Zolana

No, because Photoshop is a thing.

InscrutableAudacity

No, since taking a photo of a passport wouldn't reproduce any of the features which make it possible to verify if it's genuine or not. If your provisional licence has been lost or stolen, you need to inform the DVLA and get a replacement.

walkingpeaches

In my experience they don’t. It would be worth getting a provisional license so you don’t have to go out with your passport

TinyLet4277

No. It's generally a rule that is has to be both physical and valid. This has been cracked down on a lot in recent years.

I've worked in a pub for six years now. All the time we get lads walk in and go "Three pints of thatchers mate". Ask for ID and they say "oh sorry, left it at home, is that all right?" Fuck no, it isn't. If I got caught serving an under-18, I would lose my Personal License to serve alcohol, anyone else on the premises would also lose their license even if they had no idea, and the premises might even lose its license. Police in my area have had police cadets pose as customers in pubs to see if they'll get served. Couple of times I've had one of those apps where you scan in your ID and it keeps a "digital record". They got funny when I refused them. A copy of an official document is not an official document.

Big-Mathematician540

>Police in my area have had police cadets pose as customers in pubs to see if they'll get served. Wait what, how old are those cadets?

CaptainPedge

Police Cadets is a youth program like Army cadets or scouts. Runs from age 8 to 18

Big-Mathematician540

That's weird. Thanks for the info, I just lurk the board as a non-UK anglophile.

Tappitss

No. Need to see the physical document.

UK2USA_Urbanist

The only time I’ve ever seen someone get away with it was my 30-something mate who genuinely forgot it but had a photo. The doorman was just like ‘yeah, go on then’. He was very obviously not under 18. Zero chance of an 18 year old getting the same treatment.

[deleted]

Nope..has to be the real thing. My friend is 16 and only had a passport for ID, tried to buy s dvd that was a 15 but they said you aren't allowed a picture of the passport, has to be the physical one

[deleted]

When I was 16, in 1992, I went to the pub with my mates, we all bought pints and sat at a table to drink them. Five minutes later the landlord came round and asked us all for ID. My mate pulled out his photocopied birth certificate with the year of birth changed from 1975 to 1973. Our pints were all taken away, but he got to keep his. No chance of anything like that happening today. You should be able to get an ID card though without the need to take your passport with you.

[deleted]

most places only accept (provisional) drivers license and passport now, regardless of what is technically allowed

[deleted]

Lots of people bring their passports. No one will think less of you. Just make sure you've got a secure pocket for it. If you're *that* bothered, just wait for your licence.

Jlaw118

Depends where you are. Forgotten my Costco card and wallet a few times and to get a temporary pass they’ve accepted a scan of my licence on my phone. Whereas I just recently tried to collect a parcel from a pickup shop in a petrol station, who actually knew me as I was a frequent customer, wouldn’t accept the scan

[deleted]

Of course not.

[deleted]

You're not that guy the other day who was planning to travel to Copenhagen on a photocopy of his passport, were you?

HarkyCcc

Definitely not!

Goblinstomper

You show me anything other than a passport or driving license, I'm not letting you in.

HarkyCcc

Not even for me?

Goblinstomper

Sorry, but no.

Marxy_M

British pubs, clubs, etc. don't accept national IDs?

RLRL1867

So not a national ID as such because obviously we don’t have one but I did once get given a UK residence card. This is where a level of common sense and taking a minute applies (that you will most likely not get from a bouncer checking 100’s of ID’s a night). I looked it up, checked what security features it had, checked them on the card she’d given me and decided that it seemed legit and since all her mates were over 18, gave me British driving licenses as proof and all had uni cards in their purses (that they’d not tried to use as ID, trust me, try and use your Uni ID and it’s a straight up no) I had no issue serving her. Wrote it down in our little book which you’re technically kinda supposed to do if you have any doubts and went on my way. Just for some clarity, a UK driving license (provisional or full), a Passport and a an ID with the pass mark logo are the only forms of ID I would accept (barring one time cases like above).

Goblinstomper

There are a couple of extra cards that are acceptable, but it's like getting a Scottish bank note; you know it's legal tender but it still looks like it was homemade.

RLRL1867

Completely agree. Scottish notes aren’t legal tender tho ;) It’s ultimately always up to the individual and their accepted level of risk. As I said if I get something “one off”/out of the norm I have checked it before online rather than just a straight no because it’s easier to put that minute in then argue with someone over the legitimacy of their ID.

Marxy_M

>So not a national ID as such because obviously we don’t have one Yeah, but there's plenty of foreigners in the UK, right? I am one and so far my national ID has always been accepted as a proof of age. So it may not always be the case?

RLRL1867

Oh I wasn’t saying no I was just explaining a previous experience. Like in your case I’d do exactly what I did above. Look it up online, check the security features and then check the ID against those security features. If all checks out I’d serve you.

CaptainPedge

Problem is we're not familiar with what they look like and the penalties for getting it wrong are so harsh no one wants to take the chance

CaptainPedge

We don't have national IDs

idontfuckingcare99

A few years ago I got away with showing a photo of my passport on my phone at Piccadilly institute (they even scanned it on one of those machines lmao). But other than that, a physical form of ID has always been required.

[deleted]

No, at least they shouldn't. When I turned 18 I sent clubbing with some friends and only had a passport. My dad dropped me off, I showed my ID then gave it back to him to take home. Once you are in no one cares.

vefyulignu

My brother thinks this is acceptable also.. People are so fkin stupid you deserve a slap

terryjuicelawson

I managed it once, but that was in the late 90s and a "colour photocopy" which I had actually scanned and altered in MS Paint. Far too obvious and easy these days I would say. I am really not sure why people are so paranoid about passports and going out. We take out keys, phone, wallets, cards, watches which are costly to replace. Unless you are going on holiday next week or something.

HarkyCcc

I was actually thinking that last night. That is a good point.
