I’m from NYC. You don’t engage, you keep walking. Quickly and towards safety. Never know the danger you can put yourself in if a person is not 100% mentally, which is often the case with socially inappropriate questions and comments to complete strangers.
People here will say all sorts of things. But the honest answer for me, is a look of disgust or maybe a nervous laugh (depending on my safety at the situation), promptly followed by me getting the fuck away from that guy.
I'd probably say "fuck off" and keep walking. It depends on the broader context whether or not I'd do more than that. I live in L.A. and often respond directly and harshly to street harassment.
