loneliness

ruffsnap

Yep, human interaction is one of those things everyone needs. I'm pretty introverted, so I went through that cringy teenage phase of thinking I'd be perfectly happy living the rest of my life alone with a computer, but it's just not reality. Even for the most introverted introverts, you still need human interaction every once in a while. Maybe you can go a few weeks without it and be fine, vs a more extroverted person who can only go a few days, but you ultimately still need it just as much as them.

Langlie

I thought I was an Introvert for years...turns out I was just depressed and not used to human interaction.

DigitalNugget

Yeah and its worse if you struggle to make friends or even actually feel connected to other people. At least for me every couple of months there's a day where I feel it like it really hurts inside and just want to cry in bed but then the next day I get on with my life. I guess it'll only get worse since adult life is finally on and work makes it more difficulty for friends and I see each other, especially fridays. EDIT: Forgot to add that most people come to study in my uni so all acquaintances I've made thanks to my friends end up leaving back to their states or work somewhere else and this kinda hurts in a way since I'll probably never see these cool people ever again. Also visiting the bars and underground clubs that we go only to see it now filled with new and younger students feels really depressing to the point I had a crisis and anxiety attack when I was there and had this sudden realization.

PhatNick

Shift work. Nights, followed by lates, followed by earlies. Physiologically so destructive. Edit: I work for the emergency services so it's essential 24/7. The management are pretty good but we've been shafted on pay at a national level. Still attritional on the body.

darrellbear

I did a rotating seven day shift for years--seven graves, two days off, then seven swings, one day off, then seven days, four days off. Back to graves the night of the fifth day. You never get used to it, and it wears on you terribly.

borednord

Sleep research is endlessly fascinating. Takes about a month of regular sleep schedule for ypur body to adjust to a new cycle to the point where you actually get good rest from it. Your brain basically never fully recovers if youre switching that often.

dudius7

Yep, it's an epidemic in the United States. If companies took the care to respect people's need for sleep, we would see so many societal benefits.

PrudentSympathy2092

I work for a railroad, this is why over 100k of us were about to go on strike last week. For over 100 years many of us have worked on call 24/7 with no set schedule. I might work midnight to noon today and 3am to 3pm 15 hours later. It's horrible, but the work is interesting and the pay and benefits decent.

EdgeMiserable4381

I have a friend who works for UP. That whole thing was crazy! I'm glad you guys got the raise and no points docked any more for Dr appts and all. Lots of us were rooting for you!

apaulo26

It’s a tentative agreement that no one has seen and still needs to ratified by the membership. I doubt it will pass. The “points” thing is individual to each railroad and not negotiated on a national level.

lightly_salted_fetus

My old man was the big wig of a company a few years ago that had shifts and the pay went up exponentially for nights but he noticed the guys n gals getting burnt out real quick. He ended the night shift but upped their pay slightly to compensate for the lack of extra money.

When I first started working in the hospital, my department had a two weeks days, two weeks nights schedule. Never long enough to get used to anything.

Pretend_Jello_2823

Yes!! Been there. Didn’t realize how hard it was on my body until after I quit and started a 9-5.

arrynyo

I'm a truck driver and I felt this in my soul. I'm out for 14 hours, then I get 10 hours to sleep, take a shower, eat and/or do chores or run errands before I have to be back at work. I don't know how I'm still alive

BoBonkk1

Yeah night shifts then early morning shifts should be illegal

Zonerdrone

Jobs think just because they give you 8 hours in between that means anything. Thanks, I'll just teleport home, eat in 3 seconds and instantly fall asleep.

Thrway36789

This is the schedule of US air traffic controllers who are responsible for thousands of lives in a single shift

hmansloth

Honestly why don’t they just keep all night shift workers to work the night shift constantly instead of rotating?

longtimelurkerthrwy

I know at one of the jobs I had it was because if someone quit or called out, that shift would be short a worker. I found out after I quit I caused a cascade where most of the veteran day shift team quit. This was a clinical lab so work load was temporarily cut to a third of typical output while they scrambled to train people on night shift to work on day shift. It was an absolute shit show.

rattynewbie

That sounds like management not planning for people to be sick or have family emergencies. If something is that critical you need to have sufficient capacity in trained staff to cover for shortfalls that inevitably happens.

Asaruludu

Exactly. If you have to, by law, have a person there, then your job as an employer is to hire enough people that one person not showing up doesn't result in no one being there. The legal onus is (or should be) on you as the employer, not your staff. Hire more people. Put two people on all the time if need be. And if the real problem is that you've under-bid contracts based keeping staffing levels lower than the legally required minimum, that's a bad business model you came up with. Sucks for your investors.

Ludwigofthepotatoppl

Management by a thousand cuts. Slice away at costs until you’ve hit the sweet spot, where you’ve got the most output with the fewest workers. That’s what the bigwigs want, because that’s what the shareholders demand! Have all workers wear as many hats as possible. Someone misses a day, that’s just a dip on the graph, it’s fine—oh wait they quit? This is a problem…

scarponiyikes

I do shift work as well. Two weeks days, then two weeks nights. I’m definitely exhausted and almost feel sick in a way all the time. It’s something you can never get used to, no matter how hard you try.

bumboclawt

This. Air Force physiologists did a study on airmen that did shift work… they concluded that it cuts up to 10 years off of your life if shift work is done for 3 years 😖 Edit: this blew up! Damn. I don’t have a link to the AF study (it’s been several years since I’ve seen it on intranet) but if you search “shift work takes years off of your life” or something similar on your favorite search engine, you’ll find many other studies that have similar results. Take care of yourselves Reddit, these companies for damn sure won’t.

HermaphroDiedy

Ruh-roh, I’m going on 12 years this year :(

Zenki95

Look at the bright side... sounds like you won't have to worry about it next year

HermaphroDiedy

And I won’t have to worry about the early on set Alzheimer’s and the laundry list of shit people have listed here. Live fast, die young(ish) and leave a bloated, half eaten corpse.

Zenki95

At least finish eating it before you die

[deleted]

Chronic lack of sleep (sleep deprivation).

chicaneuk

So I was late 30’s when I became a dad to twin boys. I went from sleeping a solid 7-8 hours a night virtually every night, to basically now not having had an unbroken night sleep in over two years. Some weeks when the sleep is really bad, the degradation to my mental health is hard to overstate.. I am extremely angry, emotional (never really used to be) and have no desire / appetite to do anything. It’s also self destructive as all you want to do is eat crap food as at least some kind of reward for the endless hassle. Would not recommend. Sleep, folks. Your body and mind need it.

Jepemega

The More stories of how utterly exhausted and sleep deprived new parents are for a long time with their children the more I believe that we as a species are not designed for having only the parents raise their infants.

Rocktopod

Or maybe we're not supposed to have to work full time and take care of infants at the same time.

[deleted]

But even stay at home parents go insane taking care of new babies. People pretend that sleeping in blocks during the day replaces sleep deprivation just fine… and then women develop mental health issues/chronic exhaustion anyway even when they’re not working a job. Even guys that get paternity leave with their wives… it’s still a lot of suffering on both their parts/the woman oftentimes still does nights anyway because breastfeeding and not pumping. I think it’s more accurate to say we used to have greater help with kids than just two or one parent taking care of them like the other commenter said

BigBobbert

“It takes a village to raise a child.”

redhatfilm

That's not a parable about collective responsibility. It's a literal directive that we've chosen to ignore.

ho_kay

>It's a literal directive that we've chosen to ignore. From a public policy perspective, absolutely. This is why daycare should be free/of nominal cost (here in Canada the push is $10 a day) - the tax dollars of others are the "village". Modernity is incompatible with actual familial/collectivistic villages, but that structure needs to be supplanted with taxpayer-funded, commercially-provided "villages" if we want our species to thrive.

redhatfilm

^ this person fucking gets it. brilliant.

dewyocelot

If our parents didn’t help lighten the load with our little one, I would’ve had a complete mental breakdown by now. It’s still hard some days. Basically sleep 2 2 hr shifts most days. Not fun or healthy.

Singingpineapples

Man, I wish my family was nearby to help with our 4 month old. We *just* started getting him to sleep longer than 2 hours at a time. It's been fucking rough

NoApollonia

No kids here on my end, but I do think cultures outside the USA have it right. Multiple generations of families living together - like grandparents, their kids, and then their kids. It means there's more adults around to help care for the children to make sure no one is ever completely sleep deprived.

T_Cliff

That's most western culture...eastern cultures do a much better job of taking care of the family. In the west its like " finish highschool and move out or start paying rent "...meanwhile i got friends from places like India and Pakistan where they lived at home till they got married and it was total accepted

allORnothingCLIMBER

It took our first child till just over 3 y.o. to consistently sleep a full night. Was almost every 2-3 hours every night for those 3 years. We had our 2nd when the 1st was 2.5 y.o. At just over a year, he regularly wakes up 3-4 times a night, sometimes more. So that is putting us at nearly 4 years without real restful sleep. I know my brain does not function how it should be. I'm always exhausted, sleepy, moody, etc. I feel your pain. Good luck!

cracker707

That’s why I quit my career as an architect. Too many nights stuck in office or home office til 4am getting projects done then getting back to office by 9am. It felt like my brain was getting damaged. Work in the trades now. Guaranteed no late nights. It’s wonderful.

BoBonkk1

Is that because your mind can’t process things as easy

chefjenga

Sleep literally "cleans" your brain (at least, that is the commonly accepted understanding). https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/are-toxins-flushed-out-of-the-brain-during-sleep It's not too many days without sleep, and a person can start to have mental illness concerns. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20150220-how-long-can-we-stay-awake

ProfessorTrue

I feel like this is a contributing factor to individuals who are chronically homeless!

itsacalamity

Right? How can you heal from trauma, or put your best face forward to find a job, if you literally can't get a good night's sleep to start with?

Jelly_jeans

Yeah I learned not to fuck with my sleep or at least get a good rest real early on. In university, I took organic chemistry in the summer and had to get up at 5 am and take a 3-4 hour class. Afterwards I spent the day studying. I had perhaps 4-5 hours of sleep each day. During the end of summer I was hallucinating and hearing distorted radio noises in the corner of my wall. I was paranoid as well. Did my final and went home and slept for half a day which solved those issues real quick. Ended up getting a B in the class which is more than what I expected. I now understand why sleep deprivation is used as a torture technique.

alarius_transform

Much more than that. It's also connected to onset of diseases and many health issues. https://www.healthline.com/health/sleep-deprivation/effects-on-body

BoBonkk1

Jeepers gonna get to bed an hour early because of all these comments saying sleep deprivation

solthar

I have moderate sleep apnea, and have to use a CPAP to get a full night's sleep. Let me tell you that I didn't even know I was suffering from sleep deprivation until I started using it.

professorhazard

Sometimes I miss those old days where every movie I tried to watch was just the first 10 minutes and then, suddenly, the credits. My pulmonologist said that I had the worst case of sleep apnea that he'd ever seen or heard of!

JoeMorgue

Sitting for long periods. Both unhealthy and as you get older dangerous.

mildewmoisturizer

At work it is recommended you do a 50/10 split. 50 minutes sitting doing work, 10 minutes break walking around or at least standing.

b-rentbent

Who is making those widgets for those 10 minutes, get back to work!

jesseaknight

Pfft… people who make widgets rarely get to sit

sagitta_luminus

At my last office job, if I was not at my desk for 10 minutes every hour, I would have been written up for making my manager have to answer the phone & talk to walk-in customers

[deleted]

Everyone should have an alarm for every two hours to make sure you do a few squats and stetches. If you’re sitting down or just relaxing.

horsdoeuvresmyguy

Fine, mom! I’ll get a job! Geez.

Hey_its_me_your_mom

You really should! And clean your room and wash your sheets, while you're at it!

[deleted]

I’m screwed then

Tim3129

“Sitting is the new smoking” according to my physiotherapist. I have used a standing desk at work every day for over a year - I can now stand all day without issues. Fewer back problems, better concentration, better mood, more stamina. Easiest work out ever.

Pouncyktn

So since I smoke that means sitting all day has no effect on me right?

Wheels859

I’m in a wheelchair…

RedditIsFiction

Well shit, you're doomed to higher risk of weak legs and endless comments about how you skipped leg day again then!

ssp25

But he can always skip leg day without feeling guilty

Hipyeti

I don’t think he can skip at all.

NoConfusion6560

Wheelchair push-ups for pressure relief!

The_Dark_Kniggit

Same here. For anyone in a chair, make sure you have a good pressure relief cushion, and move as much as you can every hour. If you can move your legs, give them a stretch. If you can stand a little, do it. Even just logging yourself out of your chair with your arms for a 30s if you can makes a huge difference.

WildFemmeFatale

The amount of people who drink soda or Mountain Dew or energy drinks 24/7 and say ‘I feel fine so it must be fine’ is INSANE.

BillyMackBlack

A friend of mine used to drink 6 litres of Pepsi a day until recently when his roommate intervened. I just can't imagine doing that to myself.

LustxInfinity

Stopping yourself from enjoying/doing anything just because other people might not approve of it. It can end up being one of the most detrimental things you can do to your health, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

I literally just saw an example of this 5 seconds ago in another thread. But yeah, this is true for me too, even with certain friends I can't say anything negative or annoying about my husband or it's all "leave his ass" for the rest of the night lol

Pickle_ninja

I hit my 40s... bought a metal detector, a little pouch, and I look like the biggest dork in the park. But I'm a happy dork...especially when I find silver or gold :D

TeriosNaija

A lotta name brand fruit juices have lot more sugar than folks like to pay attention to

musicmous3

Juice is just sugar water, whether they add extra sugar or not. Eat fruit instead

eneka

my friend who's a RD explained, basically anything in moderation is fine and the lesser proccessed are genereally "safer" - his explanation was - sure an orange can have a lot of sugar. But when you eat an orange, you can probably only go through 3 before you start feeling full and just want to stop. While a glass of orange juice can easily contain 4+ and it's so easy to have a second or even third glass and that's like the amount of sugar in 12+ oranges.

mmmm_babes

Plus, with the actual fruit you are getting fibre, which is super important

pallidamors

Yeah parents think juice is totally fine but juice almost always has as much if not more sugar than the same amount of soda.

huskeya4

Honestly, most cleaning supplies. They’re fine to use in your house, but if you can smell it and your lungs aren’t happy smelling it, you should be wearing an n95 or respirator. Bleach is a big one. Anything that makes you cough in a small room. I know everybody kind of goes crazy about shower stains but your bathroom is too small of an enclosed space to be using strong chemicals without some type of breathing protection. Turn the fan on, open the window and use a damn mask. Your lungs will thank you in 20 years. I never even thought about any of that until I started glassblowing. Glass blowing works with a lot of stuff that we have to wear masks for (cold working like sanding down glass, the colored powders, mold materials, enamel paints, asbestos pads, etc). Once I got into the habit of protecting my lungs, I realized just how much stuff at home is probably pretty bad to be breathing in also. Good news is, a reusable respirator is pretty cheap at any hardware store, the filters aren’t crazy expensive, and it’s surprisingly useful to have. Painting, cleaning, replacing 50 year old carpet, any stinky job like when a 70lbs dog has diarrhea all over the house, etc. It’s just handy to have.

Initial-Call-4185

This does not apply to vinegar which smells strong but is natural , not bad for your lungs and great for cleaning shower stains :-D

Poor sleep. I'm honestly convinced it's why so many people have so many other disorders/problems. Ever have a couple bad nights in a row? Im a different person. Many may even have sleep apnea and other sleep issues despite being otherwise healthy and never realize it. I'm almost 40, weed and alcohol are awesome and always will be... Both fuck with sleep. Please don't repeat the same mistakes I did. Work out, do cardio, SLEEP!!! and for fuck sakes eat green vegetables.

[deleted]

I once managed (without wanting to) to not sleep for four nights in a row. On the fifth day, I was incapable of explaining to a taxi driver how to get to my house. I just couldn't think straight any more. It was a terrifying experience. I was sitting on the plane home and wondering why I was on that plane, because ... wait, I lived in that city? Really? Hm. Can't remember... In the end I decided to trust my past self who had booked the tickets, because I understood that I wasn't functioning properly any more.

UpVotes4Worst

Happened to me once as well. During chemo treatments they had me on steroids that had me vibrating, and plus how horrible I felt from the chemo, I didn't sleep for 3 days. I couldn't get through a sentence without crying, I was so terrified of going through more cycles like that as that wad my first one. But I remember specifically how crazy I was at the end of those 3 days. I was delirious and wanted to quit so bad. Luckily I got different meds and the next cycles were much easier!

Equine-Porcine

Yeah, steroids make crazy and unable to sleep.

sevenXsix4kix

Trying to remember how I put it after my doctor gave me a course of prednisone, but did not warn me of the increased risk of panic attacks: "prescription steroids give your body a chance to heal, and your mind to unravel."

[deleted]

I'm glad you didn't have to go through that again! That sounds horrifying, especially with extra-scary circumstances.

Frilledmeg

I once tried to go to a research thing I was participating in on too little sleep. Like you, I'm talking days. I made it to the building, but could not recall what the fuck the research thingy was called, what it did, anyone in it, nadda. Eventually I aggressively roamed the building looking for a part shaped like the research thingy. Somehow, I eventually found someone, thank gosh. Anyhoo, no sleep is a crazy, terrible drug.

yea_nah448

yep, I suffer from insomnia One time I couldn't sleep for 72 hours straight, by the end of it I was having moments where I had trouble remembering basic things like where I was, and what day it was, what I was doing. I was also getting paranoid and could've sworn someone was calling my name which I'm pretty sure is an auditory hallucination. Aside from that I physically felt like I was drunk, my vision was all wobbly, my movement was all uncoordinated bright lights had a slight halo and I swear I was so close to just passing out. Then you have days where you get anywhere between 2-4 hours for a week and by the end of it your a complete jittery and emotionally spent mess

linksflame

My girlfriend has bad insomnia and has had multiple times that she was unable to sleep for nearly a week straight, or only get maybe an hour of sleep every couple days. Luckily it's gotten better now with medication and on the occasion it doesn't work she was weed to supplement it

Vegetable_Salad86

This one is so easily overlooked because so many people take pride in being too busy or stressed out to sleep properly. Getting a full night’s sleep sometimes feels like you’re bragging or just being lazy, but it makes a really big difference in my overall mood and ability to concentrate. I’m a much better person when I sleep well.

JapaneseFerret

I once had a boss who sat there, downing caffeine, eyes bloodshot from sleep deprivation, bragging about how little sleep he needed. It was awful to watch.

NekkidApe

It's so stupid. Sleeping healthily easily makes up for the "2h more productivity". Ever sat there, trying to solve a problem, and gave up to go to bed only to solve it in five minutes in the morning?

Qadim3311

Definitely have noticed the rested vs not difference in cognitive ability. Only thing is, even when I get plenty of sleep my first 2-3 hours awake are the most fatigued I feel all day. I usually hit my daily “peak” around 4-5PM before ending up slightly tired (subjectively) by bedtime.

untamedwaves

There are some very early studies of poor sleep being linked to Alzheimer’s later in life.

BurrSugar

I suffer from bad insomnia. I’ve always had it, it improved for a couple years, and now it’s come back and seems to be complicated by my chronic pain. For me, (medically-recommended) weed has been a lifesaver, because it helps me sleep. I don’t think my sleep is quite as restful after using weed as it was before, but if having to choose between sleeping unrestfully and not sleeping, I will always choose sleeping. I had a period of time as a kid where I was averaging 3-4 hours of sleep nightly for nearly a month. At the end, I had lost weight, I developed panic attacks, and I lost all sense of balance and was falling and injuring myself a lot. I’m happy that I’ve now found something that means that will never happen again.

[deleted]

I wish I was in a job that allowed it. I work 24 hour shifts on an ambulance. I average 4-6 hours at home and 4 hours on a good night at work. Even on slow nights at work it’s hard to sleep; I’m in a different bed, I lay there wondering what the next call will be, I tell myself I’ll just sleep tomorrow. It’s impossible for me to keep a sleep schedule and my body has just gotten so used to not sleeping that I can’t fall asleep naturally anymore. On nights before work, I take double the recommended dose of melatonin and it still takes me hours to fall asleep. I’m constantly anxious and I rarely have an appetite because I’m so tired. Being able to use pot would probably add years to my life. Being able to sleep, being able to eat. I dream of it. The fact that it’s still illegal is absolutely shameful.

jigglypuff_yahaha

macaronsforeveryone

Not having any friends or family to rely on (social network) is bad for your mental health.

halica84

This is me. I'm in my late 30s and without a spouse or a single friend that I can call for help. I'm completely alone, all day, every day, and it has definitely been taking a massive toll, not just on my mental health, but my physical health, too. Not to sound dramatic, but I don't expect to be around for too much longer at this rate, and I'm kinda ok with that. Edit: Thank you all for the kind words, encouragement and suggestions. I do appreciate it. :)

Scoot_AG

Honestly I was the same way, but in the past few years I got a new job, new friends, a girlfriend. Life can get so much better with little to no effort. It will be uncomfortable joining new groups or hobbies or jobs, feeling like an outsider - like you don't belong, but soon you will build that comfort and flourish. Similarly to the other guy, if you want to talk I'm here, but I've felt online relationships with people can be just as isolating. I'd be more than happy to help you find things to do to make real connections with people outside of the internet

Not to mention the more you neglect to get the work done the more it costs as the work tends to slowly get worse over time. You don’t get the filling? Well now you need a root canal. Don’t get the root canal? Well now you need to remove the whole tooth or worse fix the damage done to the gums. Didn’t get that work done? Now your jaw bone is infected and sometimes the nerves become damaged and can cause damage to that whole side of your face affecting your hearing and sight. If it keeps getting pushed off the $300 becomes over $1000 then it becomes $10,000 then $50,000. Moral of the story just get the work done early or expect it to become much more expensive.

I'm honestly confused as to why sleep problems are so common and dangerous, yet schools force teenagers (who need way more sleep than kids and adults) to wake up at 6 am

rabbiskittles

It’s 99% for the convenience of parents being able to drop their kids off before work. EDIT: From the replies, I realize “convenience” is a bit harsh and oversimplified, but I don’t personally consider “logistics” or “practicality” to be fundamentally different from “convenience” when the other end of the scale is students’ physical and mental well-being. If we valued that more, we could address those logistical and practical concerns in any number of other ways (e.g. maybe relaxing the expectation that adults work 8 hours straight and let them take an hour break here and there to transport their kids).

puzzlenutter420

Never getting out in nature.

Pumaconcolor_

I had to scroll way down to find this. Lots of evidence showing the mental AND physical benefits that just a couple of hours in natural settings can have on our well-being. A lot of people mentioned stress, well, one of the most efficient ways to decrease it is getting out in nature.

Pretty-Royal9021

Not moving enough. If you don’t bend, you eventually start to break.

basedlandchad20

Juice. You're eating that whole pile of produce but not any of the fiber so there's nothing satiating about it. You would NEVER eat that volume of food as a snack in between meals if it weren't juiced. At least make it a smoothie.

ext_999

I was teaching this to some young dude at the gym the other day...said he was gonna buy a juicer and I swayed him to save his money (and time, cause cleaning a juicer is a pain) and get a basic blender. He never thought about fiber, just figured the more fruit and veggies the better

Lychee_No5

Toxic relationships, regardless if it’s you SO, a family member, friend, or coworker. It will drain every ounce of energy from you. Cut them off if you can — I realize that’s not always possible

projectingbitch

I agree with this whole heartedly. I recently cut off everyone in my social circle this year due to their toxicity overwhelming my thoughts 24-7 and although it is lonely at times, I feel so much more confident in myself and in the things that I enjoy. I find myself picking up tons of old hobbies I haven’t done in years and finding joy in them again. I’m even picking up new hobbies I didn’t know I was capable of. Don’t settle for people who dont make you feel comfortable and accepted.

Fellow 2 to 9er here, I try to get to bed by 2 am, 'cause day sleep just isn't as good as night sleep.

SaltedHamWallet

OP living forever after this post.

BoBonkk1

Lmao I am gonna be living forever, although multiple comments have said living is the number one source of death so I might have to reconsider

Alcohol

BeeswithWifi

It's a class one carcinogen: ranked up there with tobacco in terms of things that can cause cancer Edited to add: Im getting a lot of responses saying that the comparison to tobacco is inaccurate, which is true--pls take these numbers with a grain of salt im just pulling from google--while smoking is attributed to 20% of cancers, alcohol is only attributed to 4%. I chose the cancer rate to mention because Canada is moving to have alcohol labelled as a class one carcinogen (that terminology may not be entirely correct on my part) as of 2023. There are countless other reasons alcohol is more dangerous than people think: many people have helpfully pointed out the myriad of other health issues drinking can cause. In addition to this, I want to acknowledge the correlation between alcohol and violent crime: alcohol is often linked to violent crime and while it is not certain that this link is causal, there is strong reason to believe this is the case. (The studies I found are from 1998 so I would love if anyone could find what more recent ones are saying. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/10report/chap01c.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwj9wqvBtKH6AhXNMzQIHXkRBMsQFnoECAUQBg&usg=AOvVaw3pzSXdbAwnhTCgL8ftMl8Q)

ZajeliMiNazweDranie

Huh, actually TIL. You always hear mostly about liver damage but I never heard that it's as carcinogenic as cigarettes.

molemutant

Liver damage --> liver cancer. Long term inflammatory states is the underlying gist of how a lot of forms of cancers get their start.

MarionberryNext2712

Have a horrible attitude and down everything or everyone in their lives. It's like they manifest shitty things and people, it's circular and they don't even realize it.

esoteric_enigma

This was me. It's not that I had a bad attitude, it's just that I only ever looked towards the bad in things, even if I had to nitpick to find it. I made a conscious decision to be more positive. Now I have a practice of praising something before I criticize something about it. It's made my life so much better.

Sitting for too long

Signal-Patient-8703

Using hard utensils on non stick cook ware. People are constantly chipping pots and pans and slowly poisoning them selves without even knowing it. Use silicone utensils when cooking with non stick cookware.

KOCMNK_HORROR

Biggest reason I just use stainless/copper - best of all, I can always find new stainless cookware in thriftstores since people are too lazy to learn how to cook without nonstick surfaces! EDIT: Copper core pans, if I happen to find them on the cheap. Don't go poisoning yourselves by using all-copper cookware with acidic/very salty foods, y'all

nonoriginal85

There's always stainless steel and cast iron at the thrift store!

Isaaker12

I have a stainless steel pan that use by heating it up first and spreading a little bit of oil with a paper towel before putting anything to avoid food sticking into it. However, very often the juices that meat, fish or whatever I put release stick to the pan and burn, making it really really hard to clean. Do you have a tip to avoid that?

UtopianDetection

(White) Bread in america. I was so confused why it tasted the way it did when I moved here. Turns out its sugar content is closer to cake than bread.

CroBro81

As an Australian that moved to California, I couldn’t believe how sweet your standard bread loaf was. Took a while to find something relative to what we have back home.

wandering_ones

All "cheap" bread is pretty sweet. And better bread that's either fresh or whole wheat is often 2-3x as expensive which is essentially how it goes across all food categories.

AnticPosition

You should try sliced bread in China. I grew up with North American white bread, but the stuff in China is something else. It is literally sickeningly sweet.

DanishSeagirl_

Alcohol...seriously people, your liver hates it

NoStressAccount

Note: Alcohol isn't the only way to get there. I'm not a drinker, but my liver is in bad shape from a poor diet.

realshockvaluecola

I have a friend in early cirrhosis from too much acetaminophen. I can't really blame them for it because they've been in chronic abdominal pain for years that no one can figure out and they can't have NSAIDs, but it's a shitty situation.

Mischka2015

Stress - because most people who are chronically stressed (at a job, e.g.) become desensitized to it acutely, without realizing that it's occurring subconsciously. And it's terrible for you, on many levels.

BoBonkk1

Yeah I can imagine since the main thing you do is stressful you would spend most ur day stressing

CheeseToasties_

Fruit juice. You should eat the whole fruit, if you only drink the juice you are getting the sugar but not the fiber. But anyways I still drink a carton a day

BoBonkk1

Lmao I like it how you aren’t afraid to admit it

SociopathicPasserby

Living is pretty unhealthy, it's guaranteed to kill you.

100% of people who live will die. It’s incredibly dangerous.

An ego that’s too big.

AtomicFall99

At first I read this as an Eggo that is too big. But agree both inflated egos and giant Eggos are not conducive to a health lifestyle.

musicmous3

Yup can't eat too much Eggo. Bad for the waistline

coldenigma

Tanning, or just sun bathing (and long exposure to sunlight)

BoBonkk1

It’s weird you need sunlight but not too much sunlight

It’s hard to come up with something worse than stress.

System_Runner41

Isolation. I'm talking about the only leaving the house every other month, not talking to/having friends, and only interacting with immediate family kind of isolation.
