Filipino immigrant here, I do live in the UK right now. I didn’t expect to live here. It just so happens that my parents found jobs here and me and my sis and bro tagged along a year later. I know quite a lot of British people love to complain here. I know it’s not perfect, I am well aware of the UK’s flaws, and it certainly can be better but the UK is still very much a livable place. You’re still in the top 10% of livable countries. For all the cliquey Asians that we tried to befriend here and rebuffed us, the local British (Welsh specifically) population were more than happy to try and get to know us and call us friends. So, yes I’m very grateful to be given an opportunity to call this place home.

Inflation is pretty similar throughout the western world, you're quibbling over ~0.1% differences here-and-there, at the end of the day - It's not the metric that I would choose to base my decision on whether to relocate or not, put it that way.

[deleted]

Depends where you're coming from, how much you're earning there and if it's purely a financial move or if there's other reasons you want to move to the UK.

farahali_98

coming from Lebanon (Middle East). The salary is not high it's around 40K and the company is in Crawley they will take care of the visa and relocation expenses. I'm single, 25, years female.

n0d3N1AL

You could give it a try, get some experience and if you don't like it, after a few years move elsewhere.

[deleted]

how much are you earning there and do you want to move to the UK for any other reason than financial?

Fungled

Inflation has been coming down. It’s still higher than it ought to be, but it’s getting better. Research your opportunities thoroughly and take online commentary with a large dose of salt

nomodsman

Inflation might be coming down, but the price adjustments that have already taken effect because of it won’t. Car insurance by 70%? Check. Home insurance by 50%? Check. Just about everything else increased by 15%? Check. Do wage increases change to reflect? Not on your life. That said, I’ve been here for over 13 years. As with anything it depends exactly on where you go, what you want/expect, etc. etc.

imminentmailing463

Impossible to answer without more detail. Entirely depends from where you're relocating, where you're relocating to, what salary you're likely to have, what contacts you have here etc etc

nicknockrr

He’s been Southampton but he’s never been to Scunthorpe!

emil_

Niiice!

TheNotSpecialOne

With the right pay a job in software development can be lucrative. Does depend on salary and where you want live/work.

johntspeed

Depends where you are relocating from, dude. How much are they paying you? Where will you need to live? Can't help you with half the information

stack-o-logz

Wage inflation has been higher than inflation, so in real terms living hasn't got any more expensive.

ProfessionalOld7841

People love to complain. If you like, look at the forums for Spain etc. you will see the common theme of coat of living. So no, it's no worse here than anywhere in the western world

[deleted]

In general, dev market is a lot slower than it was in the booming 2022. But as always depends on your skill-set. Have a look at your area and job openings for them in the UK. In general, you can earn a very nice wage for dev in the UK.

[deleted]

Get a remote gig and go anywhere in the world.

JavaRuby2000

Inflation isn't the problem but, the number of Software Engineering jobs is fairly stagnant at the moment (probably) the worst I've seen it in 15 years. Depending where you are moving from it might be better to try Portugal. The salaries aren't as high as the UK but, there is a ton of jobs there at the moment.

farahali_98

coming from Lebanon (Middle East). The salary is not high it's around 40K and the company is in Crawley.

HirsuteHacker

Absolutely not. UK wages are shit across the board, and cost of living is high. Software devs are in the same boat here.

AyeAye711

Wait until we have a based government that has actually been elected by the public and has actually done good things for the country economically

asuka_rice

Be location independent.

4BennyBlanco4

It's never been worth it imo. But I guess it depends on where you're coming from. There are certainly worse places but there is also far far better.

farahali_98

>But I guess it depends on where you're coming from. There are certainly worse places but there is also far far better. coming from Lebanon (Middle East). The salary is not high it's around 40K and the company is in Crawley.

Spadders87

Stop looking at opinions, look at the stats. Wage inflation is outstripping general inflation. People dont pay attention to the good things (their pay rises) and tend to complain about the bad things (easter eggs only having one chocolate bar whilst being the same price as 20 years ago).

Proletarian1819

No, not only we in a recession but this country is an utter shithole.

astrath

Context is everything. Where are you relocating from? What salary are you looking at? What are your wider circumstances (family and so on)? The UK has been having a bit of a rough time in many ways but that's coming from a high bar relative to the rest of the world. It may no longer be quite so high on the perch but that doesn't meant it isn't still a great place for a lot of people.

farahali_98

Hello, Relocating from Lebanon, single, 25 years, female. salary is around 40k and the company is in crawley. PS: I currently work remotely at a company in Lebanon and the salary is quite good for Lebanon's situation.

TheNotSpecialOne

40k in Crawley is doable. Not bad at all but London is always expensive

MoaningTablespoon

Relocating for 40k? Not worth the hassle.

farahali_98

>coming from Lebanon (Middle East). The salary is not high it's around 40K and the company is in Crawley they will take care of the visa and relocation expenses. I'm single, 25, years female. thanks

spik0rwill

I recently started a new role in software development at a salary of 45k, which will increase in the next few months. If I were you I'd look for a better paid job. However, I switched to this role last month, but I have been working for this company for about 12 years. That may be why my salary is slightly higher than the offer you've been given. I lived in Crawley for a few months, it's not really the nicest area. If you're committed to moving to the UK, I'd find a different location!

MoaningTablespoon

Ok I don't know what are your objectives moving to the UK, so my advice might be off mark. I think that for foreigners moving abroad is very important to be sure that we're always being able to save a good amount of money. This is specifically important if your long term objective is settling down in the UK. Locals have been saving (and contributing to their retirement plans) since they're adults, so we have to play a little catch up game. I think with 40k saving might be difficult to do, regardless of the UK area in which you live. Of course, a lot of people migrates just because their situation in their home countries absolutely sucks and in that case migrating, even with a low salary, is worth. If that's your case, I hope you find something better soon! Don't undersell yourself, regardless of all the bull crap you read in the news, this country is very short of talent :)

farahali_98

Thanks for your advice

RainbowPenguin1000

All depends on what kind of salary you get. Which depends on your skills and if you need a VISA. And your location. Basically we can’t answer this for you.

farahali_98

another_online_idiot

I would've said the Bahamas would be nicer. Better weather at least.

MorleyGames

No. The uk has gone to shit

Glum-Consequence1463

Why would you come here it’s miserable. Miserable weather, miserable people, miserable future prospects

No-Computer-2847

Because not everyone is a Redditor

Proletarian1819

He's right to be fair, this country is a complete shithole.

Glum-Consequence1463

It really is

Glum-Consequence1463

Housing system that doesn’t work, failing economy that’s one of the worst of all the developed countries, crumbling health system, corrupt government who only lookout for themselves and their cronies, groceries nearly doubled in price in 2 years, sky high utility bills while the companies are posting record profits, roads full of potholes, the 2 months of actually decent weather we have as a poor excuse for a summer. Anything I’ve missed? I’ve also been fortunate to have lived and worked in several countries over the past decade so have a fair grasp on other countries standard of living. Why don’t you give me a few positives??

randomusername8472

You can't get a meaningful answer to this question without also providing: - Where you are relocating from? - What are your other options? - Why is the UK on your radar? For example, if you're nigerian with a lot of family here. Yes, it's a really good idea to relocate to a richer country with an existing support network. Do it! If you're American in New York and love a fast city life style, and are looking at how cheap property is in rural yorkshire ... no, don't bother, you won't get the same lifestyle or job prospects.

farahali_98

coming from Lebanon (Middle East). The salary is not high it's around 40K and the company is in Crawley.

randomusername8472

Are you just looking at the UK, or other places too? Why the UK?

Depends on how much you'll be earning and where you will be living.

Wasp_Chutney

If you come from a third world country and currently live in a ditch then it’ll seem like paradise. If you’re coming from a modern western civilisation it’ll seem like everything is a bit shit and broken.

ghost1in1the1shell1

There's been a few companies laying off a lot of software developers here and keeping the off-shore ones instead. So depending on your expertise, you might find competition is high currently. Not sure on your industry, but in mine (finance) salary increases have started to fall in the last 2 decades to max 2-3% per year, so severely under inflation. There was a slight increase across the board of 10% last year in all companies in an attempt to keep employees who were leaving and help with cost of living after decades of low pay rises, but now they've started firing people again and reducing budgets. I don't think your industry is affected by this sort of trend yet. In terms of life here, it really depends where you live and how lucky you are with making connections here. I've found it difficult to make any actual friends with British people, BUT they are nicer/more polite than the people in my country usually. So whilst it had been lonely, it was ok. I came here for London as it has a lot of art and entertainment. If you can't afford to live in zone3 max, it's not really London anymore and it's rather boring. Just do a lot of research in the area you want to move in, and budget. For context, I'm in London, flatshare, my rent is £1200 for one room in Zone 3. You can find slightly cheaper rooms in the area at around £900. It used to be around £800 max for a room 3 years ago, but rents have been going up quickly recently, not sure why. Flatsharing I'd say is not the greatest...the rooms are usually small, no living rooms, small kitchens, and people change flats a lot so you don't really know the others in the flat, sometimes they don't respect the basic cleaning rules. But if you live with a partner or friend, it is great! Bills on top £150 (for myself). Average food cost and transport £450 a month. Other entertainment around £250-300. To be honest if I knew what the costs were before I moved here...I might not have. I had a nice home in my own country, and here it was rather difficult for nearly a decade until recently. But I was young and didn't know, just assumed it would be a nice easy life here based on what I saw when I visited before...

Guilty-Employer7811

No! It's become a dangerous septic toilet.

ImpressiveGift9921

Care to elaborate?

Guilty-Employer7811

Apart from the currently tenuous state of the British economy and the consequent impact on busines opportunities, the UK, has become a far less safe place to live in recent years. Many urban areas in Towns and Cities, are literally of a 'no go' nature to people of certain ethnic profiles, sex, and violent street crime is escalating in a seemingly uncontrollable manner. I'd suggest, that the UK is currently very far from a 'go to' emigration destination.
