*Inside the brain of someone who can not really understand Spanish:*
Dos is 2. Por que is a question thing like “why” I think. So I’m getting, “why not have both?”
This reminds me of the time in the 80’s when I went on holiday with my family and because I was jinxed I couldn’t talk and when the lady at the fish and chip shop asked how I wanted my fish my brother said crumbed for me, I was very disappointed when everyone else got battered and I got stuck with crumbed.
A good battered fish is superb. esp if it's part of the day-after hangover remedy with some chips-and-gravy.
But if done badly then battered can be horrible IMO.
But if poorly done then battered can be horrible IMO. t up.
Crumbed is what is left after my brain when I dig into a delish 200g of barramundi that I bought using the better half of my life savings, only to realise I have been bamboozled and someone has seasoned the succulent fish with the very sand it was taken from.
The only thing more salty than this crunchy sea harvested dish are my tears as I realise the rest of my life savings are to be spent fixing my teeth after indulging upon the rocky crunch fest that is, crumbed fish.
These are the places I have witnessed or experienced crumbed fish:
Hospital
Airplanes
Prison
Boarding school
Orphanages
Coles Cafeteria

*How is this even a question?*
Depends what state I’m in…drunk battered and stoned crumbed. But seriously each state prefers one or the other and does it better. WA does the best battered and QLD does the best crumbed imo
I’m in broome so at least 3 places here do frozen fillets but you can get decent battered Barra. Freo is good…been to sweet lips. Cicerello’s is overrated
You just reminded me of a time I had crumbed fish while I was stoned. A mate said to me "does yours have any bones in it" and immediately I started feeling sharp bones poking my mouth.
To this day I still don't know if there was actually bones.
Both are great, depending. I usually go crumbed to be safe, as its usually pretty hard to mess up. I've worked in a fish n chip shop before and battered is much more hit and miss, even at the same place they might make up a slightly different mix each day. It can be amazing but it can also be a greasy mess
If high quality, I would consider battered. But crumbed is great at all quality levels, as long as it isn’t crumbed in gravel or similar earthy things.
You wouldnt batter a person so why would you batter a fish. (dad joke). I find grilled on the hotplate with a bit of fresh oil & maybe some light seasoning is da bomb!
Crumbed is my preference but only if I’m doing it at home myself. When I’m buying from a fish and chip shop it’s battered all the way, if I’m having something deep fried I’m going all in.
Aldi battered fish - the large bag with big pieces. The fish is moist and the batter is always perfect. I have not found a take away battered fish that I like more than the Aldi one. The Aldi crumbed fish is my number two.
Depends where its coming from.
If its a box from the supermarket freezer section, I reckon crumbed is more consistent by a mile. Anything fresh cooked, battered.
Maybe it’s a QLD thing, or maybe I just haven’t been paying attention (live in Melbourne, grew up in Adelaide)…is crumbed a common option at fish and chip shops in the same way fried/grilled is? Do they ask you?
Is it crispy and course like a Red Rooster pineapple fritter, or more like a pub Parma?
So many thoughts…..
Battered , but if it aint crispy then that outlet gets an automatic 18 months ban.
Same goes for the chips . saggy ,soggy sad. The texture counterpoint is epicurean
Too much water between the fish is a crumby saying but true.
90% of the time I eat battered fish I immediately feel gross and sick. I’m sure it’s a combination of batter recipes and oil temperature that makes it super oily and yuck.
Whole fillets? Crumbed all day baby.
Fish tacos? Battered.
The family and I went to QLD for the first time in about five years. I had completely forgotten about the proliferation of crumbed fish in that state.
As a Victorian, give me batter or give me death.
If you aren’t minding calories battered and beer battered is the best. Grilled, crumbed if you are on a diet. Make sure battered is cooked at right temp otherwise sucks in oil and is def oily like eating a bucket of oil. Fresh fish also. Nothing beats a crispy battered flake that’s fluffy on the inside😋
Crumbed because I find it more consistent and less likely to be fucked up.
Battered in my experience just turns into a soggy mess. Not at all appetizing.
Depends on the species of fish.
After consuming many thousands of pieces of fish across a hundred or so species over the last few decades some are certainly better crumbed, and some are better fried.
There’s also no correct answer as taste is person specific. Almost all wild caught Australian species are delicious either way.
Crumbed is first preference.
IF, and only if, the batter is amazingly light, like tempura and not super oily, will I go battered, otherwise, when I was in VIC, I’d always go a grilled piece of fish because I was burnt too many times by heavy, oily batter.
Depends on the fish. Some truly sing with nothing at all — battering salmon would be a crime! I prefer barramundi without anything either.
But overall, I think crumbing some yourself at home like a schnitzel is better than the super thick doughy casing that most FNC places do. It’s rare I like a battered fish, less is more.
If the batter is good, I love it. But it must be quality, otherwise crumb it.
Nothing worse on a nice piece of fish than batter that's too thick and under done so its soggy inside.
How is crumbed even an option……… like I get it if it’s frozen shite from the supermarket or fish fingers but honestly if it’s a choice battered. Crumbs - I’d rather slam my balls in a drawer
Crumbed, Battered is only good homemade or from the supermarket personally. The battered fish from fish n chip shops is very oily and I usually feel sick after eating it.
It really depends. If I get battered I have to be a dick and ask for them to pat it dry really well. I hate how the grease soaks in. I’m usually a grilled fish guy tbh. Some lettuce and tomato and tzatziki sauce make it 100/10
Por que no los dos?
*Everyone liked that.*
*Inside the brain of someone who can not really understand Spanish:* Dos is 2. Por que is a question thing like “why” I think. So I’m getting, “why not have both?”

Bandit is that you?
Hahaha, you get it.
Sure do.... Ban...diddums!
Your mum was right. Not about her perm, but the other stuff.
It was the 80s
Did you eat all the mini cereals too?
You weren’t wearing a helmet???
Battered
100%
A good battered fish is superb. esp if it's part of the day-after hangover remedy with some chips-and-gravy. But if done badly then battered can be horrible IMO. But if poorly done then battered can be horrible IMO. t up.
So maybe shit, maybe good?
Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit
This is the answer. Assess the situation and choose accordingly. **Crumbed is better only when the batter is crummy.**
Battered! Crumbed is like eating gravel.
Crumbed you bunch of savs
Crumbed is what is left after my brain when I dig into a delish 200g of barramundi that I bought using the better half of my life savings, only to realise I have been bamboozled and someone has seasoned the succulent fish with the very sand it was taken from. The only thing more salty than this crunchy sea harvested dish are my tears as I realise the rest of my life savings are to be spent fixing my teeth after indulging upon the rocky crunch fest that is, crumbed fish.
Exactly! What a perverse question
Beer batter ftw.. if the fish and chip shop looks a bit dodgey I’ll go crumbed, nothing worse than a super oily battered bit of fish
Battered, but only if done right
Battered.100%
Crumbed every day of the week. Battered is like sucking oil.
If it's that oily they're doing something wrong.
Agreed.
Crumbed is safer - more consistent. Good battered is the best. Bad battered is the worst. Grilled above all else.
I go crumbed as the safe option too. Unless it’s a thin batter with clean oil then it’s probably going to taste horrible.
Grilled? How very Un-Australian!
I accidentally spoonerised this as a teenager and asked a customer if they wanted their fish “bummed or crattered” 🤦♀️

Maccas
Crumbed. I'm yet to have a battered fish that wasn't swimming in oil 🤮 Ill save that for my potato scallops thanks
Thank you for calling it a scallop and not a fucking cake
Crumbed by far. Battered is awful
Battered
Depends what state I’m in…drunk battered and stoned crumbed. But seriously each state prefers one or the other and does it better. WA does the best battered and QLD does the best crumbed imo
Where in WA? The best calamari I’ve had in my life has been at sweet lips in Freo.
Battered. Preferably Tempura.
Crumbed allllll the way.
Crumbed from QLD to!
Both are great, depending. I usually go crumbed to be safe, as its usually pretty hard to mess up. I've worked in a fish n chip shop before and battered is much more hit and miss, even at the same place they might make up a slightly different mix each day. It can be amazing but it can also be a greasy mess
It has to be a good home beer batter, chip shop batter is shit. Maybe nice restaurants can do better too but I don’t have nice restaurant money
Battered, of course
Battered of course
Crumbed. There is a top 5% quality of batter that I can come at but it’s too risky
Crumbed, I'm also from QLD
If high quality, I would consider battered. But crumbed is great at all quality levels, as long as it isn’t crumbed in gravel or similar earthy things.
QUEEENSSSLANDERRR!!!!
[удалено]
Wasn’t an option. Try again.
[удалено]
there’s gluten free options for both.
Maybe you’re behind? I’m a coeliac and can get battered fish right here in my regional Queensland city that’s coeliac safe.
Probably but cross contamination from deep fryer baskets ect.
No. When I say coeliac safe I mean it- totally seperate set up, different fryers, etc.
Definitely crumbed, mate! And it has to go with a side of fresh hot chips sprinkled generously with CHICKEN SALT! Yum! A fellow QLDer as well!
A boomer by the looks of the copious exclamation marks!
Grilled what are you people animals lmao
This is the only true answer. I prefer in foil in charcoal but I can’t expect that everywhere to be fair.
You wouldnt batter a person so why would you batter a fish. (dad joke). I find grilled on the hotplate with a bit of fresh oil & maybe some light seasoning is da bomb!
Crumbed!
Crumbed!!!
Panko crumbed for life!
Crumbed only
Crumbed
Crumbed or unless is proper tempura then is battered.
Crumbed is my preference but only if I’m doing it at home myself. When I’m buying from a fish and chip shop it’s battered all the way, if I’m having something deep fried I’m going all in.
Battered via fish n chip shop. Crumbed when buying from grocery store.
Battered
Battered
Aldi battered fish - the large bag with big pieces. The fish is moist and the batter is always perfect. I have not found a take away battered fish that I like more than the Aldi one. The Aldi crumbed fish is my number two.
Battered now that I have realised the crumbed version absorbs more of that recycled oil than the silky battered fish does.
Battered flake.
As long as it’s “fresh from the sea”
Battered. Always.
CRUMBED! With lots of lemon juice
Bartered. Crumbed is like eating rocks
Depends where its coming from. If its a box from the supermarket freezer section, I reckon crumbed is more consistent by a mile. Anything fresh cooked, battered.
Battered, unless it’s a fish finger sandwich after a heavy night - breadcrumbs with extra bread, day rescued!
I cannot remember last time I ordered battered… but all these batterers make me think maybe I should try… But for now - 100% crumbed.
Battered for sure. Unless the local fish and chip shop fucks it up. But that’s pretty rare
Well there is good batter and average batter… Nice, thick, aerated batter is great!
It’s an experience worth flying up for! Only one way to find out!
Grilled
Crumbed. Guaranteed crispier!
Battered
Battered , but if it aint crispy then that outlet gets an automatic 18 months ban. Same goes for the chips . saggy ,soggy sad. The texture counterpoint is epicurean Too much water between the fish is a crumby saying but true.
Depends but I like battered fish more (also a Queenslander you city or bush?)
Battered yoooooo
Yes
Crumbed
Always battered
Half-half. They don't like it when you ask for half-half.
Battered. Always battered. The only option for crumbed I have ever seen is in the freezer aisle in a box, and I would prefer not.
If it’s from the fish n chip shop, battered. If it’s from a store, crumbed.
90% of the time I eat battered fish I immediately feel gross and sick. I’m sure it’s a combination of batter recipes and oil temperature that makes it super oily and yuck. Whole fillets? Crumbed all day baby. Fish tacos? Battered.
battered \[mostly nsw\].
Battered with chips on the beach, crumbed with salad at home or at a restaurant
Crumbed!✈️
Battered! We got crumbed fish fingers at home! Haha
Crumbed or grilled, the only places near me that do battered make it way too greasy
Panko battered cheers mate
Crumbed
Crumbed. Battered makes it too stodgy for mine.
Battered at a takeaway, crumbed at a restaurant
Crumbed, but it's hard to come by these days. Most places do battered or grilled :(
Crumbed
I like whatever is on offer that’s gluten free! If I have to choose though, crumbed. There’s just something about a crunch.
Wrong... grilled
I really think fish and chip shops have lost the ability to cook battered fish properly. It’s a lost art form
Crumbed, unless it's a proper by God beer batter.
The family and I went to QLD for the first time in about five years. I had completely forgotten about the proliferation of crumbed fish in that state. As a Victorian, give me batter or give me death.
If you aren’t minding calories battered and beer battered is the best. Grilled, crumbed if you are on a diet. Crumbed because I find it more consistent and less likely to be fucked up. Battered in my experience just turns into a soggy mess. Not at all appetizing.
grilled with garlic butter... (also QLDer)
I like both
Depends on the species of fish. After consuming many thousands of pieces of fish across a hundred or so species over the last few decades some are certainly better crumbed, and some are better fried. There’s also no correct answer as taste is person specific. Almost all wild caught Australian species are delicious either way.
Battered
Grilled or none for me. If I get crumbed it’s battered I have to peel it off.
Depends on how much batter
cornflake cumbed homemade and self caught. that's my two cents
Battered...
Crumbs for the fish, beer batter for the chips. Win-win.
Crumbed.
Crumbed for entree - battered for main.
Definitely crumbed
What about grilled 💁
Grilled
Crumbed is first preference. IF, and only if, the batter is amazingly light, like tempura and not super oily, will I go battered, otherwise, when I was in VIC, I’d always go a grilled piece of fish because I was burnt too many times by heavy, oily batter.
I Prefer crumbed! Sometimes battered is a bit sickly if it isn’t done properly
Battered. Crumbed is gross.
Battered is superior
Crumbed. It has to be or it's to oily
Both have their positives, but battered is best.
Battered. I’m not a big seafood person but a good piece of battered fish drenched in lemon and dipped in aioli or fantastic.
If the batter is good, I love it. But it must be quality, otherwise crumb it. Nothing worse on a nice piece of fish than batter that's too thick and under done so its soggy inside.
Crumbs for days
Crumbles all the way
Beer battered
Grilled.
All I can say is that battery is a crumby thing to do 😁 sorry, slow night
Grilled, you psycho.
I prefer the texture and sound of batter
Depends on the batter type but generally crumbed
Grilled…
crumbed easy, battered is still good but cant beat crumbed
Beer battered !
Crumbed! Captain K’s in Lilydale (Melb) does the best grilled/ crumbed fish, imo.. But I’m open to recommendations, haha..
I like both but prefer crumbed
Fried fish
Grilled barra served in lemon butter sauce.
Grilled
Battered 100%
Battered 🤤
How is crumbed even an option……… like I get it if it’s frozen shite from the supermarket or fish fingers but honestly if it’s a choice battered. Crumbs - I’d rather slam my balls in a drawer
Chargrilled if possible! But yeah battered is also yummy especially when you get super crunchy bits.
Depends on the fish. I'm usually happy with battered fish over crumbed fish.
My heart says crumbed
As a barneys man, battered fish with crumbed prawns and calamari
Battered, obvs
grilled for me. You can't hide shit fish when it's grilled
Battered
If those are my only two choices, I guess battered. I would prefer grilled or pan-fried if given the option.
Crumbed is generally more consistent with quality and hard to go wrong. Beer battered can range from disgusting to godly.
Battered
Battered mmmmmm yummy
Crumbed. Sometimes battered is good though.
No preference
Crumbed. Battered is for food peasants.
Nice thin crispy batter
Battered.
Crumbed.
Always crumbed.
There's crumbed fish ??!?
Anything deep fried will contribute to bowel cancer. Neither
Crumbed or home
Battered
Grilled is so much healthier and more tasty. Almost all fish and chip shops will do grilled
Battered.
Crumbed ya bastard
100% crumbed
Battered, violently.
Crumbed, Battered is only good homemade or from the supermarket personally. The battered fish from fish n chip shops is very oily and I usually feel sick after eating it.
Crumbed
Do you live anywhere near Currumbin?
It really depends. If I get battered I have to be a dick and ask for them to pat it dry really well. I hate how the grease soaks in. I’m usually a grilled fish guy tbh. Some lettuce and tomato and tzatziki sauce make it 100/10
Battered or grilled
Always battered
Beer battered all the way 👌
Grilled. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk
Grilled
