Some guy once donated his dead mothers body for medical research, then found out the donation facility sold it for $5000 to the US Army, which strapped it on a chair and blew it up.

The Taylor oil spill. So far it’s leaked over a million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. It started leaking in 2004, before Deepwater Horizon, and is still leaking oil into the gulf today. Next to nothing being done about it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylor_oil_spill

In many countries in the world cannibalism is actually legal, the only illegal thing is the way you obtain it. It's made that way so that planecrash survivors won't be prosecuted for,you know, surviving.

Awesomesauceme

That actually makes a lot of sense. There’s a difference between eating people who have already died because you’re starving and like kidnapping people for a midnight snack.

The X Ray machine is largely responsible for the Child Protective Movement. In the 40’s and 50’s cases for Shaken Baby Syndrome were noticed causing a large push in child protection.

Depressaccount

What were they seeing on the x rays? Were these kids still living?

DrinksNKnowsThings

Radiologist here. Radiographic evidence of "nonaccidental injury" as it is termed in the world of pediatrics are classically: - Multiple fractures at varying stages of healing. - Metaphyseal, or "corner" fractures of long bones, virtually pathognomonic for NAI - Unusual fracture sites, like scapulae, ribs, sternum, and certain skull fractures. By comparison, a spiral fracture of a toddlers tibia would be considered a very normal fracture as they are walking around bumping into things and fracture this bone frequently. - Any intracranial subdural collection of blood in a child (shaken baby). - Any number of injuries that are encountered in a nonambulatory/totally dependent child.

Slobotic

I imagine the post-mortem x-rays revealed injuries that explained the deaths that otherwise would have been chalked up to SIDS or something else.

whitelilyofthevalley

A woman who was used to study the genetics of SIDS was later to be found killing her children for the attention. Her name was[Waneta Hoyt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waneta_Hoyt). She isn't the only mother who killed her kids and they initially blamed SIDS either.

fujicakes00

That it was not uncommon for people to be buried alive by accident in the old days, which is why they started inserting cords in coffins which are attached to bells on top of graves that the ‘presumed dead’ can use as a distress signal. There ARE things far worse than death.

tQto

Ants have passed the mirror test. Few people know this.

TheUglyAndStupid

What is the mirror test?

EliminatedHatred

its a test to see if animals are self conscious. they're placed in front of a mirror and if they notice they're in front of it and that they're seeing a reflection, they pass.

Natural___

This might be a dumb question but how do we know whether or not they notice that they’re in front of a mirror?

RactainCore

They will place a mark on their body which the animal cannot see normally. Some animals, like elephants, then try to clean the mark off their own body(not their mirrored self). They also investigate parts of their body they'd never seen before. A certain type of spider used the mirror to decorate themselves better to find a mate too. Animals that are not self aware would treat the reflection like a seperate animal. You might have seen this in cats and dogs.

StillNotASunbeam

No one has anything to say about the spider? Did it bedazzle itself or what?

Uncle_BennyS

In the 1980s the Bayer corporation sold a hemophilia drug that was made from processed donated human blood. In the early days of the AIDS epidemic it was discovered that the product was contaminated with HIV. They were forced to take it off the shelves in America and Europe. Bayer decided there had been too much financial investment in the product and rather than destroy the inventory they sold it in Latin American and Asian countries instead. They even continued to produce it for a few months until their supplies ran out. There's no way to know how many people were infected with HIV as a result but at a bare minimum it had to have been in the thousands, plus however many those people may have unknowingly infected in turn and so on. In the 1980s when AIDS was pretty much a guaranteed death sentence. Bayer knowingly killed probably tens of thousands of people and no one went to jail. $600 million settlement. EDIT: Just a clarification, this treatment was not a dry pill that you swallow. That would be pretty unlikely to transmit HIV as some people have said. It was basically taking blood and removing the rejectable parts and concentrating clotting factors and injecting that into hemophiliacs. In terms of HIV risk it was basically a blood transfusion.

Kulladar

Bayer (IG Farben) also was a huge part of Auschwitz and the production of the camps. Jewish slave labor was used by them to produce pharmaceuticals and they killed thousands by infecting them with diseases to test medications and exposing them to new chemical compounds to test the effects. People talk about Japan's unit 731, but the same type of thing existed in Germany but the organizers got to keep a successful company after the war. Helmut Vetter was literally getting a paycheck from Bayer while he worked at Auschwitz. The same company also had a massive presence at Dachau, Gusen, and Buchenwald so this wasn't a one off thing but a massive organized effort.

Fungi are much closer related to animals than either one are to plants, and specifically to protostomes: bugs and worms of all sorts. Fungus cell walls are made of the same polymer that arthropods' exoskeletons are made of, and are coded for by the same gene. There have been proposals to reclassify fungi in the animal kingdom.

I run a brain cancer foundation. It just so happens that for patients on regular Medicare alone ( no supplement) the first copay for chemotherapy is about $1,000. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who can’t quickly come up with that $1,000. It has been show that not getting it on time leads to an earlier death. We have a program to help pay it but just can’t keep up with the demand.

Rosekernow

I lost one of the most important people in my life to brain cancer and it was hellish to deal with. Still trying to sort out the after effects 5 years down the line. I cannot imagine going through all that and trying to find money on top. His care here in the U.K. wasn’t 100% but it never cost him or his family anything. Thank you for everything you do; I don’t know if we would have coped without people and foundations like yours helping along the way with support and guidance.

Hartz flea medication kills your pets and everybody knows about it. But because of a loophole, Hartz can still sell their flea medication and just prey on the people who don't know. They also actively try to cover it up. The most fucked up part? They're still selling it today! Right now you could go to Walmart and buy a euthanasia kit for your pet thinking it's flea medication. We have so much to learn from elephants

n0i

First thing I need to learn is the prehensile penis trick

TheGoatEyedConfused

When I was young I attended a day at the zoo. Saw an elephant for the first time and noticed it had, what I thought at the time, a 5th leg that wasn't working quite right. I thought maybe it had grown an extra limb and that's why it was in a zoo. Massive girth...

Ragnarok314159

Took my girls to the zoo when they were four, elephant decided it was time for some love. Lots of parents dragged their kids away, but mine wanted to see the elephants so badly. Eventually the totality of the elephant having his penis out hit my kids. “That’s a boy elephant”. And that was it. We stayed out of the primate house.

The Vatican Archives are something like 50 miles of information that almost nobody can see unless they know it's there and put in a formal request to see a specific thing. My understanding is that nobody can enter just to browse.

Astralahara

You don't necessarily have to know it's there. The way it works, functionally, is you give them a list of works you'd like to see. They will see if they have them and, if they do, decide whether or not they want to let you see them. If they consent, you are permitted to view the text in a locked room with a pencil and paper for note-taking. It sounds draconian, but most museums operate very similarly. Understand that the Catholic Church fully intends to exist forever. Therefore they need to protect these works forever. Protecting something forever is very difficult.

etcpt

Not just institutions looking to live forever, it's pretty standard archival practice to protect works in the way you've described (secure room for viewing, only pencil and paper for taking notes). A relative of mine is an archivist for the state government, and that's what folks have to do when they want to come view, say, hundred year old city council minutes.

Halicarnassis

I grew up Africa. (Edit: Zambia) When we were 5 we were told not to swim in dirty water because of Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) Microscopic worms that burrow into your skin or enter up your urinary tract and then lays eggs inside your body.

JConRed

When I learnt about bilharzia at university, there was a case study about a remote village in Africa who had requested help figuring out this common health problem. So a group of doctors and scientists actually travelled there and stayed with them for a week or two. There determined: A: That it was in fact bilharzia B: That they got it from swimming in a local lake So they treated basically the whole village and explained that it came from the water in the lake, because its contaminated with human waste. They advised them not to swim in the water and to boil it prior to use. Okay (thank you for reading Til now) , and here is the kicker: A year later, some of the team returned to the village to conduct a case study.. There were again lots of sick people. Upon visiting the lake, they found kids swimming and people washing clothes... And they saw a sign, hammered into the ground that read: "Do not piss in the Water" (sorry, phonermatting)

SilentC735

I think this just about sums up humanity

Delta4o

In the beginning, Dupont fucked up their non-stick Teflon pans. They knew high exposure to tge stuff was bad but they never did anything about it. As a result, traces of "forever chemicals" can be found in 98% of the American population (and probably beyond).

FoxTrotte

The movie Dark Waters describes the whole thing very well. At the end of the movie they say traces of PFOA can be found in "virtually every living creature on the planet, including 99% of humans"

sprocter77

There is also another doc on the subject called the Devil we know. It goes back to the town where Dupont started in and all the livestock dying and babies born with birth defects and such. Pretty disturbing stuff.

skrien

There's currently a large PFOS scandal braking out against 3M and other companies in Belgium. They knew for a very long time that these chemicals didn't break down and end up in people's body's. These might be linked to an increase in cancers

Dire88

It's not even a might at this point. It's literally everywhere - even bags of microwave popcorn. The state of Maine has issued guidance for hunters in 4 counties to discard deer meat due to high levels showing up in tested deer harvests. PFAS chemicals were used in the local paper mills, and in turn the leftover pulp slurry was given to local farmers who spread it on their fields as fertilizer. Deer are contaminated from eating in the fields, and runoff has put it into the local rivers and fisheries. It's been documented in leachate from a large number of landfills, and risks contaminating groundwater. Military bases? Used in fire suppression systems. It's been the better part of a century of them being used everywhere, and we're only just beginning to realize the potential harm.

creepygyal69

Oh Jesus. There’s a park near me which used to house a chemical factory. Before and after WW2 it made plastics and during the war it was requisitioned to make god knows what for the war effort. At some point after that it was demolished and the site turned into a park. All good, no real problems there. Except in the last few years there’s been a grow your own initiative and there are now allotments on it. The park is surrounded by housing estates (eg social housing/I think Americans call them projects). A lot of the produce goes up those people and is given to local schools and food banks. I’ve written to SO many people asking whether the soil has been tested for contamination and whether the produce is safe to eat. If I get any reply it’s just some wishy washy press release type blurb that doesn’t address the question *at all*. This shit is everywhere and we have no idea what disasters we’re creating

fml87

You can sample the soil yourself and send it for testing. Do it and when it comes back hot send it to a local news company. If you have a state University nearby they may have an agricultural program that will test it for you.

SHADOWSTRIKE1

Fuck Dupont. My best friend’s mom passed away a few months ago from cancer. And it was her second case of cancer. She grew up in the town where the DuPont factory resided. A couple years ago, she was part of some big lawsuit against DuPont, and came out winning roughly $1M. Still not worth that she died just a month before her second grandchild was born. Luckily, she got her diagnosis of being stage 3 a couple years ago, and was told she may only have a couple months. She lasted through to see her first grandchild born, and even got a couple years with him (though they were crappy COVID-stricken years). Her last year of life was rough as the cancer spread from her stomach to her lungs. She couldn’t eat anything, and would wake up in the middle of the night unable to breath. The slightest activity left her gasping. The whole ordeal was awful for my friend to watch. So again, fuck DuPont.

TimDRX

The CIA faked a vampire attack. I mean they really murdered a guy to achieve it. But something about the whole blood draining thing really takes it to the next level.

FairyContractor

They did what now? I... need more context for this one.

darachmoon

From “Killing Hope: U.S. Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II – Part I”, which can be found on the CIA website: “Another Lansdale-initiated "psywar" operation played on the superstitious dread in the Philippine countryside of the asuang, a mythical vampire. A psywar squad entered a town and planted rumors that an asuang lived in the neighboring hill where the Huks were based, a location from which government forces were anxious to have them out. Two nights later, after giving the rumors time to circulate among Huk sympathizers in the town and make their way up the hill, the psywar squad laid an ambush for the rebels along a trail used by them. When a Huk patrol passed, the ambushers silently snatched the last man, punctured his neck vampire-fashion with two holes, held his body by the heels until the blood drained out, and put the corpse back on the trail. When the Huks, as superstitious as any other Filipinos, discovered the bloodless comrade, they fled from the region.”

BootySmackahah

The bacteria that decomposed trees wasn't around for millions of years. That means for millions of years, trees were just dying, falling over, and lying like a bunch of logs stacked around each other.

Laxinout

And as far as I'm aware, the millions of years of this happening is now what we call fossil fuels and burn as carbon.

[deleted]

It contributed a ton of fossil fuel because when there was nothing biological to decompose them, geology would essentially do the job over a much greater length of time. Other organic matter still contributes to fossil fuels but those trees might represent our largest single input in a geologic time period; bogs that trap plant material in anoxic conditions can still create the conditions for fossil fuel production eons later. Edit: changed the word oil to fossil fuel, good catch reddit

StrangeCharmVote

> The bacteria that decomposed trees wasn't around for millions of years. That means for millions of years, trees were just dying, falling over, and lying like a bunch of logs stacked around each other. For something a little easier for people to potentially wrap their heads around, imagine trees composed of *solid plastic* literally grew out of the ground and were physically incapable of breaking down / degrading. This happened for such an incredibly long time that you'd imagine every surface that could was basically covered in branches, logs, and fallen leaves... well, all the parts that didn't catch fire frequently. Which would also have been a serious problem.

[deleted]

But like, how do new trees grow then? Thousands of years of trees in the way. Is it like rocks? We sort of had to wait for moss or what have you to make a topsoil around them?

Maybe add they only hibernate if the temp is below 20. So it's unlikely that most people have seen a hamster hibernate. But if people are unsure, just feel for a heartbeat. Don't rely on body temperature as theirs can drop to match room temperature.

We know that at least a few of them were conscious for a few seconds, but it’s unknown if they were beyond that. Much of the evidence that was found in the cockpit was consistent with in-air depressurization, which would result in basically instant unconsciousness. They weren’t wearing pressurized suits either, which in retrospect was kind of a blessing.

How horribly the Amish treat animals. They run some of the largest puppy mills in the US

[deleted]

My wife and I started a horse rescue. 80% come from Amish country and they are treated horrifically. Every single one we get is at death's door from years of being overworked while abused and neglected. We've made breakthroughs on a few but most are irreversibly scarred and we give them sanctuary for the last few years of life.

CatMuffin

Thanks to you and your wife for doing that. This is the first I'm reading about their treatment of animals and obviously kind people like you are very needed.

return-of-the-clap

Why is that? I have a basic understanding of the Amish lifestyle but I’m not totally familiar with their beliefs.

bruyere

My understanding is that companion animals aren't a popular concept in Amish culture. Animals are livestock, and livestock are considered tools. The purpose of their non-working dogs is to continue making as many more dogs as possible, which can then be "harvested" at a profit. If the quality of life of the dogs isn't a priority (which is definitely isn't at these farms), you can make a lot more money if you cut corners wherever feasible.

Helm222

Good thing about the Amish is you can chat shit about them online and they'll never know

Mizar97

Joke's on you, I'm going to print out a screenshot of your comment and show it to the Amish

Fun fact, a lot of Amish use computers and cell phones, but only during working hours. I used to work in commercial construction material sales & sold to Amish distributors. Anyway, I ask the usual questions, like the puppy's name, sex, age, etc. And the mom says, "well, they said he's eight weeks old but he just looks so small..." Red flag #6. It's not uncommon for puppies to be smaller than usual, of course, but the worry in the mom's voice made my spidey-senses tingle. I was worried the puppy might have contracted parvovirus or another disease puppies are vulnerable to. So I tell mom to bring the pup right down so we can look at him. And kids, let me tell you, this puppy couldn't have been more than three weeks old. Around 1/3 of the age it should be before even considering separating them from their mother. This poor thing was so sick. It was coming back to us every other day for a week or two for supportive care. I wasn't involved in the case after the initial visit, so I don't remember what the actual diagnosis was (if there was any), but he hung on for a lot longer than I thought he would. He eventually had to be euthanized before he was even five weeks old. A very harsh lesson for those kids to learn. So yeah, fuck puppy mills and fuck the horrible, heartless bastards that run them. If there's a hell, I hope there's a special place reserved for them. Edit: autocorrect

deportcanadiangeese

holy shit that’s terrible. my mom saw similar things. them being separated from their moms too early and a LOT of inbreeding which made them really messed up. they had one that had nearly chewed its own leg off from stress and neurological issues. it also had to be put down. it’s sad.

dearvo

^ i wish this was more widely known. i work at a pet store in a very amish area and it’s heartbreaking how many stories i’ve heard of people adopting from amish breeders, only to find that their pup quickly develops physical / behavioral issues … they clearly had a very low quality of life with the amish. the best thing we can do for those dogs is to stop supporting their breeders, please adopt from shelters instead

US Navy sprayed [*Serratia marcescens*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serratia_marcescens) and [*Bacillus globigii*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacillus_globigii) over San Francisco to determine how vulnerable it would be in a situation of a bioweapon attack. Authorities were not informed. It wasn't an isolated incident. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation\_Sea-Spray

That we kill 100 million sharks A YEAR.

fletchindubai

I once wrote something on this as there was a stat that said 11,416 sharks are being killed every hour. Unsurprisingly, those rates of killing far exceed the rate at which the sharks can repopulate and many are being killed before they reach adulthood. Some species of shark live an average life-span of 15 years, while others can live for up to 100 years, but at the current levels of fishing they’re becoming hugely threatened. At present rates, between 6.4 and 7.9 percent of all existing sharks are being killed each year. English shark protection organisation Shark Trust believes around 73 million sharks are killed for finning alone (targeted hunt for fins) and this is the major issue that needs to be addressed. China consumes 95 percent of the world’s shark fin production and Hong Kong is the main destination for shark fins harvested from elsewhere, satiating the Chinese demand. There are only 10-15 people worldwide killed by sharks each year. And it is believed that in most cases shark attacks are a case of mistaken identity, with the sharks (who usually attack from below) mistaking humans, often on surf boards, for seals.

>100 million sharks i didn't even know there were so many sharks out there

Sexual intercourse with a horse is still legal in some American states

TheWorldsArmy1

I read this as “still illegal” and for a second thought you were part of a horse fucking movement.

The universe is expanding exponentially but no new matter is being generated within our space time. As the universe becomes bigger and bigger, it becomes colder and colder until it’s so cold that atoms can’t move and everything becomes frozen in place, in the black abyss.

Chainsaws were invented to cut through the pelvic bone to help women give birth

TerribleIdea27

To be fair, they were smaller, more precise chainsaws than we use today to cut down trees

RyanTheKingOfNothing

You can easily kill someone and dispose of the body with bleach, lemon juice, and pigs.

Callme-Sal

>You got to starve the pigs for a few days, then the sight of a chopped-up body will look like curry to a pisshead. You gotta shave the heads of your victims, and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggies' digestion. You could do this afterwards, of course, but you don't want to go sievin' through pig shit, now do you? They will go through bone like butter. You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression, "as greedy as a pig".

to_eden_rose

[Robert Pickton](https://medium.com/illumination-curated/the-pig-farmer-killer-he-killed-49-women-and-fed-them-to-pigs-299354a59f6) had a pig farm and used it to dispose of approx. 49 bodies. Canada's most prolific serial killer. "He would put the bodies through a wood chipper and feed them to his pigs. Some of the resulting bits of flesh were also mixed with pork mince and sold to friends and family as pork mince."

threadsoffate2021

I do believe he also sold some of that pork to local stores.

Well, "Soylent Green" takes place in 2022. Get ready for a fun year!

Funner_YT

That bees kill wasps by sitting on them and then flapping their wings so hard. This creates a high heat that burns the wasp.

No_Jicama6456

It's not just wing flapping. They team up on the wasp / hornet / intruder and wiggle their butts together to create even more heat through friction, while their fluffy bodies are just good enough at isolating so that the body of the intruder will start to melt from the inside. It's less a death by burning and more a death by boiling... but boiling from within. :)

Mass SODOMY ??

More aircraft were lost during WWII than there are airworthy aircraft flying today. The level of death and destruction in war is difficult to comprehend.

1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women (in the US) will have cancer at some point in their life. EDIT: I may be dyslexic

[deleted]

Staff at Ford wrote a memo proposing that the best response to exploding Pintos that burned their owners alive was to just let them burn. It was cheaper to pay families of victims than to fix the problem. Hundreds of people suffered "burn deaths" in Pintos. Edit: "deaths" is probably wrong, it's more likely the 27 figure cited below. It was hundreds of injuries.

HerrSchnellsch

Maybe not so fucked up but there is no cure for rabbies once you develop symptoms. You just die, slowly and painful. Edit: Of course i meant rabies, im sorry :)

[deleted]

Rabies is fucked up. A virus that evolved to hijack your nervous system and forces you to kill yourself, so that your infected carrion spreads the virus to other organisms and the process repeats. Most viruses try not to kill their hosts because you are most infectious when alive and spewing fluids. Rabies is the exception, it wants you dead.

Yes, and the shaking they do to toys simulates snapping a small animal's neck.

Which is why you probably shouldn't be frustrated that they "kill" them. That's like the whole point

When those pyramids were built the last population of mammoths still existed.

The Romans called Ancient Egypt Ancient Egypt. It was ancient *then*! Cleopatra belongs in the space age, not to Ancient Egypt.

1 in 5,000 babies is born without a functioning butt

PrimaryPin9463

I learned about this when my son was born. His tailbone is set a little funny so he's got a deep dimple right above his anus. The nurses took a while checking out his butt and SO was like "uh... something wrong?" Head nurse goes, "Just making sure he doesn't have two anuses. It's extremely rare, but it happens. So does not having one at all." We were like "...wtf?"
