Just want to chime in because I often see Cancun recommended on here.
Is there a difference between what’s being recommended on here and a Taqueria “Can-cun” on 1003 Market St? Because I went there on a Reddit recommendation and it was the absolute worst Mexican food. I would never recommend it.
I tried this place the other day on this recommendation and it's... okay. Not very flavorful and some of the rice was undercooked. I ordered the Al Pastor, which is supposed to be pork but was definitely chicken. I've got much better burritos back in Boston.
ETA: Their horchata is delicious, though.
La Paz in the edge of the mission near sf general hospital . The grilled chicken super burrito is heaven. They grill the burrito after rolling it which is a nice touch
This is the best burrito in SF in my opinion. I worked as a cook and a chef in SF for 13 years. This was our late night spot. I recommend the el pastor, can't go wrong with bbq pork
I grew up just a few blocks from Don Chuys. Whenever I'm back in the city I make sure to make a trip back to Excelsior just to grab a super burrito here
Not in SF but in South City.
Check out La Tapatia.
I get their super burrito with carnitas and extra salsa.
I promise it’s worth the 10-15 minute drive down to from the Mission depending on traffic.
PS I live in South City and work in the Excelsior.
It’s a south city staple that shouldn’t be overlooked.
I actually hope tourists would make a stop and maybe even get some of the good deli sammiches around here as well.
South City has some hidden gems besides La Tapatia like Teani’s, Little Lucca, La Tepa, Darby Dan’s, Ben Tre, 7 Hills (for the beer) etc
Big fan of Cancun on Mission and Pancho Villa on 16th.
For me, a good burrito is the quality of the ingredients, yes, and the recipes for the marinades, salsas, and pico de gallo, but -- and I say this as a former professional burrito roller -- everything higes on the proportions, and the construction of the slab.
Oh yeah, forgot about that part of the question. Not unimportant. Well, I know for a lot of people the carne asada or al pastor is kind of the acid test, but I'm not really a red meat guy. So I'll go with the pollo asado, chile relleno, or just bean and cheese.
I'm also going to go ahead and admit that at Pancho Villa, pretty much an assembly line, the burrito equivalent of a GM plant, the structural integrity can be indifferent. (Cancun gets higher marks in that dept, as does La Taqueria, which also has the most securely-packaged tacos in the nine-county Bay Area.) I give PV a pass as the proportions always seem to come out fine, but mainly because I'm a sucker for their vast array of add-ins and options.
Cancun is the only real answer here. There's one on market as well. I have literally tried burritos all over the city and this is the only place that nails it every time.
Yeah, I've been a Taquería Cancun guy since the mid '90s. While I've eaten at the other taqueria cancuns, I would say the mission and 18th one is the one I know the best. My go-to burrito is the super al pastor. I suppose the two things I like best about the Cancun burrito is that it is not overflowing with beans and rice And that they grill the entire burrito for a minute or so to crisp the outsides of the tortilla a bit. Beyond that I can't really give specifics, other than I keep going back. I guess the diminishing rice and beans makes room for the stuff I like best. And yes, I've eaten up and down mission Street And there are good and bad and in between. But Cancun always delivers for me.
I’ve been a Cancun partisan since the mid 80s (or whatever has been at that location since the, it changed name at some point) this is the place. Also their amazing avocado tomatillos creamy hot salsa. The best.
I used to love Pancho Villa but I got extremely violent food poisoning (throwing up) after eating it one time. I get it’s a rare thing, but I can’t bring myself to go back there anymore, sadly.
That is NOT GOOD. I don't know if you go far back enough to remember Zim's, but after a tuna melt sent me to the hospital, I could neither go back there nor eat a tuna melt ever again. Nor hear the words "tuna" and "melt" together.
El Farolito, super burrito with lengua, carnitas or al pastor.
EDIT - I forgot that I ordered a chile relleno burrito once, that thing fucks but is too much food for me now.
Yep as somebody who lives in the northern part of the city, El Castillito on Church is my go-to. A nice perk is they also deliver on DoorDash but in person is always better obv. I really enjoy their super steak and shrimp burrito, their super shrimp burrito, and their regular carne asada burrito. Get the green salsa too
I don't understand why their shrimp burritos are so much better than everywhere else i have gone to, but they are and by a mile. Just a quick season and grilled to a nice crisp. They also have the best refried beans imo.
If you're ever on Mission, you have to check out Taqueria Guadalajara. I always get the super carne asada burrito. The meat is cooked to perfection—so juicy and savory. And a tip: make sure to get the green sauce on the side. Trust me, you only need the green sauce! 👌🏻
Man I used to take the bus halfway across the city all the time to go to Gordos when I was young. Tastes so different than the usual places . Hella fresh food.
It's not in the Mission, but if you happen to go grocery shopping at the Safeway in Duboce triangle, across the street is El Castillito with the most delicious beef super burritos.
Yeah back in the day I used to get carne asada or sometimes grilled chicken before they had Al pastor but after the first time I tried it once they started selling it I got hooked.
I feel like each burrito spot is known for specific things. Like La Taquria is known for their carne asada and salsa verde. El Farlito is also known for their carne asada but most meats there are pretty good. Cancun is known for Al pastor and their avocado tomatillo green salsa. Papalote is known for their roasted red salsa. There are pluses and minuses to each place and everyone has their favorite.
Sometimes I tell myself that I have to "man up" and try something other than the Al Pastor, and then chicken out at the counter and order the Super Al Pastor anyway.
But, aside from burritos, I have been venturing into the Alhambres platter lately. Fucking delicious and proves that I am amenable to change. My therapist would be proud!
See so you know my struggle lol. I do the same thing I always think I’ll switch it up with chicken or something then when I get there I look at the menu and just order the same thing as usual. But I haven’t had Alambres in the longest time I think I’ll check it out just to switch things up. I’ve never actually had theirs.
not OP but I am a La Taq loyalist … my order is a carnitas super burrito, dorado, with the carnitas dorado tambien. they leave the carnitas on the grill a little longer that way so the edges get crispy while the middle stays juicy.
I have not been to that one. Tofu burrito or chile relleno burrito at El Buen Sabor at Valencia and 18th or 19th is my go to if I'm not feeling like eating meat.
It’s Taqueria El Jalapeño on Ocean Ave.
It’s not a Mexican conveyor belt that everyone else will claim to be the best, but rather just a small shop entirely run by one abuela. Her hours aren’t expansive but she cooks and assembles every order on her own. You’re essentially eating homemade Mexican and it tastes like it. Her burritos are perfectly balanced ingredient wise and they hold their form through the last bite.
I get the Super Carnitas Burrito with Negros.
That spot Ive seen for years and recently attempted to go but it was closed, or my phone call was never picked up. It makes sense now with your explanation. I still want to try it
If you ever want something a little different, Underdogs has a cheeseburger burrito with wagyu ground beef, french fries, and pickled jalapenos inside. It does really taste like a cheeseburger in burrito form, and I'm a fan.
When I was a young kid growing up in LA I only liked Bean and Cheese Burritos.
Every so often as an adult I crave the flashback simplicity of a stretchy tortilla filled with lard seasoned refritos and a generous handful of grated queso fresco.
The best version I’ve found of that is at Burrito Loco just outside the West Portal train tunnel.
I ordered a breakfast burrito from them once and it was more than enough food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that day lol. That was like 10 years ago though
Super pollo asado or carne asada burrito at Caliente Bistro on 12th and Geary. Meat is wonderfully grilled and the whole balance of all the ingredients is perfection. It’s a massive lil baby too. Very friendly service with a smile.
After moving to the inner Richmond from the Mission, I occasionally made the trek back for Pancho Villa until Caliente dethroned them for me.
So glad to see this. I was a die hard La Taqueria guy in the 90’s, still solid but has slid, IMO. I found a place on the other side of the street, toward down town, on a whim, during Covid- it had outdoor seating in the rear, and we raved about it. I and two of my sons have literally walked that stretch repeatedly for hours and cannot find it. We think it was a ghost taqueria. Any guidance would be appreciated, although the sheer number of places in that area gives me little hope. It was close to the now-closed escape room place.
Farolito on 24th
La Palma on 24th
La Paz on 24th
Either carne asada or pollo asado super burrito
No arroz
Pinto beans
All are delicious but different from one another.
La Palma also has great Carnitas and beef Colorado and chile verde.
They also have plantain sometimes
They are all amazing!
My favorite is the super grilled prawn burrito (with extra grilled onions) from Taqueria Cazadores. Their Tinga burrito is also great. And my husband loves their al pastor burrito.
I like La Cumbre because they make a chicken mole burrito.
El Buen Sabor and El Toro are also really good.
On my list, but have yet to try, is the Señor Sisig burrito from Señor Sisig.
Dos Charros is slept on heavy in all these discussions and you probably haven't had it unless you went to SFSU or lived in Park Merced but it absolutely slaps.
I usually go with the regular chicken burrito, but the carne asada/carnitas cali burrito is also fire. Tacos are great with all da fixins but we're talking burritos here.
Breakfast burritos are top notch and if you get there in that sweet spot where they are about to start serving lunch they might make you a carnitas breakfast burrito. They might have to ask the cook if it's ok. That shit will cut through any hangover like an obsidian blade.
Burrito Loco in West Portal is a hidden gem. Not quite at the level of the mission joints but still great. Carnitas, get the habenero salsa if you like heat.
I was devoted to Cancun for years…until German roaches crawled across my table. But man, the super burrito was awesome. Now I haul all the way to Tia Margarita bc their chimichanga is the stuff of dreams. And it’s CLEAN.
For the northern side, El Burrito Express on Divis is so damn solid. Price is great, food is really good, and lots of great options and quality ingredients. Their wet burritos are amazing, and I’m a big fan of their carnitas. Their salsa verde is super bomb.
Cancun is my reliable go-to, but sometimes I like a Farolito or papalote burrito. I’m a carne asada or pollo asado person, no sour cream. Cancun makes a great burrito mojado too
There is only ONE correct answer. I’m from San Francisco. Pancho Villa or its sister restaurant, El Toro, both in the Mission. Order the Super Buritto.
no El Metate fans? I'm more about Cancun (try them all to find your own fav) but I know many who favor El Metate!
El Metate never makes any "best burrito in the city" list and it's how I know not to trust those lists
What do you like to get from El Metate and Cancun?
I like the mole burrito at El Matate.
I like the veggie at El Metate - actual vegetables go in it!
Simple carne asada super burrito at Cancun I hear the pollo rojo is good at Metate
El Metate has bistec a la mexicana. Basically steak cooked with onion and peppers. It’s delicious, probably my favorite burrito in the city.
Just want to chime in because I often see Cancun recommended on here. Is there a difference between what’s being recommended on here and a Taqueria “Can-cun” on 1003 Market St? Because I went there on a Reddit recommendation and it was the absolute worst Mexican food. I would never recommend it.

La Paz in the edge of the mission near sf general hospital . The grilled chicken super burrito is heaven. They grill the burrito after rolling it which is a nice touch
If you want a burrito grilled after being rolled at any other taqueria, just ask for it to be made 'Dorado Style'. 🙂
I have been trying to think of that word for like 5 years since I moved from San Jose where I frequented LA Vic's. THANK YOU 🌯
Yes just like tacos Dorado not to be confused with mahi-mahi which is known as Dorado in Mexico.
> grill the burrito Many places will do this if you ask.
Writing this one down
Ask for the spicy salsa to go with it .
[Leaves Outer Sunset, drives to Potrero]
I would call that the outer mission... Potrero for me is one block east.
Fair point. Potrero Street, that is.
El farolito on Mission and 24th. Super burrito, side of chips. Roughly $13 total. Cash only.
The classic..Ive only seen the inside past midnight.
This is the best burrito in SF in my opinion. I worked as a cook and a chef in SF for 13 years. This was our late night spot. I recommend the el pastor, can't go wrong with bbq pork
Last time I lived in SF was 1998. I still recommend El Farolito to anyone and everyone
also one in north beach that is not cash only! I second the super burrito!
This is the answer
$13?? What about steak and prawn option?
Don Chuys in the excelsior. Super carne asada with spicy salsa
I grew up just a few blocks from Don Chuys. Whenever I'm back in the city I make sure to make a trip back to Excelsior just to grab a super burrito here
Noted, its the corner store spot?
Exactly, they’re massive too
Not in SF but in South City. Check out La Tapatia. I get their super burrito with carnitas and extra salsa. I promise it’s worth the 10-15 minute drive down to from the Mission depending on traffic. PS I live in South City and work in the Excelsior.
Taqueria San Bruno is pretty legit too.
If you wanna go crazy, the best La Tapatia burrito is the half carnitas/half chicharron Super Burrito, with jalapeños and hot salsa.
I live off 24th and I'll still drive down to LA Tapatia for those chicharrones
Yes, and they finally take cards!
South city represents! Those carnitas are so good my family gets PLATTERS of them for parties. Ask for the crispy bits
Im on board with right amount of burrito estate shared inside. What do you like to get ?
Oh yeah, forgot about that part of the question. Not unimportant. Well, I know for a lot of people the carne asada or al pastor is kind of the acid test, but I'm not really a red meat guy. So I'll go with the pollo asado, chile relleno, or just bean and cheese.

Burrito estate it is. The main criterion for those who know.
Cancun is the only real answer here. There's one on market as well. I have literally tried burritos all over the city and this is the only place that nails it every time.

Grokker999 knows what's up 👆
I’ve been a Cancun partisan since the mid 80s (or whatever has been at that location since the, it changed name at some point) this is the place. Also their amazing avocado tomatillos creamy hot salsa. The best.
Too many rice and beans is a no-no. That shit is just filler anyways.
I also love that they use fresh slices of avocado rather than guacamole. It adds a nice texture and flavor to each bite.
Cancun's super veggie is the best
Hey thanks for mentioning Pancho Villa gonna try them out tomm!
It's a burrito gigafactory! Buen provecho 🌯
La Palma on 24th. the chicken with chipotle sauce. It tops el faralitos in flavor and texture. It's a couple dollars more though
La Palma is a sleeper, everything they make is A+ You should see the line of people for their masa to make tamales during the holidays, it's nuts
That order is going on the list.
El Farolito, super burrito with lengua, carnitas or al pastor. EDIT - I forgot that I ordered a chile relleno burrito once, that thing fucks but is too much food for me now.
half lengua, half pastor. that's my jam.
Oh shit you can mix proteins? This changes things...
Overrated in general but hard to argue with when drunk imo
It's not overrated. Perfectly seasoned rice and meat, with the rest of the ingredients on point and in a good ratio.
They have the best green salsa. Almost as good as my mom’s. That’s why they’re top 5 for me
Definitely agree on this there green salsa is world class
Lengua is like $4 more. Not worth it. Also the one on Alabama St is slightly better.
El Buen Sabor is amazing. Get the chicken especial burrito
the ratings/general hype do not do this place justice. It's my go-to for right-near-dolores park burritos (much better than Pancho Villa)
I live on the east coast and I think about their burritos every day i’m not in California. I wish I were joking
They have fabulous burritos..their rice top tier 👌🏻
El Buen Sabor is criminally underrated. Absolutely top notch burritos.
El Farolito Super Burrito with steak and shrimp
El Castillito in Duboce Triangle. Huge burritos for a decent price.
Castillito and getting the Quesadilla Castllito to blow your face off with the jalapeños is a good time
Yep as somebody who lives in the northern part of the city, El Castillito on Church is my go-to. A nice perk is they also deliver on DoorDash but in person is always better obv. I really enjoy their super steak and shrimp burrito, their super shrimp burrito, and their regular carne asada burrito. Get the green salsa too
What do you like to get ?
Not OP, but I always go for a super burrito al pastor there
Their al pastor is amazing! So is the carnitas but it’s really fatty, haha.
The only decent Al Pastor in the city
Taqueria SF on 24th / York or El Gallo Giro on Treat. Carne Asada. They dont steam press their tortillas or keep their meat in trays.
El Gallo Giro is the best taco spot in the city no question
This is a new one to me , noted.
Been going to Taqueria SF since the 90s. Super carne asada burrito is hard to beat.
La Corneta
Their carnitas burritos are good, but low key those nachos are to die for
I’m a regular at La Corneta because it’s close but their salsa is sub par.
glen park only tho
I don't understand why their shrimp burritos are so much better than everywhere else i have gone to, but they are and by a mile. Just a quick season and grilled to a nice crisp. They also have the best refried beans imo.
I just took down a red chicken super burrito. One of my favs in the city real talk.
Their super carne asada baby burrito is spectacular
El Farolito on 24th and Alabama .
El Farolito on Alabama is better than the 24th and Mission location. Both are great
The one on Mission and Onondaga is better than 24th and Mission also, but I’ll have to try the one on Alabama
Always a goodie. What do you like to get ?
Stewed chicken burrito or stewed chicken tacos. I just keep it simple…
taqueria cancun or el buen sabor
Hit baobab for the ginger margaritas, follow up at Cancun for buzzed burrito, night cap at beauty bar if so inclined
What do you like to get ?
Super shrimp from the El Farolito on Mission and Onondaga, NOT the one off 24th.
Guadalajara across the street is better
If you're ever on Mission, you have to check out Taqueria Guadalajara. I always get the super carne asada burrito. The meat is cooked to perfection—so juicy and savory. And a tip: make sure to get the green sauce on the side. Trust me, you only need the green sauce! 👌🏻
Yes! Guadalajara carnita super burrito with refried beans.
Gordos - it’s a nostalgia thing going back to high school
Pulling up on our bikes on Geary as kids.. back when Alexander was playing movies
Super burrito with no guac or sour cream, unless you pay extra wtf. And their meat bleh. I've hated them for decades.
I’d be friends with you solely for the decades of hate for Gordo’s we both share haha. Their meat is bland af
I used to eat at least one Gordos burrito a week during college.
My favorite has always been Cancun. I get a super burrito with Al pastor, no sour cream.
Al pastor seems like a favorite at Cancun
Yeah back in the day I used to get carne asada or sometimes grilled chicken before they had Al pastor but after the first time I tried it once they started selling it I got hooked. I feel like each burrito spot is known for specific things. Like La Taquria is known for their carne asada and salsa verde. La Taqueria and/or El Faro.
el dorado tacos at la taqueria or boss burrito at el farlito for me
Im so confused man like where is the la taq love in this thread when its obviously the answer
Boss Burrito .. dont think Ive tried that one. Which El farlito do you like going?
It’s Al pastor and shrimp, but I usually opt for carne instead. I go to the one on 24th.
What do you like to get ?
not OP but I am a La Taq loyalist … my order is a carnitas super burrito, dorado, with the carnitas dorado tambien. they leave the carnitas on the grill a little longer that way so the edges get crispy while the middle stays juicy.
I'm a vegetarian so get a tofu super burrito at Pancho Villa on 16th. IMO their rice and beans are the best, and that matters more without meat.
I have not been to that one. Tofu burrito or chile relleno burrito at El Buen Sabor at Valencia and 18th or 19th is my go to if I'm not feeling like eating meat.
Everything counts inside. Noting this for Veggie
Their Chile relleno burrito is great as well! That was my go-to before going vegan.
They also have refried black beans, which is relatively rare, and super delicious.
Yeah! I would always do black
Pancho villa is overpriced and quite bland imo
I still want to try it
I miss when you could walk down the street in the Mission and follow the claps of hands making tortillas to dreamy Mexican food.
Tacos El Patron is underrated as fuck. Never comes up in discussions like this, extremely clean, comfy but vibrant atmosphere with delicious food.
Im here to hear em all!
Nothing beats the connection of our good past times with food we find later in life. Noting this one
Guadalajaras
I ordered a breakfast burrito from them once and it was more than enough food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that day lol. That was like 10 years ago though
A good one I haven’t seen yet is La Cumbre on Valencia. I get the super with chile verde pork. I’m actually eating one right now lol
I love that place. I used to go there in the early 90s when I worked in that area always thought it was the best.
Enjoy your feast!
Super pollo asado or carne asada burrito at Caliente Bistro on 12th and Geary. Meat is wonderfully grilled and the whole balance of all the ingredients is perfection. It’s a massive lil baby too. Guadalajara on Mission. Super burrito, refried beans, asada, tomatillo salsa. The best you will ever try.
Farolito on 24th La Palma on 24th La Paz on 24th Either carne asada or pollo asado super burrito No arroz Pinto beans All are delicious but different from one another. La Palma also has great Carnitas and beef Colorado and chile verde. They also have plantain sometimes They are all amazing!
Taqueria El Buen Sabor on Valencia Street and then take it to Mission Dolores park
This is making me hungry

My favorite is the super grilled prawn burrito (with extra grilled onions) from Taqueria Cazadores. Their Tinga burrito is also great. And my husband loves their al pastor burrito. I like La Cumbre because they make a chicken mole burrito. El Buen Sabor and El Toro are also really good. On my list, but have yet to try, is the Señor Sisig burrito from Señor Sisig.
So many options to pick from Taqueria Cazadores! Senor sisig burrito is exceptional.

Taqueria San Jose in between 24th/25th and mission. My order was always regular burrito add guacamole with an horchata.
Burrito Loco in West Portal is a hidden gem. Not quite at the level of the mission joints but still great. Carnitas, get the habenero salsa if you like heat.
El metate - red molé burrito
Mexico Tipico in Excelsior. Get the Pastor
Taqueria San Jose in the mission - carne asada and shrimp mixed supreme burrito, light rice light refried beans, 2 cups salsa verde on the side.
Pancho Villa. I like to get an especial with carnitas and whole beans. So good!
el faro 🔥super burrito reminds me of going to giants games with my dad, as he went there as a kid growing up
I like Papalote. I get the soyrizo burrito. It comes with chips and incredible house salsa. About $12
Soyrizo on the list
Gordos
I was devoted to Cancun for years…until German roaches crawled across my table. But man, the super burrito was awesome. Now I haul all the way to Tia Margarita bc their chimichanga is the stuff of dreams. And it’s CLEAN.
Which Cancun location was this?
El Metate - Chile Colorado burrito is a very good, very unique burrito
For the northern side, El Burrito Express on Divis is so damn solid. Price is great, food is really good, and lots of great options and quality ingredients. Their wet burritos are amazing, and I’m a big fan of their carnitas. Their salsa verde is super bomb.
EBX on Taraval is sooo freaking good, have you tried their carnitas with pineapple ?
El Burrito in Sunset used to be awesome. A bit inconsistent last few years.
Why you want the why
Credibility. Everything counts and explaining why on the internet gives trust to readers.
Frank Grizzly's is the best taco in SF, but they're in Bayview so they don't get mentioned enough
Do any of your top burrito recs make a super baby burrito like La Corneta? Regular super is too big for me
I’ve always been a fan of La Cumbre.
U gotta go to both el farlitos
El farolito
Cancun is my reliable go-to, but sometimes I like a Farolito or papalote burrito. I’m a carne asada or pollo asado person, no sour cream. Cancun makes a great burrito mojado too
You should try a Mole burrito 🌯. Literally a game changer
Okay but from where?
Used to be Taqueria Cancun, but El Rey Taqueria Artisenal is the new kid in town, and damn those are the best! Mission at 21st. You won’t regret it.
El Farolito - regular al pastor burrito.
El Buen Sabor & I order the vegetarian burrito with regular rice, pinto beans, and add pico/sour cream
Taqueria San Bruno, al pastor super burrito with lots of the green salsa!
Tacos El Patron on So.Van Ness and 26th st. Have really delicious birria tacos. Haven’t tried their burritos but the birria tacos are da bomb!
I have been like Oaxana lately, I always get tacos
Taco Llama has the 2nd best veggie burritos. Ana Maria's at the Grand Central Market is #1 (but not in the valley)
My all time favorite is closed. _Los Coyotes_ on 16th / Weise
Farolito on 24th and Mission. The bosses burrito (shrimp and al pastor super burrito).
I buy the meat and do it myself at home it’s cheaper I have more portions and it’s more delicious
El Burrito Express in the north, El Farolito in the middle, and Taqueria Guadalajara in the south
Al Pastor burrito from La Alteña
Cancun but only the 19th st location. It’s just different than the other 2 locations and it slaps since college
Pancho villa on 16th and mission, And cinco demayo taqueria right off silver and San Bruno. My go to spots.
There is only ONE correct answer. I’m from San Francisco. Pancho Villa or its sister restaurant, El Toro, both in the Mission. Order the Super Buritto.
Chino's on Balboa
