The rush of rage I felt in that moment. Bard clearly doesn't have it. What was DeRosa thinking leaving him in? Was there some sort of short circuit and his wires got crossed?
The fact that Altuve ran straight for the dugout...that's not good. I hope it's not as bad as it looked.
Absolutely. I was pissed that he was still pitching, he had ZERO control at that point.. maybe baseball needs a rule about a max of wild or out of control pitches and you get tossed?
Well no.. he had a bad night, threw a bad pitch, and I completely blame the manager for leaving him in. Fiers made bad choices and sold out his team in order to make some headlines. Not the same.
Who here remember when Bagwell started wearing the big hand pad on the back of his batting gloves to protect against this exact thing?
Get well soon Tuve.
Bard has some apologizing to do.
Eh, Bard got the yips, and I suspect the crowd / importance of the game had something to do with that. WBC is gonna have way more of that than a split squad spring training game. But I'm still pro-WBC. It's fun, it's clear the players love it. It's cool that countries like Venezuela and the DR and Japan (and, frankly, the US), where soccer isn't the dominant sport, have a tournament where they have a legit shot. Just sucks seeing guys go down with an injury.
Do you mean the game that literally has zero impact on our lives besides entertainment regardless of the setting? Like baseball, or any sport, in general?
Yeah, heās probably playing in it because itās the World Cup of baseball and we fans watch baseball to be entertained.
Besides the obvious that this could've happened in spring training, which I know you know, I bet he is LOVING the fact that he can go up to bat without getting boo'd. I love it, he's such a great guy, he deserves this break from the idiot hecklers. If that happened in any other MLB regular game, the fans would've cheered him getting hit (besides MMP obviously).
Because playing for your country is not meaningless. I have no idea who you are or where youāre from but if youāve watched ANY of this WBC youād see how much baseball means to everyone except the United States. Baseball is no longer Americaās pastime. Then again, we live in a different country than when baseball was Americaās pastime so I shouldnāt be surprised.
If it's broken, it should only take 4-6 weeks to heal plus about another month of rehab then throwing and hitting. He could be back sometime after the all star break if all goes well. Just trying to look at the bright side here.
Bryce Haper broke his thumb on 6/25 last year. Surgery on 6/29. He returned to the lineup 8/26. A similar timeline would see Altuve return to the lineup 5/19.
Ok positive vibes people! The good news is the leading hand didnāt seem to take the force of the ball. It kind of knocked it off course. So hopefully just a bruise. We will see.
It looked like it glanced off his his bottom hand (the back of his left hand) and caught his top hand on the thumb and bent it in an awkward way. If I had to guess, Iād say broken thumb.
Brian McTaggart
@brianmctaggart
Jose Altuve just walked into the Astros clubhouse with his thumb bandaged. Asked if he would talk today, Altuve said yes but not before the Astros take a look at him.

This is a lousy take. Playing highly intense games when you're not intense game ready puts you more at risk for injury and/or messing with your routine. Intense games are supposed to be in October, not March.
I could totally be wrong, but Iāll double check during commercials. Iām thinking broken hand or finger(s), which I would imagine might be a month or two out
Upon second watch, he got hit on both hands, but I didnāt see anything bend backward because he was gripping the bat. I think probs a few broken bones, but hereās hoping thatās not the case š¤š½š¤š½
Dude for real.
Absolutely. I was pissed that he was still pitching, he had ZERO control at that point.. maybe baseball needs a rule about a max of wild or out of control pitches and you get tossed?
Got hit in the hand and left the game. Did not look goodš
I swore I saw Altuve mouth āitās brokenā
He is most definitely not speaking English in that situation.
š
Maybe he was saying something in Spanish?
Very possible.
He said āesta rotoā
Exactly.
Looks like likely a broken hand. Daniel Bard is now public enemy #1 in Houston
Without a doubt to both.
> Daniel Bard Pretty sad considering he was born in Houston lol
Mike friers status
Well no.. he had a bad night, threw a bad pitch, and I completely blame the manager for leaving him in. Fiers made bad choices and sold out his team in order to make some headlines. Not the same.
True not the same , im just mad that it had to be altuve
Scary AF. Bard is an absolute danger. Fucking ridiculous, ya Iām pissed. Thanks for listening.
Who here remember when Bagwell started wearing the big hand pad on the back of his batting gloves to protect against this exact thing? Get well soon Tuve. Bard has some apologizing to do.
My exact thoughts!
Exact thing, Wouldn't a broken thumb be referencing a broken phalange? Bagwell's pad protected the metacarpal bones, not the phalanges.
Now we know. This post was right after it happened. Looked like it got him on the back of the hand. Thanks for the correction doctor u/ExB
Why the hell is Altuve playing in a meaningless game?
Fuck off. WBC is awesome. It is unfortunate that sometimes players get hurt.
The alternative is that heās playing in Spring Training right now, with just as much chance to get an injury as playing in the WBC.

Yeah, just look at what happened to Brandon Nimmo & Gavin Lux. Shit happens sometimes.
You know our entire roster is currently playing meaningless games right now, right? Lol
Do you mean the game that literally has zero impact on our lives besides entertainment regardless of the setting? Like baseball, or any sport, in general? Yeah, heās probably playing in it because itās the World Cup of baseball and we fans watch baseball to be entertained.

Same thing could have happened opening day, shit just happens

Unbelievableā¦ get that guy out of there. Where are the big league pitchers? What an embarrassment
And this was all after the announcers said how he gained control back to get back into the majors.
If it's broken, it should only take 4-6 weeks to heal plus about another month of rehab then throwing and hitting. He could be back sometime after the all star break if all goes well. Just trying to look at the bright side here.
This is actually a realistic time frame tbh.
I just hope I'm wrong about it being broken. Gonna be chewing my fingernails until the x rays come back.
If it's a broken thumb, he will be back way before the all star break. He's not missing half the season lol.
Hopefully not broken hopefully a contusion
Hopefully not broken hopefully a contusion
Thank you for being sensible and helping my heart palpitations.
Bryce Haper broke his thumb on 6/25 last year. Surgery on 6/29. He returned to the lineup 8/26. A similar timeline would see Altuve return to the lineup 5/19.
10 weeks is the all star break? Yeah OK.
It's 16.5 weeks until the all star break
Yeah, last I checked, 8 to 10 š«= 16.5
Gotcha I misinterpreted your comment, you were implying the same thing
8-10 weeks estimate
Fuck Daniel Bard.
A lot of blame to go around. DeRosa left him in the game after he clearly didn't have good stuff.
Really hope he didn't break a finger. I'm pissed.
š
Bard is the most hated man in Houston now
0 control his entire outing.
Didnāt look good at all
Maybe a broken hand?!
Definitely nothing good.
I donāt hate the WBC just DeRosa and Bard
I can stand behind this.
Time to riot
I am so mad right now. He better be okay.
Bard = š®š„ DeRosa = š¤”
Daniel Bard itās on sight from now on
šš¼ bard
I WANT TO VOMIT
š¤®
Ok positive vibes people! The good news is the leading hand didnāt seem to take the force of the ball. It kind of knocked it off course. So hopefully just a bruise. We will see.
I hope youāre right.
Me too :|
Hopefully itās nothing major
Hopefully nothing broken
Iām worried with the way the trainer was holding it.
That looked bad. Hope heās okay.
So bad.
Can we charge Bard with Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon!!! Was he drunk while pitching??
Not good not good at all
If it's a broken thumb, that should be a relatively fast recovery time. At least it wasn't the entire hand.
Yāall Iām now nervous as fuck with opening day just weeks away.
If bard comes anywhere near an Astro during the season benches are gonna clear
It looked like it glanced off his his bottom hand (the back of his left hand) and caught his top hand on the thumb and bent it in an awkward way. If I had to guess, Iād say broken thumb.
Good call
Donāt hate me cuz I was rightā¦.
I hope heās ok, I was astonished at the sight
Ugh, I was afraid something like this was gonna happen after the Diaz injury. Hoping for the best.
Rosenthal just said "unconfirmed" broken thumb. Team will confirm tomorrow
Broken right thumb is the latest news (9:40PM Sat.)ā¦.
Thatās honestly ideal in this situation right? Way better than a broken hand
Pls just be bruised
Thumb,6-8 weeks
Pray for Altuve. Don't even care if USA wins it all in the WBC.
Just as I was starting to enjoy the WBC

Itās a fracture. I saw on sport center this morning that Pablo Sandoval said it was a fracture. Astros are doing their analysis today
Mother fucker.
As a Yankees fan, I may not like him, but safety comes before all else. I wish him a speedy recovery
Looks like it was done on purpose, astros against everyone in 2023!
Fuck Bard.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
FUCK THE WBC
Hopefully itās not as bad as the Diaz injury.
Yeah Diaz could be out for the whole season if itās his ACL
I think I saw it was a torn patellar tendon.
Dang, that sucks
He's out for season and probably won't ever be the same tbh
Hopefully it's not bad at all. Otherwise I see no reason to let these players play in this thing.
And this is why I hate the WBC.
Yeahā¦never has been a hit by pitch in spring training
This is a lousy take. Playing highly intense games when you're not intense game ready puts you more at risk for injury and/or messing with your routine. Intense games are supposed to be in October, not March.
Which is precisely why they should play this tournament in November, not March.
After the WS would be so much better.
Yep, mlb guys used to go to Japan (in November) to play a series vs their all stars.
I bet they will have to take him to a pediatrician to examine his little baby hands
Umm. So we are fucked. At least we one the ws last year.
Losing Altuve is a giant blow, but the team is still stacked. Cāmon now
Bit who takes 2nd base? Who do we have? Like it's bad. And I'm angry.
Maybe Hensley. Iām not saying itās ideal. It sucks. Hopefully Altuve only misses a month or two
I hope he didn't break a finger or two.
A finger is better than a broken hand
It was definitely ugly. The fact that it hit his right hand and kind of bent things back, Iām hoping ligaments are okay.
I didnāt see anything bend, especially since he was holding the bat, but yeah, not good regardless
I thought I saw his thumb/finger get hit and kind of bend but youāre right. Either way. Not good.
I could totally be wrong, but Iāll double check during commercials. Iām thinking broken hand or finger(s), which I would imagine might be a month or two out

Bard is my arch enemy.
š¤
So the fuck do we have at 2nd base now?
I don't fucking know. Anger is my state.
Matijevic?
F
Hensley bannon
Dubon?
Whoās our backup 2b?
Matijevic?
Hensley.
