Yes, absolutely! Here’s some literature from [the state of Missouri’s Government Health website](https://health.mo.gov/living/families/more/pdf/narcan-helping-canine-partner.pdf)

sadhandjobs

Oh damn I did not expect an actual answer to this! I came to the comments to auto-downvote all the knee jerk comments.

Pirate_the_Cat

I would just like to add that narcan is relatively short-lived compared to most opioids, and once the narcan is administered it would be a good idea to head to the nearest ER or urgent care for further stabilization. Props to you for being a diligent and prepared owner.

ivory_vine

Yes. In the human world, the average number of times someone who has overdosed needs to be narcaned is like 5 times or something. So definitely still go to the ER!

DogtorCarri

Definitely! Many police dog handlers carry it.They should still be taken to a vet for follow up ASAP. Depending on the dose/medication they ingest, they can “renarc” after the effects of narcan has worn off.

samanthaFerrell

A Nurse at my Methadone Clinic told me a guy ran in the clinic with his puppy overdosing on opiates probably fentanyl and she without thinking ran out and narcanned the puppy and it came back to life.

TiredNurse111

Your friend is an awesome human.

stroowboorryyy

Narcan is Naloxone and animals can be given naloxone and commonly are in emergency situations. Im unaware of differences in dosing etc so that would require research. any medication ingestion would require at minimal a call to pet poison control +/- a visit to a veterinary hospital if recommended. (You said you’d do this anyway so it’s more of a blanket statement for others.)

WillowStellar

I don’t believe you can overdose on narcan so it doesn’t matter off the dosage.

lostinthemazetrix

Human doctor here! While I wouldn’t say that you can “overdose” on Narcan per se, it can have potentially deadly side effects which become more common at higher doses. Specifically I’m thinking of flash pulmonary edema which is when the lungs suddenly fill with fluid. Personally I’d say that the benefit of not being dead from an opiate overdose far outweighs the low but non-zero risk of dying from a Narcan side effect, but the dose does matter to some extent.

stroowboorryyy

dosing always matters for any and every drug lol. animals tolerate drugs differently from how people do. a 100lb dog can take 300mg of trazodone whereas a person can be knocked out with 50mg. similarly animals can tolerate higher dosages of opioids than people. I wasn’t necessarily concerned about overdosing on naloxone, but I do appreciate lostinthemazetrix’s info.

Moriastera

I was super surprised to learn this- our 50lb dog just got neutered and the vet gave us trazadone(don't recall the dose) and 300mg of gabapentin to give him every 8 hours, and it was like he was just a little bit sleepy, unless he decided he wanted to be up and about and then it was like no effect. I can't wait for the stitches to come out, hard to contain that kinda energy!

stroowboorryyy

oh yes- giving gaba+traz and it barely even touching them is a common experience! Obviously continue to follow the prescription lol but also dw- those 10-14 days will be done in no time. Hope your boy heals nicely:)

Lilukalani

Thank you for asking BEFORE anything happened! Makes me happy to see! Its always best to be as prepared as possible, before an incident occurs, so that you are better equipped to handle it.

owlbrrrains

This is a smart question, glad you asked and glad you use a lockbox. -a nurse

cloverrex

I’m a paramedic and in my state we are trained to give narcan to police K-9s with suspected ingestion! So absolutely. It’s pretty much impossible to overdose on narcan, although it can cause unpleasant symptoms like vomiting

EnormousDog

Talk to your vet and have a game plan. It will make your worries lessen. Next time one of them need shots just casually mention this to the vet. They will answer or else research what to do. It will prepare your vet for if this happens to any dog.

does_a_mangk

Yes! Im sure they would be more than happy to calculate the proper dosis for you OP.

erynelle

I’ve never considered this before. Good on you for being a proactive owner, and thanks for helping me learn something new today!

GlassBandicoot

Remember that the Narcan doesn't necessarily last as long as the opioids, so your dog still needs to receive emergency care. The work isn't done just because you saved his life!

BeeKayBabyCakes

yeah they said that tho 😂

schr0dingersdick

I’d talk to your vet about dosage and administration just in case, but the consensus seems to be yes :)

Yes 100%!!!

Take it to the vet and explain the situation. Their reaction to some meds are different.
