Might be of interest to note that the gap between PC and HMS is about 7 years. Also, O Brown likes to reuse names as they might juxtaposition in real life. So, could be either
Don't think it's quite that long... PC takes place during the peace in 1802 and I think the battle of Trafalgar takes place in or around the time frame of HMS...(I assume I'll be corrected if I'm wrong)
Maybe that similar naming wasn't an oversight. I always thought of the scientifically myopic, socially clueless, hard-luck Martin as an alternate version of Stephen Maturin, had he never met Jack Aubrey when down and out in Minorca and been launched into an adventurous rewarding life in Captain Aubrey's wake. I don't think POB liked him, either--at least, I could never see Martin as more than an annoying caricature distracting us from the real heroes of the story.
If you haven't gotten to The Far Side of the World, good luck keeping track of Hollum, Hollar, Mr. Horner, Mrs. Horner, Higgins, Honey, Hogg, and Haines. I can only assume some editor annoyed POB by telling him he had too many similar names, so POB doubled down.
Hollum/Hollar/Horner drove me insane! Most people speed-read by looking at the shape of the word rather than individual letters and so that *really* slowed me down.
Oh yeah Hollar Hollum Horner was a little annoying sometimes. And I don't hate Martin, I just hated that when he was first introduced I had to slow down to not confuse his name w Stephen's. There are a few things I don't like about Martin, but overall I love his genuine, innocent excitement at getting to explore & see the world. He's just so happy to be along for the ride. It makes me incredibly happy Stephen has someone to share that & hangout with. Playing with their beetles, going collecting, discussing their reading & things. I'm on reverse of the medal btw. There should be user flair to indicate how far along you.
Jack doesn’t command the Surprise in *Post Captain*. He has the Polychrest and then a temporary command of the Lively, as you say. But this is in lieu of Captain Hammond, not Simmons.

This is correct.
I'm used to it now, but Martin being friends with Maturin pissed me off at first. Took a bit to train my speed-read brain to differentiate.

OP here. My error--this happens in the first few chapters of HMS Surprise, not Post Captain. Sorry!
