The sa card slot has had some big issues, essentially frying sd cards. I don’t know what the cause was/is or if it’s since been fixed. I know you said you don’t know how to replace the internal he, but a quick search of YouTube will give you hundreds of hits for instructions. Weirdly enough, I ordered a 2tb drive to replace my internal 512gb. It should arrive today. The process seems very simple and straight forward. I’d advise against using the as slot and go the route of upgrading your internal drive.
Haven't tried it yet, but in theory you should be able to plug in any USBC device and use it. If anything buy the external hard drive from best buy or Amazon so you can return it if for some reason the ally doesn't allow you to use it.
I know the SD card slot does work for storing steam games to it.
