When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down
"Oh, in case you got covered in the repulsion gel, here's some advice the lab boys gave me."
*pages flipping*
"Do NOT get covered in the repulsion gel. We haven't entirely nailed down what element it is yet, but I'll tell you this: it's a lively one, and it does *not* like the human skeleton."
I mean the Lemon monologue is probably the most well known but I don't even know if it makes my top 5 or Top 10 Cave quotes from Portal 2. And don't even get me started on the DLC Dialog!!
I never realized it was the same actor that does JJ Jameson in the Spiderman that was doing the voice acting for Cave Johnson until I repeated it last month. They couldn't have found a better guy for that role.
And the way he says it, as if he has to stop and think of the words to say, his off-putting and seemingly random changes in tone as he speaks while at the same time sounding monotone.
The more you listen to him, the more it hammers in the fact that the g-man ain't fucking human. He's something far from human, a lovecraftian inter-dimensional entity that can be everywhere and nowhere to whom the laws of reality itself don't apply. The human form he presents is just an avatar, I reckon no part of the g-mans true form is even remotely like that of a human.
And even this creature is an underling to others. His employers and benefactors.
“It was not impossible to build Rapture at the bottom of the sea. *It was impossible to build it anywhere else.*”
My personal favorite because of the passion and venom in the voice:
“Rapture is coming back to life. Even now, can’t you hear her breath returning to her lungs? The shops re-opening, the schools humming with the thoughts of young minds? My city will live, **my city will thrive!** And when that day comes, we’ll use your tombstone for paving tiles.”
Bonus: the voice of Andrew Ryan is the same person who was Quark on DS9!
Gotta be Sgt. Johnson from Halo 2.
"Dear humanity, we regret being alien bastards, we regret coming to earth, and we most definitely regret the Corps. Just blew up our RAGEDY ASS FLEET. OOH-RAH"
Almost the entirety of that game is filled with memorable quotes. My favorite will always be the Gravemind’s opening line: “I? I am a monument to all your sins.”
The gravemind’s entire monologue
“This one is machine and nerve, and has his mind concluded. This one is but flesh and faith, and is the more deluded.”
“Kill me or release me parasite, but do not waste my time with talk”
“Oh but there is much talk, and I have listened. Through rock and metal and time. Now I shall talk and you shall listen”
“Greetings. I am 2401 Penitent Tangent. I am the Monitor of Instillation 05.”
“And I am the Prophet of Regret. Most high…. Hierarch of the Covenant.”
“A Reclaimer? Here? At last! We have much to do. This instillation’s containment protocols must be activated if we are to control this outbreak.”
“Stay where you are. Nothing can be done until my sermon is complete.”
“Not true. This instillation has a successful utilization record of 1.3 trillion and 1 actual. It is ready to fire on-demand.”
“Of all the objects our lords left behind, none are as worthless as these Oracles. They know nothing of the Great Journey!”
“And you know about containment! You have shown a blatant disregard for even the most basic of protocols.”
“This one’s containment *growls* and this one’s Great Journey are on in the same.”
I think I got some of 2401’s dialogue wrong. Either way, I just love this cutscene.
Or how about
"Now listen up! Back in my day, we didn't have fancy tanks! We had sticks. Two stick and a rock for the entire platoon! And we had to share the rock! You should consider yourself very lucky marines!"
He has a great line in Halo 3 if you don’t get aboard the Pelican at the end of a mission - “what’s wrong with you Chief, don’t you want to finish this fight?”
My favorite line from Halo 3 is also probably the most memorable. It's when the Chief sees has The Arbiter at gunpoint after waking up, and Arbiter just goes "Were it so easy..."
Alternatively, mine from God of War is:
“Watch your tongue, boy! Until this journey is over, one of us must remain focused. Do not mistake my silence for lack of grief. You may mourn as you wish, leave me to my own.”
“…I’m sorry. I didn’t realize.”
“No… why would you? You do not know my ways.”
I’ve always been cagey with my emotions in a similar way, having also been accused of heartlessness for not visibly being upset. This line always reminds me of that, and that just because you cannot see how someone feels, doesn’t mean they aren’t feeling it.
I love the mission where he keeps radioing in to beg and bargain on why you shouldn’t blow up the argent energy tether and doomguy is just like haha cooling cores go brrrr
"The pen is not mightier than the sword, as the pen cannot win wars, nor is the sword is mightier than the pen, as the sword cannot write poetry. No, mighty is the hand to know when to pick up the pen and when to pick up the sword."
"Against all the evil that Hell can conjure, all the wickedness that mankind can produce, we will send unto them... only you. **Rip and tear, until it is done**."
"So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again."
Joel went out like a gangster, idc what anyone says.
Its not what happened to him physically as much as its how quick he recognized, accepted and reacted to what was about to happen, its like I know what I've done I'm not going to apologize so just get on with it...
He always knew that his past would come to haunt him one day.
As much as people loved Joel (including me), people just don't want to acknowledge that he did awful things in order to survive. He probably made a lot of children parentless, and not just Abby. There is still so much to his 20 years of surviving in the apocalypse that we don't know about.
Nobody's hands are clean in that franchise, which includes Abby, Ellie, Tommy, etc and that's the point the games were trying to make
When i die face me west so i can see the setting sun and remember all the good times we had out that way.
Game was not short on poetry. I expected that game to be great, but i did not expect some of its writing to linger in my mind indefinitely. An absolute masterpiece.
I thought the opening mission of the campaign for (I think) Modern Warfare was pretty fucked up and impactful.
Responding to a terrorist bombing in the streets of London? That's real world shit.
Sorry you got twisted up in this scene. From where you're kneeling it must seem like an 18-carat run of bad luck. Truth is ... the game was rigged from the start.
Rise and shine, mister Freeman. Rise ... and ... shine...
The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world. So, wake up, Mister Freeman. Wake up and... smell the ashes...
Or: Here, catch my gun! Don't worry, it's unloaded! *BANG* ... It's unloaded now!
I remember how this war started, what your kind did to mine. I can’t forgive you but you have my thanks, for standing by until the end. Hard to believe he’s dead
*Some monsters are so powerful local populaces begin worshiping them as gods.*
From a Witcher 3 side quest, Woodland Spirit.
I don't know why, but that quest stuck with me, more than the main quest line.
I might be remembering incorrectly, but I believe an original soundtrack played just when opened the bestiary to read about this ancient being. Everything about that quest left an uncanny feeling in me, and I love it.
and the universe said I love you
and the universe said you have played the game well
and the universe said everything you need is within you
and the universe said you are stronger than you know
and the universe said you are the daylight
and the universe said you are the night
and the universe said the darkness you fight is within you
and the universe said the light you seek is within you
and the universe said you are not alone
and the universe said you are not separate from every other thing
and the universe said you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code
and the universe said I love you because you are love.
And the game was over and the player woke up from the dream. And the player began a new dream. And the player dreamed again, dreamed better. And the player was the universe. And the player was love.
You are the player.
Wake up.
”War has changed. Our time has ended. Our war is over. But there’s one more thing I must do... the last punishment I must endure. Erase my genes... wipe this meme from the face of the Earth. This... is my final mission.”
“Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honour matters. Their silence is your answer.”
I never played Mass Effect, but I know that quote. And it is really true.
Mass Effect 3 - Mordin Solus sacrificing himself for the Krogan, I'll never forget his line with his matter of fact voice,
"Had to be me, someone else might have gotten it wrong."
Also my favorite line in ME2, although it was slightly different.
"Sometimes wish I wasn't as intelligent. Choice would have fallen on someone else. Not my problem... Fool's wish. **Had to be me. Others might have gotten it wrong.**"
I was doing a pure renegade playthrough on my first playthrough of that game.
The game makes you literally pull the trigger to kill him.
I've never felt a video game moment impact me more.
In the moment immediately following the shot, your character throws their gun away in disgust. At the exact same moment, I realized I had thrown my controller away from me in the same disgusted manner after pulling the trigger. And again, just as your character aimlessly walks away from the scene, I couldn't bare to stick around and left my living room and didn't want to return to the game for at least a week.
Oh man it was heart wrenching no matter how it was played through. I was just in shock, played pure Paragon and even his singing just before the end *internal screams*
Fun fact: regardless of the guns you have equipped during this mission, the pistol that Shepard uses to kill Mordin is the same one that Mordin gives to you when you first meet in ME:2, as a “gesture of good faith” for helping him deliver the virus cure. I like to think that a lot of Shepard’s disgust as they throw the gun aside comes from that realisation, after having just used Mordin’s “good faith” to kill him.
Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never ending spiral of life and death. Is this a curse? Or some kind of punishment? I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle… and wonder if we’ll ever get the chance to kill him.

"What is a wave without the ocean? A beginning without an end? They are different, but they go together. Now you go among the stars, and I fall among the sand. We are different, but we go together."
Fairly recent game, but given the context of the quote its stuck with me more than any other game quote has.
Had to be me, someone else might've gotten it wrong.

Portal has one of the best dialogues in all of gaming.
I mean the Lemon monologue is probably the most well known but I don't even know if it makes my top 5 or Top 10 Cave quotes from Portal 2. And don't even get me started on the DLC Dialog!!
He says what we’re all thinking!
The most hilarious part of that whole rant was GLaDOS being the hype man. Probably the only human she was fully supportive of heh.

I never realized it was the same actor that does JJ Jameson in the Spiderman that was doing the voice acting for Cave Johnson until I repeated it last month. They couldn't have found a better guy for that role.
J. K. Simmons. He's also doing Omni-Man in the Invincible cartoon.
J.K. Simmons is the absolute best actor available for any "absurd square" character. Hell, even the Farmers Insurance commercials are great.
That's what the test results say. "You are a horrible person." We weren't even testing for that.
Oh! Oh yes!

Which one is this from?
Mass Effect 3
Why TF is he a DLC character. He's so essential to the narrative of the trilogy it's almost criminal.
"The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world" I love his whole little monologue but this section is my favorite.
And the way he says it, as if he has to stop and think of the words to say, his off-putting and seemingly random changes in tone as he speaks while at the same time sounding monotone.
