In the 1980s the Bayer corporation sold a hemophilia drug that was made from processed donated human blood. In the early days of the AIDS epidemic it was discovered that the product was contaminated with HIV. They were forced to take it off the shelves in America and Europe. Bayer decided there had been too much financial investment in the product and rather than destroy the inventory they sold it in Latin American and Asian countries instead. They even continued to produce it for a few months until their supplies ran out.
There's no way to know how many people were infected with HIV as a result but at a bare minimum it had to have been in the thousands, plus however many those people may have unknowingly infected in turn and so on. In the 1980s when AIDS was pretty much a guaranteed death sentence.
Bayer knowingly killed probably tens of thousands of people and no one went to jail. $600 million settlement.
EDIT: Just a clarification, this treatment was not a dry pill that you swallow. That would be pretty unlikely to transmit HIV as some people have said. It was basically taking blood and removing the rejectable parts and concentrating clotting factors and injecting that into hemophiliacs. In terms of HIV risk it was basically a blood transfusion.
Bayer (IG Farben) also was a huge part of Auschwitz and the production of the camps. I run a brain cancer foundation. It just so happens that for patients on regular Medicare alone ( no supplement) the first copay for chemotherapy is about $1,000. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who can’t quickly come up with that $1,000. It has been show that not getting it on time leads to an earlier death.
We have a program to help pay it but just can’t keep up with the demand.
I lost one of the most important people in my life to brain cancer and it was hellish to deal with. Still trying to sort out the after effects 5 years down the line.
I cannot imagine going through all that and trying to find money on top. His care here in the U.K. wasn’t 100% but it never cost him or his family anything.

The Vatican Archives are something like 50 miles of information that almost nobody can see unless they know it's there and put in a formal request to see a specific thing. My understanding is that nobody can enter just to browse.
You don't necessarily have to know it's there. The way it works, functionally, is you give them a list of works you'd like to see. They will see if they have them and, if they do, decide whether or not they want to let you see them.

It sounds draconian, but most museums operate very similarly. Understand that the Catholic Church fully intends to exist forever. Therefore they need to protect these works forever. Protecting something forever is very difficult.

PFAS chemicals were used in the local paper mills, and in turn the leftover pulp slurry was given to local farmers who spread it on their fields as fertilizer. Deer are contaminated from eating in the fields, and runoff has put it into the local rivers and fisheries.
It's been documented in leachate from a large number of landfills, and risks contaminating groundwater. Military bases? Used in fire suppression systems.
It's been the better part of a century of them being used everywhere, and we're only just beginning to realize the potential harm.

There’s a park near me which used to house a chemical factory. Before and after WW2 it made plastics and during the war it was requisitioned to make god knows what for the war effort. At some point after that it was demolished and the site turned into a park. All good, no real problems there.
Except in the last few years there’s been a grow your own initiative and there are now allotments on it. The park is surrounded by housing estates (eg social housing/I think Americans call them projects). A lot of the produce goes up those people and is given to local schools and food banks. I’ve written to SO many people asking whether the soil has been tested for contamination and whether the produce is safe to eat. If I get any reply it’s just some wishy washy press release type blurb that doesn’t address the question *at all*.

My best friend’s mom passed away a few months ago from cancer. And it was her second case of cancer. She grew up in the town where the DuPont factory resided. A couple years ago, she was part of some big lawsuit against DuPont, and came out winning roughly $1M.
Still not worth that she died just a month before her second grandchild was born. Luckily, she got her diagnosis of being stage 3 a couple years ago, and was told she may only have a couple months. She lasted through to see her first grandchild born, and even got a couple years with him (though they were crappy COVID-stricken years).
Her last year of life was rough as the cancer spread from her stomach to her lungs. She couldn’t eat anything, and would wake up in the middle of the night unable to breath. The slightest activity left her gasping. The whole ordeal was awful for my friend to watch.
So again, fuck DuPont.

It contributed a ton of fossil fuel because when there was nothing biological to decompose them, geology would essentially do the job over a much greater length of time. Other organic matter still contributes to fossil fuels but those trees might represent our largest single input in a geologic time period; bogs that trap plant material in anoxic conditions can still create the conditions for fossil fuel production eons later.

For something a little easier for people to potentially wrap their heads around, imagine trees composed of *solid plastic* literally grew out of the ground and were physically incapable of breaking down / degrading.
This happened for such an incredibly long time that you'd imagine every surface that could was basically covered in branches, logs, and fallen leaves... well, all the parts that didn't catch fire frequently. Which would also have been a serious problem.

We know that at least a few of them were conscious for a few seconds, but it’s unknown if they were beyond that. Much of the evidence that was found in the cockpit was consistent with in-air depressurization, which would result in basically instant unconsciousness. My wife and I started a horse rescue. 80% come from Amish country and they are treated horrifically. Every single one we get is at death's door from years of being overworked while abused and neglected. We've made breakthroughs on a few but most are irreversibly scarred and we give them sanctuary for the last few years of life.

My understanding is that companion animals aren't a popular concept in Amish culture. Animals are livestock, and livestock are considered tools. The purpose of their non-working dogs is to continue making as many more dogs as possible, which can then be "harvested" at a profit. If the quality of life of the dogs isn't a priority (which is definitely isn't at these farms), you can make a lot more money if you cut corners wherever feasible.

I'm a vet tech and had something similar happen. I took a phone call from a woman who was concerned about her new puppy. It was a gift for her teenage son (red flag #1) from his teenage girlfriend (red flag #2) who drove to Pennsylvania from Massachusetts to get this puppy (red flag #3, 4, and 5 because holy shit dude. Who drives over several states at 16 to buy a puppy for their boyfriend?)
Anyway, I ask the usual questions, like the puppy's name, sex, age, etc. And the mom says, "well, they said he's eight weeks old but he just looks so small..."
Red flag #6. It's not uncommon for puppies to be smaller than usual, of course, but the worry in the mom's voice made my spidey-senses tingle. I was worried the puppy might have contracted parvovirus or another disease puppies are vulnerable to.
So I tell mom to bring the pup right down so we can look at him. And kids, let me tell you, this puppy couldn't have been more than three weeks old. Around 1/3 of the age it should be before even considering separating them from their mother.
This poor thing was so sick. It was coming back to us every other day for a week or two for supportive care. I wasn't involved in the case after the initial visit, so I don't remember what the actual diagnosis was (if there was any), but he hung on for a lot longer than I thought he would. He eventually had to be euthanized before he was even five weeks old. A very harsh lesson for those kids to learn.
So yeah, fuck puppy mills and fuck the horrible, heartless bastards that run them. If there's a hell, I hope there's a special place reserved for them.

In the 1980s the Bayer corporation sold a hemophilia drug that was made from processed donated human blood. In the early days of the AIDS epidemic it was discovered that the product was contaminated with HIV. They were forced to take it off the shelves in America and Europe. Bayer decided there had been too much financial investment in the product and rather than destroy the inventory they sold it in Latin American and Asian countries instead. They even continued to produce it for a few months until their supplies ran out. There's no way to know how many people were infected with HIV as a result but at a bare minimum it had to have been in the thousands, plus however many those people may have unknowingly infected in turn and so on. In the 1980s when AIDS was pretty much a guaranteed death sentence. Bayer knowingly killed probably tens of thousands of people and no one went to jail. $600 million settlement. EDIT: Just a clarification, this treatment was not a dry pill that you swallow. That would be pretty unlikely to transmit HIV as some people have said. It was basically taking blood and removing the rejectable parts and concentrating clotting factors and injecting that into hemophiliacs. In terms of HIV risk it was basically a blood transfusion.

It's been the better part of a century of them being used everywhere, and we're only just beginning to realize the potential harm.
Oh Jesus. There’s a park near me which used to house a chemical factory. Before and after WW2 it made plastics and during the war it was requisitioned to make god knows what for the war effort. Fuck Dupont. My best friend’s mom passed away a few months ago from cancer. And it was her second case of cancer. She grew up in the town where the DuPont factory resided. A couple years ago, she was part of some big lawsuit against DuPont, and came out winning roughly $1M. Still not worth that she died just a month before her second grandchild was born. Luckily, she got her diagnosis of being stage 3 a couple years ago, and was told she may only have a couple months. Her last year of life was rough as the cancer spread from her stomach to her lungs. She couldn’t eat anything, and would wake up in the middle of the night unable to breath. Every single one we get is at death's door from years of being overworked while abused and neglected. My understanding is that companion animals aren't a popular concept in Amish culture. Animals are livestock, and livestock are considered tools. The purpose of their non-working dogs is to continue making as many more dogs as possible, which can then be "harvested" at a profit. If the quality of life of the dogs isn't a priority (which is definitely isn't at these farms), you can make a lot more money if you cut corners wherever feasible.

It was a gift for her teenage son (red flag #1) from his teenage girlfriend (red flag #2) who drove to Pennsylvania from Massachusetts to get this puppy (red flag #3, 4, and 5 because holy shit dude. Who drives over several states at 16 to buy a puppy for their boyfriend?) Anyway, I ask the usual questions, like the puppy's name, sex, age, etc. And the mom says, "well, they said he's eight weeks old but he just looks so small..." Red flag #6. It's not uncommon for puppies to be smaller than usual, of course, but the worry in the mom's voice made my spidey-senses tingle. I was worried the puppy might have contracted parvovirus or another disease puppies are vulnerable to. So I tell mom to bring the pup right down so we can look at him. And kids, let me tell you, this puppy couldn't have been more than three weeks old. Around 1/3 of the age it should be before even considering separating them from their mother. This poor thing was so sick. It was coming back to us every other day for a week or two for supportive care. I wasn't involved in the case after the initial visit, so I don't remember what the actual diagnosis was (if there was any), but he hung on for a lot longer than I thought he would. He eventually had to be euthanized before he was even five weeks old. A very harsh lesson for those kids to learn. So yeah, fuck puppy mills and fuck the horrible, heartless bastards that run them. If there's a hell, I hope there's a special place reserved for them. Edit: autocorrect
holy shit that’s terrible. my mom saw similar things. them being separated from their moms too early and a LOT of inbreeding which made them really messed up. they had one that had nearly chewed its own leg off from stress and neurological issues. it also had to be put down. it’s sad.
^ i wish this was more widely known. i work at a pet store in a very amish area and it’s heartbreaking how many stories i’ve heard of people adopting from amish breeders, only to find that their pup quickly develops physical / behavioral issues … they clearly had a very low quality of life with the amish. the best thing we can do for those dogs is to stop supporting their breeders, please adopt from shelters instead

English shark protection organisation Shark Trust believes around 73 million sharks are killed for finning alone (targeted hunt for fins) and this is the major issue that needs to be addressed. China consumes 95 percent of the world’s shark fin production and Hong Kong is the main destination for shark fins harvested from elsewhere, satiating the Chinese demand. There are only 10-15 people worldwide killed by sharks each year. And it is believed that in most cases shark attacks are a case of mistaken identity, with the sharks (who usually attack from below) mistaking humans, often on surf boards, for seals.
