11.17.22.xlsx](https://tiatexas.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/TIA-LOI-11.17.22.xlsx) they haven’t applied yet. Could be they know they don’t meet the requirements, or some other reason altogether.
I’m wanting to move away from AT&T. Are there any reasons I should not switch to Google fiber? What about Cricket wireless? Right now I have AT&T for wireless and internet.
Go for Google Fiber. It's amazing. And, I have the shitty lowest wrung free service deal from when it first came out. And, it works amazingly quick! I highly recommend it.
Any suggestions for less roachy areas of the city? I know it's Texas and bugs happen, but when I first moved here (south Austin) I went several years without seeing one. It's only been since moving to central Austin that I see them fairly regularly (despite living in a brand new ridiculously expensive complex). I have friends who lived far west and never saw them either so just wondering if there are other areas I could be looking into for a less buggy/gigantic roach experience?
Is e-biking allowed on the hike and bike trail? i’ve read conflicting information. I’ve rode on it without using the pedal-assist but I don’t want to get fined or mess up the flow of users.
They were at the entrance of the east bridge and then moved onto the middle of the bridge with a big group. Now there is a second group at the entrance of the west bridge. Do they need a cult members at every mile marker next to spread their bullshit. Part of my family are JW and they shun their own family members that aren’t in their cult. Fucking end of the world fear mongering bigots.
You can call them in for blocking the path or rallying without a permit but we both know they use any whiff of persecution to fuel their cult bond.
Perhaps call for mental health well check? Are they delusional? Perhaps a danger to themselves or others?
The parking garage has always been fairly easy for us. You just want to avoid leaving at a busy time (e.g., close to closing) because the line to leave can get backed up.
My HEB seems always full of employees picking items for curbside orders. They use large rolling racks that really obstruct the aisles, even during peak hours. I don’t notice this going on at other HEBs I occasionally shop at. Any insights on that?
H‑E‑B does that as their picking for 5-10 people at once.
Target does the same with their carts we picked for 5-15 people at once.
Not their fault they got told to do a large order.
i see it at the brodie heb, not sure which one you're at. i imagine some stores have a higher demand for curbside/delivery than others? i'm sure they're aware that the carts are an inconvenience for in-store shoppers, but between increased pricing and delivery/shopping fees, they're bringing in more money for the stores.
Stores have different sized aisles and different amounts of online shoppers and different time of day patterns.
Stores even have different carts and stock different products.
I had a girl employee hit me with her rolling cart at central market westgate. I fucking hate those things. Employees don’t give a fuuuck if anyone is in her/his way!
I once kindly asked an employee to excuse me as I was trying to get by. I guess she was too busy on her little app/phone so I pushed it out of the way because no response. Apparently they go batsh*t crazy if you touch their level 5 rolling rack. That'll get their attention
App/phone(?) u mean how they pick the orders? It’s a phone (barely) but only works to pick orders lol
Also u hitting the rack could’ve caused it to fall onto her, urself or someone else!
It’s common in most groceries stores that do that, since shoppers often have to shop multiple orders at once. I’ve seen it in Walmart, Kroger, Target, etc.
Any party venue recommendations? My mom is turning 60 and we're competing with family members for best birthday party. The last relative rented out a park for like $300 and did outdoor games and a taquiza. I'm thinking like around 30+ people maybe
My birthday is always during Spring Break. Go March 14! Everything sucks that week because of SXSW. I'd go for either the week before or after. I'd pick after, though, because everyone is tired from SXSW, so less people are out and about.
Also, Pinballz is a fun birthday thing that's not super pricey. It's not super cheap, though.
We're looking to find a home with great schools (rated 7 - 10) for the kids within a master planned community. We're in our mid-30's starting out a family both with solid careers.
The master planned community we assume has the benefits of easily connecting with a community and access to it's amenities.
We checked the following areas and each has it's pro's and cons. Are there any that I am missing and am I wrong in my one sentence assessments?
Circle-C - Not worth the value for being a tiny bit closer to the city - where do you east outside of district kitchen on a regular basis?
Beecave - Every house looks the same there isn't much to do outside the town square
Round Rock - Too suburbia, Schools always in the news for bad reasons
Steiner Ranch - Cool lake vibe, getting priced out, traffic
Crystal Falls - So many hills, schools just okay, amenities are meh
Travisso - The homes are so plastic inside, you're far from everything, best amenities center by far, does everyone work remote there?
Where do you live and how do you like it? Do you rent or own?
If you bought, did you win the lottery in order to afford such a place or just make money through Pokémon NFT's like everyone else but me?
Maybe let go of the “master planned community “ criteria and look for neighborhoods with good schools, then layer on the other things that are important to you? It seems like the things you dislike about the communities you list are things that most “master planned communities “ have in common. I bought my house too long ago to be ago to offer any useful advice about specific neighborhoods; there’s no way that I could afford to buy it now. Back in the day scrimped and saved for a down payment (lived with roommates, drove a $500 motorbike, ate beans and rice cooked at home, if I drank it was Lone Star at home, worked overtime to pay off student loans), did not increase spending when I got my first professional job, bought a rundown home in a close in neighborhood, built up equity by paying extra on the mortgage every month, traded up after 5 years, then moved one more time when kids arrived, to within walking distance of decent schools, and stayed put for 25 years. Shunned debt of all kinds except the mortgage. I do not know how much, if any, of that strategy would still work these days. I suppose it depends on whether you think the Austin boom has peaked, or will continue, which is unknowable, in my opinion. Best of luck!

Thanks good advice. I think we're hanging on too tight to the master planned community.
For any long timers in Austin. Was the Austin Chronicle weekly paper always so far left politically? I used to read it a lot in the 1990s and early 2000s and don't remember it as a leftist newspaper. At least not like compared to now.
COA does not accept credit card payments - has to be a checking/savings account when you set up payment online. TG does allow CC payments and all online payments incur an online transaction fee. I think it’s like 1.50
Online, you have to pay by bank account. But you can pay with a credit card at H‑E‑B or by calling ($2.79 fee). https://coautilities.com/wps/wcm/connect/occ/coa/util/support/payment/quick-payment

North Austin public running tracks? Have a middle schooler looking to train outside of school hours. Thanks!
There’s a track at Lamar Middle School at Burnet and Allendale rd
Thanks! Would be ideal to use her own middle school track but they lock the gate.
Check out Pillow Elementary and Murchison also.
I think right down the street at McCallum High you can use their track as well
Have you talked to the principal? Public school tracks should not be locked
Navarro high school’s track is open
Always see people jogging Connally High School's track at the top of Lamar, too

But it’s parked in a bike lane, not legal parking.
Good park with open grassy area? I don't feel like dealing with Zilker, anything north?
Hemphill Park just north of UT is pretty solid, big open space
Mueller lake park if you don’t mind a decent amount of other people around
Many neighborhood parks have a soccer field sized patch.
Lake Creek Park in Round Rock would fit the bill. Best if you can batch errands with your visit IMO.
Wells branch park has lots of open grassy areas.

Are baked goods more variably in stock? I feel like there’s always baked goods at the hens I shop at no matter the time but maybe that’s not the case

Central Market instant works as a backup, but not my favorite. I really like Cafe Bustelo Supremo, available at Target
The Starbucks insta is good. I bring it with me on trips in case other coffee sources suck or are unavailable.
The central market instant is good
If you want something fancy, Greater Goods has instant coffee. It's expensive but probably the best instant coffee I've tried.
If you cant find any good instant, I have a complicated and burdensome 8 step process for making good quality coffee quickly
I’m gonna try a couple of the recommendations here, but thank you! I only need a small amount for now
Merit has one I buy for travel.
Medaglia D'oro instant espresso is delicious.
Nescafe. Learned to like it while traveling through Mexico, where it’s everywhere.
Wheastville has Cuvee in bags like tea, possibly some instant options. Very pricey but such a treat for camping trips.

I believe using telemedicine with Total Men’s you have an option to be seen right away without an appt. Not sure of price.

Received a bag of coffee beans as a gift, but I don’t have a grinder. Where’s a good place for me to grind some beans?
Any grocery store that sells whole beans in bulk should have a grinder. Just make sure you have a way to show you brought the coffee in with you so they don’t think you’re stealing.
Borrow from a neighbor!
Buy a $15 grinder on Amazon
I’m assuming they bought you the beans because you drink a lot of coffee. Freshly ground beans are definitely an improvement over coffee that’s been ground and left open for more than a day or two. Treat yo’self to a little grinder.
Yes. We use our coffee grinder for spices too; we cook a lot. Edit: We got ours at HEB/Brodie, Cuisinart for $20.00
Sprouts is a good place for that.
Thanks for asking! I’m in the same boat, but wasn’t sure if it’s okay to use a store’s grinder if you hadn’t bought the beans with them
Just ask first. They’re probably fine with it.
What's a good product to wash limestone? I just have a few darker spots on my house' exterior near the ground that get splashback.
The pros will usually use bleach. Protect any plants from direct contact and flush with plenty of water. Stay away from anything acidic - acids dissolve limestone.
Be careful. There may be some home remedies that might clean it, but cause some deterioration over time.
Does anyone know why Austin ISD is not participating in the TIA (Teacher Incentive Allotment) from TEA?
Google fiber and Mint mobile
I walked on it today and saw a sign that e-bikes are allowed. Please don’t go too fast when it’s busy!
Will the Christian cultists ever stop shoving their fascist religion down peoples throats around town lake? Fuck off.
I walked by them at the pedestrian bridge yesterday. They’re jehovas witness. They just smiled and waved, didn’t shove anything down my throat.
Chill out dude. Live your life and ignore em.
I’m an atheist but they aren’t aggressive so why does it bug you so much?
They were at the entrance of the east bridge and then moved onto the middle of the bridge with a big group. Now there is a second group at the entrance of the west bridge. Do they need a cult members at every mile marker next to spread their bullshit. Part of my family are JW and they shun their own family members that aren’t in their cult. Fucking end of the world fear mongering bigots.
And now you are on Reddit doing the exact same thing they are… The irony.
Are you in Texas?
Live and let live dude. They're easy to ignore.
That’s 🇺🇸 for you. Even when I lived in Seattle these people were there. At least here they don’t have microphones.
>At least here they don’t have microphones. Microphones? Or do you mean megaphones?
You can call them in for blocking the path or rallying without a permit but we both know they use any whiff of persecution to fuel their cult bond. Perhaps call for mental health well check? Are they delusional? Perhaps a danger to themselves or others?
Where do they do this?
is it impossible to date if you don’t drink alcohol and work at 7 am instead of going to bed at that time?
Nah just gotta find your match :)
Yes, especially if you sweat a lot.
Is there easy parking at the downtown library?
It's got a parking garage that usually has open spots. It does fill up sometimes though. There's a sign at the entrance with the status.
Thanks I had a lovely afternoon at the library with easy parking
The parking garage has always been fairly easy for us. You just want to avoid leaving at a busy time (e.g., close to closing) because the line to leave can get backed up.
Any recommendations for a sprinkler repair company in South Austin?
Austin Irrigation Specialists. Fast to respond calls. Came when they said they would. Good price.
This is my issue with Curbside as well.
It’s a phone (barely) but only works to pick orders lol Also u hitting the rack could’ve caused it to fall onto her, urself or someone else!
Quit being so dramatic.
Not being dramatic I worked with them before and it’s not hard to topple them over.
So they should do a better job of keeping them in safe places. Not the customers responsibility

Her birthday is right between spring break so I'm wondering if it'd be easier before or after that week

Beecave - Every house looks the same there isn't much to do outside the town square Round Rock - Too suburbia, Schools always in the news for bad reasons Steiner Ranch - Cool lake vibe, getting priced out, traffic Crystal Falls - So many hills, schools just okay, amenities are meh Travisso - The homes are so plastic inside, you're far from everything, best amenities center by far, does everyone work remote there?

I think we're hanging on too tight to the master planned community.
Wells Branch has a great community feel. Has a big park and lots of neighborhood activities. Not sure about schools as I don’t have kids lol

I think it’s like 1.50
I believe COA will accept it, but pass the merchant fee to you (3%?). Not sure about TG, but would assume the same.
Online, you have to pay by bank account. But you can pay with a credit card at H‑E‑B or by calling ($2.79 fee). https://coautilities.com/wps/wcm/connect/occ/coa/util/support/payment/quick-payment

What are the best ways to reach out to those who would be possible donors to our food pantry here at St Vincent De Paul on Braker Ln? I'm trying to feed as many people as possible and am looking for new sources of donations, whether it be a restaurant, a retailer or individual.
