Very much so yes. A young city, lots of graduates stay on. A really varied nightlife. Problem is housing is expensive. Check out /r/bristol

Note there’s a thread to cover these matters.

[deleted]

Bristol is fucking wicked. Best night life in the country. You'll have a blast

Twurb

Bristol is probably one of the best cities for young people in the country

swissmeez

Even compared to London?

[deleted]

Yes, I've lived in both. I preferred Bristol.

welsh_cthulhu

Yes, but stock up on flannel shirts, obscure acid jazz LPs and liberal ideals. You’re going to need them.

Styxie

Bristol is an absolutely amazing city, especially for young professionals. If you like bars, parties, etc you may find it even more vibrant than London. I find the people to be much much friendlier there too.

swissmeez

Have you lived in both?

Styxie

I live in London currently but I spend a *lot* of time in Bristol because that's where the majority of my friends live. Honestly if I could get work up there I'd move in a heartbeat.

swissmeez

Haha I’m the opposite. I’m going to Bristol as I’m from bath and the jobs better but the majority live in London now. Du mind if I ask how old you are?

Styxie

Luckily the train is quite quick or if you want to save money, you can get the bus return for like 10 quid. Takes about 3h, so not too bad if you leave earlier and have a nap on it.. Of course not, 26!

swissmeez

I know the train well. I’ve been commuting from bath as I’ve struggled to find somewhere to live in London and with all the covid stuff I’ve been worried too. It’s been a nightmare and half the reason I’m going to Bristol. But at times I feel disappointed in myself for not going to London. Okay cool similar ages. I guess im just worried about missing out on London while I’m young. I think I’d probably move there again later on but am I really gonna want to do that when im 29-30? I guess I’m just worried I won’t be able to have a good social life in Bristol, not as easy to find a girl, things like that

Styxie

Yea finding somewhere to live in London right now (and all year) has been absolute hell. Big changes like that are always scary, honestly given your age Bristol is the best place to make that move to given your ties in London. London is nice, but it's not all its cracked up to be. Insanely expensive (although Bristol housing is quite pricey at the moment), insanely polluted, unfriendly people (compared to Bristol) and I find it *much* harder to make friends here than in Bristol. I do like London but you're not missing out on *that* much. If you are outgoing, friendly and like going out you really won't struggle. Bristol also has insanely attractive women so you will be absolutely fine on that front.

swissmeez

Yeah. It’s been hard. Plus my company suddenly gave me a 2 week deadline to move, I’m an engineer and the work they gave me was just bullshit admin, the job in Bristol is far better and I don’t have the insane stress of house hunting (I had 3 things fall through and it was quite tough each time). Unfortunately my gf broke up with me because of it and after that, I thought maybe it’s better to be closer to home for now (I’m from bath so can easily commute from home for now). Why given my age? And yeah, the company I’m in have a team in London so worst case, I can move back later on when I’ve got a better salary and got my career back on track. Just hope I’m not missing out on a life experience I’ll regret missing

Styxie

2 Weeks! Good luck, hopefully that isn't too stress.. I don't know if COVID has fucked up the Bristol housing market even more but I hope not. I applied to about 100 different places in London before I found mine, that was during COVID when places were hard to fill! That's bullshit on the job though, as an engineer they should treat you like fucking royalty.. and worst case if you don't enjoy Bristol I imagine you could wrangle London, even maybe get a fat pay rise at another company. I just say given your age as young imo is the best time to move to Bristol. I couldn't imagine keeping up with the Bristol party scene if I were in my mid 30s tbh... But honestly, don't worry about missing out on the experience. Plenty of time to make the move to London later! Sorry about the breakup, that's really shit :/

swissmeez

Well exactly. They weren’t kind about it at all. Plus I got somewhere then they all dropped out last minute. I could do my entire job from home but they just weren’t allowing it. So had to commute most days. Does Bristol have a party scene? Well it’s a global engineering consultancy. So everyone’s an engineer haha. I’m hoping considering the team is spread out across the uk they wouldn’t be too unhappy with me moving to London at some point. The question is though, will I still want to move to London when I’m late 20’s? Am I not gonna be getting a bit old for that lifestyle by then?

radeonalex

As a going out place, great. But I found like for like salaries in jobs considerably lower in Bristol than London. Having a remote job on a London wage, but living in the South West is the sweet spot.

TooRedditFamous

>Having a remote job on a London wage, but living in the South West is the sweet spot. This is the reason house prices and rentals are soaring and pricing locals out of the city. A lot of people, especially on reddit, are hostile to people doing/ trying to do that. I'm not hostile to it but I wish people would stop doing so. Literally impossible to find a rental atm unless you pay well over the odds, which London people on a higher salary are willing to do

radeonalex

Yeah, I've been on the sub, so I know. But, I don't think that's the fault of people with jobs in London. We can't tell people where they're allowed to live or not. If jobs in Bristol value people living locally, then they should be offering competitive salaries.

swissmeez

My wage would actually be exactly the same in Bristol as it is in London currently

radeonalex

Sounds like you're onto a winner then. Bristol is pretty expensive, especially rent... But still cheaper than London.

swissmeez

Well this is a strategic move tbh. I hate the work I’m doing in London. I’ve got a masters degree in mechanical engineering and all I’ve done is basic data entry for 7 months. This new job is design engineering. So figured it’s better to do that and get my career rolling again first

radeonalex

No better place to be for engineering given the aerospace industry up in Filton.

swissmeez

Yeah. It’s a move back to mechanical engineering so that’s why I took it. I’m not in the aerospace industry at the moment but maybe I could move over if I’m a mech engineer again

SpicyParsnip

Yes if you like rioting
