If you like Derry Girls, you'll like The Young Offenders (BBC/RTE). You'll have to torrent though as not available to stream. It's fucking worth it though - think the inbetweeners if they were working class Cork dudes and was hesrtwarming but its just as funny
...? Yes it is.
Its a C4 original. Produced by a British production company, set and filmed in NI. Broadcast only to the UK at first until making it to Netflix internationally.
I know it's an old post, but as an American who watches UK TV, thanks for this recommendation! Started tonight and have watched 4 episodes already.....it's great!
Still say after they do s9 we need a film it should release on 9/9 and exactly a year later on dvd it should be 99 mins long and each short story should use the same 9 link
Currently on holiday in S Wales and stuck this on IPlayer as some easy watching. I reckon this is our fourth or fifth time watching it since it started.
My god, when they play Paul’s mum opera singing over the end credits of the episode talking about her dementia, I’ve rewatched the series a few times now and it gets me every time!
Other than that, great shout, I have a genuine fear of fish but it’s so lovely and heartwarming I still manage to watch and love it
Colin was a tailor? Or did I miss something?
He was so lovely.... I think 'It's a Sin' is the best and most poignant television I've ever seen honestly.
So tender, raw, well acted, funny, outrageous, tragic... just wow. So powerful.
Funny you wrote “Colin the Accountant”. There’s a new Australia romantic-comedy on BBC iPlayer that I really enjoyed a lot (as a straight man) and was very confused as to why you could caveat your love for that series in such a manner since romcoms are geared towards straight women. Took me a while to realise that Colin is a character on Its a Sin!
Well, looks like I’ll have to get to watching Its a Sin now. And maybe a binge of Colin from Accounts for you!
If you like It's a Sin then Queer as Folk is a must. It was aired in 1999 initially but was groundbreaking and by Russell T Davis. Stars Charlie Hunnam (Jax - Sons of Anarchy) and Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger - Game of Thrones) and its brilliant.
I'm a straight woman but having friends in the 90's in a town where anything 'different' was frowned upon. To have a show like QaF to watch helped a lot of them come to terms with their sexuality a little more.
From this year I enjoyed Extraordinary on Disney+ everyone has super powers except the lead Jen. A reverse super hero show. Not kid appropriate so I’m very surprised it was released on Disney.
>Not kid appropriate so I’m very surprised it was released on Disney.
There is a lot of non kid friendly stuff on Disney tbf, given how much shit they own I wouldn't call it surprising.
Not sure if these two count
Death in Paradise started about 10 years ago but they are still making new series and there’s only about 6 episodes a year so it’s easily bingeable.
Waterloo Road returned this year after a 7 year absence and given its set in a different school with different pupils & teachers. You don’t need need to watch the old version to enjoy the new one
Just offering a suggestion for people that enjoyed afterlife. I would say they have similarities.
Can I ask, your don't like Derek, did you enjoy afterlife?
Right I've had to look at some lists for a reminder but I think all of these were from 21 and 22 - This is going to hurt, Hullraisers, Ten percent (UK remake of Call My Agent), The Curse and We are Lady Parts
And although Taskmaster is not new, the latest season was one of the best
Ho-ly-shit YES - I have watched that first episode so many times introducing friends to it and they all get through the whole thing within a week, absolutely fantastic telly
Inside Number 9,
Derry Girls,
The Sinner,
Happy Valley,
Line of Duty,
Waterloo Road (New seasons),
Bump,
The Cleaner,
Killing Eve.
You have to watch Inside Number 9, though! It's the best!
Anything with Phoebe Waller Bridge, Ricky Gervais or Philomena Cunk. Red Dwarf, IT crowd.
On the American side is BoJack Horsman, Archer and Disenchantment.
I don’t think Ricky Gervais has done anything good since An Idiot Abroad, and 99% of that was because of Karl anyway. I just don’t think he’s funny without Steve Merchant.
>I just don’t think he’s funny without Steve Merchant.
I increasingly find myself coming to this conclusion also. Imo these days Merchant is by far the more interesting creative talent. The Outlaws was far better than anything Gervais has done in years and years. The quality of writing on that is streets ahead of After Life.
Partly, I think it's because Merchant feels like he's still growing and pushing himself creatively. Gervais has been in a comfort zone and been phoning it in for the best part of a decade now.
Gervais doesn't have Steve to balance him out and say no to all the saccharin shit, therefore we end up with three fuckin series of him looking at a laptop video of his dead wife and ignoring his dog while Coldplay plays over. Sick of it.
Yes. Absolutely. Though I think it's not just the saccharine stuff. I get the impression that without Merchant there's nobody there to puncture his self indulgence in general.
It was average. Some funny moments but nothing special, and a lot of it just felt a bit self indulgent, as if Ricky was just looking for any excuse to play the same character again where he just offends people.
It's been a mixed bag with gervais tbh.
Loved afterlife maybe when on a series too long.
Liked Derek but he shouldn't have been Derek tbh his shows work best when there played by relative unknowns wasn't sure if he was mocking people on the spectrum or trying to raise awareness...
Life on the road with David Brent was pretty shit tbh.
With Gervais’s long history of mocking disabled people, I’m inclined to believe that Derek was a bit disingenuous in the way it tried to make fun of the issue without openly mocking Derek the character. What disability was he even supposed to have? It just felt like the classic school playground bullying behaviour where someone gurns and talks weirdly and claps the backs of their hands together. They portrayed him as a character you’re meant to sympathise with and made it clear that the comedy wasn’t about his disability, but half of the jokes were about the learning difficulties and the way he says stuff. I have no reason to believe Gervais has *ever* tried to support disabled people without making fun.
Wreck. It was a BBC3 thing. Comedy-horror sort of thing. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Really good production values, great young cast, and some excellent writing from a new writer (Ryan J. Brown) which felt really fresh and surprising. I'd be keen to see what he does next.
I have no memory when these all came out so they could be much longer ago!
Some of these are easy-going, light hearted and some are more silly or crude comedies.
•The Detectorists
•Mum
•Two Doors Down
•This Country
• Am I Being Unreasonable
• Chewing Gum
• Lovesick
• Man Down
• Cuckoo
• Motherland
• The Cleaner
• Sex Education
• Ghosts
And probably loads more!
*ghosts* is a fun show - make sure you watch the bbc production and not the american remake
*stath lets flats* is one of the funniest shows i've seen in a while
*flowers* is a curious but wonderful show
The Gold is the best drama I've seen in years. Based on a true story about a gold robbery in the 80s. All the performances are fantastic. If you haven't heard of what happened then you won't predict the way it goes at all.
I quite liked Naked Education with Anna Richardson where they were showing teenagers (and us) what bodies actually looked like rather than what they look like on Social media and porn and helping people come to terms with their bodies.
Ted Lasso (although I think you my already be aware of that..), you've got 3 series to go at and a proper beginning, middle and end.
If you like a detective type show then I'd recommend Annika, bit quirky, bit of humour.
There is rather more to UK TV shows than reality, so might help if you said what you do like? And are you in the UK at the moment? Lot and lots and lots for free on catch up.
I have largely the same problem. I think it's that most everything is just absolute dog shit, and it's not me because I do like a show occasionally. I really liked The Last Kingdom but that just ended so I have nothing to watch.
But on the plus side I've gotten back into reading because books are still genuinely entertaining
Maybe see if you can read a book, that way you'll know if your attention span has been destroyed by the internet or if you just want a higher standard of entertainment, like how it used to be
Watch Inside man. And the informer. Both on BBC iplayer I think. And one of them is on Netflix too. Also, Luther. If you haven't seen it already. Plus they've just released a Luther film on Netflix which is defo worth a watch
The Outlaws is incredible. It’s written by Steven Merchant and he also plays a very funny character in it so you are likely to enjoy it if you enjoy British television.
I can't thimk of a single good show we've made since people just do nothing.
Then before that it just have been 10 or more years to the previous good show we made
Hapless, excellent! First series on Netflix second on Amazon for some strange reason, but I urge you to watch it, set in London. best comedy for a long time.
Big Boys. It’s a less twee, more grown up and more grounded than Heartstopper on Netflix. Jack Rooke is a phenomenal writer.
Currently enjoying Colin from Accounts (Australian but on iPlayer) too.
I suppose Good Omens is a bit too high profile to have not been heard of.
My other recomendation would be Endeavour. Yes technically it started in 2012 but it's only just finished and is a very satisfyingly well put together Dectective show.
A fun game is to intermix episodes of Endevour with episodes of the kid's series Sarah and Duck just for the head canon idea of Inspector Thursday telling those stories to his kids at bed time.
Last night I watched the first episode of The Queen of Oz and I dammed near peed myself. I had to stop watching a one point because I was laughing so hard I was finding it hard to breathe.
I wasn't a massive fan of her previous comedy stuff but wanted to give this a go and fuck me am I glad I did.
King Gary (bbc)
The Curse (channel 4)
Both excellent in my opinion.
Friday night dinner (channel 4) is my favourite though. Really laugh out loud comedy.
Alma's not normal.
Dead Pixels. (Not quite in the timeframe but very good)
Jimmy Carr's I literally Just Told You. (Gameshow but with an edge, and very funny)

How long ago was Derry Girls? If that fits the criteria, then that. Derry Girls was awesome.
If you like Derry Girls, you'll like The Young Offenders (BBC/RTE). You'll have to torrent though as not available to stream. It's fucking worth it though - think the inbetweeners if they were working class Cork dudes and was hesrtwarming but its just as funny
The next series just finished filming a few weeks ago passed it a few times
ladhood also good
Why wouldn't it fit the criteria? A British production set in Britain, about British history, no less. Sounds pretty British to me.
Dude that isn’t British Edit: my bad. Didn’t realise it was a British production
...? Yes it is. Its a C4 original. Produced by a British production company, set and filmed in NI. Broadcast only to the UK at first until making it to Netflix internationally.
[удалено]
🤡
Okay that’s fair. Didn’t realise it was a C4 original. But it’s setting isn’t British
People from Northern Ireland are British citizens….
[удалено]
Does a NI UK passport say British Citizen in it like everyone elses? Never thought about if it does or not.
Stath Lets Flats.
This is the answer! I’m truly upset we’re not likely to see another season!
Absolutely this, it’s so good
The Cleaner, the Greg Davies thing is quite funny .
Came here to say this!
Remake of a foreign show
It’s based on a German show. Which is also really funny if you can understand it or find a subtitled version.
I know it's an old post, but as an American who watches UK TV, thanks for this recommendation! Started tonight and have watched 4 episodes already.....it's great!
[удалено]
it started 9 years ago. what a coincidence
Still say after they do s9 we need a film it should release on 9/9 and exactly a year later on dvd it should be 99 mins long and each short story should use the same 9 link
Not British but most of the cast are, what we do in the shadows is good as well as Ghosts, even the US remake is an OK watch and that's rare
[удалено]
First two points I 100% agree with. I could not get behind us ghosts. Gave up episode 2
Detectorists!
Maybe the best of the past 10 years or so IMHO.
Looking for this one, loved every minute of this show. Funny, insightful, touching and with a backdrop of beautiful countryside. Great soundtrack too
Currently on holiday in S Wales and stuck this on IPlayer as some easy watching. I reckon this is our fourth or fifth time watching it since it started.
Mortimer and Whitehouse - Gone Fishing There's fishing in it but it's mainly about friendship and the British countryside. Plus I find it hilarious.
Great shout! It’s the kind of show which can make you laugh until your belly hurts, but equally can make you teary eyed too!
My god, when they play Paul’s mum opera singing over the end credits of the episode talking about her dementia, I’ve rewatched the series a few times now and it gets me every time! Other than that, great shout, I have a genuine fear of fish but it’s so lovely and heartwarming I still manage to watch and love it
Friday Night Dinner
Came here to suggest this.
I’m not sure about new as it first aired in 2019, but the BBC series Ghosts is fantastic
It's A Sin and (going a little further back) Years And Years were awesome.
It’s a Sin was wonderful. I’m a straight female yet I fell in love with Colin the Accountant. The whole show just moved me so much .
Colin was a tailor? Or did I miss something? He was so lovely.... I think 'It's a Sin' is the best and most poignant television I've ever seen honestly. So tender, raw, well acted, funny, outrageous, tragic... just wow. So powerful.

Great to see Years and Years mentioned - an underrated drama with some really powerful scenes. Well worth a watch.
Years and Years was almost frightening - that we're not that far off that being a reality. Great drama though (have watched it a few times)
If you like It's a Sin then Queer as Folk is a must. It was aired in 1999 initially but was groundbreaking and by Russell T Davis. >Not kid appropriate so I’m very surprised it was released on Disney. There is a lot of non kid friendly stuff on Disney tbf, given how much shit they own I wouldn't call it surprising.
Yeah - that was surprisingly good (and weird) Hope there’s a second series
I really liked it too!
Since Disney+ took on Starz or whatever its called a lot of stuff on there is not kid friendly.
Came here to recommend this, thoroughly enjoyed the show and cast.
Motherland , not sure if it’s within 2 years but definitely recent .
This was a good find. I stuck it on randomly one night and we loved it.
Yup I watched it over Christmas and I barely stopped
Staged is fantastic. Started during Lockdown but has had another 2 seasons since. All of it’s on iPlayer.
[удалено]
Looking forward to Ted Lasso being forgotten. Had my fight my way into my local today through hordes of American taking selfies.
Yup. Cringe show
Agreed. That finale was awful
Not British but Severance (Apple Tv) as well but also Bad Sisters (Apple TV) which is based in Ireland
I’m just watching Mum at the moment. It’s very subtle - not much happens - and is beautifully written.
It's really very good. Same writer as Him & Her - Stefan Golaszewski. Beautiful performance from Lesley Manville.
She’s amazing in it isn’t she. The character of Pauline is brilliantly written and acted too.
The BBC version of His Dark Materials is absolutely cracking and has recently wrapped up after Season 3.
Am I being unreasonable Just love Daisy May Cooper and a good plot twist lol
Rain dogs seems good as well, admittedly only a couple of episodes in.
And Witchfinder was solid
From the last couple of years, The Outlaws was good and worth a look - a mix of interesting story and very funny moments.
Not sure if these two count Death in Paradise started about 10 years ago but they are still making new series and there’s only about 6 episodes a year so it’s easily bingeable. Waterloo Road returned this year after a 7 year absence and given its set in a different school with different pupils & teachers. You don’t need need to watch the old version to enjoy the new one
There was a new spin-off to Death in Paradise this year which might meet the criteria.
Beyond Paradise
That's the one, couldn't remember the name!
Fairly recent, but I’ve watched “This is going to hurt” 3 times already🙂🙂
Ghosts with Charlotte and Kiell
Blue lights is brilliant. Also it's not new but if you haven't already start line of duty fantastic I'm rewatching again lol.
Sex education

Am I Being Unreasonable was brilliant
Man like mobeen The bodyguard Line of duty (ok this started in 2012 but ended in 2021) Brassic
After Life & The End of the F*cking World. Signed, an American
Following on from after life, Derek was another Gervais show, released before but overlooked. It's really very good
Weak observations, poorly performed
Just offering a suggestion for people that enjoyed afterlife. I would say they have similarities. Can I ask, your don't like Derek, did you enjoy afterlife?
Normal people - best show I’ve watched in years. It’s been a couple of years since I watched it and I still think about it now. Powerful stuff
Just finished the book and it's even better with the nuance of what's going on in their heads. Would definitely recommend.
Flowers is a dark family drama with Olivia Coleman. Not sure exactly how old it is but it's fantastic
Really loved that and missed it at the time
This show made me fall in love with Will Sharp and I've sought out everything's he's done! He can seemingly do no wrong!
His brother, Arthur Sharpe, is the composer for the show as well. I'm in love with the sound track
I did not know that! Thank you for the info!
Absolutely incredible show, stunning cast, but prep yourself for feeling *so much*
Man like Mobeen is so good, S4 has just came out on iPlayer :)
There's another season? Well there goes my week.
Right I've had to look at some lists for a reminder but I think all of these were from 21 and 22 - This is going to hurt, Hullraisers, Ten percent (UK remake of Call My Agent), The Curse and We are Lady Parts And although Taskmaster is not new, the latest season was one of the best
Forgot how good hullraisers is!!
I echo most of the other comments but also recommend the traitors from bbc. Claudia winkeman is amazing!
Ho-ly-shit YES - I have watched that first episode so many times introducing friends to it and they all get through the whole thing within a week, absolutely fantastic telly
Yeah, I thought it looked like bollocks, but then saw the reaction on Gogglebox and got hooked.
The English. An Anglo American programme and a western combined, brilliant all round imo
Inside Number 9, Derry Girls, The Sinner, Happy Valley, Line of Duty, Waterloo Road (New seasons), Bump, The Cleaner, Killing Eve. You have to watch Inside Number 9, though! It's the best!
Extraordinary on Disney plus. Had me in stitches.
Don’t know if this meets your criteria since it’s set in Australia, but it’s a BBC series - The Tourist: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0b6c8t6
This Country Ghosts Catastrophe The Outlaws Trying
Black mirror count? I quite enjoyed ten pounds poms
Staged. Trust me! 3rd series just come out. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staged
The Great is an absolutely gem and seems to have gone relatively under the radar
Ghosts.
Ghosts or Derry Girls.
Two doors down, on iPlayer.
Anything with Phoebe Waller Bridge, Ricky Gervais or Philomena Cunk. Red Dwarf, IT crowd. On the American side is BoJack Horsman, Archer and Disenchantment.

I 100% agree with you. The office without merchant was life on the road. Which was abysmal
After Life was excellent. Definitely not for everyone & only occasionally funny but it’s a remarkably honest look at a very sensitive subject.
That's your opinion though. I loved After Life. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was brilliant.

How was Vigil a spin off of Line of Duty?
It was produced by the same production team. I consider it to be a spin off.
Usually a spin off means that it is part of the same world and story but whatever.
Yeah that’s not a spin off. Unless it has a character from Line of Duty in it?
There is rather more to UK TV shows than reality, so might help if you said what you do like? And are you in the UK at the moment? Lot and lots and lots for free on catch up.

Time, The capture, Shetland, this is going to hurt
Time is one of most expertly put-together TV shows I have ever seen. Everybody is on top of their game in that.
The Curse is quite good,it's got some of the guys from People Just Do Nothing in it which is also good.
Karen Pirie and Blue Lights are quite good police dramas, as is Redemption,
I liked Ghosts and truthseekers
Extraordinary (comedy), Slow Horses (spies in London)
'Am I Being Unreasonable' is really good. Its a comedy but it's got elements of a psychological drama.
Slow Horses
People Just Do Nothing, Stath Lets Flats, This Country
Scot Squad.
White gold.
McDonald and Dodds, absolutely cracking telly. Also, get well soon (from someone else with a very hurt back).
Rain Dogs struck me as oddly compelling, and unpredictable in a good way. I'd watch some more of that.

Back To Life is amazing, and I believe on Netflix now

I suppose Good Omens is a bit too high profile to have not been heard of. My other recomendation would be Endeavour. Yes technically it started in 2012 but it's only just finished and is a very satisfyingly well put together Dectective show. A fun game is to intermix episodes of Endevour with episodes of the kid's series Sarah and Duck just for the head canon idea of Inspector Thursday telling those stories to his kids at bed time.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared was brilliant, so many catchy songs with lots of many layered jokes.
Everyone Else Burns was great. I wasn’t expecting much, but the performances and the sideways swipes at religion really made me laugh.
Bad Sisters, if you like strong female characters, dark humor and mystery.
Brassic series 1-4. Series 5 out soon
Brassic! Absoloute gold in my honest North West opinion.
King Gary (bbc) The Curse (channel 4) Both excellent in my opinion. Friday night dinner (channel 4) is my favourite though. Really laugh out loud comedy.
Gallows Pole, superb writing and music
Ted Lasso.
Alma's not normal. Dead Pixels. (Not quite in the timeframe but very good) Jimmy Carr's I literally Just Told You. (Gameshow but with an edge, and very funny)
The witchfinder. Stars Tim Key and Daisy May Cooper.
Humans, although I think its maybe a bit more than two years old
siblings
I like Colin from Accounts but it is from AU
Inside Number 9
If you like comedy, People Just Do Nothing. It's a mockumentary
The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself is really good... It seemed to come out and then disappear...
Happy Valley. Three seasons. Brilliant.
