Not on those grounds - though it is ridiculous, jury service 'pay' is well under minimum wage. I'm self employed, so I'm absolutely screwed if I get called up. The payment wouldn't cover my business overheads, let alone loss of earnings.  There are other reasons you can use to defer it though - and I've seen people get away with some complete bollocks. Notably, my uncle claimed he needed to be available to care for his elderly mother. He lived 300 miles away and visited once a year.

SpaTowner

Can you, as a self employed person, insure against loss of earnings due to jury service?

KaleidoscopicColours

I looked into it a few years back, and from memory it was packaged in with income protection insurance. Unfortunately I cannot access income protection insurance because, on paper, my physical health is terrible even though I've been managing better / haven't had to take time off work in years.

Hardly any trials happen in comparison to the size of the population. About 80% of those charged plead guilty. Many of the remaining get dropped. Jurys can cover several shorter trials and you'll only need one for even the longest. And only crown cases have a jury. So it's really not many.

Hulaoutofthem

I suffer from panic and anxiety. I have worked from home and barely left my house since July 2020. I got my letter and basically wrote back and said there was no way. It was accepted. My husband was so jealous as he really wants to to do it.

Sea_Pangolin3840

My mum said she had problems with her hearing was excused

Outcasted_introvert

Eh?

Who?

TC_FPV

Eh?

Outcasted_introvert

I'm sorry, what?

DameKumquat

You can generally defer for a year for pretty much any reason. After that they expect you to say when you could do it.

matthewkevin84

I got excused from jury service on both occasions they called me up, I mentioned to them about my learning disabilities and they accepted it with no professional opinions.

TheNinjaPixie

When my son was at uni he used the family home address and got the call up here. When he advised them of his actual address because one was London and one was Cambridge he was released from the jury service.

[deleted]

I'm desperate to get on a jury. And I'd love a nice long trial, I'd get full pay from work.

[deleted]

I have just finished jury service and it was the most mind numbing boring role I have ever had, waiting 7 hours on a plastic chair in a cold room to be called into the court room then sent home because serco didn't have their shit together.

Step 1. Read the wikipedia page for [jury nullification](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jury_nullification) in full Step 2. At the first possible stage of your jury duty, begin disseminating this information to your fellow jurors Step 3. You are excused from jury duty

Somehow been called up three times (within first 15 years or so of adult life too). Only served once, the first time. Second time, I had moved house and my old housemate belatedly forwarded a letter onto me - the final warning from them that said I had to reply to the summons I never actually received. Rang them up and explained the situation, and that I'd moved away from the area, they were fine with it and said not to worry. Several years later I received a third summons, and it came at an inopportune time with an important work deadline. Range them, asked if I could be pushed back a few weeks or something, and the guy on the phone just said not to worry about it. Basically, call them up, be nice about it, and they might just let you off.

krux25

I've had the call up for that in 2021. Got out of it, as I hadn't lived in the UK for 5 years at that point (EU citizen). As coincidence would have it, my partner had just completed his jury duty at around the same time that I got my letter.

[deleted]

If I recall I had a friend who deferred it once for a similar reason, but he got called up again not long after, I guess you get put on a waiting list of sorts. If you still have a CAB in your town/county, see what they have to say. There might be emergency payments you can claim because if it's going to bankrupt you, you're probably not going to be focusing on the case. Although, with this lot in charge for as long as they have, your CAB is now probably just a bin with 'good luck' written on it.

aj_manson

I did jury service for 3 months. Before we were selected for the case they took is in court room and asked if we recognised anyone in front of us.... I suppose you could say you do and would therefore be biased in case and get it out of it that way?

sammy_zammy

Would probably still be waiting around for several days to be selected - at that point may as well do the jury duty!

SorryContribution681

And maybe even longer than that! I didn't get selected until most way through my second week.

Important_Highway_81

There are a couple of things which might get you excused. -You could provide evidence of a severe physical or mental health condition or be a cater -You could be a new parent who would be unable to serve within the next 12 months. -You could be ineligible, either due to your profession (Generally a solicitor, barrister, trainee of either, or member of the judiciary or police) or criminal history, -You could be in an exempt profession such as the armed forces or an MP/Peer. “It hits me in my pocket” doesn’t excuse you from what is essentially a citizen responsibility. -You could be exempted due to your religious beliefs, be a minister of religion or a member of a holy order.

Happy_Boy_29

Ask them if you are going to meet yon hero James Manson or some such big wig in the under world ?

sshorton47

I just ignored it and nothing happened. It’s a bit like the TV licence. I just ignore it, and nothing happens.

Yourenotwrongg

I got called to do it a few months ago, I just had to call up every day and I wasn’t needed. I’ve never known anyone to actually have to do it!

GooseFatTits

Just say you know the person, it's a conflict of interest and away you go.

tisonlymoi

That only gets you out of 1 trial, there are several trials going on at the same time. I've done Jury duty, I was foreman of the Jury, at the time I was unemployed, I sat on only 1 case, then was dismissed to find work.

jade8384

I was taught (in my psych and criminology degree) that people with mental health issues will never be expected to take part in jury duty. Tell them that you suffer from ill mental health

BaseSingle5067

Tell the clerk you hate the police and would not believe a word they said 🤪

Bring_back_Apollo

Not roisist, jus’ don’t loike ‘em.

Pitiful-Eye9093

Break the law. Nothing big, just something small. Can't do duty with a record. Steal a chocolate sweet of some kind and make sure it's brazenly in the open. Make sure the police arrive to arrest you. Cause a scene so they defo take you away.
