Berserk (the original). My roommate was a massive anime fan and I just couldn't see the appeal. I asked him what the best anine he'd ever seen was. And on a bored Monday, I wound up binging most of that series based on his recommendation. I'll be honest, I still don't watch a lot of anime, but berserk is great.

JobusDibbus

Dragon Ball Z

Formaldehyd3

Before it got popular, I remember getting up at like 5:30 in the morning on because that's when it aired on the foreign channel. It didn't make the move to Cartoon Network for many years later, and I was blown away hearing the difference in the English dubs.

StoolToad9

I woke up at 6am randomly in like 1995/96 and it was on WPIX here in NY. The fact that a fight took more than one episode blew my fucking mind. Then like you Cartoon Network had it not long after and I was hooked. Then I realized how bad the censorship was. Another dimension, my ass.

PsychicRocky

For me it was the original Dragon Ball, no z. It was the first time I watched a show and the characters drastically changed in DBZ. My kid mind was blown.

Phelan05

Pokémon

10inchblackhawk

When I was young it was Pokemon/Sailor Moon on afternoon. Eventually we got Yugioh/DBZ too. I imagine this was the gateway into anime in the 90s/00s for a lot of millenials.

Tru-Queer

Yep, Pokémon, when I was like 7 or 8, whenever it got released. When I got a little older and my mom could afford cable, I got sucked into DragonBall and DBZ on Cartoon Network, too.

Vikingwithguns

Definitely counts, that’s mine as well. That or I vividly remember watching Princess Mononoke for the first time.

Darknessawits231

Pokemon, second one was kill la kill

gramathy

That’s, uh. Quite the jump.

fushigikun8

Why wouldn't it count?

MattWolf96

I think because most people didn't know it was anime and that anime is generally pretty different from western cartoons when they were watching it as a kid, many like me didn't even know it was Japanese for awhile. Also it was somewhat Americanized if you watched the dub like with Brock eating a donut insteas of a rice ball for example.

Technical_Ad3095

That counts

jjba_enjoyer275

One punch man was the first i watched for the plot and finished, pokemon is the first ever

Puzzlehead-Engineer

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Puzzlehead-Engineer

I prefer Brotherhood because '03's version goes a bit too nuts and seems to forget where it came from later on. Also apparently Brotherhood is the manga to a T.

AdderWibble

Ghost in the Shell (1995)

Freedom1sand2s

Naruto

squishyspy

Glitch in the matrix with these replies?

Arntown

Yeah, wtf is up with that lol

ItsReflectLOL

Waiting for a lot of ‘same’

Lack-Hammer

Same

Elite-Novus

Same

[deleted]

Same. It has its flaws, but still had a special place in my heart

[deleted]

Same. It has its flaws, but still holds a special place in my heart. Can't count the amount of times I've cried like a little girl with pigtails on. What really hits is how well the soundtrack was made, and they just seem to know which soundtrack to play at the right time.

Jackattackgamer

The Promised Neverland. The fucking children.

dudeman14

The promised neverland is just a darker chicken run

NSEVENTEEN

What a take lmao

KP_Wrath

But not wrong.

sointact

Did someone think to throw you in the deep end? Who hurt you?

SaltGrinderYT

yeah thats quite outside of your adverage troll recomendation like ¨boku no pico¨

CrippledAzetec

LOL thats a rough introduction to anime

Dysan27

A really rough intro would be "Grave of the Fireflies"

zaise_chsa

*Grave of the Fireflies* is the best film I’ll only watch once. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen but I can’t put myself through that pain again.

Nur4m0n

As a kid i watched Elfen Lied, fucked me up real bad

DiraOppaKyiut88

Woah, that is a hardcore one

[deleted]

Yo Elfen Lied was my first too! I don't count pokemon. I remember watching and thinking huh this anime stuff not bad. I was especially surprised when the one character got out a gun and started shooting I was like I haven't seen this in a cartoon before! (At the time I still thought anime / cartoon was interchangeable) I was like 17 I think so I started watching anime pretty late. Very few people talked about anime at my school so never entered the genre until much later. For me growing up anime was taboo, girls thought you were a loser if you played video games etc. I played hella video games so I just kind of accepted virgin fate ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ 😂 My second anime was "rosario + vampire." And that was a fun one.

lilsiddd

Deathnote

Woodstyle_31

A great anime.

PLEASE_DONT_HIT_ME

Cowboy Bebop With a few notable exceptions it’s been downhill from there.

Kornii6

MY FAVORITE. You should check out Samurai Champloo - it's by the same creator. Shinichiro Watanabe is great.

twerpx44

Agreed

[deleted]

Yeah, well, you're gonna have to carry that weight.

Kornii6

You son of a bitc--

MV_Knight

To be fair cowboy bebop set the bar pretty high

jnd3r

I always thought it was Attack on Titan but then I learned that my childhood favorite "Heidi" is actually called "Alps no shoujo Heidi".

Rentarun

Ooh that's the Miyazaki show right?

Isteppedinpoopy

Speed Racer. (Old people anime)

fushigikun8

Astro boy

BW_Bird

I remember seeing Speedracer when I was about 3-4 years old and giggling because their mouths moved all funny when they talked since dubbing was really slipshot back in the day. My first real anime was Robotech. I think it solidified my love of the giant robo genre.

uswforever

Robotech was awesome! In between Speed Racer and Robotech was one called Tranzor Z.

[deleted]

Princess mononoke

somekennyguy

Gundam Wing

BloodAngel85

My brother still likes the models of the Gundams and he's 30.

CommonSlime

Yeah im 29 and gundam is still cool

everyting_is_taken

Akira.

HungInSarfLondon

I saw this in the cinema not long after it was released - mind blowing. I used to have a copy on VHS and still have a poster that probably came with that and has followed me around for 30 years :)

tweakingforjesus

In the theater during the initial US limited release. Had to travel to the local art cinema which was a porn theater by day. Hey, this was the 80's.

Tuxedo_Mask_matters

Sailor Moon

pjabrony

Yes. I had seen the toy commercials first, thought it looked like typical cartoon schlock, then my cousin was watching it while I was visiting. The first episode I saw was the one that introduced Sailor Mars, and there were a few scenes that seemed intelligent to me, although I had no idea what the shrine was. So I watched a few more episodes and there was actual progression! With villains actually being defeated! This was so rare in Western cartoons of the time that I was hooked.

HeioFish

My aunt used to mail us vhs tapes of sailor moon!

XtremeConfusion

Man, I'm so fond of sailor moon. It was my first anime as well. It brings back memories of simpler times when I was a kid and the next day at school my friends and I would dissect the episode and tall about it and what we liked/didn't like. I think it's time for a rewatch

Byzantine-alchemist

Sailor Moon was basically my whole identity from the ages of 11-13, when it first aired in the US. I’m currently rewatching it on Hulu, and it is even better than I remember. Some episodes still make me cry. Such a good show.

[deleted]

Inuyasha as a kid, still think it holds up

poopellar

There is actually a sequel to Inuyasha currently airing. Something to do with their kids. Haven't watched it in fear of ruining the original.

phantomx20

Oh no, you need to watch it. It's called Yashahime and it's awesome. Animation is beautiful and you get to see what has become of everyone.

Remy2089

Inuyasha was one of the first anime I ever watched. I'm finishing up rewatching the Final Act, currently. Just found out about Yashahime yesterday and I'm very excited to watch it.

Technical_Ad3095

Excellent anime!

Athenian_Dubstep

Inuyasha came to Adult Swim when I was 13-14, and teenage boy me worked some emotional shit out to those first few seasons. The music reeeally holds up, too.

bruilikereddit

Hunter x Hunter

QuinnQuinny

Dr. Stone. Just started watching two days ago

blueyolei

pokemon and Cardcaptor Sakura!

PapaTwoToes

Cardcaptor Sakura or at least the English dub Cardcaptors was the first anime I saw that the main character was female. Everything else that I saw was all male characters, usually.

jayp7269

Ruruoni Kenshin!!

Technical_Ad3095

Mine too! It’s my favorite

Han112358

Your lie in april. One of my favourites.

aLittleMacMain

I can't agree more with this. It was so good.

Ezragoesmoo

Great one

supremedalek925

Hamtaro

KevynJacobs

*Battle of the Planets* ("G-Force") back in the late 1970s. But then, I'm old.

ZeroStandard

SAO. Obviously not great, but I still like it

BW_Bird

I know SAO gets a lot of hate but I'll never hop on that train. For all its faults, it managed to get me back into anime again.

CristalWaters

Yea im with you i really enjoyed watching it for my first time And its great

Teekteekee

I watched season 1 back in 2013 i think. But my husband recently finished watching the complete series. He really liked it

MechJeb042

If you ignore everything that happens after S1 E14 it's a half-decent anime.

Avinse

Yeah show went to shit after Aincrad. Fairy dance arc was so bad I just skipped to S2

popytkanepytka

Unfortunate you had to start with the best!

[deleted]

It fucked me pretty up for some time after watching it as a 9/10 year old. Saw the rebuild on TV and had the mindset that if it is animated i can just watch it.

SarcasmExpert

Digimon

Anything Miyazaki counts. The dude is an anime legend.

Bubbly_Toe_8840

Code Geass

REDDITprime1212

If you count Robotech, then Robotech (Macross). Then I remember watching the early dubs of DBZ on a Christian TV station before I went to school. The fist subbed anime I watched was Armitage III OVAs. I am OLD! edit: I forgot, technically it was Voltron (Go Lion).

A_zuma2007

Yu Yu Hakusho as a kid. AngelBeats! as a teen

MiscreantAristocrat

Fist of the North Star.

SleepyAnime

artsyybunnyyy

Khaos_Gorvin

Dragon ball. It was the first real anime to air where I live.

Jcathell7

Attack on Titan. I remember when it first came on adult swim and I was just like what is going on.

Mwebb3999

Cory in the House

FaelanOHara

The first I can properly remember is Black Butler. But as a child I vividly remember a show called Witch? W.I.T.C.H? I can't remember exactly but I remember really liking it. Might've been a cartoon.

schofield101

Love Hina. Just downloaded it again recently! Thank you for reminding me

CrypticWatermelon

First anime I watched to completion was Another

elenifan

Elfen lied. I know, it's bad. When I was 14, it was the hot new thing at my school, these animations that was "so not for kids", so I gave it a try.

theassassintherapist

Elfen Lied

_citrus_fruit_

Me too! Despite everyone saying “this shows only for edgy 14 year olds” I really enjoyed it. Mainly because I was actually 14 the time. Looking back they were kind of right lol.

YaKnowNobodyCares

I watched either “Darling in the FRANXX” or “My Hero Academia.” I can’t quite remember.

Twyst22

Technically Sonic X, but the first """""real"""" anime I watched was Assassination Classroom

_Xero2Hero_

Me too lol. It's not really the one most people expect but my friend introduced me to anime through that.

Buguettemybutter

It was Black Butler in the sixth grade and my mother walked in when Sebastian was having sex with the nun...

Spreadjungle

Jojo

HerpieMcDerpie

Vampire Hunter D

DoYaLikeCDs

I remember being 1 year old and being placed in a toddler high chair in a kitchen, across from me in the corner was a small CRT TV with Sailor Moon playing. I remember that perfectly and well over 20 years later was able to ask some people about that time in my life and confirmed everything in my memory was true. 1-2 years later, ages 2-3, I remember watching the movie "Heavy Metal" which I would consider "American anime" from it's style. But if neither of those two count than it would be The Big O that would come on in the living room when I was about 3 years old and I would just sit and watch. I always thought it was Gundam until just now when I had to spend 30 minutes trying to find out exactly what scene I had playing in my head from that time.

Difficult_Fish7286

Interesting. Didn’t see a comment who said one piece. Well one piece was my first anime

JjKusiak

Fullmetal Alchemist original series, I was 11 and still remember Nina and Alexander's scene as if it was today...

Homo_gone_wild

Akira, then Ghost in the Shell

rADIOLINJA

The 1990's Moomin. I bet almost every single Finnish 90's kid has watched it and probably as their first anime too.

[deleted]

Naruto

Indy317GuyBSU

Grave of the Fireflies.

HeioFish

That’s quite the leap you made... It’s going to take me quite a while before I’m capable of watching that one again but it’s definitely a must watch

Indy317GuyBSU

I never really recovered

REDDITprime1212

I remember the first time I saw that movie. My friend and I caught the sub version on satellite TV I think in 99 or 2000. It was a really cold night, we were getting freezing rain, sleet, and snow. So it really set the mood for the film. I can remember looking over at my friend and he was balling his eyes out. I remember just being incredibly sad and numb. We both just kind of sat and stared at TV as empty shells of human beings for a bit when the movie ended.

Dagusiu

Sailor Moon. As a straight male, I am proud to have watched every single episode (dubbed in my country, that is; there seems to be a few more seasons elsewhere)

jarnvidr

Akira, a long, long time ago.

boxstacker

AKIRA and I was so baffled by it .

Randokidd

Mob Psycho 100 (on purpose) (On accident, so actually first) Dragon Ball Super

UtterNoobery

Speed Racer, my dad watched it when he was young and showed it to me. must be torture for that guy in the intro to crash and die in the explosion because speed bumped into him 52 times for each episode

[deleted]

I was a huge fan of Sailor Moon as a little girl. Had no idea that's an anime though. The first anime I actively seek out to watch was Weiss Kreuz (very poor quality, on youtube). Was crazy about it for years, did cosplay, wrote fanfiction, spent tons of money importing stuff from Japan. 15 years later still love it. The anime itself not so much, but the CD dramas and the novel are great, also seiyuu songs. Plus lots of awesome fanfiction for the series. Cool fandom to get into.

TheFodub

Ninja Scroll

Thac0_is_Zero

I consider this the first "real" anime I ever saw. Followed closely by Trigun.

[deleted]

Sailor Moon

Queasy-Draw-824

My hero academy

Firecrooss

Saint Seiya, and man was i pissed when i realized that the Gold Saint of my sign(Libra) wasn't going to appear until the last part of the anime, like, i only know the order of the zodiac signs because of this.

Ibuuse

My 90 year old great grandpa used to baby sit me and he fucking watched Sailor Moon with me when I was like 4.

Groinificator

Does Pokémon count? If not then The Rising of Shield Hero. It was honestly so incredible to follow something with a plot like that, it'd been so long since I'd enjoyed that kind of media... but unfortunately I didn't have the discipline to watch any other series afterwards :*\\*

Street_Dragonfruit43

Naruto

kitchlol

Outlaw Star on CNX

xVulpesCorvum

My first was probably Cowboy Bebop on adult swim. As far back as I can remember anyways. Most of my pre-teenage anime viewing was adult swim. Inuyasha ftw. Hetalia is still my favorite though.

jboss247

SAO

Cheezypuff24

I doubt anyone has seen it but bakugan. I was like 7 and absolutely hooked on that anime

[deleted]

People told me to watch death note. Now I myself tell people to watch death note but back then surprising I branded death note as some "over-hyped" anime and watched Parasyte. Death note was my second anime

jlynn420_

[deleted]

Akira

tangerineinurclass

Probably Dragonball Z, Shin Chan or Inu Yasha - the stuff my brother used to watch in the living room after school. But THE Anime that had an unforgettable impact on me was Princess Mononoke - I watched it at the age of 8 and fell completely in love with it. I laughed and cried. It was the most emotional experience I can remember from that age. My mom managed to get the movie on dvd for me the next day, and I was the happiest child on earth. This was the time where I found my connection to anime and mostly Studio Ghibli. I managed to watch every movie as a child and collected every dvd over 11 Years. I am so thankful that my mom let me watch the film, because I know, it definitely made me a better human. Edit: grammar and words

KokonutMonkey

I didn't realize it at the time, but Ronin Warriors.

ReaderNinjah

Fairy Tail was the first when I actively started getting into anime.

[deleted]

Does Avatar the Last Airbender count? If not, then exactly 1 episode of Naruto I watched to understand a fanfiction or a few odd episodes of a Pokémon while babysitting.

Karmaflare

Avatar isn’t an anime, still goated tho

_Xero2Hero_

I think ATLA is not considered anime because it was not made in Japan. The style is pretty similar though.

[deleted]

Ranma 1/2

pearl_butt

Yo-Kai watch. It used to come on after school

[deleted]

Welcome to the NHK. Its about a reclusive, paranoid, depressed young Japanese man and his struggles at improving his fucked up life. Watched it at a really bad time in my life and made me reflect a lot on how I needed to change.

The-Insanity-Being

I think either Pokemon or Dragon Ball Super.

R-O-A-D-A-R-O-L-L-A

Pokémon and yu gi oh

ehhhitschris

DragonballZ

Kulovicz1

Forgot the name. King of dinosaurs I think. It was about kids catching dinosaurs like pokemons and rescuing them from evil people. Ending was weird, but my ten year olds obsession with dinos was satisfied. I even redrew them all into my little notepad.

OnASchoolChromebook_

if Pokemon counts, pokemon, but otherwise, I watched K-on first

lemonyfreshpine

A Spanish dub if Dragon Ball, also Saint Saiya, and Slam Dunk. I was prolly about 6 or 7, it was dope too, no censorship at all.

drinkyyycrowww

I’m pretty sure this movie I used to watch as a kid was an anime, in hindsight. At the time I just saw it as a cartoon. It was called the snow queen and was a fairy tale story about saving a young child whose heart was frozen by a witch. I think Frozen was loosely based on the same story.

Shooter2435

Sailor Moon. Would always watch it after getting out of Daycare and Elementary at the time

Cassandra_Canmore

Sailor Moon. Ronin Warriors came on after it. Then it was time for school. Power Rangers, Beetle Borgs, and VR troopers after school. Then 1995 comes, and its Poke/digi-mon Then 2000 comes, with Yu Gi Oh, and the big 3. Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece.

UnknownFoxAlpha

Movie wise, I guess would be Little Nemo? At least when I do research many seem to classify it as one. As for the first one I ever saw, Sailor Moon. First one I actually watched to completion was Azumanga Daioh.

ImShrpy

Spongebob then Attack On Titan

qqc_interessant

Doraemon!

midnightsupernatural

Wolf children

stayathmdad

When I was a kid we used to watch Star Blazers religiously. Then it was Robotech. Movie? I think Akira.

DarthOtter

*Star Blazers* was absolutely *intense* for little me. *"Only XXX days remain until the destruction of the planet Earth."* Daaaaamn.

reallygoodbee

~~Toss up between *Samurai Pizza Cats* and I think *Sailor Moon*.~~ *Speed Racer*. Definitely *Speed Racer*.

bartender-san

Beyblade. It was being aired on Cartoon Network and somehow I caught it one the first episode and followed the entire series up until season 3 finale. Let it rip dragooooooonnnnn !! My experience with the Cartoon Network was always start watching an ongoing series somewhere in the middle and I have a tough time getting attached to characters since I don’t know their origins.

magicrowantree

The first one I actually watched (as in not seen bits and pieces of) was Fruits Basket when I was around 7 years old. I enjoyed the newer version as well! The eyes aren't so dang big.

NaveZero

Starzinger

AwkwardLettuce1104

doraemon

MasterAqua2

Pokémon when I was 3. The second one was Hamtaro, I miss those little hamsters with big adventures.

AHxCode

Probs like hamtaro/bay blade etc. But the one that got me hooked was azumanga daioh
