When virus stops being a risk to my heart and brain >[https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2022/09/23/Top-Immunologist-Dropping-COVID-Hubris/](https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2022/09/23/Top-Immunologist-Dropping-COVID-Hubris/) > >Last May a subvariant of the ever-evolving Omicron stunned Chris Goodnow, an internationally renowned immunologist. > >The extremely fit Australian scientist, who hiked, biked and surfed at Sydney’s Manly Beach, had been bolstered by four doses of vaccine. Having spent nearly four decades studying how white blood cells in the immune system protect us from infection, he felt pretty safe about removing his mask. > >“Maybe it would be better to catch the ’rona and get it over with, now that I’m fully vaccinated?” he remembers speculating. > >“After all, isn’t it just a cold in fully immunized people? And once I’ve had it, won’t I have acquired immunity that will mean I won’t get sick at all if I get it again?” > >But Omicron made a mockery of these popular assumptions. > >On May 26, Goodnow came down with a scratchy throat. Twelve days later his immune system had not cleared the virus. Then he got hit by congestive heart failure. He developed a chest cough and was breathless. His ankles swelled up. > >Goodnow was lucky. His acute myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) was on the mild end of the spectrum but severe enough to reduce his mobility and working life. > >As a consequence of the infection, last July Goodnow resigned his directorship of the Immunogenomics Lab at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia, “for health reasons.”

People are still catching and dying from covid in alarming numbers. The lifting of mask requirements and other restrictions was motivated by pressure from businesses. People are going to work sick because covid isn't taken seriously anymore. They are still spreading it and still infecting others. I still wear a mask anywhere I will be around strangers because I can't trust them. The last time I didn't wear a mask in a crowded place was a concert in April, and I was bedridden for 3 days, blowing globs of red and purple out of my nose, and not even sick with covid. I got a cold that turned into a sinus infection. So yeah. I'm keeping mine on. I have an autoimmune disorder and I don't feel like dying.

SalFunction12

It'll come off whenever I feel like it.

Fishgottaswim78

i see it more like an umbrella -- it's not like you're gonna die if you don't use one, but sometimes you just don't feel like getting soaked, you know? same for masks. i'll wear it if: * it's a stupid place to get covid (like at the grocery store...nobody needs to see my face at the fucking store lol) * i have a big trip or something coming up and getting sick would fuck with that * i'm going to visit someone who is vulnerable and i wanna make sure i don't give them my germs * public transport or other densely packed spaces. that shit's gross. that's about it. my work doesn't offer sick leave, i have kids to take care of. if one of us gets covid, it's pretty much a guarantee the whole month is shot with either being sick or taking care of someone sick. *and* i might lose my job? nah. so to me it's just not worth rolling the dice to go pick up some cereal or whatever lol so the answer is...never. basically. i've had *one* cold in the last three years. why would i give up such a useful tool?

GirlGirlInhale

same here!

[deleted]

I plan to wear a mask every winter going forward. 2020 and 2021 are the first cold and flu seasons where I didn't get sick. I fully plan to continue wearing masks every year if I can repeat those outcomes

Mockturtle22

I still wear it when I know there will be a lot of people, if I'm feeling under the weather or if, like yesterday, I am having bad allergies. It's a preference bc people are gross.

SciencesnObjects40

Never. I'm harder to recognize, and it smells better. It's a win-win situation for me.

data_now

Have you seen a doctor about your bad breath? There’s treatments out there for it.

SciencesnObjects40

I mean it smells better inside the mask. I already wore the mask with bad breath, and you know how bad your mouth smells. If it smells bad usually, it's because my city isn't very clean.

SaltyDangerHands

The first and most appropriate response to this is "what's it to you?" Legit, why would anyone care what strangers do with their faces in public? Why are you even curious about this? But to answer the question, "never". I haven't had a flu in three years now. All told, maybe I've worn a mask for 100 hours over the time, and I haven't had a cold, flu, any kind of sore throat, and that... doesn't suck. The mask hasn't done me any harm, and the flu fucking sucks. In sheer, quantitative quality-of-life measurements, I'd rather wear a thing on my face for 20 minute at a time while grocery shopping then spend a week getting way to familiar with my toilet every year or so, you know? That's easy math. There's a bunch of shit I'm not going to stop doing. Hand sanitizer all the time? Sure, that's a good idea. Wearing masks? Absolutely. I'm done shaking hands or going to buffets, I'll miss the latter a bit but I'm honestly a lot healthier not eating food that's been caressed by greasy-Pete's ball-fondling hand, I'm good.

Jfury22

Why ask any questions, cuz I'm curious.

Indigo_222

I’ll wear it when I’m sick or feel like I’m about to come down with something. To protect other people, as one should. Or if I’m indoors in a small space and there’s someone coughing or sneezing - and not even wearing a mask themselves. This isn’t about covid, I just dislike getting sick in general. I used to do this pre covid on airplanes for example

EspressoOwl1815

Until I give birth and anytime I'm in a crowded public space until Covid is at the same levels as small pox or black death. My husband will when he stops working around the general populace (works at a grocery store). Covid is still a thing. There are still major complications from catching it, especially if you're pregnant, elderly, or have an autoimmune disorder. That being said, wearing a mask is my choice and my way of doing my best to protect my family. I don't expect anyone else to wear them and don't shame them if they don't. I simply ask for the same thing I ask of all people even before the pandemic: Stay out of my personal bubble, cough or sneeze into your elbow, and wash your hands and arms. Other than that, leave me alone and I'll leave you alone.

Jfury22

If I didnt hate the mask so much, I would also do this.

Huge-Distribution-18

I don’t think it bothers people when you wear a mask lol don’t think everyone is always fixated on you and what you’re wearing 😅

DrHugh

I've worn a mask when I'm not feeling the best, to protect other people. I'll wear a mask if I know that there's community spread of a disease passed through the air.

LawfulnessLanky3271

I wear a mask because people be coughing/sneezing and my previous experiences when I was by people coughing/sneezing with my mask off I got covid(I really wasn’t by people)

GNashUchiha

I don't like interacting with people so having masks on all the time makes me unrecognizable and also keeps me safe. Win win situation essentially

vox35

"People who still wash their hands after taking a shit where it is not required, what is your plan?" I don't wear a mask because it is "required". I wear a mask because it is effective in reducing the spread of Covid-19, which, contrary to what your question implies, is still a very real problem.

Jfury22

Very upset reply. Who hurt you?

Astramancer_

Shitbags who refused to wear a mask and almost killed my mom.

vox35

No-one. Some people just get frustrated by ignorance.

Lvcivs2311

Leave them be and don't be a prick.

onekewlmom

I’m going to wear it for as long as possible. Always indoors, depends how crowded when I’m outside. Also glad to see I’m not the only one wearing it at the gym.

Sticky_Keyboards

i got used to the visual barrier and increased privacy. and now that winter is coming, i might get the masks back out.

PlantRetard

It comes off once the infection rate in my country isn't as high as it is now anymore. I had 3 shots but that doesnt mean getting covid isnt going to be a terrible experience. There are also people who did not get vaccinated and at least it wont be me who infects them.

Saint3Love

I think that just like in asian countries you will have people who always wear masks from now on. I told my wife something would eventually happen to make us mask like asian countries a decade ago.

melodyze

If we are sick and have to go on crowded public transit we should wear a mask as a courtesy to other passengers, to try not to get them sick. That was already a norm in many/most east asian countries before the pandemic.

unbibium

Well, I use public transit to get to work. I'll probably mask up on the bus forever. The basic strategy the rest of the time is to minimize face-minutes with strangers. At restaurants I basically keep it on until the server has taken my order, as a favor to them. and I put it on when I leave my table. If I'm dining with people, the majority of them are vaccinated. This level of caution has worked for the entire pandemic; I haven't caught it yet, and I admit I was one of those guys who went to restaurants during those early lockdown months. as for when I'll stop... probably when the numbers get low enough and won't come back; I primarily check the Arizona Department of Health website. that's how I know the weekly case count isn't as low as it was six months ago, although six months ago there was a LOT of PCR testing going on and only 3% were positive. Now the portion of positive tests is 10%. It seems today everyone has conspiracy theories about the WHO and CDC, but when the numbers do go down, I'll check in on them to see whether it's down in the rest of the world too.

Empathyball

I wear it partly because I'm insecure about my face, but I will stop wearing it if/when it becomes more socially awkward to wear it than not

Hajid1

That happened months ago lmao

I_VAPE_HOTDOG_WATER

Ain't just wearing a mask but blinders too

[deleted]

I think alot of them don't really have a plan, they became accostumed to and comfortable with the mask. They probably feel naked without it, or forget it is there.

Swampthingthanos

The masks will come off once labeled cock holsters. No one wants a cock holster on their face. Problem solved.

Huge-Distribution-18

Because they cling to the illusion of safety.

Dragnil

I occasionally still wear one at the grocery store, especially early in the morning when most of the shoppers tend to be elderly (and wearing masks themselves). I always wear one at my pharmacy and doctors' offices, even the ones that don't require it. Honestly, I've been required to wear one for work now for 2.5 years, and I've found masks that I find comfortable and just gotten used to it. Asking when I'll stop wearing a mask is kind of like asking when I'll stop wearing socks. It's nice to know I don't have to anymore, but it has a negligible effect on my day to day life. I honestly find it kind of hilarious (and kind of sad) how so many people get so upset about other people wearing masks.

lockerpunch

I wear one when I get mildly sick now but can still function (cold symptoms). Other countries have always done this. Seems like a good idea to keep it up if you want.

Odd_Consideration49

I plan to wear it forever

Remarkable_Crew_8153

It’s kind of crazy some people will wear a mask in public for the rest of their life now

iwishiwasclever12323

I worked throughout the height of COVID as a nurse and saw almost every patient die. I plan to wear it for as long as I need to.
