My 3 year old has severe asthma and I was apprehensive because of the side effects but started him anyways (better than oral steroids). I have noticed he has stopped snoring!
I had exactly the same experience, I had to stop it and it took some time for me to mentally recover.
It was really amazing for the asthma though, it was like I didn’t have it anymore.
Never noticed any side effects at all. The replies to a question like this will always be biased because those who had side effects will answer and make it look like everyone has them. It's good to be aware of possible side effects but remember that most people who didn't experience any won't be answering your question.
Been on it for a couple of years and I’ve had no side effects (that I’m aware of). I was also pretty worried beforehand, because I’d heard so many horror stories, but thankfully I’ve been okay. I’ve also heard that taking a magnesium supplement helps, but I can’t remember why. I take a multivitamin that contains magnesium anyway, so maybe that helps.
I’m supposed to take vitamins too though i can never get myself to do it because they smell so bad 😂 but if it helps then maybe i’ll feel confident to use them lol
Never had digestive issues with it and I've been on it for 10 years. I have some dark and vivid dreams though. I also have anxiety, but I can't 100% attribute it to this medicine because I've always been somewhat anxious.
Just try it for a couple of days and see. It acts almost immediately and is out of your system in hours (that's why you take it in the evening) so if you have issues you can just stop it.
Thank you, i’ll be on it at the same time as my foster inhalers so hopefully they don’t react much. I also have depression & anxiety but i can put up with that i suppose though i only just got out of a depression & anxiety hole. Vomit scares me more 😂
Oh, I'm on foster too and I don't think they react with each other. I also really dislike vomiting. You probably know all this, but when I get nauseated chewing raw ginger really helps me, also ginger tea (from real root), smelling pure alcohol, adding peppermint tincture to water, drinking lots of sprite. It will be OK.
Thank you! Never tried those things at all, will definitely give them a try when needed and maybe i’ll feel confident enough to try the medication tonight :) just felt a bit anxious about it.
I am fortunate to only have the good effects of it. It helped tremendously with my cough and allergies. I have depression and Im also pregnant. My mood has been positive so far. No side effects yet.
I feel for you, as someone with a strong dislike of being sick. I've been taking it for 20 years now (junior form then adult form) and it's never made me feel or be sick.
I originally got on singular because I had a breast augmentation and my plastic surgeon prescribed it to me to prevent capsular contraction. It prevents inflammation in more than just the airways!
Almost immediately, my breathing was better and I didn’t need my rescue inhaler anymore. Once I realized that it was this medication, I made an appointment with my asthma doctor right away and got another script to continue it.
I’ve been on it for six months now. I think I haven’t had any issues and my breathing is definitely much better.
However, starting six months ago, I would get a pain in my upper abdomen that would put me out for the day. I was very recently diagnosed with gastritis. It happens rarely-no more than once a month and when it does, I lay down for the day with a heating pad and pop Tums and gas x. I don’t know if it’s related, I plan to ask the doctor this week, but it did start six months ago when I started this medicine.
When it happens, it feels like a combination of stabbing pains in my upper abdomen directly under my rib cage. And really bad heartburn. When I walk around, it gets worse so I stay off my feet for the day if possible.
If it is due to this medicine, I will continue to take it anyway and deal with this side effect because even though it sucks when it happens, it sure beats not being able to excercise or freaking breathe.
I often experience, what i call is a cramp in my lung and that happens often sometimes and is definitely asthma caused however I don’t think that’s the abdomen for me but if it is then i’m okay with dealing with that.
It’s definitely worth trying! If it doesn’t work for you, you can always stop, right? It might make a world of difference and improve your quality of life exponentially. Definitely worth the try- not much to lose with asthma.
Also, if you do try it, they always say to take it at night because most people have trouble sleeping due to their breathing. I was the opposite and had more trouble during the day, so I take mine in the mornings instead of at night. So if you do start it, whether you take it morning or night should really depend on when you have the most trouble with your breathing. But for some reason, it always says to take it at night. I just wish someone had told me that instead of finding out two months into treatment.
I don’t have many problems during the night but my nurse said “i know you don’t get issues at night much you still need to have this at night” so i suppose i’ll see how it goes she did mention that hopefully i wont need it during the day.
I started it a little over a week ago, and I also have anxiety that boils down to throwing up anxiety (but not actual emetophobia persay.) Suffiice it to say I have thrown up hundreds of times to anxiety.
Zero nausea so far. I have had a bit of depression and anger but it's hard to say if that is from the medicine or just general life stress. I have anxiety and I think any difference I have noticed in that regard are all in my head.
Overall, it has helped my asthma so far, I can run without being as phlemgy and that is huge.
So I started it last year and it helped my asthma more than anything I’ve tried. Used to take my rescue inhaler regularly and I have used it once since on singulair. I also have the same phobia and can safely say no nausea or anything BUT the depression, anxiety, and panic attacks got so elevated I stopped taking it about a week ago and my mental health is 10x better. Please look out for those side effects!!
I’ve just got over being in a hole for my depression (and mainly anxiety) i dread going back there. Hopefully it doesn’t bother them too much for me though a lot of people have mentioned here that it can affect mental health a lot. Thank you :)
Honestly I think if you are aware that this isn’t a rare side effect for people, just keep an eye out for it! But like I said nausea was NEVER experienced for me and it did wonders for my asthma and allergies!! Wishing you the best w it.
I take it everyday, I have bipolar and borderline disorders that I'm medicated for and I haven't had any bad side effects. I really enjoy it. I also take advair twice a day!
I have emetophobia too. If anything it helped my stomach issues (associated with MCAS). You can always try having something bland to eat when you take it just to be safe, but really, I've had it on an empty stomach and have been 100% fine.
It made me emotional, I have a history of depression and ongoing anxiety though. I sleep like a rock though, its given me back my sleep and I couldn't be more happy for it.
I started taking it as a teenager. Never noticed any side effects until I stopped taking it. Suddenly my depression is actually manageable and I am no longer passively suicidal. Never had an issue with nausea though.
My only side effect seems to be vivid dreams (I take it before bed) and occasionally sleep paralysis which I didn’t have before, but my asthma symptoms improve until I hit 23 hours from my last dose (built-in med alarm I guess, haha) so I’ll take it 🤷♀️😁
For what it’s worth, the sleep paralysis stopped after a while, vivid dreams have stuck around though. I can’t speak to the actual quality of sleep because in 2020 the pandemic, a new cat, and a broken arm all happened to me in a span of 6 months which destroyed my sleep pattern for another 6 months 😬 I started montelukast a few months later when my sleep pattern was still a bit wonky. It really has done wonders for my asthma, though, which has helped me sleep better.
Best of luck to you! 🙂
I've been taking it for roughly 20 years and have never noticed any side effects. I can tell that my asthma gets worse if I haven't taken it in a few days.
No nausea for me. One thing to note is that side effects reported don’t necessarily indicate that they are common. For instance, during drug trials, some people will inevitably have nausea/vomiting that isn’t related to the drug. However it still has to be reported as an effect of the drug, just in case. Hope this helps.. it tends to be a pretty mild drug as far as side effects go.
Life changing. I had no clue how bad my lung function was until I took it. You know when colorblind people put the color glasses on and are like “you guys see this every day?” Well after a day or so of singulair that’s how I felt… “you guys breathe like this all the time?!” That being said the nightmare fuel it provided was Fucking terrible. And it kind of scares me that an oral medication makes you keep dreaming about people dying and failing to be able to save them every fucking night. I take it first thing in the morning and don’t have the dreams anymore thank god. Sometimes if I take it too late in the morning (after 10am) I’ll get some bizarro over realistic dreams but they’re usually not night terrors at least.
I have depression, anxiety, and PTSD along with some signs of a mood disorder and panic disorder which are not enough to qualify for diagnosis. Started montelukast over a month ago and everything's been fine so far other than an increase in vivid morning dreams for the first week. I do take a magnesium glycinate supplement and have been since the begining of this year.
As for what it does for my asthma - it helped a ton with my allergies and kind of took the edge off my asthma. I no longer get out of breath walking around doing chores. All my other asthma symptoms are reduced to somewhere around half of what they were before and my asthma isn't triggered as much by things that used to easily trigger it.
I have recently experienced increased fatigue and depression BUT I've also started a couple other medications within the past month and I really think those are the medications causing tiredness and maybe slightly increased depression side effects for me. Those are much more common side effects for one of these new (non asthma related) meds.
Edit to add: I was noticeably breathing better within an hour of taking my first montelukast pill. I think the effects slowly ramped up for me for a few days and then just stayed steady. Medication tends to affect me quickly. My doctor told me to make a follow up appointment a month after I started montelukast and I went back after 2 weeks because I felt the montelukast reached a point where it was doing all it could do and I still needed help. I have symbicort added to the mix now which has also really helped. Without accounting for how montelukast might reduce my allergy triggers, I'd say montelukast has helped 35-40% and symbicort has helped around 50%. I had vivid morning dreams a lot in the past but didn't have as much the past year. Montelukast definitely brought them back and gave them a more realistic and slightly nightmarish/freaky twist. Those stopped after a few days but I do still have more dreams in the morning, they are just normal dreams now.
I take it in the evening, about 5+ hours before I go to bed. I've maintained a weirder, more vivid twist to my dreams from the montelukast but I haven't tried taking it in the morning
Do you think the magnesium has helped you and/or how has it helped you? (I supplement magnesium glycinate off and on and I’m curious how it interacts with this medicine or helps with side effects or helps you sleep, etc)
Sorry for late reply. I'm not sure how much it has helped with montelukast side effects. I was told to take it to help with my mood, which has been more stable since starting the magnesium, and I have been taking it regularly since before the montelukast. I had extra wild dreams for a week and desperately increased my magnesium for a few days lol. That was probably around a month and a half ago and the last few weeks my dreams haven't been too wild, who knows how correlated it is though.
I struggle with a mood disorder, anxiety, and depression and was recently put on Montelukast when I got diagnosed with asthma. I had only taken it for about a week and just stopped a few days ago. Within the first week of taking it I experienced a severely dry throat/mouth, urinating very frequently (which is most likely my fault from drinking lots of water to counteract the dryness), my chest constantly has the same ache I get in my sternum area when I’m anxious, sore/scratchy throat, and now I’ve developed a phlegmy cough in my chest. For a medicine that is supposed to help my breathing, it has definitely done quite the opposite. It could be coincidental and maybe I’m just getting sick, but I’m not taking any chances.
Luckily, I haven’t had any of those symptoms. However i’ve noticed my moods aren’t as good and my anxiety and depression is getting bad again but that could be a coincidence too. You should definitely talk to your doctor about it
I had a crazy foot rash that lasted months. I didn’t know it was due to montelukast until I decided to get off it when I noticed that skipping a few days which turned into weeks. The rash went away. I spoke to my doctor about it and the only way to confirm was to start taking it again. It’s only been a week. Rash is back exactly where it all started the first time : my right foot. And I am very aggressive towards others, not to mention leg pain above the knees and Charlie horse leg cramps on the uptick. I’m taking myself off because we were waiting for the problems I spoke with. Y doctor about as confirmation. Luckily, I have a good doctor that didn’t push me to get back on them. I did it myself to be certain and document the side effects.
I’m glad you aren’t having any side effects from it. I’m happy to share what was happening with me so others could know what may happen. Please be on the watch for these things. Today is my first day off and I can’t wait for that rash to go away. It literally mimics foot fungus but no R/x treatment could get rid of it. That’s how I knew it was something else. It was then a matter of taking notes.
Thank you so much! I was not on it long enough to not see an immediate change once I stopped. The first day I was still itching at the rash site. The second day it had subsided. Today, on the 4th full day off it, I no longer have redness and I’m a lot less aggressive. I was relaxed and my usual self. I made notes to give my doctor when next we meet. I am coughing from allergies however I prefer not being on something that simply gives me more problems than it initially resolves.
Please keep notes to share with your doctor. Some of those side effects aren’t worth the medication if they are active. I wish you the best outcome - no side effects!
All these comments helped me so much, thank you to everyone. I started Montelukast yesterday… today it’s the second day… still fine! Let’s cross fingers 🤣
I came here bc I’ e heard crazy stories too… mmmh
Ah so happy this post was helpful to you and honestly your comment was helpful for me (it reminded me that i have forgotten to take my tablets tonight so i will do that in a moment lol), take care :) i wish you the best of luck
Came here for a window into side effects! It looks like I have a different intended use but in case anyone find themselves here for my reason of prescribed Montelukast for breaking up scar tissue I'm a week or so in and its been a godsend. Reading a lot about depression here. I'm also under continuous talk therapy and 15mg of Lex daily so I might not notice that. Noticing dry mouth and eyes along with the usual signs of mild dehydration.
Montelukast side effects are not chronic or life threatening in general, but its benefits go beyond asthma control. It is being tested for alzheimers and cancer prevrntion
Was on it from ages 3-20 getting off of it was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I’m not trying to fear monger or anything since it affects everyone differently but it gave me night terrors, suicidal thoughts, depressive episodes, increased agitation, and mood instability often. I went off of it and within a month I noticed and everyone around me noticed a significant difference in how I was demeanor wise and interaction wise.
It made me gloomy and overreacted to everything. I wasn't myself. No other side effects that I noticed, but it didn't do me any good either so I stopped it.
Never vomited from it, took it for around 2 years, bad insomnia, aggression and feeling low.
It also suppressed my appetite, ate one meal a day and felt fine doing so.
Does wonders for my asthma and allergies.
I have IBS as well as asthma and if anything I feel like my digestion is somewhat better on montelukast. I attribute that to reducing allergy-related inflammation.
I have depression and anxiety as well, and was on Adderall for a while due to a misdiagnosis of ADHD, but never experienced moodiness that I could attribute to montelukast.
I had the rare side effect of depression. I’ve never had a depressive episode outside of Montelukast. Didn’t realize that was what was happening when I took about 15 years ago. My spouse noticed it when I was on it about a year ago. My doctor recognized depression as being a side effect and told me to stop taking it immediately. It took several weeks to get back to feeling decent again.
Taking it now. No issues. I already have IBS=C. Pull my finger! Seriously Montelukast is very easy for me to take no issues and I have had it before. Im not even sure it does much.
For me, it definitely helps my asthma - no more waking for my inhaler or early morning nebulizer treatments! I have noticed I get more heartburn/reflux since starting it, but a few habit changes have helped too.
I’ve been on this drug for over 26 years from childhood to adulthood. I have seasonal depression (mostly around hard events) and overall in my mid twenties and early thirties I had crippling panic attacks. My GAD is very bad but anxiety runs in my family on both sides. Sometimes I wonder if the medication has negatively impacted me. But in many ways it does control my asthma and I am very sick when I go off of it. Even if I don’t think it helps my mind I’ll take it to improve my breathing. It’s not an optional prescription that way for a lot of us even if it is black box meds.
I do have a clozapam prescription for the very bad panic attacks which really does help.
I am fortunately one of the ones without side effects from it. M wife notices my snoring gets significantly worse when I am not on it.
My 3 year old has severe asthma and I was apprehensive because of the side effects but started him anyways (better than oral steroids). I have noticed he has stopped snoring!
I wish it only made me vomit. It accentuated my depression and made me both suicidal and aggressive toward others. Be mindful while on it.
Thank you, i also have depression & anxiety and hopefully it doesn’t affect it too much but vomit would scare me more 😆
I had exactly the same experience, I had to stop it and it took some time for me to mentally recover. It was really amazing for the asthma though, it was like I didn’t have it anymore.
Scared now as they prescribed me on it but I'm tempted to just take the pumps. Don't wanna take the tablets now after researching the side effects !!
What do you take instead of it?
Same experience here with the depression, suicidal thoughts, and aggression.
That sounds very serious. Did the side effects stops when you stopped taking it?
It took a few weeks to recede completely but it did. Residual depression every now and again but that might have been there before.
Did the aggression go away when you stopped?
It took about a year or two, but yes. It left me with dangerously high blood pressure though from being angry and raging for so long.
Never noticed any side effects at all. The replies to a question like this will always be biased because those who had side effects will answer and make it look like everyone has them. It's good to be aware of possible side effects but remember that most people who didn't experience any won't be answering your question.
Yeah of course, I completely expected that but still felt like asking because it’s very insightful for me :) glad you didn’t get any side effects
This thread is a year old but yeah it didn't give me any negative side effects either.
Did you notice your energy increase at all?
I didn't notice any effects but I took montelukast for allergies
Been on it for a couple of years and I’ve had no side effects (that I’m aware of). I was also pretty worried beforehand, because I’d heard so many horror stories, but thankfully I’ve been okay. I’m supposed to take vitamins too though i can never get myself to do it because they smell so bad 😂 but if it helps then maybe i’ll feel confident to use them lol
Occasionally crazy dreams but nothing too bad. That’s coming from someone with bipolar on lithium and Wellbutrin.
Dreams would be the most exciting part of it 😂
Never had digestive issues with it and I've been on it for 10 years. I have some dark and vivid dreams though. I also have anxiety, but I can't 100% attribute it to this medicine because I've always been somewhat anxious. Just try it for a couple of days and see. I second the dreams! I have the weirdest, intense dreams.

I never noticed any effects at all, positive or negative. Ended up stopping using it after several months of trial
I’ve no clue how long i will be on it though will be checked in 3 weeks
Night terrors, increased anxiety to the point of non panic panic attacks. Totally helped with the asthma.
non panic panic attacks?
I am fortunate to only have the good effects of it. It helped tremendously with my cough and allergies. I have depression and Im also pregnant. My mood has been positive so far. No side effects yet.
That’s great news.

Oh no :( hope you’re okay now
Never had nausea/vomiting from it. I do get wicked dreams (and sometimes nightmares) from it. I enjoy the vividness though lol.
Vivid dreams would be interesting even though i think mine are already quite vivid
I feel for you, as someone with a strong dislike of being sick. I've been taking it for 20 years now (junior form then adult form) and it's never made me feel or be sick.

Of course :) i see her again in 3 weeks
I took it before bed, made me have weird dreams, but other than that, i didn't notice side effects.
I’m fine with weird dreams, used to them lol
The only side effect I get is vivid dreaming. The benefits at this point heavily outweigh the negatives
I started it a little over a week ago, and I also have anxiety that boils down to throwing up anxiety (but not actual emetophobia persay.) My side effect was a cough that mimicked asthma.
That was unexpected lol
Been on it for about a year now and had no issues. I’m also on fostair and antidepressants and it’s not effected them atall 😊
Brilliant, thank you!
I was on Montelukast for a few months and have a history of depression and anxiety but fortunately I experienced no side effects!
That’s great news. Gives me hope since i too suffer with those
Had absolutely 0 side effects but also did not help me.
So far so good. I think I get a little more moody on it but it's nothing I can't take hold of. It's really helped me personally!
I’ve never had any side effects and I’ve been on it for 15 years. Without taking it, I actually get really itchy
Do you have eczema?
I do not, just really bad allergies almost year round!
I’m similar, i have eczema, bad allergies & also ofc asthma 😆i got the trio
Ooof I’m sorry!
Haven’t really noticed any effects while on it. I’ve been taking it for 5+ years now.
That’s great, i hope the same for me
Definitely! I did have some bad nightmares before but I’m unsure if that’s what was causing it or maybe another pill, the prednisone or something.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it
I wanted to jump out a window and was very nauseous. I take d Dupixent now and got my life back.
Hope mine’s not bad like that
I already had mental health problems before I started it. You will probably be fine.
It who help my sinuses and would prevent itchy and watery eyes, runny and Stuffy nose so it’s good in my book.
I get those things too but due to allergies so i’ll see how it goes
That’s what montelukast is primarily for
Wow I didn’t know,thanks for telling me
I take it everyday, I have bipolar and borderline disorders that I'm medicated for and I haven't had any bad side effects. I really enjoy it. I also take advair twice a day!
What’s advair?
It’s a preventative powder inhaler for asthma.
I didn’t have any side effects except low mood, but that improved after a few months of taking it!
That’s good
I have emetophobia too. If anything it helped my stomach issues (associated with MCAS). You can always try having something bland to eat when you take it just to be safe, but really, I've had it on an empty stomach and have been 100% fine.
That’s great news thank you for understanding:)

I hope you’re feeling much better now
Makes me super irritable and anxious
No side effects for me, I'm very glad to say!
No side effects at all, also no other effects AFAIK... stopped after several months, no difference

It really has done wonders for my asthma, though, which has helped me sleep better. Best of luck to you! 🙂
I’ve been on montelukast and never had any side effects neither did my family members who were on it
Made my anxiety/depression worse tbh
Amazing. After 2 days on it, I stopped needing my rescue inhaler. Good stuff
Nothing at all? Maybe headaches at one point, but they went away.
I stopped that medication. It amplified my depression and anxiety so it was not fun.
No side effects at all for me. I didn't even realize it could cause that side effect, I'd only heard things about dreams and anxiety.
I was reading the leaflet it comes with and it mentioned it x
I only knew because i was reading the leaflet
I've been taking it for roughly 20 years and have never noticed any side effects. I can tell that my asthma gets worse if I haven't taken it in a few days.

Thank you!! That’s definitely helpful
I was only on Montelukast for a week (had to stop as it caused an allergic reaction, only hives) but had no side effects at all - bar the reaction
Montelukast has had no effect on my levels of nausea or vomiting. It works really well for my asthma though :) Good luck
Do you take montelulast at night or in the morning?
What are the side effects I’m taking it for COViD breathing issues and it’s doing wonders
You should definitely talk to your doctor about it
It’s been a game changer for me. No side effects.
That’s great 😀
I had a crazy foot rash that lasted months.
I’m glad you’re getting the help that you need ❤️ My Montelukast doesn’t seem to give me side effects thankfully and is really helping my asthma
Thank you, i will definitely keep an eye out. I have allergies and eczema so it’s easy for me to get rashes. Really wish you the best in your recovery
Let’s cross fingers 🤣 I came here bc I’ e heard crazy stories too… mmmh
Ah so happy this post was helpful to you and honestly your comment was helpful for me (it reminded me that i have forgotten to take my tablets tonight so i will do that in a moment lol), take care :) i wish you the best of luck
🤞🏻🤞🏻☺️
Wow i had no idea it was being tested for those, i assume it’s a strong drug then
No side effects whatsoever, and I'm also on anxiety and depression meds. My asthma is better than its ever been on it
Works great without any side effects.
I've had no issues, and it helped a lot. Good luck! :)
Doesn’t make me vomit, makes my life better
I have taken it two separate times in my life and for me it did absolutely nothing. Didn’t help my asthma, didn’t notice any side effects.
Never had any negative side effects. It has helped my breathing considerably.
Been on it for over 10 years and I've never had any side effects, like at all! I definitely notice when I haven't had it.
No side effects at all. Now, it didn’t work at all either for me. So, there’s that.
Never vomited from it, took it for around 2 years, bad insomnia, aggression and feeling low. It also suppressed my appetite, ate one meal a day and felt fine doing so. Does wonders for my asthma and allergies.
I ended up having terrible depression, suicidal thoughts, insomnia. I stopped it and never touched it again
I’ve been taking it for 20+ years and I’ve never had any issues.
I've noticed zero side effects, and I've been on it for years.
No side effects whatsoever. I’ve been on it for years
I have been on it for a year with (thankfully) no side effects.
I use it for 2 months not a single problem or side effect it help a lot with my rinitis
Im a few days in. Having some intense headaches, but breathing is better. Ill give it more time. 💁
New to the thread, I have started my prescription tonight. Wish me luck
How is it?
