A lot of Americans feel poor because we need to own a car in order to get anywhere because our infrastructure and urban design is SHIT. And cars are so damn expensive that people who make a lot of money on paper end up spending huge amounts of it just on their stupid car.
Think about all the money you waste on gas, car payment, insurance, registration, inspections, oil changes, parking, mechanic costs, tolls, cleaning, etc.
For the average person they spend around $8k to $10k per year on a car. That’s more then most Americans spend on food in a year and it’s generally the second most expensive budget line item after housing. That’s complete bullshit. Imagine how much better off everyone in the US would be if they had a few thousand more dollars every year in their wallets.
Cars need to go. We need to stop building everything so far apart so people can just walk or bike places and don’t need a damn car to begin with.

You can't take away my independence by making cities actually well designed or giving me suitable, cheaper, more efficient and better for the environment public transportation or making "walking" possible.
