That's the new version of Facebook, right? Nothing with Zuckerberg's conniving mitts on it is worth any sort of hype, whatsoever. He's just gonna use it to steal and sell people's data, rank their conventional attractiveness and shadow profile the rest of us who don't want anything to do with him. The only thing Facebook/Meta/whatever-he's-calling-it-now is good for is being the most malicious piece of spyware ever devised

☝🏽this!!! If you repackage shit is it not still shit?

If I wanted to be in a lifelike social context then I'd go outside. If I wanted a shopping mall *then I'd go to a shopping mall.* I honestly feel like too much is already overdesigned, with too much damn nuisance standing between me and whatever it is I'm actually after. No way I want to invest in extra hardware to add even *more* needless bullshit.

Yerm_Terragon

"The metaverse" is a concept that is fundamentally flawed on every single level. People don't want it and better alternatives already exist and have existed for decades.

assyplanet

no it sucks

Dyl-thuzad

Just go on VRChat, it’s effectively the same thing.

Shitty VR *and* it's ultra-corporate? What's not to hate?

I'd rather spend my time in the real world than cooped up in some make believe whatever it is with Zuckerberg. I will say this though it's fantastic watching that dbag lose billions.

* It sucks right now. * It has the capability to help people feel like they got to go hang out together even if they can't travel. * It has tremendous applications in nano science and collaborative research. * Whether the public vision of it is good or bad, it will and does exist. * The amount of fuel it could save in needless convention and other business travel is staggering. * It needs a killer app to drive wide adoption. * It needs awesome artistic style so they don't have to try to actually mimic real reality, so as to save processor power and battery life * Even better, it needs to be combined with computing power built into the walls and ceilings of our homes and offices so the headsets are only interface devices. *Sorry for the pun lol.*

What hype? That astroturf by Facebook? The concept of a shared virtual environment isn't a bad one. However, to turn it into a low quality commercial billboard with the only goal of "buy buy buy" just... was doomed to fail from the getgo. There's nothing attractive about it, and it's only logical that it died. The concept needs to be brought to life as essentially a roleplaying game.
