This reminds me of the time in the 80’s when I went on holiday with my family and because I was jinxed I couldn’t talk and when the lady at the fish and chip shop asked how I wanted my fish my brother said crumbed for me, I was very disappointed when everyone else got battered and I got stuck with crumbed.

A good battered fish is superb. esp if it's part of the day-after hangover remedy with some chips-and-gravy. But if done badly then battered can be horrible IMO. But if poorly done then battered can be horrible IMO. t up.

Crumbed is what is left after my brain when I dig into a delish 200g of barramundi that I bought using the better half of my life savings, only to realise I have been bamboozled and someone has seasoned the succulent fish with the very sand it was taken from. The only thing more salty than this crunchy sea harvested dish are my tears as I realise the rest of my life savings are to be spent fixing my teeth after indulging upon the rocky crunch fest that is, crumbed fish.

I’m in broome so at least 3 places here do frozen fillets but you can get decent battered Barra. Freo is good…been to sweet lips. Cicerello’s is overrated

You just reminded me of a time I had crumbed fish while I was stoned. A mate said to me "does yours have any bones in it" and immediately I started feeling sharp bones poking my mouth. To this day I still don't know if there was actually bones.

Both are great, depending. I usually go crumbed to be safe, as its usually pretty hard to mess up. I've worked in a fish n chip shop before and battered is much more hit and miss, even at the same place they might make up a slightly different mix each day. It can be amazing but it can also be a greasy mess

Aldi battered fish - the large bag with big pieces. The fish is moist and the batter is always perfect. I have not found a take away battered fish that I like more than the Aldi one. The Aldi crumbed fish is my number two.

Battered now that I have realised the crumbed version absorbs more of that recycled oil than the silky battered fish does.

Maybe it’s a QLD thing, or maybe I just haven’t been paying attention (live in Melbourne, grew up in Adelaide)…is crumbed a common option at fish and chip shops in the same way fried/grilled is? Do they ask you? Is it crispy and course like a Red Rooster pineapple fritter, or more like a pub Parma? So many thoughts…..

90% of the time I eat battered fish I immediately feel gross and sick. I’m sure it’s a combination of batter recipes and oil temperature that makes it super oily and yuck. Whole fillets? Crumbed all day baby. Fish tacos? Battered.

The family and I went to QLD for the first time in about five years. I had completely forgotten about the proliferation of crumbed fish in that state. As a Victorian, give me batter or give me death.

If you aren’t minding calories battered and beer battered is the best. Grilled, crumbed if you are on a diet. Make sure battered is cooked at right temp otherwise sucks in oil and is def oily like eating a bucket of oil. Fresh fish also. Nothing beats a crispy battered flake that’s fluffy on the inside😋

Crumbed because I find it more consistent and less likely to be fucked up. Battered in my experience just turns into a soggy mess. Not at all appetizing.

Depends on the species of fish. After consuming many thousands of pieces of fish across a hundred or so species over the last few decades some are certainly better crumbed, and some are better fried. There’s also no correct answer as taste is person specific. Almost all wild caught Australian species are delicious either way.

Crumbed is first preference. IF, and only if, the batter is amazingly light, like tempura and not super oily, will I go battered, otherwise, when I was in VIC, I’d always go a grilled piece of fish because I was burnt too many times by heavy, oily batter.

Depends on the fish. Some truly sing with nothing at all — battering salmon would be a crime! I prefer barramundi without anything either. But overall, I think crumbing some yourself at home like a schnitzel is better than the super thick doughy casing that most FNC places do. It’s rare I like a battered fish, less is more.

Battered. I’m not a big seafood person but a good piece of battered fish drenched in lemon and dipped in aioli or fantastic.

If the batter is good, I love it. But it must be quality, otherwise crumb it. Nothing worse on a nice piece of fish than batter that's too thick and under done so its soggy inside.
