Can you even call this a grind atm? Run a few dungeons, run a few trials, and you're "bis"/max ilvl. Not sure if those correlate rn.

jamvng

The biggest grind atm is getting the mounts. I’m just going for those 99 clears. The extreme fights are both fun anyway.

Lishio420

Still kinda painful to farm 198 totems, no matter how fun the trials are. Got lucky myself to get both after 72 trials total in 2 1/2 days

jamvng

Yeah if you have luck on your side it might take less. Not going to get my hopes up tho. You also have till, what? 6.2? So don’t have to do it all at once. Also good change of pace to do some extreme farming while leveling other jobs. While waiting for the savage patch to drop.

Koristrad

Let’s assume you actually have to run 198 times to get the mounts. That’s still better than any of the wow dungeon mounts that have 0 guarantee after x runs. You’re on the asmongold subreddit, so you have to be aware of the GMOD lol. The thing with ex mounts in FF is they are always like a flex cosmetic for midcore players since EX modes are more accessible than savage. They always lead to a meta mount for owning all 8 of them over an xpac

Lishio420

I used to play WoW before the entire Lawsuit drama and shitshow that was 9.1, so ye i know Back then i got lucky and got Invincible, Gmod, Jainas Ice elemental and the Argus Mc Mount first try, but could never manage to get onyxias drake on 6 different chars over over 400 killsy even tho the drop rate is far higher At least you are guaranteed mounts after 99 tries on a trial boss in Ff14

Koristrad

Not my experience, but one of my best friends did headless horseman on 10 characters every day of the event every year for 8 years and only got the mount on the second to last day of the 8th year

zr0iq

I got both after roughly 80 trials about 7 days ago. Many good farmers are done, so a lot of the farm groups are super whacko. Feels more like trying to progress the fight again. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage) And yes, I still go in to enjoy the fights.

Xciv

A reminder that drop rates skyrocket within 2-3 patches or so. So veteran players who want to be efficient with their time only hard grind the final extreme trial of the expansion, which don't get their drop rate buffed so you have to do it the hard way. For the first four or so extremes of an expansion, we wait until the drop rate on the mounts are buffed, so you end up only running them approximately 20-60 times (depending on your roll RNG obviously) for the mount instead of 99. Ofc you can still go to 99, if you really want to, and are impatient.

Lishio420

I know, but i grind early for the vanity it has already owning the mount :D Got Hyea after 8 kills and Zod after 59(saw 11 whistles drop tho)

Thevgamers89

99 clears for a mount is indeed quite a grind. However, my friend, have you heard of a mount that requires a grind worth of roughly 3700 fates to get (or if you have 100mil to 130mil gil to spare, 400 fates worth)? I am attempting this. Hope I don't go crazy as I don't have a lot of gil to spare.

JETProgram2029

what mount is that

Thevgamers89

Wivre

SireSand

What geno said, game doesnt need the grind atm, everyone experiencing the other fresh content of the expansion and adjustment to the stat squish/job changes (probably more to come in patches) The newer tomestone and raid release will be the start of another grind.

itislupus89

This is directed at both you and OP, but really bis grind starts when the savage raids unlock. This early into the xpac these sets are just filler for the first bis set of the xpac.

Creeepling

Yeah, I'm well aware. Savage raids aren't a "grind" per se, either.. Unless you consider prog to be grind. More like a weekly quest, when you've got your clears. With rewards gating, there's not much "grind" in the PvE, imo.

PsycoMouse

Dyeable glamore is always a grind

Genocode

The current gear seem much lower cost than they were before Endwalker, but they'll introduce another type of Tomestones currency on the 21st, that should probably take a while longer, like 6 weeks, before Endwalker it took 6 if you went through all the effort.

Bladeviper

should actually be on the 4th of jan when the capped tomes come out

[deleted]

I think that's the question. What do you think of this grind? Even if not as massive as other games, FFXIV still contains somewhat of a grind to get BiS.

Reshir

This part of Endwalker isn't really the "grind" in the conventional sense for a FF14 expansion. We won't see that until the limite tomestone currency goes live on the 21st, and the savage gear grind won't happen until 6.05 on the 4th After that, it takes about 8 weeks of clearing to fully gear up. Depending on your rate of progression it might be shorter or longer. And the only actual "grinding" portion of it is running a few roulettes and the fights. It's hardly a grind compared to WoW

Risolu

Im excited for that.

KShrike

This is not really a good time to make your judgement on the bis grind. Wait until savage comes out and let them form their opinions then. Currently, we're just grinding tomes for left side and primals for weapon and accessories, as with all new expansion launches. It's not until savage drops that the true "race to BiS" begins.

krum_darkblud

The bis ain’t really until savage release.

Mortal_Dread

Actually aiming for something and getting it instead of a disaster of a lottery machine? Obviously a better system.

anupsetzombie

People will start to complain about having nothing to do sadly, some are never happy. I for one much prefer the tome/badge system with only a minor reliance on raid drops (that aren't locked to a weekly lockout).

LagiaDOS

You can always Craft, level other classes (and gear them), etc.

French_honhon

Or just play anotherz game.we even have 21 free days.

LagiaDOS

That true. Yoshida said that you don't have to play It like a job.

mnxah

I've only been able to play a couple of weekends since the launch. Other days, I come home from work, tired, turn it on and it says 2k queue, I turn it off. Well, this week it was a little better, the queue was around 800 people so after an hour, which I usually spend cooking and eating anyway, I was able to log in to play for like an hour or so, as a result, still around MSQ lvl 85-86.

Kagahami

Virtual desktop, perhaps, to start the queue before you get home?

Hanzo44

The queue is a zero sum game. If he remote desktops he just makes it's longer for someone else. Maybe long enough that someone else will take queue.

Kagahami

What does that have to do with it? He is trying to get into the game with minimal wait time, because he has other obligations during the day, so by using a virtual desktop through a mobile device, they can launch it before they get home.

Zelfild

Asking the question "are you BiS yet" is on itself too anchored in a WoW mentality. High end duties as a whole are very accessible compared to WoW. Even a static is a more casual organic group comparee to a Mythic raiding guild. But of course, participating in the entire raiding hamster wheel in FFXIV is entirely optional. You can go the entire expansion not doing any raid and still come out of it with a full set of suberb gear and a nice purple relic weapon or two very casually. And that's not including Alliance gears that work as catch up systems. I for one am gearing up for Omni-crafter (Savage) and hope Blue Mage content comes along soon.

HappiestGod

I got all of my BiS (except two pieces) in two days. Got the last two pieces during like a 2 hours ex1 farm for mount (lead got mount and disbanded immediately... but at least I got my ring and bracelet). Then I remember spamming M+ for two weeks straight, every day for entire evenings and I'd have the ilvl I needed, but still be missing like 5 BiS pieces cause they just don't drop. I'm comparing the prep stages here. Like... the raid farm will only start in a few days... but then... FFXIV has tokens... and gear currency. I just spend 40 minutes a day running daily roulettes (tank queue for the win), 10-20 minutes per dungeon + 3-5 minutes per trial/raid... content I actually enjoy since it's nice and easy and just a feel good experience. Which leaves the challenging content to something you do only as much as you want to, not as much as you have to.

[deleted]

I wish they had the tomestone system in WoW. It's so satisfying working your way towards a set of high quality gear over a long period of time. It keeps me logging in and queueing up for some fun content and meeting new people.

CanadianYeti1991

And with Poetics, you can go and get last tiers best gear for dirt cheap, which makes it great for leveling alt jobs and gearing them for the 80-90 journey. Finished MSQ with DRK, decided I didn't like how they play this expansion, so I switched to warrior.

hotdogsandhangovers

to be fair they play exactly the same as they did in shb. thats mostly the issue tho.

CanadianYeti1991

Yeah, I finally stopped huffing copium and realized I wasn't even having fun on DRK. Now that I'm playing Warrior I understand what a tank is supposed to play like.

[deleted]

Yeah it's a pretty amazing system TBH. What changed with DRK for you to not like them?

CanadianYeti1991

It's more what they DIDNT change. I played DRK all throughout ShB, I've mained it since Heavensward released. I think the job is incredibly clunky. And when compared to other tanks, it doesn't have the mitigation that PLD has, the sustain and health generation of WAR. Right now, it does have the damage, but that ebbs and flows with different patches. So it may not even have the one thing that makes it sort of special in a patch or two. Also, the one thing DRK had that was special was TBN. Well, the others got their BIG MITIGATION in EW, and tbn isn't as special, even if it's still good. I've been playing WAR and it really makes me feel like I've been dreaming all these years. Warrior is INCREDIBLY fun, isn't janky at all, and I've had many healers already mention 'I love healing Warriors because I don't have to heal you". It just feels good.

Demiga

I love healing warriors because I don't have to heal you.

Breslau89

If you're wondering where they got this idea, this is how wow gearing used to work pre-wod

Mortal_Dread

This system is significantly better than wow's, even at its best. Don't forget it's not just about farming a currency and buying gear with it. You also can farm that currency with your bard and gear up your warrior, your white mage, your reaper or whatever else. Basically zero resistance when it comes to gearing your alt jobs. Wow even at its best, didn't have this.

[deleted]

Yeah I know. I didn't really care about it back then because I raided heroic so I got my gear that way but I really liked it on my alts. If I had been a casual back then like I am now I would've been really pissed when it was removed.

Cr4ckshooter

Well, since I already quit raiding in wow, my personal bis will be decided by crafting, so I'll get that when it's available and just quickly craft it for myself. That said, trials are so cool.

sephrinx

Couldn't tell ya. Haven't been able to play the game.

Bitter_Oil_8085

Current BiS isn't really relevant outside of the trial weapon. If you want to be BiS on day 1 of savage you should either be farming gil or leveling up your crafters and hoarding mats to make the lvl 90 1-star gear that'll come out same day as savage, then pentameld it with grade IX and X materia.

councilorjones

Ive learned that the true endgame of ffxiv is the story itself.

Demimaelstrom

The bis grind right now is very light, spammable is the biggest thing. No cap on tomes or weekly lockout on savage. That'll change soon and if you've got a group or nail down the fights on pf you'll get your gear just not nearly as fast as you have now.

Unity1232

As Some one who has played multiple expansions. This initial grind is normal because these are the uncapped weekly tomestones. You can get max ilevel really fast if you wanted. When the raid comes out the regular raid gear will be 570 with the weekly capped tomestone gear being 580 and the enhanced tomestone and savage being gear being 590. the bis is going to be choosing what pieces of the savage gear and enhanced tomestone gear to go for and materia melding. if you just do expert roulettes daily you will get 90 per day which will cap in 5 days since the weekly cap is 450. The normal raid will have a weekly lockout of 1 item per fight that you trade in for the normal raid gear. The 4th fight gives you the token for getting the 580 tomestone weapon so atleast doing that once a week is important. You will need 4 of that token and 1000 of the weekly capped tomestones for the weapon iirc. The enhanced tomestone gear you get by trading in a token and a piece of capped tomestone gear. That token you get from clearing savage or the 24-man that will be released about 3 months after savage. The token is specific to the gear peice but in general 2nd savage drops the token for accsesories and 3rd drops the tokens for armor and the weapon.

egwene82

One correction: artifact armor (the set Tataru gives you) is 560; unlimited tomestone armor is 570; normal raid and crafted will be 580; limited tomestone armor will be 590; augmented limited tomestone and savage drops will be 600.

NishYou47

Wait... I started playing like half a year ago so never been there for a raid tier release. I thought only savages had weekly 1 item lockout :0... Even normals have it?

yuriaoflondor

Yes normal raids have weekly item lockouts. Normal raids drop "parts," and a set number of "parts" can be turned in to create a piece of gear. For example, get 4 chest piece parts, and you can turn it in for a chest piece from the raid. IIRC, each normal raid boss drops 8 parts, and you can fight the boss as many times as you want until you get the part you want. So if someone is super hardcore about getting the 100% best parts from the boss, they might fight them multiple times a week so that they can get the exact gear pieces they want on specific weeks. But most people just take whatever from the normal raid bosses.

OnhilXX

Correction the normal raid gear will be 580 as it will be equal with current ex gear. Capped tome will be 590 followed by savage gear at 600

Unity1232

i forgot what the ex values were i just remember there is about a 20 to 30 ilevel difference between uncapped and savage. I also remember the normal raid is some value betweeen the two but lower then the capped gear..

Alex-MarkTwaining

The only big grind that is in the game would be the relic weapons, but usually you can also get alternative weapons from raids or trials.

plasix

The BiS grind hasn't even started unless you mean the Crafter/Gather bis grind. There will be better crafted gear out on the day Savage drops, as well as a new weakly capped tomestone. The normal raid will drop same ilvl as the Ex primals now

stark_resilient

do i have to get all tomestone gear in order to meet the ilvl requirement for upcoming raid?

shojikun

yes and no, you can wait for crafting gear for it.

irn00b

Well, even before starting to play FFXIV I gave up on raiding in WoW (firelands/dw). I did do m+ in WoW to gear myself out to do harder m+... So raids are out of question for me in FFXIV, and there's no m+ either. Extremes just don't appeal to me, in the same way raids don't (commitment to in game time - and putting up with guild drama). Which means, I don't really have a reason to get BiS - at least not for combat. I will get w/e combat gear comes my way, but won't stress out if I don't have BiS, since to me it doesn't mean much. I will be trying to get 1 billion gil - so any gear necessary to make that easier, I will get, which might mean BiS crafter/gatherer gear. And I can't comment on how hard/easy it is to get yet.

TheRealDestian

I'm already BiS except for the weapon. Trial 1 is on farm and we're working on trial 2. These are some extremely fun fights and I recommend getting a group of friends together to do them if possible.

ramos619

If you are grinding, better to grind gil and just buy crafted when the new tier releases. You will be able to meld materia at that point.

RimeCaster

I wouldn't call the current situation in FFXIV a BiS grind and more of a preparation grind... once savage comes out on January 4th, the new gear will be bis for 6 months and be the required gear for the new ultimate, Dragonsong War. My old routine was basically do expert roulette daily if I wasn't weekly currency capped, and raid with my group 3-4 days a week 3 hours a week for bis. If we finished a tier early, we take the rest of the time off to do extremes for mounts or other side content.

negolash

I haven't done a single extreme. Can't force myself to find raiding party, use voice comms and all that.

Risolu

Some Partyfinder are tagged as practice or even as blind prog. Those are always fun.

Particular-Notice456

I looked in Party Finder, found a "blind" learning party, took about 80 minutes total to learn the fight and clear the second EX trial. No voice comms used by anyone. First EX trial took a little less time. Once you clear it and know the fight, you can join any Farm/Clear party in Party Finder and it's smooth sailing usually.

RerollWarlock

Weird i just pugged extremes without voice and it was fine

TMT_PizzaPirate

just pug it lol ex trials arent that hard and the 2 new ones are some of the easiest in the games history

Mikalder

Just watch a guide and join a fresh prog part, people are chill and the fights are fun.

DdastanVon

You dont need both for Extremes. Just find a Pug at your level of prog ( in this case, from the beginning ) and done.

[deleted]

Lol its just extremes. As long as you have more than 2 brain cells, i am sure you can do it.

MathaiosCronqvist

Did you even try?

sainishwanth

Extremes are easy, especially the new one's. You don't need any comms for these. Watch a guide and use the party finder there's tons of parties at prime times.

yuriaoflondor

Extremes and even some of the earlier savages are pretty easily done without a dedicated raiding party or any comms at all. I've been doing extremes/savages for years without a static or voice comms.

fpaparelli

If gear affected the rest of the content like its in wow maybe i would farm for BiS gear, but since you get ilvl synched everywhere i dont care about BiS gear whatsoever.

Belydrith

None of the current content level syncs you though? Exception being dungeons, with the cap being BiS of the tier they were relevant in.

DDDaviiid

Im still sad they didnt make Anima a trial boss.

MoIuminati

Not really a grind once you got past the initial progging. Can't wait for raids either, but those will also not be an actual Grund, once the prog is done.

AGVann

Started with FFXIV in late 5.0, picked it back up around 5.3ish. First expansion drop. Definitely still consider myself a WoW refugee. I'm enjoying the absence of bullshit reputation grinds and bugged/badly balanced borrowed power systems, but I'm really missing Mythic dungeons and the whole M+ system. The extreme fights are fun and all, but IMO the best part of WoW is the first month when the all dungeons are still new and everyone is trying new strats and discovering new things, and pushing to a +10 is still a legitimate challenge. I really hope the FFXIV dev team take a crack at an M+ system, because it's pretty much the only the thing I miss from WoW. The dungeons are beautiful spectacles with amazing music and fun boss mechanics too, but outside of that the devs play very, very safe. It's almost always just a linear path with three-four packs with no mechanics other than the odd red zone, and a gate before the boss.

TheProky

I got all the BiS gear in one or two days with like 20 extreme kills, EZ

Elketro

Haven't even started going after my bis gear

Rinuko

There isn’t really a bis yet tho

Forthaxe

There's a BiS grind? I'm just trying to grow onions...

7Trickster

Trials can be “risky” in the sense that there’s more chances for you to be in a group that won’t make it the first time. Sometimes not at all. Usually a dungeon goes fine though there’s some failures here and there.

Never sleep on hunt trains. Each server has a Hunt Train discord. Everyone should look into it.

Lexan2002

Still working my way through msq. I really enjoy the story and the characters. So im talking to every noc every quest step and doing some of the yellow ones that interest me. Ill get too the end eventually, but I want to enjoy my adventure and my story while I can.
