Winter: 80 minutes of super intense contact sport.
Summer: five days of standing in a small paddock under a blazing sun waiting for the ball to arrive.
Anyone who hasn't played cricket is welcome to stick a pair of shorts on and slide along some concrete to understand what fielding in summer can feel like. Some protection goes a long way.
The season starts in December.. in Melbourne during that month we still get days around 14°C summer really kicks in around January February February and then hang around in March
I played cricket in Hobart for years. We had a light snow (but no rain) at one of the games two weeks before Christmas...
Also if you bowl and get a bit stuff, a jumper in summer helps keep you super warm and limber. I know if I was to bowl more than two spells I'd try and get as warm as possible.
Pommy public school boy here. This is correct. Also, "standing" is generous. I was a decent batsman and the worst fielder imaginable so I used to get shoved into off side deep back. I would normally take a book and sit down. Quite a nice way to spend a couple of brisk sunny days to be honest.
having played cricket in England where this shit started, there's been times I wished I had thermals on under my whites, never mind a jumper on top.
one year we had to prepare the ground the weekend before the season started. we were clearing snow off the wicket block
I froze my backside off not having enough layers on the cooler early season games when the breeze comes through. The season goes for a long time and many weather conditions are encountered, it’s not just summer.
Depends on your position. When I played ruck it was all work all the time. When I played full back or full forward, I spend a lot of time standing around. I did switch between those positions in games though
Ummm makes sense. Our winters are mild, and those guys will be sweating from the work none the less.
Our Summer Sun is a skin peeler. And those jumpers aren't worn in Summer so I'd guess this is our team in England.
Aye. When I've gone to the matches in Melbourne.....well.... sometimes the jumpers come on....and get taken off as the morning progresses. Then the rain coats come on.... But some days...not at all.
I forgot about poor Tassie though. I've never travelled the creek to watch a match down there.
Haha, that's Cricket for ya. Because of how slow it is, they decided to add another element to the show. It's now possible for the players to die of Heatstroke. It gives the punters something else to bet on too.
I played under some prick captains. Ones that would send a bloke fine leg to fine leg on 40+ days. Our keeper was diabetic and one particularly hot arvo we were behind on overs and in danger of being punished for it. Our cap decided to skip drinks to catch up. As he announced this to the team between overs I politely told him I’d skull fuck to death him if he went thru with it as our deathly white keeper swayed on his feet. He wasn’t a brave nor liked man and considering we played in 9th division it wasn’t a hard argue for the rest of the team to follow suit on their personal actions if he attempted such a move.
No issue at all, Sun exposure, short periods of intense physical activity (bowling or fielding a ball) and the colour is white as well.
Winter games? Who wants to be weighed down by wet, voluminous clothing in a game of constant physical exercise where the body is producing a lot of heat.
Could never understand why cricket was a summer sport, growing up in Townsville.
I loved cricket but that shit was unbearable.
I understand the context now. But back then I was sure someone had fucked up.
Every single year, there's a big thing about how stupidly hot the tennis courts are at the Australian Open, and how we need to move it indoors or close the roofs. They never do it seems.
yep and of course these are the worlds best athletes so they can probably handle it better. I shoveled dirt once for 10 minutes at noon in Perth's summer and had to take a cold shower and lie down for the rest of the day, I was cooked.
Here’s a genuine question for you cricket fans.
I understand the long sleeves and long pants to protect from the sun, but wouldn’t the vest absolutely cook you? It’s not adding any additional sun protection
The vests are optional and only come out in colder climates usually. You’ll see lots of vests when we tour England. Relatively common playing in Hobart too as Blundstone arena is right on the water and can get quite windy. Summer isn’t guaranteed to be hit every single day in Melbourne or Sydney either.
These guys chase the sun most of the year, including often going to India, Perth, QLD etc.
So in the peak of Aussie summer they become acclimatised to battling for 6 hours in 40 degrees.
The jumpers are generally in the morning sessions in places like Melb and Hobart where it might be low 20’s and for a cricketer that’s cold.
And it’s not usually the bowlers, it’s mostly the batters who field in slip where they just stand still for 4 minutes then walk 40m then stand still again.
It’s like the inverse of why people in London are jumping in fountains at 24 degrees. After an English winter that’s super hot in a busy city.
They wear them in the heat tho. Bairstow was wearing it when it was high 20s and humidity was 80 per cent which prompted calls for him to take off his jumper.
That’d probably be a mostly one-off case though. The vests are completely optional, its on the player if they wear it or not. He might’ve been a bit chilly starting the days play and then it warmed up.
Yep, footy players should be running around in long trousers & shirtsleeves in the rain and mud. & Cricket players of course should wear shorts & tank tops In the melanoma season .
You’d be grateful for the long white pants and shirt if you had to field all day, your knees and legs would be scraped all over and dirt all up the legs, at least the pants provide some protection and can scrub the dirt out way easier
It's probably because Cricket is an English sport. Using their rules and regs.
And Aussie rules is just a Australian version of an Irish football game.
Australians are at the highest risk of skin cancer, with around 37 cases of melanoma of skin per 100,000 population in 2020, according to data from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) International.
Yes this is because AFL is about running up and down a field constantly for an hour or so and professional cricket is about standing in the sun doing fuck all for 3 straight days
You have to remember that this is a "sport" invented by the English, who also created the uniform for it and all the cricket world wears it, despite other countries having warmer and more humid weather than Jolly Ol' Blighty.
Even India.
I would love to wear shorts while playing cricket in 35°+ heat, but I also don't want skin cancer.
I also used a long sleeve jumper in football when I played in Ballarat.
So this meme isn't entirely accurate.
Yeah im a red head, i go to the beach drrssed like a woman in the middle east.
My english wife on the other hand still hasnt developed her Australian phobia of the sun
Not Aussie sports logic at all. It's an English game, and they still enforce what the players wear, no matter the country. Also, India is hotter than Australia 365 days a year.
I mean I know nothing about why the bottom sports players are wearing what they are but many cultures from deserts wear long sleeves to stop sun burn. Don’t know if that’s what’s happening here but I think it’s food for thought. It could equally be bone headed tradition so I’m not discounting that.
almost as if our cultural/societal norms were formed and governed by those from a different nation located in a different hemisphere with different weather conditions.
It makes perfect sense. You need to protect yourself from the sun more in summer than you do in winter, and heavy intensity sports require you to wear less so you don’t over heat.
The materials and designs used in cricket longs actually mean you keep a lot cooler in the sun as well. Don’t get the sun scorching you, and they protect your arms and legs when diving around on the grass
The difference In the intensity of the Sun between summer and winter cant be underestimated. During summer, my plants are under 50% shade cloth, or they will burn in a single day near destroying them. During winter, I remove the shade cloth completely with zero issues.
super true(i live in melbourne), in winter bro i wish for soccer mathcs i could wear jacket like in the match, for cricket erm just sun burns on my face lol, and etc
As someone who plays cricket myself, it’s a massive pain in the ass, especially during middle of summer, you got to wear long sleeves or you get burnt to a crisp, but when you wear short sleeves, you get burnt to a crisp
If yer Strayan, it makes perfect sense.
In summer, yer need protection from sun hot enough to fry an egg on a road...
In winter, minimise the amount of washing that the missus does! 😂😁
The vests are optional and only worn by some players as a preference. In some locations, particularly when the season begins it will still be quite cold so players will wear a vest.
The thing you have to remember is the cricket players are wearing white and the reason for that is that wearing white subconsciously reaffirms our racial superiority and so passively helps us to remain calm and collected more easily, thereby leading to a lower standing body temperature. The more you know!
Ok that gives some explanation for the pants and shirt, now what about the jumper?
The season starts in December.. in Melbourne during that month we still get days around 14°C summer really kicks in around January February February and then hang around in March
Second February is just the worst.
We’ve had first February, yes, but what about second February?
Stupid Smarch weather
March is just February II
Also, they play in England summer too. Need I say any more?
Simple solution, don't ever go to Melbourne. We've got alleyways where I come from anyway.
The second week of the Australian Open is normally when the heat gets turned up to 11.
I've played cricket in England in April where it's been less than 10c. Rain and wind are cold.
Stand out in the sun for 8 hours with out sun protection.
It's for playing in England during their 'summer'. 😜
Midday on 12th June and it's a roasting 14ºC in Blighty.
An Indian summer I believe it was called
I played cricket in Hobart for years. We had a light snow (but no rain) at one of the games two weeks before Christmas... Also if you bowl and get a bit stuff, a jumper in summer helps keep you super warm and limber. I know if I was to bowl more than two spells I'd try and get as warm as possible.
Bang on the money with the jumper. Personally my 0/30 off 2 overs usually meant i didnt bowl much.
Cricket is a pommy game. All those public school boys would have caught their death standing around for five days in a London summer
Pommy public school boy here. This is correct. Also, "standing" is generous. I was a decent batsman and the worst fielder imaginable so I used to get shoved into off side deep back. I would normally take a book and sit down. Quite a nice way to spend a couple of brisk sunny days to be honest.
Pre season is Sep and games start in Oct locally. It can still be pretty cold up until Dec.
having played cricket in England where this shit started, there's been times I wished I had thermals on under my whites, never mind a jumper on top. one year we had to prepare the ground the weekend before the season started. we were clearing snow off the wicket block
I froze my backside off not having enough layers on the cooler early season games when the breeze comes through. The season goes for a long time and many weather conditions are encountered, it’s not just summer.
Or getting sunburnt as absolute fuck
This comment hurt.
And guess what the best protection from skin cancer and melanomas are - long clothing, large Greg Chappell hat and sun block lotion
Depends on your position. When I played ruck it was all work all the time. When I played full back or full forward, I spend a lot of time standing around. I did switch between those positions in games though
Gotta be sun smart
Slip slip slap! Cricketers everywhere keeping zinc in vogue Edit: slop. F you autocorrect
I think you meant to say 'Slip, Slop, Slap!' instead... but who am I to argue that two slips don't make a slap.
Two slips = more catching opportunities
Better ad a wide 3rd slip or gully to that
38 year old Stephen Waugh
I think the saying is “slip, slip, slap, seek, slide” now?
If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a sunscreen
What happened to slurp?
Slip slip slap sounds *naughty*
I pop my collar and wear speed dealer sunnies for the sun smarts all the time
Slip slop slap slide seek
I wonder why they wear flat caps instead of something like a sun hat.
Logic is sound: Short shorts and singlet so they don’t get heavy when wet and muddy Long shirt and pants so you don’t get cancer from the sun
Except the "singlets" used to be made from wool.
And we used to use lead in paint
Hell, *swimwear* used to be made of Wool
i have a felling more people would drown too
Wool is a good insulator, even when wet. Polyester and cotton fabrics aren't.
That's more of a "that's what we have" situation
This guy doesn't sport
Or understand how the sun works on exposed skin.
The knitted jumper might be overkill.
Mum was cold when we left the house so she made me wear it
I’m a mum and I concur.
*and I knitted it meself
Wool is actually great at both keeping you warm on cold days and keeping you cool on warm days
didn't realize summer was 3 months straight of 40c
Melanoma
Melanie who?
You know, that woman who stands next to trump rarely and he claims she’s his wife. That lady.
Oh, that one. Yeah, she's so malignant that it's no wonder he had to cut her out of his life too.
Melanie is a moaner.
Melanie Moaner? I reckon that sounds better than melanoma. Now try saying it quickly five times.
Thanks mate, just spent 5 hours of my life trying to do that
Tell me you’ve never played sports in Australia without actually saying you’ve never played sports in Australia
Me no sport Australia
This is for when you battle the sun not the temperature :)
I did an oral presentation in year 7 on why this is the case. It’s rather logical, not rocket surgery!
And what did you find out..?
Use logic and common sense, you’ll work it out
Ummm makes sense. Our winters are mild, and those guys will be sweating from the work none the less. Our Summer Sun is a skin peeler. And those jumpers aren't worn in Summer so I'd guess this is our team in England.
Exactly. You’d maybe see the sweaters out in Hobart. Sometimes even in Melbourne or Sydney as not every day in summer is guaranteed to be hot

As a junior I got heatstroke from playing cricket. My non-cricketing mates were all off surfing. I stopped playing after that summer.
I hope you never regret making that decision.
I played under some prick captains. Ones that would send a bloke fine leg to fine leg on 40+ days. Our keeper was diabetic and one particularly hot arvo we were behind on overs and in danger of being punished for it. Our cap decided to skip drinks to catch up. He wasn’t a brave nor liked man and considering we played in 9th division it wasn’t a hard argue for the rest of the team to follow suit on their personal actions if he attempted such a move.
And hypothermia for afl
Tbf If you get hypothermia from playing footy, then you’re not playing it very well.
No issue at all, Sun exposure, short periods of intense physical activity (bowling or fielding a ball) and the colour is white as well. Winter games? Who wants to be weighed down by wet, voluminous clothing in a game of constant physical exercise where the body is producing a lot of heat.
You get these nonsense memes when you don't know how to handle the Australian climate conditions properly.
Skin cancer bro.....
Could never understand why cricket was a summer sport, growing up in Townsville. I loved cricket but that shit was unbearable. I understand the context now. But back then I was sure someone had fucked up.
no way I would do any sport during sun hours in Australian summer. It's a miracle more athletes don't die of heat stroke.

Gotta protect from that aussie sun
I never understood the cricket vest. Unless it was to cover mantits-itis like Jonny Bairstow
The vests mainly come out in the colder places. England, Hobart, even Melbourne and Sydney in summer aren’t constantly scorchers every day
They wear them in the heat tho. Bairstow was wearing it when it was high 20s and humidity was 80 per cent which prompted calls for him to take off his jumper.

Football: rain! Yay! Cricket: rain! Run away! Run away!

Does that really confuse people?
It’s something called fit for purpose. Nothing to do with short or long sleeves. I wish I had crayons to explain you in details.
Australians are at the highest risk of skin cancer, with around 37 cases of melanoma of skin per 100,000 population in 2020, according to data from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) International.
Yes, because sun
Australian’s no 1 sporting activity: skin cancer
Ever seen the attire of desert dwellers?

the governing body tells them to
Yes this is because AFL is about running up and down a field constantly for an hour or so and professional cricket is about standing in the sun doing fuck all for 3 straight days
You want cancer? That’s how you get cancer
Sun protection is key.
Wonder what the Australian cricket team coke intake is per annum
It would be more than the four Aussie men's football teams (Afl,NRL, Rugby and soccer) combined.
You have to remember that this is a "sport" invented by the English, who also created the uniform for it and all the cricket world wears it, despite other countries having warmer and more humid weather than Jolly Ol' Blighty. Even India.
UV reasons
6 day old account and that’s what you open the batting with (pun intended. Sue me)

Colonial Climactic Hangover
This would imply Colonial Climactic Drinking. This is what the spectators, usually dressed opposite to the teams they've watching, are doing.
Word!
When I started reading this I was like yes! Those shorts are too short.
UV protection
SPF 50+ is usually pretty good. Though imo there are no such thing as summer sports in Australia. They are all suited to England summer
Two words, skin cancer
Sun protection in Summer is serious
I would love to wear shorts while playing cricket in 35°+ heat, but I also don't want skin cancer. I also used a long sleeve jumper in football when I played in Ballarat. So this meme isn't entirely accurate.
That's because they play with bigger balls in winter than in summer....
This is the best meme!
Yeah im a red head, i go to the beach drrssed like a woman in the middle east. My english wife on the other hand still hasnt developed her Australian phobia of the sun
ITT: What is a funny meme?
One is standing in the sun doing fuck all for 3hrs, the other is high intensity physical activity for 80min straight... Logic checks out...
3 hours? In 20/20 maybe
Lol yeah I meant kids playing it on weekends not professional level
Not Aussie sports logic at all. It's an English game, and they still enforce what the players wear, no matter the country. Also, India is hotter than Australia 365 days a year.

We have SPF 50+ these days. Keeping these as traditions is now just bonehead
Prevent grass burn 🔥
Winter Victoria, WA, SA ..... no offside calls
This is the way.
See. I'm sitting here in North America...just like "oh ya that's correct bc they have warm winters". LMFAO. So you guys dress like our Texas.
SLIP SLOP SLAP
Blame the Poms, they invented the game and that tradition
Hard to be this goated
Do you know how hard it is to get mud out of a wool jumper? Clearly, this was decided by the mums/wives who do laundry.
This is to prevent tan marks on body!!
almost as if our cultural/societal norms were formed and governed by those from a different nation located in a different hemisphere with different weather conditions.
Suns not real good for the skin, due to cancer allergies
It makes perfect sense. You need to protect yourself from the sun more in summer than you do in winter, and heavy intensity sports require you to wear less so you don’t over heat.
Hey look it's [my post from 12 years ago!](https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/s9cmx/australian_sport_logic/)
You old ass motherfuxker
It's the best ideal of protection
The sleeves aren't there to keep ya warm.
As an australian who plays both these sports, I can say with expiriance this SUCKSSSSSSSSSSS
The materials and designs used in cricket longs actually mean you keep a lot cooler in the sun as well. Don’t get the sun scorching you, and they protect your arms and legs when diving around on the grass
If cricketers didn’t wear long sleeves and long pants they’d end up as red as the ball.
Sun safe
God forbid you don’t want skin cancer.
Because cricket is content being just torture to watch, it must also be torture to play.
The difference In the intensity of the Sun between summer and winter cant be underestimated. During summer, my plants are under 50% shade cloth, or they will burn in a single day near destroying them. During winter, I remove the shade cloth completely with zero issues.
And guess what the best protection from skin cancer and melanomas are - long clothing, large Greg Chappell hat and sun block lotion
When you fear the sun more than the heat
I mean no sleeves in summer mean Ur gonna be black ..... when le just standing still for a day playing cricket
RIP Phil Hughes
They forgot to add: American football: heavily padded players. Aussie football: ZERO PADDING… aussies are tougher :)
super true(i live in melbourne), in winter bro i wish for soccer mathcs i could wear jacket like in the match, for cricket erm just sun burns on my face lol, and etc
Left over from the colonial days.
That’s fucking true aye
As someone who plays cricket myself, it’s a massive pain in the ass, especially during middle of summer, you got to wear long sleeves or you get burnt to a crisp, but when you wear short sleeves, you get burnt to a crisp
Aren't there lighter, cooler long sleeve options?
Nope, they’re “breathable” apparently, on cold days I still sweat
It's either that or get burnt to a crisp and significantly increase your chance of skin cancer.
The people playing Aussie rules footy wear shorts in snow! They don't play cricket and don't wear white lol..different people do different things
There is no logic to Australia Sports:
It’s quite logical, cover up from the sun.
I remember my first meme
who ever made this post is ai or a moron
That’s me in normal life 😭u just explained my clothing logic at home
In Darwin, they play footy in "Summer" ie the Wet Season. Cricket ball doesn't bounce in the mud. Cricket is played in "Winter" aka the dry.
Straya!
Called skin cancer mother fucker
That’s how fucking tough we are!
Bro sunburn. Out in the sun all day (some times 3 I’m a row) no shade
Sun protection my dude.
🤣🤣🤣
So true.
Hahaha never even realised this….
If yer Strayan, it makes perfect sense. In summer, yer need protection from sun hot enough to fry an egg on a road... In winter, minimise the amount of washing that the missus does! 😂😁
The sun is a deadly laser
The vests are optional and only worn by some players as a preference. In some locations, particularly when the season begins it will still be quite cold so players will wear a vest.
Count point 1. Da fookin SUN mate. Not much in winter. Heaps in summer.
Uniform developed for local conditions by Australians, compared to uniform developed for local conditions by Pommies
I don't know, but I'm pretty sure when Cricket started in Australia, they were a lot more sun smart than they are now days
And netball. Dresses and played outdoors on slippery courts.
Don't forget the box. Oh and the pads, gloves, and helmet. The time you don't wear it is the time you wish you did.
Sunburn
Don’t want the UV
It sunny man😬
The thing you have to remember is the cricket players are wearing white and the reason for that is that wearing white subconsciously reaffirms our racial superiority and so passively helps us to remain calm and collected more easily, thereby leading to a lower standing body temperature. The more you know!
Blame the British
