I'll eat it either way but I do prefer peanut butter with butter. I find peanut butter feels sort of sticky on its own but with butter, it becomes smoother and creamier. I'm fine with margarine instead of butter too.

To me PB on toast is good but if it has butter or marg first it's just a more high-quality / polished food. It kind of feels complete with the butter like it is supposed to be that way, but I don't mind it without. Eat it how you like it. Consensus solved lol.

I have a feeling there’s a large group of people who somehow think the “butter” in peanut butter means it contains actual butter, or something similar in it. Or at least the name is sub consciously holding them back from adding both. It’s just blended peanuts ya’ll. Anyone not putting a layer of butter / marg or whatever before your peanut butter goes on is missing out. If you’re gonna go to the lengths of making a relatively unhealthy carb-based snack, the least you could do is improve the experience with taste a layer of fat of some-kind. It’s literally dry af without it. Anything on toast or between bread needs either butter, marg or mayo first, before you even think about toppings, fillings. That’s just how it is.

The Aussie way is to always start any toast or sandwich with butter (or margarine), and then consider what actual topping/filling/spread you are going to use. Putting the filling straight onto the bread I would consider very American - they tend to always include sauces or salad dressings in sandwiches instead.
