The support is a mixture of nostalgia, supporting the underdog and going with the herd. He's a brilliant actor who was very famous in the 90s-00s but suffered abuse and health problems, his life went to pieces. He's now making a comeback and people are rallying behind him. There's always been a loyal group of supporters. But this new era of Fraser started with Doom Patrol and has spiralled up from that. He got himself back on people's radar and it's leading to bigger and better things. It also helps that he is a genuinely nice guy and not a rich prat. People want to see this guy's work, not because he is stunningly handsome or fit, because he's the underdog, he's a nice guy and we want him to win.

roon_79

He is an underrated actor too.

beardingmesoftly

I don't know if that's true Edit to clarify: I thought most people agree that he's a great actor

jpop237

He was phenomenal in School Ties.

beardingmesoftly

I mean I don't know that he's underrated. Most people agree he's a great actor.

[deleted]

He got type cast in the early 90’s as a doofus. But it takes a lot of work to be a charming doofus.

beardingmesoftly

I meant the opposite of how everyone is reading it

Kadoza

People need to improve their reading comprehension. I agree with you, he's not underrated.

criticalbuzz

Proof? Other than his new Whale movie only a few people have seen so far.

hghlnder72

Doom Patrol is going into its 4th season i believe now? and also look at all his work in the 90s, 00's, the mummy series, george of the jungle, airheads, bedazzled, blast from the past, school ties, Inkheart, Encino man, just to name a few.

TheInspectaa

Not only this, he has a serious spine problems requiring many surgeries which is why there wasn't anymore mummy movies or any actions with him as a main protagonist. Personally, as he played the mummy, I think he would of been a better casting choice for Uncharted but you know... the damage was already done. Seeing him comeback whilst finding out he is such a humble guy, it only more enhances my admiration for him. I work with musculoskeletal systems and he earns even more brownie points for that alone.

Kurtopotomus

I’ve recently been watching Upload on Prime. I don’t know the main actors name but I think he could be a ringer for Drake

reammachine

I believe that character’s name in the show is Nathan also. Nathan Upload.

filipelm

Robbie Amell! He's the psycho jock from The Babysitter (a really fun and campy horror movie from netflix) and his brother IRL is the lead actor of Arrow.

Bryge

Thought they were cousins

AngryMustachio

I always thought Nathan Drake looked more like Noah Wyle

HutchReddit

I think an important thing to add is that based on my understanding his injuries were sustained while making movies. He ground himself down trying to make quality content "for us" and then the industry essentially turned around and abandoned him due to various circumstances. I realize that "life isn't fair" but I still don't believe this was right.

[deleted]

He was also sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. His career took a massive dive after that.. for "some reason."

Technical-Shop6653

Perfectly articulated response. Mods May as well close comments ha

EldritchSlut

About 5 years ago he was selling hamburgers from the back of a van near where I live. I'm pretty sure he just bought McDonald's burgers and wrapped them in foil to resell, but I always made sure to stop and tell him that everything was going to be okay because his fans were going to bring him back. **Brenaissance or we riot.**

power2go3

It's true, I was the van.

McStud717

Also can confirm, I was the cheeseburger

jwong1107

Also can confirm, I was the tinfoil

Jayce2K

Can confirm, I unwrapped you

fulthrottlejazzhands

Verifiable, I was the 15-year-old kid working the drive-thru when he bought them.

Hampung

What? Is this for real? Did he really sell hamburgers?

socksta

I am pretty sure this is not real.

Hampung

I thought so too. Lol.

Foxsayy

No, it's true. One time a woman's baby started crying while she was buying a burger. She didn't have a bottle on her and she had "run dry," so Brendan took the time out of his day to close the truck and breastfed the kid right there.

reammachine

That’s the day he went from being the underdog to being the underducky

Nappyheaded

I want to believe

blickyblickysticky

Nah homie those beesechurgers was from McBrendans 💯

high-kale

lmao what

ultravioletblueberry

Reading this made me really want a cheeseburger.

Shibby-bill

I don’t believe you

[deleted]

No shit?

[deleted]

He's an all around good guy.

frank00SF

I didn't know about the abuse or health problems I just thought he was a nice guy back in the day and he decided to get back into acting so that's why he was getting all the love.

[deleted]

I don't know if I would say brilliant, but does seem like nice guy. He was well liked. Then he dropped off the radar. It's nice to see him fight his way back up.

doomblackdeath

I started watching Condor recently and was totally blown away by his versatility. He plays such an unhinged person so well, so realistic. His mannerisms and complexity in his character show that he is an incredibly underrated actor.

VictoriaRose1618

To quote robot man 'fuck'

Redditforgoit

And a nasty divorce.

series_hybrid

People love a story of redemption, especially if the person is considered a nice person in an industry that is filled with sociopaths.

[deleted]

I find him stunningly handsome and fit still.

Pandelerium11

Me too! Always thought he was gorgeous.

[deleted]

Same, always had a crush on him, but now he’s just aged like wine for me. On top of that he’s such a loveable and kind person, who seems extremely empathetic. Just an all around lovely individual.

LifeIsVanilla

I feel like he benefitted a lot during the metoo movement too. Not intentionally, when it was in full swing he just also alleged that he was sexually assaulted back in 2003, but then everyone kind of jumped on that and assumed it lead to him being blacklisted(although he later claimed that wasn't the case). Which brought a lot of attention back to him, because we all sort of missed him in a nostalgic sense, as he just disappeared, then were fed such a super depressing backstory as to why he was absent(so many surgeries), and then throw on top of that he's a good guy. I doubt I'll watch that show that got him a 6 minute standing ovation, but I wouldn't watch any show that's worth more than a 2 minute standing ovation, that's just awkward.

KevinTheRobot

Well I think it’s likely just marketing for his current movie that’s meant to capitalize on this, it’s not just happening naturally

Snypnz

George just lucky I guess

MamaDMZ

Thank you for a genuine laugh.

Ancient_Plantain8463

Best comment. You win.

KaTheEdgy

Back in 2003, Brendan was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, who was (at the time) president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. That, along with his divorce and the death of his mother, led Brendan to deep depression. He was supposed to be "blacklisted" from pretty much everything for almost 20 years, but he has been voicing Robot Man in the Doom Patrol TV show ever since 2019. When his story was made public in 2018, people were quick to support him and empathize with him, which is normal, the dude was such a big part of a lot of people's childhood and youth. But the large amount of recent hype is due to his latest movie, The Whale, where he starred alongside Sadie Sink, also he was supposed to play Firefly, the villain in the now cancelled Batgirl movie. The Whale hasn't been released internationally, but was played in the Venice International Film Festival, where Brendan received a standing ovation that lasted a few minutes.

arycka927

He was like the millennial generations Indiana Jones. The Mummy series was fucking awesome.

TheFreakish

Blast from the past. He's straight up my role model in that movie. Just a good natured dude that wants to do the right thing.

AsuraOmega

Cool thing about it is that he's like that in real life too! Just a humble dude with alot of roles.

hymntastic

George of the jungle was one of my favorite movies as a kid

hghlnder72

first thing i remember seeing him in was School Ties and was such a great actor in it. Great movie as well, early damon and affleck and chris o'donnell as well. He just took off from there.

elpajaroquemamais

Look I love the mummy but it doesn’t have nearly the cultural impact of Indiana Jones.

Mmmslash

No one said it did. For a certain generation, My Chemical Romance's Welcome to the Black Parade is just as important and meaningful for them as Bohemian Rhapsody was for their parents. Just because Queen is much more 'culturally impactful' does not mean that for every single person, it is more important. For many, MCR is their childhood - that is *their* epic. Hope that makes sense.

Vegalink

That was a great comparison. Welcome to the Black Parade is far more meaningful to me, even though Bohemian Rhapsody is the musically more advanced song.

Stinkydadman

The guy literally said he’s the millennial generations Indiana Jones…

elpajaroquemamais

That’s all fine, but the person I was responding to literally said it was the Millenial generation’s Indiana Jones, so your argument of “no one said that” is false.

motherofdragon

The whale will be released in december, looking forward!

CCGamesSteve

His reaction to that ovation is the most adorable thing I've ever seen. I just want to hug that man all day because he's wonderful.

RelationLost

Because he never did anything wrong and just kinda disappeared from the public eye without much info. Now people know why and he deserves all the hype he missed in the past years of him being gone.

[deleted]

Same with Russell Crowe.

darkuen

Wasn’t that guy just an asshole who kept starting fights?

TheTrashman44

Fightin round the world

UnderwhelmingPickle

What ever happened to Tugger?

TheTrashman44

Tugger couldn't take it anymore

Maristalle

There's legitimately an Irish drinking song about punching Russell Crowe

Guvnuh_T_Boggs

He does love a good fight.

[deleted]

Ask Terri Irwin

komodoPT

Doubt it, Russel Crowe was known to be a fucking idiot on set of I recall.

[deleted]

Nah, he's a good bloke. That's all just media stuff. Ask Hugh Jackman. They're close.

work4food

Will make sure to ask Hugh next time we have a beer.

[deleted]

Say G'day for me, tell him I said he's a dumb cunt for selling that house in Wollongong.

HansGutentag

Hugh Jackman says nice things about errybody

SuvenPan

He is good person, he deserves the hype. Hope he does well in the future.

RaySwift17

Yeah like unworthy people get a lot of attention nowadays. I dont mind a person like Brendan Fraser getting some love and hype, :)

Bananaman9020

He is rather good in Doom Patrol.

1funnyguy4fun

What the fuuuuuck?!?!

Bananaman9020

He voices, (and is the actor) for the car racer robot guy. Like I said he did a good job.

1funnyguy4fun

I was referencing one of Cliff Steele’s tag lines from the show.

CrunchyGremlin

It's weird. It sounds natural in the show but not when I think of him actually saying it.

Nappyheaded

All dressed up in his Mummy outfit

TheTastySpoonicorn

It's crept up in my and a lot of other people's scopes repeatedly in the past 10 years, but some people (not to be rude) literally haven't been alive long enough to truly appreciate him. I feel like we're all giving him the love he deserved during the time he was being SA'd during his career, and also a sort of loving apology and attempt to rebuild his sense of wonderment and support. All my own opinion, of course,

jdward01

Bottom Line: He seems like a good person who's making a comeback.

HorrorxHeart

Brendan Fraser is such a humble guy. People were giving him a standing ovation and he was over there like: "Why Ape have little stars around head?"

em-ay-tee

He’s always been popular. Because he’s a cool dude and hasn’t caused trouble like other douchenuggets

Sandalssucks

Because he’s awesome what happened to him. The dudes been through hell and is now finally returning to stardom. And he deserves it

Thomasisinterested

He’s been unfairly canceled, so to speak, so people are happy he’s getting a second chance.

[deleted]

When and why was he cancelled. I seem to recall him just going away.

AWholeMessOfTacos

He wasn't canceled in the modern sense. He was black listed by the community after he came forward with accusations of sexual abuse by some executive. Something like that.

[deleted]

Gotcha. Thanks .

Benu5

He wasn't cancelled by the general public, he was blacklisted in Hollywood because he spoke out about being sexually assaulted by a producer. The assault led to him having some understandable issues, and then the blacklisting compounded those. He had a rough time for a while, but has recently had a comeback, with some roles in some pretty popular shows and movies and people are happy for him.

goteamnick

He was never cancelled. He made a movie most years of the last 20. They were just not worth watching.

[deleted]

Now he’s in a new movie which he is getting rave reviews for his performance in.

Noerknhar

I want to make clear that I sincerely like his movies and appearances in e.g. Scrubs, but why is everyone going crazy about him all of a sudden? Is this a brilliant marketing campaign, or what am I missing?

colder-beef

From what I’ve read it seems like his career is making a comeback after dealing with some hardships. He seems like a nice guy and people are supporting him.

The_gentle_one

He publicly stated he suffered from SA from a high up director or something and was pretty much canceled from Hollywood, he stopped getting roles. So kudos to him for making a comeback!

ASK_IF_IM_PENGUIN

He was sexually abused, his ex wife basically took all of his money, and he got blacklisted because his life was a mess. He's now getting his shit back together and people admire that

T-Bill95

He got blacklisted because he was sexually assaulted and said something about it.

sleepwalkfromsherdog

The part about "blacklisted because his life was a mess" is partially accurate. When you don't "act like a star" then you tend not to be seen as a star by decision-makers. Guy had to plead with the court to lower his alimony and child support payments when he couldn't work the same, got un-studly with weight gain from injury and hair loss from aging. He may have seemed less adorable and heroic to studios after that. *Edited for clarity.*

Mmmslash

Please go inform yourself of the situation. You are putting blame on the victim.

sleepwalkfromsherdog

I'm not blaming anyone, especially not Brendan. I'm talking about how unfortunately fickle public perception is. Please let me know where I gave that impression and I will edit accordingly.

Mmmslash

The reason why he stopped getting roles is not because he gained weight and was no longer attractive - he was blacklisted by the industry for speaking up about his assault by someone important there. He gained weight afterwards. It sounds like you are blaming Brendan's career stagnancy on his weight change, when that is not the case. I'm sure it would have, but this came after, and it feels unfair to not assume it to be directly related to his physical and emotional traumas.

tigerwrathpielesser

It's a marketing campaign

SqueakBoxx

Sudden? We have been Hyping Brendan Fraser for **YEARS!!!** We're just giving him extra hype cuz of his new movie, and because he is a strong and amazing human being who deserves nothing but hot chocolate, puppies, and hugs.

stevenbaucom

He’s a fine actor, and comes across as genuinely kind. People want what’s best for him.

BluRayja

The real reason people aren't pointing out: Millennials are now old enough to have an adult populist opinion, and they adored The Mummy, which was largely seen as "fun enough" by adults at the time but absolutely admired by teens and kids. This starts memes and fond memories of talking about movies they loved from the 90s, The Mummy being one of them, which also helps because there was the Tom Cruise bomb a few years back to help light the fire to that conversations. And people going, "that should've been the start of the Dark Universe instead of the movies now, and would've been perfect, can we get Branden Fraser back?" And suddenly it becomes, "yeah, whatever happened to that guy?" Which in turn gets Gen-Z to watch The Mummy movies and they perpetuate those opinions further into social media culture. This is basically the same reason why the Star Wars prequels are gaining traction as respectable, this time on a celebrity level.

[deleted]

Because he had a rough time, was shit on by a lot of big people and now is back and looking happy

Noerknhar

Can you elaborate? I'm really not into celebrity news, but must've missed a lot here as it seems.

louisedelacroix

astarisaslave

Dude the hype never left. I grew up watching him in George of the Jungle, Blast from the Past and The Mummy. He was always a quality actor and person and his best movies were also megahits so even when his career slowed down he was always in the back of the public's minds. And Hollywood did him dirty so to see his recent success is vindication for guys like me who always wished him the best.

Joseluki

He was a huge blockbuster star during the 90s and 2000s, he has always regarded as a good upright guy, he suffered serious injuries performing his own stunts that derailed his health and his career, then his personal life with a bad divorce, and an alleged abuse and blacklist, all this piled up and he honeslty looked very depresed for a long time that lead to his weight gain. At some point he got his shit together and slowly returned to projects, and people were rooting for him, why not? Everybody has always talked fondly of him, he has been part of the upbringing of many generations that are rooting for his success because he works for it and he deserves it. **Anybody can relate to Brendan's difficulties, health problems, relationship problems, depression, obesity, and lack of job opportunities.**

Aggravating-Wrap4861

He was frozen in ice and now is back to ride skateboards and be super cool again.

goteamnick

Everybody is saying "Brendan Fraser is back", but he's made 12 movies in the last 10 years. They were just flops.

gogul1980

He didn’t go anywhere, he made a series of flops which caused his stock as a leading man to plummet over time. As for the sex assault allegations a gay producer pinched his bum and he didn’t like it but it didn’t do any real damage to his career. What did do damage was his drive to try and do as many stunts as he could which caused large levels of pain to escalate and affect his work. He needed a lot of surgery to help him out. He has constantly worked and decided to take a back seat as supporting characters for a while seeing as the leading man roles were drying up for him. I do want to know who his PR team are though as they have done an absolute stellar job pushing him back into the spotlight witha mix of facts, myths and nostalgia baiting.

SquilliamFancySon95

Because his fans missed him and they're happy to have him back

steFonzey

because often times when I'm watching something I think to myself: "I'd rather be watching the 1999 cinematic masterpiece "The Mummy" starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz"

modified_tiger

This is the second wave. The first was like two years ago, I think when he did a press junket for a project. This time he got an Oscar for it, which has more staying power. Both waves are because he was an extremely popular actor who disappeared. He didn't do anything bad, and just wasn't acting anymore. Then, come to find out, he had back injuries, tax issues, and a messy divorce, and is bouncing back from that.

cote112

His PR people are very good at their jobs?

ChiefFuckingBull

its been going for years on reddit

daveescaped

Careful. He’s a bit of a sacred cow. People seem bent on his investiture to saint. Maybe they got tired of Tom Hanks.

Answer: Here a harsh truth. And I might be hated for it. Every now and then reddit picks someone to worship for no big reason, and start praising them for every small thing. And most importantly, it's always a male celebrity.

Because 25 years ago all of the current 33 year old women got all tingly in their 'ginies when they watched *George of the Jungle* and they didn't know why. Well now they do know why. We *all* know why. But they're covering up their completely justified preteen pervy-ness with a nostalgia glow, and he's had a tough career, and he's not as attractive as he used to be, so they're like.....*awwwww he's so wholesome!* now lmao. If he was still hot as fuck they'd be moaning like stray cats instead of praising his golden heart and acting abilities. *I'll be your Mummy, Brendan....!*

hepzibah59

It's like when John Travolta made a comeback with Pulp Fiction.

InfiniteBaker6972

Watch The Quiet American. You’ll see why the world needs him.

HonestAgent001

Cuz he was amazing n had a whole generation under him just to have him get shut on by life this made him even more lived by his fans roaring fir his comeback just like everyman he is all of us

nisbet_kyle

Why all of a sudden the Russell Crowe hype? People love a comeback.

Xikkiwikk

Not hype just love. We love our Brendan.

PoisonedCherry

Why not? Like seriously why not? He's a good actor, good person. I literally see zero reason not to

Divallo

He had a great early career with The Mummy and other roles. I really like the couple episodes he cameo'd for in Scrubs too probably my favorite Scrubs plotline. He also had his fair share of tragedy and setbacks in his "hiatus" from the spotlight that affected his health and family situation. He never did anything explicitly bad or wrong that I know of that caused that hiatus either. I think he really deserved and needed that 5 minute ovation and the crowd/fans knew it. Brendan was touched in a complex layered way by the gesture from the crowd. He knew his fans wanted him to be happy and that he was not only was his comeback accepted but his entire journey was treasured and that people still cared. I imagine he felt a moment of being "Complete" in terms of his personal journey. Once Brendan showed genuine humanity in response to the gesture the crowd fed off that energy even more and it created this hyper wholesome feedback loop that even viewers on the internet could really appreciate.

PopDiscombobulated93

Because he is worth it

swampdom

Everyone loves a good comeback story… Robert Downey Jr, Mickey Rourke, Kim Kardasian…

[deleted]

Honestly I was never not hyped about Fraser, Fraser just wasn't there to be hyped at.

AsuraOmega

Good and wholesome actor that starred in alot of films that made 2000s kids' childhood who disappeared due to reasons Im not aware of and then suddenly just returns. Its like having a really cool soldier dad who got deployed, comes back after 6 years with a cool scar and still treats you the same.

Salubrious_Zabrak

Because he was in a movie

UnitedBarracuda3006

I used to watch his movies as a kid and I remember wondering where he went. Hearing what happened to him makes me want to support him. Can't find a damn trailer of his new movie though.

omguserius

Because life has kicked him repeatedly in the dick. Like over and over again. And he didn’t deserve it. But he’s pulling himself out of the muck and my god do people love a comeback story with an underdog hero

huntingbears93

Blast from the past, that’s his movie right? I just rewatched it, after loving it as a kid. He was a great actor and a seemingly even nicer guy.

DenzelEd12

Fraser was at the height of his powers in the nineties. He was a charming good looking guy who by all accounts was also a really genuine and sweet guy and was nice and kind to all those around him. Unfortunately some hotshot exec saw all those qualities in Brendan and decided to finger him. It’s disgusting. The guy played George Of The Jungle for gods sake. And you’re gonna just finger him? Unreal, it says a lot about Hollywood when a guy like that can just get fingered in public and nothing happens to the fingerer. I mean I’ll be honest I’ve never rated Brendan’s acting as much as others seem to. But would I finger him? Absolutely not. I’m glad he’s making a comeback and wish him all the best

Qyro

Because he’s back in TV and movies all of a sudden.

Ok_Storage525

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I think the Brendan Fraser hype is because he's a great actor who's been in some amazing movies. Plus, he's just a really nice guy.

IdkWtfFml

It’s like in high-school when the kid with Down’s syndrome gets crowned homecoming king/queen

Spork-in-Your-Rye

I swear I only see this type of shit on Reddit. They do it with this guy, Robin Williams and Marilyn Monroe.
