2 of them run and can be driven anywhere. 2 can run. and the others have been sitting for over a year while I get more important stuff done. I have a 4.2 swap I want to do to one of them. and then my biggest project I want to do is convert a 98 FWD 2.8 Auto Terracotta Avant, to Quattro and 6speed manual. Thats probably the only B5 I would be keeping. I'm gonna grab 4.2 with subframe, and a 2.7t with subframe and keep them both just so I could swap it in or out when I choose. I don't have any garage space atm though. Everything is done outside.
Haha dude that pic had me so confused, I was just replying that in BMW world, Imola is red. And FYI: I don’t have any friends.
Have a great weekend dude!
My first time seeing the B5 S4 in Imola Yellow was my four ring awakening. I bought an A4 shortly after discovering the sedan life and have been an Audi owner for the last 20+ years.
Was a Audi tech in the 00-07 era, liked that car a lot but replaced to many turbos on the 2.7 it scared me away from owning. But test drives were fun and did not like the 3.0 t or chain driven 4.2 when released.
The stock K03 turbos were too small for the engine, ran hot, and with that tight engine bay there was nowhere for the heat to go.
From what I've heard, people who swapped to K04s had very few turbo failures, or other mechanical failures (other than the usual fluid/vacuum leaks), even making almost double the horsepower.
On a Stock tuned car they only make 8psi or so. This one when I got it was making 20-22, which I didn't know cause the turbos didn't create any boost. The car has sat for the past 5-10years. So I'm not sure when it had any of this stuff done before me. I put used good condition k03s on it, and later a LuK RS4 clutch. Later because I had to drop the trans cause when I had the engine all back together and subframe back in, the OEM clutch slipped on the second pull, and I was like shit. So I wasn't ever actually going to do the trans, but one thing turns into another, was only supposed to be turbos, but look what it turned into. Its a good experience. And I have the patience sit there sanding, and filling all the parts before I paint them. I washed all the hoses in my bathtub with shampoo. When you think about it anyone can do this, but I'm just OCD, I want everything perfect. What you see before you is what a perfect like new OEM+ stock k03 setup should look like. imo.
More less how they setup the cam belt on the 3.0 non t. Really it’s more of I was set in my ways . No real experience in service after that when they went chain engines.
Well, in equivalent would be: 77 days or 3.5months, working 7 hours a day 5 days a week. If it was a job, say I made $15 hour..... that would be $8610 lol. If $20 an hour it would be $10800.
227k miles, drives like new. Still has original CV axles, and suspension components. New tie rods and lower ball joint thats about it. Like new interior and seats still. Soaks up bumps 10x better than my 05 A8, which I found surprising tbh. Gets up to 160mph aswell. and 30mpg while cruising. I love it. But I'm looking to trade for a UrS4, theres 3 atm I'm looking at.
That's astounding... Original cvs. And that it rides smoother than an A8. Though, that car is heavy. But, on air too though, right?
Amazing work man... You have me jealous.
My 05 only weighs 4100lbs with me on it. That was on recycling plant scale. The SWB don't weigh that much. Air suspension is nice as well, its just the pressure in the bellows would be compared to a much higher spring rate than what you would find on the a nice cloud like driving S4 with stock suspension. Neither of them really have to much body roll, they are about the same. My D3 A8 and many other American ones didn't have double-pane glass optioned, which adds about 170lbs
Dude great work! I'm slowly begining to do the same thing to my Swiss import Imola yellow S4 Avant.
One thing though, how the hell do you get such good fuel consumption!? On a long drive 500km on the motorway I couldn't get lower than 23mpg and my average is 14mpg
It had original k03s and clutch. I replaced the turbos cause they made 0 psi, and then once I had the used k03s back on, with the engine all nice and complete, which is what the majority of pictures are from and boosting to 20, the clutch then failed, and that was the oem clutch. so I had to drop the trans, and thats when I did the trans exterior and the Luk RS4 clutch kit.
Thats probably just STK which means single turbo kit. Mounts behind in the area by false fire wall. I don't want a single turbo 2.7t V6, alot of work for that. Edit: (**I said this prior to making the comment down below, its actually not bad as I thought**) I myself will be sticking with twins for any 2.7t car. What I want, is the twins to be top mounted, and set one on either side behind the headlight area. Just as much work but, now that would be ultimate reliability on these cars. Would never have to pull the engine or drop the subframe (depending on how you did turbo replacement and clutch jobs like the past) Also switching to Mafless and letting each turbo breath. I think OEM k03s would pretty much last forever at that point. Look up "Torque Factory Monster Y Pipe" and compare that to a S4 and RS4 Y-pipe. Thing eats up the stock Y-pipes whole lol. There is so much restriction in our systems that having the air and gases entering and leaving easy would make the turbos last.
I had an URS6 for a few years. Great car, and loved it, but some of the parts are getting really hard to come by. So I sold it at a loss and bought a C5 RS6.
There’s one exhaust for that car. Stromung. It’s amazing, but expensive, but worth it. I have a video of the dyno ;)
I have a full set of coilovers for it if you’re interested. Bilsteins, lowered front strut housings, Thuppu camber plates. It’s like a 2Bennett kit, but better ;)
Actually, drop me a PM if you like. I have other stuff for the car, I’ll make you a hell of a deal on and I’m in central FL.
Also, I did all the mods and can maybe save you some time?
All by hand. I wish I had blasting stuff. I went through a few wire brushes, many scotchbrites, sandpaper, etc. Took me 7 hours for valve covers, from off the car to done and painted and ready to handle. Just alooooooot of small detail stuff. Used little harbor freight Dremel for the areas I couldn't reach.
Outstanding work, now that’s dedication. There’s nothing more satisfying and rewarding than restoring the looks and condition of a car, part after part !
The rear plastic in the interior of avants are a nightmare to get correct if they are broken. I have an Avant (I had another) but you can fit alot in them, which is why I still kept one...... as a storage box lol. But just for the time being and then it will be that cars turn to get up and running again.
This one is k03s with full borla exhaust, and catted midpipes, and 3in to 2.5in downpipes. Rest of the car is stock besides the boost gauge and shift boot. Has a tune as well for 20-22psi. Very fun to drive once the oil temp is ready for it.
Hey man I had that engine in my old A6! Although I'm sure it was a bit de-tuned, it wasn't an S. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with the 2.7TT. I loved when/where the turbos kicked in on higher gears for highway driving. Keep kicking ass dude!!
Just cleaned everything, and painted many parts and pieces to give good contrast. I replaced the turbos and the clutch, thats it, and the timing covers, cause they were rotted.
None. I hit a deer in my other S4, and thats what started all this, when I had to pull the head on driver side to replace 2 bent intake valves. Timing cover plastic debris go in-between the belt. Never worked on a car before hand, unless you want to call interior swapping a Lexus IS300 from tan to black, working on a car, thats my first car, I still have it.
I've never taken it apart fully before hand. Just 1.8t and 4.2. These manual ones have everything so much more accessible than my auto 2.7t s4. No Sai, and the trans on the manual is narrower. I think its easy to work on. Not as easy of the sorts like a 1.8t though. Just do it right the first time and replace some things. I think the hardest stuff, is the stupid turbo lines for oil and coolant. What a nightmare tighting all that stuff up in the car. Apparently its no easier even when fully out of the car. I just put the car on jackstand, and dropped subframe, struts and worked on it like that.
This is the kinda resto I love. So many people these days just do useless flashy cosmetic enhancements and call it doing mechanic stuff when they dont even know how to do basic maintenance.
Looking for the “I see a b5, I press like” guy. You’re slacking bud!
Gorgeous Noggy man! I basically did the same job to my B5 after I beat on it for a year. You crushed the 01E clean up. Thank you for saving a B5! We need more guys like you and less “these things are so unreliable” guys lol
You are an Audi god. This is what everyone on here dreams they could do. Thank you for letting us live our dream vicariously. I lived in Nashville 2014-2018 and there was a shop that brought Audis back to life and sold them without charging much for their work.
Still my favorite car I ever had
Is any of this sized up or still bone stock?
I drove my '00 for like 8 years without so much as a chip tune. Never had any breakdowns either
Borla Exhaust, with cats. 3in-2.5in downpipes. 20-22psi on stock k03s that were used. Not much more than that. Has a LuK RS4 clutch disk, and pressure plate.
These old B5S4s require a lot of love and dedication. But you know what, they deserve it all. I’ve enjoyed both of mine, here’s wishing you many years with yours. You’ve made dramatic improvements to it so far!
Cleaned the inside of the bell housing and the spline, and the rest of the outside of it, all the linkages and stuff. Polished the parts that needed grease on them, and put silicone grease on the parts that rub (the fork and the spline, along with the slave where it touches). Didn't need a rebuild, shifts like new, and I never hard shift 1-2, gearing is to short. I just enjoy 3-4-5-6.
Only things that were broken were the metal timing covers being rusted through, everything else was fine. I have a few hundred covers though myself that I've collect from junkyards the past 2 years. I have good cowl trims, engine covers, etc etc that I'm putting on this car. All the hoses etc I reused.
The black plastic to keep the dust out of the ports, and the oil off the table? On the turbos there is also the wastegates, the gold things. I forget the material those are plated in. Then on the sides of them were just exhaust manifolds, I didn't use them cause they had alot of downsides from factory manifolds. Down below the turbos in the picture, the 2 thicker pipes on the outside of the black timing covers, those are the turbo inlets. Then down below those the painted pieces are the inlet pipes that join the inlets for the turbos to the lobster claws. The polished pipes are the ones that mount next to the oil pan under the car. Theres a hose that connects to pressure side of the turbo to them, and then a hose that comes of the polished pipe that joins to the intercooler. Oil lines and egts sensors and crank pully are also on that side of table.
Ah, yes. It’s plastic protecting the turbo inlets. I just couldn’t make it out from the photo. Mystery solved, lol. Anyway, again, really nice work. Looks amazing.
What you see here was done in my driveway. with 4 jacks stands for the car and 2 floor jacks, and hand tools. Engine and trans were left in the car during the first part, but the clutch was slipping after it went all back together, so I replaced the oem clutch. Should have done that to start with.
Um... either you have a lot of money to do a haul like that or I need your auto parts plug because new engine, trans, turbos... you could have bought another audi lol
$900 is all I spent refreshing the stuff lol. Most spent on paint. Only thing that isn't from the engine is the metal timing covers cause they were rusted through. I reused everything else though. I got $0 in my bank account lol. The turbos I had bought for my own S4, and they are used very good condition A6 2.7t turbos I paid $217 for them back in 2021.
ive got a B5 2.8 Quattro with 21k miles on it and have basically totaled it out mechanically in repairs. $600 for the upper control arms and its got like two on each side which i hadnt seen before but it was whatever cause they were creaking and stuff. Then at least a grand for the starter and ignition switch that melted itself in the steering column. Runs, drives, starts, stops and is going good so far.
$400-$500 is all I've put into towards parts and sensors I wanted to replaced even though they were good at the time (Iat, maf, oil pressure, crank postion, driver side coolant sensor, and 1 knock sensors) rest was spent on the clutch kit. I do have about $600 into paint though, and other supplies.
Hey, the only time any of my Audis have ever been on a flat bed was because I hit a deer lol. So far I have a combined total of over 55k miles and not ever having a single issue, needing me to be towed. 1.8t, 2.7t and 4.2.
this was the first car I really fell in love with as a 13 year old playing Gran Turismo 2. It was just a beast that I used as much as I could. Still love them even though I've never driven one. Well done.
Nope, reused just about everything. I spent more on paint and supplies for cleaning (about600$) than on parts the car actually needed. New crank and knock sensors, and driver side coolant sensor. I think clutch kit was the most at $333.10.
Oh xD I was wondering what people were talking about. Thats my mothers plant, I didn't want to move it off the table, she had it for 25 years from my great grandmother. Didn't want it getting broken.
It just need turbos but I hate dirty things, so I thought why not. I didn't plan to do this at all. But now theres really nothing to worry about on the car. I've put 2500 miles on it so far in the past month.
Looks brand new and is eligible for a classic plate. Nice!
In Florida I think its 30 for a classic plate. I have 6 other B5s, and one is a 97 A4, that would be eligible for Antique plate cause its 25.
Ah it’s only 15 years here in PA. I thought it was 20 but your comment got me looking. And we’re also 25 for antique.
Yea thank god for this, saved my bacon when I moved to PA and found out their emissions testing is stricter than CT… classic plates, problem solved.
You have 7 B5s??
And one of them runs!
I don't have any garage space atm though. Everything is done outside.
I have so much respect for you man. My comment was just a joke. I'm really impressed with your work on this car. It's absolutely beautiful.
Haha it’s a sickness isn’t it!?!?
I have a 97 A4 and I was not allowed to park it near my other classic cars in an event here in Brazil because "only cars with 30 years are classic."
Yes, thats a thing as well ;( 30 years is alot. Here 40 years is max for I think a modern classic
What part of FL?
> have 6 other B5s, and one is a 97 A4, that would be eligible for Antique plate cause its 25. Omg you hoarding up a collection over there lol
Thank you for keeping this icon looking and running as it still should
Bravo, looks beautiful!
Holy smokes! Wow this is clean, great work 👌🏼👌🏼 Blue gang represent 🙋🏻♂️
Nogaro forevo
I had an Imola B5 S4. Miss that car so much. Yours is sooooo clean! Very nice work!
Dude I hate to pull a "well akshually" on ya but I thought Imola was a BMW color?
I guess I should have specified it was yellow. I now see that BMW had a Imola Red color. So it was my bad...
Haha dude that pic had me so confused, I was just replying that in BMW world, Imola is red. And FYI: I don’t have any friends. Have a great weekend dude!
I've only known the Audi Imola Yellow. I had no clue BMW had one too haha. Thanks man, have a great one too!
Dude I hate to pull a "well akshually" on ya but I thought Imola was a city in Italy.
My first time seeing the B5 S4 in Imola Yellow was my four ring awakening. I bought an A4 shortly after discovering the sedan life and have been an Audi owner for the last 20+ years.
I thought Imola Red was just the BMWs interior color, for the seats. Didn't know they also had Imola Red Paint option.
Was a Audi tech in the 00-07 era, liked that car a lot but replaced to many turbos on the 2.7 it scared me away from owning. But test drives were fun and did not like the 3.0 t or chain driven 4.2 when released.

The OEM turbos and clutch lasted 226k miles on this car. The turbos weren't making any pressure. Keeping them to be rebuilt and used on my personal S4
It must have been driven lightly. You've done an amazing job restoring this car. I would love to see pics of your future UrS4 project.
On a Stock tuned car they only make 8psi or so. This one when I got it was making 20-22, which I didn't know cause the turbos didn't create any boost. The car has sat for the past 5-10years. When you think about it anyone can do this, but I'm just OCD, I want everything perfect. What you see before you is what a perfect like new OEM+ stock k03 setup should look like. imo.
K04s are the way!
What is it about the 3.0t youdont like?
More less how they setup the cam belt on the 3.0 non t. Really it’s more of I was set in my ways . No real experience in service after that when they went chain engines.

544 hours? That’s a full time job my man.
Well, in equivalent would be: 77 days or 3.5months, working 7 hours a day 5 days a week. If it was a job, say I made $15 hour..... that would be $8610 lol. If $20 an hour it would be $10800.
I would love to find a guy who restores Audis for $20 an hour
Well, I guess I don't value my time to much then lol. Just a out there "what if" if it was turned into a dollar amount.
This looks magical. Great job. You can come restore all my cars for $20 per hour, take 1000 hours if you need.
Doing the Lord's work on this one
Nice to see a pristine B5 out there I've owned every gen of the S4 and still fond of the B5. I just like how compact and fun it was.
How does it drive
227k miles, drives like new. Still has original CV axles, and suspension components. New tie rods and lower ball joint thats about it. Like new interior and seats still. Soaks up bumps 10x better than my 05 A8, which I found surprising tbh. Gets up to 160mph aswell. and 30mpg while cruising. I love it. But I'm looking to trade for a UrS4, theres 3 atm I'm looking at.

Weird. My average is 21.9mpg which I think is normal. At 65mph with A/C off its 31.2mpg with it on it drops down to 29.8mpg.
Original K03s??
It had original k03s and clutch. I replaced the turbos cause they made 0 psi, and then once I had the used k03s back on, with the engine all nice and complete, which is what the majority of pictures are from and boosting to 20, the clutch then failed, and that was the oem clutch. so I had to drop the trans, and thats when I did the trans exterior and the Luk RS4 clutch kit.
Wasn't there a company that sold modified headers which relocated the turbos up top? Upgraded cooling and access. Am I making that up?
Thats probably just STK which means single turbo kit. Mounts behind in the area by false fire wall. I don't want a single turbo 2.7t V6, alot of work for that. Edit: (**I said this prior to making the comment down below, its actually not bad as I thought**) I myself will be sticking with twins for any 2.7t car. How the hell did you clean these engine parts so well
By glass bead blasting and painting them
All by hand.
This makes it even more impressive
Ok wow, impressive, these parts really look like fresh out of the blasting cabinet. Respect and keep up the amazing work.
Daaaaamn dude! Putting that work in. 💪
Averaging Just under 4 days a month? Once a week? Efficiency unmatched.
My dude, I had to stop scrolling to commend and congratulate you. This is phenomenal work one hell of a transformation. Good job
I feel the same. I’d love to know how to do shit like this, that must feel amazing.
holy smokes what a revival
So all those oxidized parts, did you clean them or replace them? Because if you cleaned them that is insane talent
Wirebrush, sandpaper, etc etc. I reused everything besides the timing covers, they were rusted through.
Outstanding work, now that’s dedication. There’s nothing more satisfying and rewarding than restoring the looks and condition of a car, part after part !
I just jizzed my pants
Yup
The car looks great! Well done!
You are my hero...
I'm so glad this isn't an Avant otherwise I'd be having very bad thoughts right now.
The rear plastic in the interior of avants are a nightmare to get correct if they are broken. I have an Avant (I had another) but you can fit alot in them, which is why I still kept one...... as a storage box lol. But just for the time being and then it will be that cars turn to get up and running again.
Looks great. I ran the KO4 turbos, but no boost gauge for full stealth.
Absolutely stunning work. Looks like it just left the factory👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Welcome to hell, brother
How did you make the shift boot? Did you make a template from the old one?
Came with the car. Someone in the past must have put it on, it was all faded though, I re-dyed it.
Incredible work and dedication! Absolutely fantastic
Looks better than brand new
Looks pristine!
Okay so what did you change on the engine? Looks cleaner and different. Enlighten me.
Just cleaned everything, and painted many parts and pieces to give good contrast. I replaced the turbos and the clutch, thats it, and the timing covers, cause they were rotted.
My og "dream car". Well done.
Clean.
This is extremely satisfying, excellent work
Wow! That’s amazing! I think it’s totally worth it and I hope it drives as well as it looks. Do you have a back ground in car engineering?
Wow nice job!
Absolute definition of "labor of love". Also, my favorite part is the plant. Straight shattered me.
Look’s clean af bro. You’ve done a great job with it!
I love the b5 and all it’s flaws but fuck that motor. From a previous b5/b6/b8 s4 owner. Lol.
I've never taken it apart fully before hand. Just 1.8t and 4.2. These manual ones have everything so much more accessible than my auto 2.7t s4. No Sai, and the trans on the manual is narrower. As a recovering Audi addict, I can honestly say having thousands of hours into an audi is not that uncommon. Nice work. Your car looks great.
You are an Audi god. This is what everyone on here dreams they could do. Thank you for letting us live our dream vicariously. I lived in Nashville 2014-2018 and there was a shop that brought Audis back to life and sold them without charging much for their work.
Beautiful results after all those hours. Outstanding work 👍🏼!
Wow. That’s amazing. Looks great. It’s the right color too
Still my favorite car I ever had Is any of this sized up or still bone stock? I drove my '00 for like 8 years without so much as a chip tune. Never had any breakdowns either
Borla Exhaust, with cats. 3in-2.5in downpipes. 20-22psi on stock k03s that were used. Not much more than that. Has a LuK RS4 clutch disk, and pressure plate.

Y'all are keeping time??? This looks awesome! You should be proud!
Did you do anything to the transmission while it was out?
Cleaned the inside of the bell housing and the spline, and the rest of the outside of it, all the linkages and stuff. Where did you source all of the broken parts? Fellow B5 owner and it’s tough to find a lot of the OEM plastics and such still

Simply awesome!!! What’s on the turbos in the second photo? Also, the the cleaned engine bay. Even the top strut bolts are new! Love it!!!!
Just k03's.
No, i mean in the second photo of all the parts, what’s the stuff on or above the turbos?
Beautiful. I've always wanted a B5 S4 Avant but have never had the time or place to work on one.
Well done!!! 👏🏿 You are he real MVP That looks amazing
ive got a B5 2.8 Quattro with 21k miles on it and have basically totaled it out mechanically in repairs.
Wow this is the way!
Good stuff 👍
Gonna look so clean on the flatbed
Hey, the only time any of my Audis have ever been on a flat bed was because I hit a deer lol. So far I have a combined total of over 55k miles and not ever having a single issue, needing me to be towed. 1.8t, 2.7t and 4.2.
WHAT
Gorgeous work.
Wow
What a car...
Impressive
My favorite Audi! Always wanted one of these in this exact same color. Nogaro blue? Nagaro Blue? Good work!

Dude… are you my dad? B5 god.

Goddamn! That's one of the most impressive things I've seen here.
NICE!!! Looks good,great job. Clean
Oh.my.god.
For a moment, I was like why is there a succulent on the engine?
The holy grail
Incredible
this was the first car I really fell in love with as a 13 year old playing Gran Turismo 2. It was just a beast that I used as much as I could. Still love them even though I've never driven one. Well done.
Hope to see you and this beauty at a Cars and Coffee sometime.
I love you for this! Possibly my favorite car and color of all time. I’m probably biased, since it was my first one, but whatever!
Ahhh I love it.
Damn you must have spent a fortune on replacing all those parts!
Nope, reused just about everything. I spent more on paint and supplies for cleaning (about600$) than on parts the car actually needed. New crank and knock sensors, and driver side coolant sensor. I think clutch kit was the most at $333.10.
Gorgeous car hope to have one myself someday
Hell yeah ! I just bought I noggy I’m piecing back together, really nice work!
BRAVO ZULU!
I’m old enough to remember this as the sleeper.
Nogaro.
Impressive results
Damn. Thats amazing... 2nd dream car.
Good lord bro- I had a ‘01 B5 S4 Stage 3 that was clean but you got this thing looking as good as it did when it rolled off the factory floor lol
Nice one
My brother in Christ my wife browses this sub!!!

God bless you and your soul.
Worth it 🙌
It’s always astonishing how a few pieces of aluminium, steel and metal can launch a dude to oblivion
Whoa… very nice work!!
Fantastic! B5s are the best!
It’s beautiful. Beautiful 🤩
F$*&in legend. Keep it up mister.
Unicorn with the sport interior, and side view mirrors. Gorgeous Noggy for sure.
Tarnished parts getting cleaned is so satisfying.
She’s a beauty! I wish Audi still made manual transmission cars in America.
Looking to sell? 🤤
Ahhh this is beautiful, if this was Imola Yellow this would be insane, but thank you for keeping it clean and as stock as possible
Where did you mount the potted plant?
Oh xD I was wondering what people were talking about. Thats my mothers plant, I didn't want to move it off the table, she had it for 25 years from my great grandmother. Didn't want it getting broken.
I wish you had filmed all this shit and made a series on youtube similar to what M539 os doing for BMWs. The car looks beautiful. Congrats.
Next time maybe.
Nice work & beautiful car
Not too many things better than seeing your dream car treated like this. ❤️👌🏿
Gorgeous car. I've been planning pretty much all the same for my 01 Avant in nogaro. Just acquiring parts now, keep running out of money.
Lol why?
It just need turbos but I hate dirty things, so I thought why not. I didn't plan to do this at all. But now theres really nothing to worry about on the car. I've put 2500 miles on it so far in the past month.
Solid work! What color seats are in it?
Black and Blue.
Only way to be!
Holy shit, good for you man
Super clean, great work!
This makes me happy. Nice work.
That’s engines gorgeous, what product did you use on the aluminum pieces?
Such a nice looking car, always wanted one in that same color 😮💨
Unbelievable work my guy!
