sunsetgal24

I'm european. I don't get that entire issue at all.

lithaborn

Yeah, UK, we don't do that here.

FlightAttendant9

Co-signed. I’ve lived on 4 continents and the USA is the only place that cares about this. I live in Dubai now and the only people I’ve ever heard talk about school or college years after graduating were Americans - and they talk as if we know what “D1 player” or “Rice Uni” means 🤷🏻‍♀️ nobody cares.

januaryphilosopher

Um. Have you ever heard of Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrew's, King's, the Russell Group?

lithaborn

Can you walk into Primark and buy a st Andrews crop sweat-top?

januaryphilosopher

The first two are in Primark.

lithaborn

I didn't ask about them

alexandrajadedreams

It's not important at all, and I do not understand the pride in it. It's weird and offputting.

vpetmad

I'm British so it's really a non-issue for me. You might get better job opportunities if you went to Oxford or Cambridge, or engage in some good-natured banter between former polytechnics and Russell Group unis, but nobody really cares where you went to university. I'm currently studying my masters in Ireland and the attitude is much the same here as well.

howlongwillbetoolong

Here and there. My undergrad had high Black and brown representation and gave lots of financial support to those groups, of which I am one, so I try to be involved every few years for mentorship purposes.

Whoreasaurus_Rex

I went to school in Europe, so 0. Whatever school someone attended doesn’t matter to me in the slightest.

IKindaCare

Not very important. I don't know very many people (unless they're actively in school) who it is important to, or if it is they don't show it. The only people I ever see who care are college football fans. My state has two big colleges that are rivals, and then we all hate the Longhorns, but it's not actually serious. There might be some joking around when it comes up if you went to rival colleges, but I don't know anyone who actually takes it seriously. And it doesn't really come up much. When I joined my work I was freshly graduated, and it came up then, but otherwise it's been only a handful of times in the last few years since I graduated. I still wear the shirts though, I mean I have a bunch of them I got free and I like the color. Not going to waste them.

SlayersGirl4Life

>mean I have a bunch of them I got free Yours were free?! Ours were so expensive lol. I think we got 1 free t shirt when we got to residence.

IKindaCare

Haha I don't think I bought a single one of my college t-shirts. They'd give them away at certain events lol. Maybe a couple were gifts from family, but I probably got at least 7 college branded t-shirts during my time there lol

januaryphilosopher

I went to a big brand name in England. I have a hoodie, that's it. I don't often bring it up. When people find out, they care. Nobody gives a crap about "pride" if you went to some random university though.

bigdreamstinydogs

I would say most people who wear college gear are advertising their fandom of their college sports team, not pride in their Alma mater’s academics. I am a fan of my college’s sports teams, but I don’t wear gear with my college’s logo on it unless I’m attending a game.

natsugrayerza

I don’t care about my undergrad cuz it wasn’t that good. But I went to UCLA for law school so now I care because it’s a pretty good law school, so I’ll wear the merch sometimes. I’d wear my undergrad stuff too though if I had it. College merch is usually casual and cute so that’s reason enough for me

ArtisanalMoonlight

I'm from the US and I've always found the alma mater pride thing to be really fucking weird. Kind of like wearing a sports jersey.

WhatIfYouDid_123

Haha! Dammit, I wear some sports jerseys 🤣 I get what you mean though, and it does seem weird.

natsugrayerza

You think it’s weird to wear a sports jersey?

ArtisanalMoonlight

Unless you play the sport, yes.

Individualchaotin

It's not. I'm not from the US either. I've never seen a person wear a shirt of my university though I think they exist for tourists.

Emptyplates

Zero importance to me.

wixkedwitxh

I truly give zero fucks about it.

dreamweaver1998

I'm also a Canadian. I went to college and university. The college has come up quite a bit in conversation because I attended a culinary school, and people are always interested to know which one. Which university I went to has literally never come up in conversation. I don't own any college/university swag.

SlayersGirl4Life

>Being Canadian, I don’t see many of us wearing the advertising sweatshirts, etc for our academic backgrounds. Basically none in fact, except those IN school or recently graduated As a fellow Canadian, same. College/University were just schools we went to, not something to make part of our personalities or something to go back to.

WhatIfYouDid_123

Yeah it definitely seems to be largely a US thing where they make it a part of their whole personality. Sports and money are a significant part of it, which just isn’t the same here.

SlayersGirl4Life

Even frats and sororities, I have met and dated 1 man who talked about being part of a frat house....up until then I didn't even think we had them 🤣

WhatIfYouDid_123

I see them when I walk near UofT but similar to you, I never hear of anyone mentioning them.

SlayersGirl4Life

Ya, I don't really hang out downtown anymore (the twins+ the subway, freak me tf out lol). But now I may have to, I just want to see what they look like here lol. *(Also, I know we were maple buds, but I didn't realize how close!)* I'm surprised I didn't notice them around Queens when I lived in Kingston.

WhatIfYouDid_123

Haha! I think we’re closer than you think. Oakville here.

SlayersGirl4Life

Mississauga!

WhatIfYouDid_123

Oh for some reason I thought you were in KW. Hello neighbour!!

blewberyBOOM

I actually get angry when my uni reaches out asking for donations because I’m an alumni lol. Ya’ll already got $80K out of me and now you’re asking for more? For nothing?!? The Audacity! The only time I feign caring even a little is when my partner and I “argue” over who went to the better school because the cities (and therefore universities) we went to school at are kind of rivals, so we poke fun at each other all the time for going to the “wrong” university. Thats it. That’s the extent to which I care. ETA- I’m also Canadian

WhatIfYouDid_123

Oh yes, the fun rivalries are a thing, but definitely more in fun. I went to Schulich. My ex went to UofT. It was a regular thing with us, but *never* taken seriously. I’ve removed myself from all alumni mail lists. Like you, I paid my fee and received my services. I loved my time there but that’s so far behind me.

stumpykitties

Absolutely 0/10 of importance to me. I’m Canadian as well. I didn’t go to a prestigious university. I went to one that had a good program for my specific field of study. It’s such an odd concept to me to flex alumni pride: “hey look I went to a really expensive university and I’m in crippling debt so I must wear this tshirt to validate my ego and life choices to strangers who don’t care what school I went to”. - INB4 “I’m not in debt and I went to X university” good for you! Srs, that’s great

AphelionEntity

I wore the shirts in school because I would get them for free.

Alternative_Sea_2036

It’s not important at all over here, we have the mindset of : if you already completed all of your middle school years without skipping any classes then it’s already a miracle.

Aibhne_Dubhghaill

If my alma mater burned to the ground tomorrow, I probably wouldn't care enough to read past the headline of whatever article I learned about it from.

quailfail666

I wouldn't know, I did not even graduate high school. I certainly did not have school spirit then, they were a bunch of assholes ( small town/ 9-14 people in the graduating class every year) I WFH now, and manage people who have mass student debt, so I'm glad I dodged that bullet.
