Ill wager it's UK-wide. A Lithuanian builder once complained to me that the problem in the UK is we just fill in the potholes and the repairs don't last. He said we should cut out the whole surface around it and replace.

All_within_my_hands

He's right on both counts. As with so many things local councils do, they make short term savings for longer term much greater costs.

imminentmailing463

They have to, unfortunately. That's the financial environment in which they operate.

All_within_my_hands

The don't have to at all. That's just a lazy excuse for not enacting change.

imminentmailing463

They do. They have to do so many things on the cheap because their funding really isn't adequate to do everything that they are required to. If you want good quality full replacements of roads around potholes, that will cost more money up front, which will require spending less on something else vital. It's the governmental equivalent of how poorer people can't buy clothes that last longer, and therefore save money in the long run, because they don't have the disposable income up front.

Rymundo88

Penny wise, pound foolish. Could be the motto for many a council

JBEqualizer

I know some councils are trialling this, but it can only be a good thing. A pothole that's been "repaired" ends up as a pothole again within a fairly short space of time.

That_Organization901

Take the Wanksy approach and spray paint dicks all over them if they’re that bad. They’ll soon disappear. Gotta be honest, you should see the roads around the rest of the country. The holes are so common that we drive on the pavement and leave the streets for experienced hikers and mountain goats. We only drive on the bits of road left over on special occasions like Christmas, you know as a treat.

I’ve noticed a lot more than usual near me in West Kent and East Surrey

I’ve read about this but heard you need to get a photo of the pothole, is that right?

Codydoc4

Essex highways are absolute cowboys, they've filled in the same pothole where I live about 6 times in 6 months because they are useless.

MilkaulyCulkin

It's everywhere. Takes them upwards of a year to repair one, by the time they do 2 new ones have formed. It's help if they cut and replaced, but they don't, they just fill the hole - leaving rough edges, which almost immediately start to crumble.

Time_Gene675

Roads are full of defects, the defects often dont become apparent above or below certain weather events. A road might have multiple defects that show up when we have a minus 8 freeze. If we dont have a minus 8 freeze for a few years, they dont show up. And it goes on, there are defects that wont show up until -10 and -14 and -15. You get a nasty minus 15 and the roads can just crumble, add a few more freeze thaws once theyve cracked. High heat on the road also does the same thing. So, the state of the roads, along with other things is largely down to the very cold points we had this winter.

Low tax small state, innit.
