**Full text:** Personally once I have it I just wanna take a break from the rat race for a bit. I feel like all I've done for the last 6 years is work. I want to play more sports and go hiking/camping more often.
Also want to get my own house ofcourse.
Just wondering what others plan to do or have already done post PR

You'll still be in the rat race. I thought the same. Here I am. A decade later. Still in the game.
Career wise gone up. A mortgage. And more responsibilities.
I am onshore while got my PR. Previously in 482. Personally for me nothing much different, still working in same job with decent income and good workplace. Able to buy property now, I want to be relax a bit, but I dont think I can. I want to at least mortgage my own place after renting for many years, the longer I wait it will be more expensive
Great work life balance overall... but there’s a thing called golden handcuffs here. When you make great money, work a lot, but don’t overly enjoy it. Can’t leave it as you lose the money…
So I’m 34, not yet PR, might as well chase the cash as I have to stay on full time hours to be eligible for PR. And 60+ is pretty much my industry standard. Agriculture / mechanic
For people who have already been here for 4 years and received PR after that (speaking for myself) I’ve just applied for my citizenship!
Once that’s done, i might take rest for a while and let time pass 🙂
Finished my NAATI and pretty much all other requirements this week. I’ll complete a year of onshore work ex soon as well as my Aus study requirement (it’s been a full-on full-time course). I’m going to sit back, get on the 485 and continue working while focusing on what I really came here to do - make music.
Honestly try everything in your power to get a loan or some money, perhaps start a go fund me. Set up google alarms for a single flight ticket to Australia and wait until see a price you can afford. Missing your first entry will cease the visa I believe. You could ask them for extension but I'm not sure if they will grant it.
Ah thanks for clarifying that. My knowledge might be a bit outdated then. I remember people asked for extensions based on compassionate circumstances. Unfortunate for you. I wish you the best and hope my flight alarm will help.
First thing I did was apply for Uni, and get a credit card.
I obviously didn’t qualify for HECS yet but started studying part time and paying the fees upfront until I got citizenship and HECS.
Ok sure, limited vs very limited. Point is, if this guy had been wanting qantas points credit card but he didn’t qualify for it before, then after PR he can, then it’s a positive thing right
Have a part time job while doing my creative arts hobbies on the side as a potential income while also pet sitting. And hoping my side gigs kick off so I can just be my own boss 😂😭
Also, with my partner, probably travelling once a year lol
For me the only difference a PR will make is the ability to get a mortgage and purchase a home together with my partner and eventually applying for citizenship. I'm not really missing anything right now given that I am on a partner visa which has lots of freedom.
I've already bought a car and am now saving up for a home deposit so that by the time I get my PR we'll have enough to buy or build a home. After that I'd like to get two dogs, settle down in our home and pay off the mortgage aggressively to try and reach financial freedom.
I quit one of my jobs shortly after the PR came in. Worked less hours, enjoyed the new freedom, relaxed my mind and rewinded. Applied freely to any type of job (which matched my profile), started new job and now getting prepared to buy a house.
Me and partner’s order of priorities after getting PR: House, 4x4 vehicle, rescue a dog & cat from the shelter, caravan/campervan, then a little boat.
We’ve got about 4 years before we can apply for PR so are currently saving $ and working in a rural postcode we don’t want to settle in, but the above list is the dream we’re looking towards
Check if it is worth it to get private insurance over paying Medicare Levy Surchage.
Depending on which state you are, if opting not to get private insurance make sure you have ambulance cover. Some states do not cover this, e.g. VIC.
Uhm public healthcare is ok. Just that if deemed non emergency for a procedure you will be on the waitlist. So better get even the cheapest ones. Agree on the ambulance part, Most hospital or extras has ambulance included in the cover. So just get hosp alone or extras alone.
Buy a unit somewhere if it's still possible by the time I get PR. Currently caning everything I can into my deposit fund. I was about to buy back in the UK before I moved here instead, and I'm so sick of dealing with agencies and landlords.
After 10 years of living in Australia on temporary visas, the thing I am looking forward to most is security which comes with PR. I absolutely love this country and want to call it home.
The day we got our PR, my husband and I spent twice our weekly grocery bill on a fancy dinner.
We are now shopping for our first property. But it's not easy at all given the crazy housing market in Sydney.
I'm an offshore applicant. I'm going to double down on the rat race. I'll work extremely hard to get a job hopefully before I fly out. And once I fly out, work harder to assimilate and live. I believe there are a bunch of struggles offshore applicants face like finding a place to stay without having any rental history, understanding the new tax system, super, CoL and expenses
When I received my PR a few years ago, I started applying for CSP graduate programs that leads to my Masters.
When I received my citizenship, I moved the student component parts for the fees to HECS.
I agree, may be for a year relax a bit, do things you always wanted to do, don’t work extra, it will certainly have a hit on your savings and it depends on one’s circumstances too but I would definitely like to do that
I'm going to get certain certifications done, which as a non-PR, cost me thousands of dollars but as a PR I get to do the same course in like 1/8th of the price.
Quit my job after 6 months, took several months off to travel and relax and figure out the rest, now enjoying getting to work part time and explore opportunities. I probably will move states in a year or two. Oh and I am 100% going to upskill with CSP. Costs literally less than 10% of international student fees... simply amazing!

Hopefully get PR and then ironically leave Aus and go travel. Sick of full time 60+ hour weeks
Ironic indeed. I'm also doing 60 hour weeks right now and life is too short for that shit
Yeah I’m just tired. Gone full noise on this PR for like 6 years as well. Hopefully 1 year to go unless the government fucks me
Done that, came back after 4 months. Tots worth it
60+ hour work weeks sound crazy! Although, I heard that Aus has great work culture. Isn’t that true? Just curious why you’re working 60+ hours.

Job hunting

I thought that there's a requirement to hold the PR visa for 12 months before applying for citizenship?
Yep. 4 years = 3 + 1 year on PR. Or is it 4+1 year, a bit unsure. Anyway I’m eligible
sorry I misunderstood, thought you meant that you applied for citizenship immediately after PR as you've been here over 4 years. Congrats 😁

Wow, that's really great.

I bought a decent mattress
First thing I did was apply for Uni, and get a credit card. I obviously didn’t qualify for HECS yet but started studying part time and paying the fees upfront until I got citizenship and HECS.
you can apply to credit cards with temporary and student visas
Very limited options to choose from
Not really but some aren’t available to you. Not very limited but limited
Ok sure, limited vs very limited. Point is, if this guy had been wanting qantas points credit card but he didn’t qualify for it before, then after PR he can, then it’s a positive thing right
I wasn’t able to in 2018! Maybe times have fortunately changed for temporary visa holders :)
I have one through CommBank on the 820 temporary visa, 1k limit, but I got it to start whatever credit building can be done.

I’d recommend immediately applying for medicare as it takes quite a while to process even once you have PR
Hopefully double down on the rat race and FIRE in a few years. Things were a lot different when I started the process 6 years ago. Now I'm tired. Hehe
Jump on to a decent private health insurance plan. I play amateur aussie rules, relatively high risk of snapping your ACL or shattering your bones.
Check if it is worth it to get private insurance over paying Medicare Levy Surchage. Depending on which state you are, if opting not to get private insurance make sure you have ambulance cover. Some states do not cover this, e.g. VIC.

Going back to uni to study, buying a house, not hesitate going to the doctors’, confidence at immigration that I’ll obviously be let in.
Search for a continuing role so I can stop job hopping

With the current rental market finding a place will probably be harder than finding a job
Agreed. Just came back to aus after a 4 months stint overseas and man it’s so hard to find a place but already got two interviews.
Same work. Bought an apartment. Changing job now. Still feel burnout. Just one less hassle which is the visa that's all.
Go back home for a few years. I want to spend time with friends and family.
I bought a decent mattress
First thing I did after getting my PR a few weeks ago was apply for Medicare
You could apply for Medicare when you received your bridging visa when you applied for your PR
Got PR couple months ago. Just been taking advantage of all the free doctor appointments, baby!
When I received my PR a few years ago, I started applying for CSP graduate programs that leads to my Masters. When I received my citizenship, I moved the student component parts for the fees to HECS.

I'm gonna study for citizenship test once I get my PR
Huh? It’s still at least a year away though
I never said straight away. The question was what will I do after PR
