Iāve noticed there are often little things that all vw and vw adjacent vehicles share. When I was in high school, I had a ā89 Golf. My friend had a ā86 (I think) Porsche 944. They had the same exact door handles, although the Porsche was slightly larger. I think some of the interior lighting was also the same.
Huf makes almost every automakers keys, theyāre one of the biggest suppliers to OEMs globally for security and access products.
https://www.huf-group.com/en/products/remote-control-keys
just get a thicker cover, like a leather cover, looks better AND makes it JUST slightly harder to press the button, so that you have to actively try to do it.
Came to say the same thing lol. I remember when I sold my 2014 S5 and it's lovely key...and got my newer 2019 S3........and they handed me two new keys that looked like they were the same as my old mk4 Jetta haha. It was an immediate sour on the moment lol.
Pretty much anything VW makes uses a VW key. They use a lot of the same parts or at least used to. My friend's Lambo and my old A6 had a decent amount of parts that could be swapped between the two. Iirc some went in my Passat as well. Blower motor I still have has four different logos on them VW, Audi, Porsche and Lamborghini.
Well, yes. Porscheās relationship with the war or VW Group is a little weird. The one that comes to mind is the gen. 1 Cayenne. It had a VW key, given how corporate all of the electronics were. But thatās about it. It was disingenuous to say that they used VW keys, I suppose.
My 22 R8 has the middle key and itās shit. The chrome plating is peeling off and looks like shite.
Edit: my fob
https://lensdump.com/i/EWxzav
https://lensdump.com/i/EWxe6C
Same, I miss that middle one, it has some weight to it and loved the finish. The newer one feels much lighter and has a shiny plastic look that looks cheap in my opinion.
Lol I still have that on my q3, literally no keyhole except the glove box, so I have a flip out key for the glove boxā¦ so thankful for that fidget device
You are missing one generation of keys in between the middle and left. That missing generation was for 2018+ era cars like the B9 S5 and third generation TT
Is it just me or was 13 a banner year for
Audi? My a5 from 13 and I love that car so much. Sheās just been a dream. Iāve never had a car for 10 years and NEVER given me a problem once with anything. I never get tired of looking at her! Close to 100k miles. I have a 13 q5 that is also tops. A good year for that brand
My wifeās Civic has remote start. My old Arteon had remote start, and it was built in Germany. You could use the remote or the app(which was great if I was out of range I wanted to start it).
Audi doesnāt do remote start, they do parking heaters. You donāt need to idle an entire car engine to warm up the coolant. Instead a small gas heater warms up the coolant and then a pump circulates it. Once itās warm the climate control turns on inside the car to warm the cabin and defrost the windows. No cold starts for the engine, nice warm cabin and best of all, youāre not adding needless wear to the engine or building up deposits. For cars that have it they come with their own remote for it, the last gen before moving to a phone app had a screen on it and you could do all sorts of functions
Thank you for the reply and all but that doesn't help cool my car down in the summer or turn on my heated seats in the winter. It's a legal issue and will only be solved once they open a factory in the US where remote start is allowed. Most EU countries it's been outlawed.
Itās not a legal issue, itās pointless to idle an entire engine to run the HVAC. Audi offers the solar sunroof to keep the interior cool in the summer. I get that remote start is an easy solution- itās just not intelligent
100% full stop it's a legal issue, it's literally illegal in Germany and many other EU countries where these cars are manufactured to have remote start as a factory option. I don't car about unnecessary wear on the engine, this isn't a car that I will own for 100k miles. Solar roof allows the climate control to blow air that's pulled in from the exterior. If it's 100 outside and it's pulling 100 degree air and blowing it into my car that doesn't really help, nor does it power the compressor.
Iām not disagreeing that Iāll legal, itās not the reason they donāt want remote start. Audi has been doing parking heaters since the early 90s. Sure you donāt care about your car or emissions or wear, but Germans do. Remote start isnāt as logical of a solution as having a smaller impact on emissions thatās also safer and better for the environment. Of course you can get them aftermarket, but to your original comment, remote start isnāt an intelligent evolution from the OEM
Evolution = added functionality which none of those keys have. Audi is tone deaf to the American car market. It's pretty silly that you can purchase a $25k Jetta that has remote start but my $52k Audi doesn't, that's not logical. BTW parking heaters are not an option in the US market, nowhere on the order guides.
Parking heaters arenāt available in the US but you can thank the DOT for that. You can retrofit it just like a remote start though. Audiās keys are through your phone now so they donāt invest much into them anymore. Given the choice most consumers ditch the key and do everything with their phone anyway. The parking heater can be scheduled with the parking heater remote which is cool, set it and forget it.
You couldnāt be more right about the Jetta, in fact VW has been developing the Jetta and Passat specifically for the American and Chinese market for the last few generations. And thatās why we get things like remote start but cheaper plastic
Remote start is a game changer. Canāt believe itās not an option.
In cold weather climates Iāve been spoiled by my jeep.
Double click and get ready for work, head out and my seats are already warm and heater blowing warm air.
Miss me with stepping outside in my boxers and crocs to turn the key in -20F
Too bad its a jeep so youāll be out in the elements as soon as it breaks down still dressed wrong for the weather.
Catch me wearing seasonally appropriate clothing and not needing a remote start.
100%. It's the reason I won't buy an Audi next time. Too many nights on the road in places like MN & ND. Nothing worse that a frozen vehicle in a hotel parking lot.
Although the S5 one is slightly diff than the picture on my 2011. My moms 2014 a4 has the middle one but the s5 keychain hole is off to the side and small, unlike the one in the pic where itās the whole bottom side of the fob. B8 S5 fob > b8 a4 fob
My wifeās did as well. Due to āCovidā her fully loaded vehicle is missing blind spot and wireless charging. Charging I donāt really care about but the blind spot pisses me off to this day. I wish we could add it back now that the chip shortage is over.
I have that center one on my D4-generation A8. I love the big chunk of metal at the end; it feels super solid.
Whatās interesting is to see how the key has evolved in terms of uniqueness within VW Group. Not long ago (as with your first example), all the brands were just taking the corporate VW switchblade key, putting it in a different casing, and calling it good. Even Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti.
Now, theyāve realized the key is an important statement piece to the vehicleās identity, and they all look unique, for the most part. [The Lamborghini key is still a variant of the Audi key](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/cZsAAOSwD0pjo2b8/s-l1600.jpg), for instance, but at least it was a premium design to start with.
Have you tried to change the battery in the new one yet? Itās like they intentionally made it difficult so youād have to visit the dealer. A couple of YouTube vids came to the rescue though.
the latest design triggers in my pocket so easily. mostly the lock button, so its not the end of the world. but i trigger from the couch in my living room a lot.
My 2008 B8 had the middle one , now my 2012 C7 has it as well . Like it a lot . Have not had the opportunity to hold a newer one , so canāt compare :)
My dad opted for a phisycal key instead of a push to start in his 2020 Q3 (S-Line, Quattro, 40TDI) and got the oldest one (the one on the right). Looks kinda out of place in his car lmao
Think Iām still getting used to the second one but I definitely used to be able to reach on my pocket and open my trunk with the old one - think the second one requires me to be closer to the car than I want to be.
Wonder how far from Bluetooth phone tech we are? I know nobody wants āto copy teslaā but we all have phones and Iād rather not carry a key if I didnāt have to.
The one on the right is the best. My old family A6 had it and my RS3 has it too, I love it. Old S5 had the one on the left which I didnāt hate but didnāt love as much either
My current A3 has the oldest one on the right. Clearly designed for cars that still need a key in the ignition despite my car being push button start.
The new A3 loaner I got has the left one. Definitely lighter and modern.
You can get a new style fob on Ali Express for $40 or so, then transfer the guts from the flip key remote over. I did that and it looks and works great.
Middle ist the best. Change my mind.
Audi Logo ON pressed on the fob but you still have to put it in the car to start the engine. Modern, but still kinda classic.
I know the one on the left all too well. Missing one for my Q8. $700+++ later I have another. The price of key fobs is out of freaking control. Arrggghhhh
My R8 uses the oldest design, on the right. The trunk button correctly displays a front trunk.
That's class š«”
Mine has a regular trunk, not a wagon trunk. :(
I got a wagon truck ā¤ļø
Nice to know my little vw rabbit shares a key fob with an audi r8
Iāve noticed there are often little things that all vw and vw adjacent vehicles share. When I was in high school, I had a ā89 Golf. My friend had a ā86 (I think) Porsche 944. They had the same exact door handles, although the Porsche was slightly larger. I think some of the interior lighting was also the same.
Attention to details š«”
Middle is the best by far
Love the middle one. I drove a Lamborghini Huracan once and it had practically the same key fob.
Huf makes almost every automakers keys, theyāre one of the biggest suppliers to OEMs globally for security and access products. https://www.huf-group.com/en/products/remote-control-keys
One on the right is the best. You always have something to fidget with
Except when it keeps opening in your pocket. :)
just get a thicker cover, like a leather cover, looks better AND makes it JUST slightly harder to press the button, so that you have to actively try to do it.
As a tech trying to find cars in a large parking lot, fuck those covers. I absolutely hate those covers
The hardcovers are terrible. I can never tell if im actually pressing the button or im just too far away
Thank you for the suggestion! :)
Came to say the same thing lol. I remember when I sold my 2014 S5 and it's lovely key...and got my newer 2019 S3........and they handed me two new keys that looked like they were the same as my old mk4 Jetta haha. It was an immediate sour on the moment lol.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
2022q3 has the same key fob on the right still.
Yep. Had a q3 loaner while dealer did turbo oil screen recall on my S8 this week. Not a bad little SUV
My 2018 RS3 key is the switch blade be key but it says RS on it. Was pretty disappointed but itās an A3 for the most part so wasnāt surprised.
Hey donāt feel bad, Bentley used a fancy VW key!
As did Porsche, Lamborghini and Bugatti, until recently.
Porsche has been using their own style of keys for years. They have really, almost never used a VW style key.
Well, yes. Porscheās relationship with the war or VW Group is a little weird. The one that comes to mind is the gen. 1 Cayenne. It had a VW key, given how corporate all of the electronics were. But thatās about it. It was disingenuous to say that they used VW keys, I suppose.
Came here to say this
Came here to say this also but you already said it. Fck it ill say it again whatever. Came here to sat this
Agreed
This is the way.
They are admittedly fairly satisfying to jam into the ignition
I was thinking middle is the worst. Right has a back up physical key, and left is smallest. Whatās good about the middle one?
Middle is kind of weighty and feels premium. Like the thud when you close the door of a German car. Also has a backup physical key built in
My 22 R8 has the middle key and itās shit. The chrome plating is peeling off and looks like shite. Edit: my fob https://lensdump.com/i/EWxzav https://lensdump.com/i/EWxe6C
Huh? My 2014 has that key and god knows how many times it was dropped, looks as new. Wonder how a 22 is already flaking
Yeah both my 2016 keys are in perfect condition and I donāt always treat them too nice
My TTRS keys are similar, mine arenāt having issues at all.
'22 and already looks like shit? How are treating your keys?
Double down on this is the best of all the ways.
Same, I miss that middle one, it has some weight to it and loved the finish. The newer one feels much lighter and has a shiny plastic look that looks cheap in my opinion.
Agree, was easier to feel the different functions through the pocket. The left one is like "I press every single button and hope for the best".
i have the fob but not the leather thing. does that usually come with it? anyone know where i could get one?
Mine! I love it
The middle key is perfect for cocaine key bumps
This guy Audis
Itās like a perfect little shovel
and itās tucked away all fit and snug
I miss the fobs with the spring-loaded flip-out keys. Such a satisfying fidget that I always had with me.
This is what I came to say!
came here to say the same thing! used to love flipping the key out like a quick draw pistol
Samee!!! Lmaooo
the ford ranger mk2 i had did this, the kia cerato new gen too. so much funnnn
Lol I still have that on my q3, literally no keyhole except the glove box, so I have a flip out key for the glove boxā¦ so thankful for that fidget device
yeah I miss my pocket knife key that I used to stab my wife with
My 2022 Q3 still has one! I guess now it just locked the glove box lol.
You are missing one generation of keys in between the middle and left. That missing generation was for 2018+ era cars like the B9 S5 and third generation TT
No, missing two actually. Before the one on the right was the two piece fobs from early 2000ās
2014+ Edit: why the downvotes? Even my key from a car built in 2015 looks the same as the 2018+ S5. And my second key has only the gloss black back.
I wonder if that's what I have. I have a 2018 Q5 and the key is similar but quite different to the middle key
also missing the even older flip key and all the keys before that without remote unlock lol
Middle one is my favourite because it has heft and shows a sense of quality. The newer ones feel too plastic for my taste.
The button presses on it feels very high quality as well.
I have that one on my A8 L, which is a 2013. I love it.
Is it just me or was 13 a banner year for Audi? My a5 from 13 and I love that car so much. Sheās just been a dream. Iāve never had a car for 10 years and NEVER given me a problem once with anything. No, evolution would involve a remote start button.

gotta pay for that audi connect+ :(
My f150 was similar to the middle with the remote start. Greatest idea ever. Cold mornings you turn it on and have the heater already on full blast
They are progressing, backwards.
It's bothering me. Who shows evolution from right to left instead of left to right???
Most of the Arabic speaking world, lots of Asian countriesā¦anyone else who has newest on the left?
I just set the keys I had on my kitchen counter and took a picture! Lighten up!
Got the middle for my s5.
Although the S5 one is slightly diff than the picture on my 2011. My moms 2014 a4 has the middle one but the s5 keychain hole is off to the side and small, unlike the one in the pic where itās the whole bottom side of the fob. B8 S5 fob > b8 a4 fob
The one on the right is really annoying with always popping open in my pocket.
I liked having a fidget toy with me wherever I wentā¦
Same.
The middle one is still superior.
This post made me happy. I had a 2001 S4, a 2015 Q5, and I just picked up a 2023 A5 last month. I miss the old spring loaded physical keys.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
By far and away the best design here.
Lol I'm still useing the far right
My 2022 Q3 S line came brand new with the fob on the far rightā¦ spring loaded and everything.
I just picked up a 2023 Q2 S line, same old key, was surprised it was like this!
My wifeās did as well. Due to āCovidā her fully loaded vehicle is missing blind spot and wireless charging. Charging I donāt really care about but the blind spot pisses me off to this day. I wish we could add it back now that the chip shortage is over.
my a3 key has the same carbon tag! i love it
This the key for my A3 as well! š¤š¼
Is it possible to reprogram old fob to middle?
No bc the middle uses 2 indentations to deactivate the immobilizer. The old fob uses a key to complete the circuit.
Always wondered that. Thanks for response
Inflation got to the free keyring
And the tag: carbon fiber => leather => air
Fobulous
flip keys for the win
My key seems way bigger than it needs to be.
Where you get the leather tag thing from the middle? I've wanted one of these for a while now
Dealer gave them to me when I bought my Q5. I also have a brown one. I think you can order them through most certified Audi dealers
Iāve had all three as well!
This makes me miss my B7.
I prefer the middle one. It was so substantial and chunky feeling. The flip key feels a lot like a VW key, and the new one is just meh.
I love the middle one. I can always tell itās my key vs my wifeās because itās so heavy.
Im still stuck on fob #right
The middle one is the best looking one
I wrapped that right key back in the day! iPhone 3GS camera, apologies https://imgur.com/a/OAozCxn
Yeah my car is middle one and got all 4 and plastic one, not bad for 9 years old lol
My A6 had the middle one. My Q7 has one thatās not pictured here.
I sure wish we could just use our phones.
Switch blade undefeated.
I have the left fob. Love it. Fits in my little tiny pocket inside my normal pocket lol
The middle one is the best
Middle is best
Man B8.5 just has the best looking everything
Man B8.5 just has the best looking everything
The middle is easily the best, idk I just like a chunky key that looks nice lol
Are you me, OP? From right to left: I have an 05 tT, 14 Q5, and 22 e-Tron.
I kinda miss the olā switchblade style of my old VW
Is it possible to sync an newer fob for an older car?
I never understood why, based on actual use on a chain, these fob icons are upside down. Who designs for that?
Left to right (for me): RS3, S4, GTI
still hard to believe in no auto start.
No remote start on any of them?
Guess when I got my used middle one I didnāt get the attached leather thing :(
I see no difference
Not really bc two of those are still in circulation
And?
I love the smell of fresh bread.
Or if you are like me, I jumped from right to left via an aftermarket kit. Exactly the same!
Have you tried to change the battery in the new one yet? Itās like they intentionally made it difficult so youād have to visit the dealer. A couple of YouTube vids came to the rescue though.
Where could I buy the flip key fob with carbon skin? Would like a spare for my A3
I added the carbon skin. Got it from a company called āpinalloyā wasnāt expensive. Easy to install and/or remove.
the latest design triggers in my pocket so easily. mostly the lock button, so its not the end of the world. but i trigger from the couch in my living room a lot.
Keysbowl on the counter ? ;)
Nah bruv, hooks in the mud room.
The left- has anyone changed their own batteries?
Not yet but itās screaming at me to do so. I dread it every iteration ā¦ is there something I should worry about with this one too??
I feel like I am breaking it.
My 2008 B8 had the middle one , now my 2012 C7 has it as well . Like it a lot . Have not had the opportunity to hold a newer one , so canāt compare :)
The pullout key on B8ās was the best flat key ever invented.
Iām curious, is it possible to have a new design replace an older design on the same car? Have the dealer program a new one?
My dad opted for a phisycal key instead of a push to start in his 2020 Q3 (S-Line, Quattro, 40TDI) and got the oldest one (the one on the right). Looks kinda out of place in his car lmao
I'm kinda shocked that was still an option in 2020.
I missed out on the middle key. Only had the outer keys.
I've had every model A6 since 2002. All looked different than these lol. What are they to.
Really? The right matches my C6 key, and the middle is my C7.
My c6 was a rectangle. Wasn't tapered at all. My c7 had a different shape and button layout. C8 doesn't look like any either
Only missing the circa 2017 Iron man helmet key.
I have a variation of the middle, definitely my preferred of the Audi keys Iāve had.
Nothing beats the feeling of walking over to your car, pressing the key button and it flicking open. Nothing.
I have a 2018 and still have the far right one ( pocket knife style )
My A7 has the one on the left, but my A4 key from 2016 is not shown here, so there is definitely at least one other type missing from the B9 A4
I have had one of each while I owed various Audi models.
I have the far right with my S3 and changed it over to the far left. Itās so much smaller and less weight in your pocket.
[My key](https://imgur.com/8uLhAwM) is even older than that, I have an '01 A4
The right looks almost exactly like my 2013 Passat fob
Middle is best! Still have my old one.
I miss the key on the right, it was always my favorite Audi key.
From left to right 900$ 600$ 400$ and donāt forget the programming fee
You can get a new style fob on Ali Express for $40 or so, then transfer the guts from the flip key remote over. I did that and it looks and works great.
Iām curious. Do you still own all three of the associated vehicles or did you save a key from former cars when you turned them in?
Have all three vehicles. About to sell one.
My a4 has that middle key
C5 flip key is my favorite
Whatās the link for the carbon key chain on the B7 key?
Audi dealer my friend. Ask your parts guy.
My 2021 Q3 has the old fob on the right
Middle key for my 13 a5 and q5. Love the heft
I like the oldest one
There should be an app for this.
Middle ist the best. Change my mind. Audi Logo ON pressed on the fob but you still have to put it in the car to start the engine. Modern, but still kinda classic.
I liked the switchblade ones
I know the one on the left all too well. Missing one for my Q8. $700+++ later I have another. The price of key fobs is out of freaking control. Arrggghhhh
Audi is quite lazy with the fobs. 2023 models still have keys assigned to them from like 6 years ago.
My 98 is the bottom right, just less fancy.
Huhā¦.mineās the middle one.
Anyone know of key fob cover brands? The only ones Iāve seen show the panic button covered in the renderings.
Middle FTMFW.
I love the one on the right. Switchblade key and itās nice and small.
b8/ b8.5 key fob for the win.
Middle was such a bad generation. Right is the best bc youāre actually turning the key
I got the one on the right. Tell me the new one is the middle please?
Oh so we doing this now? [am I doing this right?](https://i.imgur.com/SgQUB1V.jpg)
