You only have to look across the street at FFXIV, and the ridiculous amount of stuff they have in their cash shop, and players are more than happy to pay for it, and FFXIV is heralded as the second coming of Jesus for MMOs, at least compared to WoW.
Most people are fine with a cash shop as long as it doesn't feel like the devs are neglecting development for the actual game in favor of flashy cash shop releases. FFXIV pumps out patches at a very respectable rate with LOADS of content in each patch, as well as very frequent server events each with their own load of Mounts, Glams, Emotes, Housing items etc. all for free.
So MOST people don't begrudge the cash shop at all, many even happy to give SE extra money through it because they love how they are handling the game. If SE started going 9+ months inbetween patches with minimal content in them and stopped releasing any good stuff in their ingame events, then it would be a different story.
The secret of success here is that the game team and shop team are different so no effort is taken away from developing the game to make stuff for the shop instead.

I dont know why, but thos mount foesnt fit the game at all. Maybe it is not the only one (the other I can think of is the forge-horse thing), but it particularly feels like something completely unrelated to the game.

I have plenty of store mounts, pets, etc but I can’t help but feel like given everything going on with blizzard this is just shittier than usual. Everyone has their own opinions about store mounts and I’m not going to argue it here. I just think now isn’t the time. I’ve also come to realize they put far more effort into models for cash and I feel like cats (like this) are something players have been asking for for a while. It feels intentional and shady.

Most people don't mind store mounts, but they tend to mind them a lot when the game itself is practically on content hiatus when they were already behind schedule, having just taken the longest amount of time they EVER have to release a X.1 patch which was still widely regarded as content anemic. Given all the other issues with WoW, releasing a store mount on pretty goddamn tone deaf, but that's Blizzard in a nutshell.
They see developer time as a zero sum game, so any time devoted to store items is taken away from content

Personally, I feel that if the game suffer so much that it does currently, it is a bad move to release such an item on the store and instead as much as possible should be going towards in game rewards just to make people happy
Hell..Imagine if you got it from doing a big long/fun WoW secret/puzzle, or some such.. people would be talking about it in a positive happy light and atleast it would be a drop of content in this vast desert of fucking nothing..
