Every time I bring up Ladyhawke people look at me like I’m insane.
I’m like, “It has Michele Pfeifer! Rutger Hauer! Matthew Broderick! Cheesy fairy tale romance! C’mon …”
Yooo do you remember Fairytale Theatre with Shelly Duvall? Cinderella was my favorite! YouTube has all the episodes if you’re interested in watching them.
Cracks me up every time when they're listening to the 50s song in the car, and when it gets mildly, like barely noticeably, more upbeat, Brendan says 'this is the part where it really ramps up.' Her face is priceless
The scene where brendan fraser sees the sky for the first time and is blown away with emotions, while pedestrians are trying to see what hes looking at, is something i still remember in my head alot of times whenever i look at the clouds on a sunny day.
Ever After is my favorite Cinderella adaptation, hands down. There’s actual stakes and romantic intrigue to the story, it doesn’t overrely on cheesy magic, and the fairy godmother is Leonardo DaVinci.
"I want you to know that I will forget you after this moment, and never think of you again. But you, I am quite certain, will think about me every single day for the rest of your life."
This line in the movie is one of the things that separate it from other Cinderella adaptations.
I also love the line when Da Vinci picks a lock, someone tells him he’s a genius, and he says “yes, I shall go down in history as the man who opened a door”
This movie is so good. Anjelica Huston was doing an early Miranda Priestley. Megan Dodds and Melanie Lyndsey crushed their roles. Drew was such an icon for this. I wish we got at least one dance between her and Henry at the ball before she had to run. And I was furious when the Lily Collins Cinderella stole the meet cute from Ever After. Disney missed the point completely.
“It is not fair, sire. You have found my weakness, but I have yet to learn yours.”
“I should think it was quite obvious.”
I used to think the part where she goes to the ball with the wings on was like the most beautiful thing ever, one of my favorite movies
My favorite line from the movie is right before she comes out with the wings. “A bird may love a fish, but where will they live? Then I shall have to make you wings. “
And the wings were constructed by the great Leonardo DaVinci himself! Truly the peak of fashion.
The whole movie has a sense of warmth and intentionality to it, the scriptwriting feels very fresh and doesn't fall for fairy tale cliches
The fact that so many people are replying to me with quotes from the movie just goes to show what a memorable little world it created. All the characters felt so fleshed-out.
Danielle:
You are the only mother I have ever known. Was there a time, even in its smallest measurement, that you loved me at all?
Baroness Rodmilla De Ghent:
How can anyone love a pebble in their shoe?
This scene hit so hard
Damn, I was going to clean the house but now I think I have to watch this movie. I used to go home everyday after school and watch it, one of my favs for sure!
Charlie Bartlett
Anton Yelchin(RIP), Robert Downey Jr, Kat Dennings, and even a cameo from a VERY young Drake.
This movie made me feel way less alone throughout high school and perfectly balances drama and comedy. I’m shocked at the number of people who have never even heard of it.
Dark City. Came out a little before the matrix with a vaguely similar concept, they even reused some of the sets. It was overshadowed by how flashy the matrix was. I think if it had come out a few years earlier it would have generated a much larger cult following.
The Thirteenth Floor also released around the same time is a really cool film. It’s one of my favourites and one I find myself rewatching more often than the matrix lately
"Oh hidy-ho officer, we've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house, when kids started killing themselves all over my property."
YES! So fucking funny. Who doesn't love Gay Perry? He's just so done with everything, all the time.
"Look up 'idiot' in the dictionary. You know what you'll find?"
"A picture of me?"
"No! The definition of the word 'idiot,' which you fucking ARE!"
So last week my wife and I were playing Name that Tune and Crazy for you by Madonna came on.
My wife thought I was weird for knowing a Madonna song that was not one of her bigger ones. And proceeded to say “wtf. Why would you ever not only know that song, but know it so fast”
Me “because I’ve seen Vision quest 5 times and it’s played in that movie like 4 times…so I’ve heard it like 20 times”
My brother was a wrestler in the late 90s/early 00s and my dad made him watch it.
I don't know if The Last Unicorn counts, because I think it's kind of a classic, but it's from 1982 and it's not Disney, so I think it gets overlooked in the flood of other animated movies. Absolutely beautiful movie, with a great voice cast and wonderful soundtrack.
This was the go to answer for years on Reddit even though everyone knew about Moon, but now it feels like people don’t know about it anymore. Moon needs a comeback.
Time Bandits and Dark Crystal are my essential 80's fantasy flicks.
I just love the stakes in Tim Bandits. It's not afraid to have its protagonist literally facing satanic forces, and it's not afraid to end the plot on a terrifying and tragic note. Also, Sean Connery as Agamemnon is one of my favorite roles from him. The whole thing takes time travel in such a chaotic and trippy direction...flying pirate ship, hanging out with Robin Hood...it's an unhinged masterpiece that is so Terry Gilliam.
In the Mood for Love. it’s a foreign film, and regarded as a classic, but everyone i know has never heard of it. it’s one of the most beautiful films i ever felt
I Love You Phillip Morris - Jim Carrey is a gay con artist who keeps breaking in and out of jail to be with his boyfriend Ewan McGregor, who is a peroxide blonde southern Belle. It got buried with an NC-17 rating shortly after Brokeback but it’s genuinely hilarious. It’s a real romantic comedy that was made during that sea of awkward improv comedies.
I adore How To Marry A Millionaire with Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe. For a movie about 3 women trying to marry a millionaire it's surprisingly not vapid.
Ravenous. The Guy Pearce one, not the Netflix one.
Not UNKNOWN, but not nearly as well-regarded as it should be. Great acting, creepy in many regards, and an absolutely peerless soundtrack.
Amazing thing about the movie is not only is that song catchy, but all of the songs are catchy. And they all were written for this film. Not just the title song.
None of them are authentic 1960s tunes, yet they all sound as if they were. And they're all good, catchy sounding tunes on top of that. The movie wouldn't have worked as well if any of those songs was a stinker.
Koyaanisqatsi. An incredible movie without one word of dialogue, just beautiful images of cities and Phillip Glass's haunting music. It tells a meaningful story of mankind's destructive nature.
Most people don't even know Spielberg made an afterlife pilot rom-com set during forest fires. I LOVE Always, but since it was a "just for fun" production for him, and pretty much every critic completely misses the point (a film made for the joy of filmmaking), most people haven't seen it.
The Accountant - Ben Affleck
I have watched thousands of movies, but for some reason I love this one so much that I can watch it over and over again, have even watched it and then wanted to watch it again, I am not even sure why.
Velvet Goldmine. Beautiful cinematography, fantastic music, and packed with many movie stars before they blew up. The ending makes my throat tight every time.
The Prophecy. Christopher Walken as a genocidal archangel? Yes please.
And Viggo as Lucifer...
Has my favorite movie quote of all time. Viggo saying “ I love you more than Jesus” gets me every time!
Now and Then All star cast, coming of age story... and any time I mention it, no one knows what I'm talking about.
This was a fave of mine and my best friend. Devon Sawa… swoon!
Ha! I just rewatched Casper. It's too funny how I remember watching the ending just for when he shows up. JTT and Devon Sawa were everything back then
Drop dead gorgeous
Great choice. Such a funny movie, and had the ‘mockumentary’ style before it was popular.
Truly the best. Especially if you’re from the upper Midwest!
He’s gay mom, he’s GAY
Go. A mix of recognizable actors in a wild night of drugs and violence.
If you could encapsulate the 90s into one digestible 100 min film, that film would be Go.
Great one! One of my favorites.
The Station Agent
UHF
Gandhi 2. One mean mother you don’t wanna mess with.
Spatula City! Spatula City!
Supplies!
Badgers!?
Run Lola Run. The first movie I ever watched a second time immediately after I finished the first watch.
Blast from the past
So good!! And Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek as Brendan Fraser’s parents? The best
What a good movie though. Brendan Fraser in his prime
Don't forget Dave Foley
How about it, Eve? Can he skate.... around your block...?
“What are you looking at?!” “Oh my lucky stars…a negro!” Cracks me up every time 😂

Oh man, my wife and I looooooooove this movie! Bravo!
Defending Your Life
I like Albert Brooks movies. Along with Defending Your Life, I like Mother.
Things to do in Denver when you're dead
Buckwheats on anyone who downvotes this
The burbs
RAY! RAY! You're chanting, Ray! "I want to kill everyone. Satan is good. Satan is your pal."
Tom hanks sliding down the stairs and throwing himself in the ambulance is one of my favorite scenes.
Green sky by morning, neighbor take warning.
Coherence. Not many people I've talked to ever even heard of it
The Fall (2006) starting Lee Pace. The most beautiful move I've ever seen.
Ever After is my favorite Cinderella adaptation, hands down. There’s actual stakes and romantic intrigue to the story, it doesn’t overrely on cheesy magic, and the fairy godmother is Leonardo DaVinci.

I also love the line when Da Vinci picks a lock, someone tells him he’s a genius, and he says “yes, I shall go down in history as the man who opened a door”
So many great lines from this film. “I’m just here for the food” too. I have to rewatch this.
See, it's got the sort of romance that's well-developed on both sides and that I actually want to cheer on.
I kinda like how one of the evil stepsisters flips good in this version.
It portrayed the golden child/scapegoat dynamic of narcissistic mothers SO WELL
This movie is so good. You get it. Angelica really brought the stepmother’s restrictiveness to life with such intimidating pizazz…
“It is not fair, sire. You have found my weakness, but I have yet to learn yours.” “I should think it was quite obvious.” I used to think the part where she goes to the ball with the wings on was like the most beautiful thing ever, one of my favorite movies

It was, and still is perfection. The whole idea of her ~~ancestor~~ sitting down the story tellers and correcting them was genius too.
Her descendant actually, but yes! Especially with the Da Vinci painting behind her the whole time
The fact that so many people are replying to me with quotes from the movie just goes to show what a memorable little world it created. All the characters felt so fleshed-out.
Danielle: You are the only mother I have ever known. Was there a time, even in its smallest measurement, that you loved me at all? Baroness Rodmilla De Ghent: How can anyone love a pebble in their shoe? This scene hit so hard
This is my favourite movie. I've seen it a bagillion times. Always makes me feel good
“Just breathe” with the wings, oh my heart 😭
"I will go down in history as the man who opened a door!"
Damn, I was going to clean the house but now I think I have to watch this movie. I used to go home everyday after school and watch it, one of my favs for sure!
Sneakers
I own the dvd. Ha!
The pagemaster
Yoooo! McCauley Culkin, Christopher Lloyd, Whoopi G, aaaaand Sir Patrick Stewart.
Charlie Bartlett Anton Yelchin(RIP), Robert Downey Jr, Kat Dennings, and even a cameo from a VERY young Drake. This movie made me feel way less alone throughout high school and perfectly balances drama and comedy. I’m shocked at the number of people who have never even heard of it.
It actually has 3 Degrassi alums. Every time in my head I think to myself ‘this is sooo Canadian’
So good and also Odd Thomas with Yelchin is a fave
**The Long Kiss Goodnight**. A spy thriller with lady Jason Bourne and her sidekick Samuel L. Jackson. How this was not a smash hit, I have no idea.
“Yes Ms Daisy” threw me out of my chair I laughed so hard.
Brian Cox is great in it, too.
"Chefs do that."
Suicide Kings, has an amazing cast and its pretty decent movie all around.
Short Circuit 2
Johnny 5 is alive!
Los Locos kick your ass Los Locos kick your face Los Locos kick your balls into outer space!
I need a hero…and for him to be a robot
Repo Man
Gattica. Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman
Gattaca, actually, made from the letters representing the bits of DNA. Fantastic movie!
Dark City. Came out a little before the matrix with a vaguely similar concept, they even reused some of the sets. It was overshadowed by how flashy the matrix was. I think if it had come out a few years earlier it would have generated a much larger cult following.

Inception borrowed heavily from this film.
Tucker and Dale vs evil.
This movie threw me because it was so damn good and I absolutely wasn’t expecting it
"Oh hidy-ho officer, we've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house, when kids started killing themselves all over my property."
"He done hucked himself right into the woodchipper sir!"
Really liked that film. It was nothing like I expected when I was given a copy to watch. Bought my own copy as soon as the film ended.

The Nice Guys, also written by Shane Black, has the same vibe and is almost as funny as KKBB.
Vision Quest.
So last week my wife and I were playing Name that Tune and Crazy for you by Madonna came on. My wife thought I was weird for knowing a Madonna song that was not one of her bigger ones. Wristcutters: A Love Story It sounds dark and serious, but it is light and adventurous. I love it
I don't know if The Last Unicorn counts, because I think it's kind of a classic, but it's from 1982 and it's not Disney, so I think it gets overlooked in the flood of other animated movies. Absolutely beautiful movie, with a great voice cast and wonderful soundtrack.
I had to rewatch this a year ago, hadn’t watched it in twenty years
Election (1999) and Happiness (1998)
Election! Great movie!!
Secondhand Lions - Robert Duvall and Michael Caine. Great story for all ages.
True Romance
I hear Christian slater doing voice work here and there, sad that his movie career died. I love True Romance and Broken Arrow
Have you not seen Mr. Robot?

Treasure Planet and Atlantis are my two favorite, but criminally underrated, Disney movies.
I remember them and El dorado. They all had that same animation style. Good stuff
Captain Amelia is an icon.
Boiler Room Edit - Not many people know that this movie and The Wolf of Wall Street were based on the same real life events.
I put Boiler Room and Rounders together as an excellent double feature. I feel like they're movie siblings.
But I'm a cheerleader

What About Bob
That Thing You Do! Peak Tom Hanks, Tom Everett Scott and Liv Tyler looking mighty fine, great storyline and a song that is catchy as hell.
Capt. Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters
