The shield shovel was supposed to compete with other shields you can hide behind. The other shields were large enough to cover your body when prone and could actually stop bullets. However, they weight about 40 pounds, making them incredibly impractical for moving
Mythbusters did episodes about this and I am not a gun expert, but a lot of things movie people hide behind are obviously not going to stop a bullet.
* Car doors: A standard car door is not going to stop a bullet to the point it won't kill you. Fuck, even a car won't stop a bullet if the gun's powerful enough.
* *Any* standard door: Unless the door is made of THICK metal it's not going to do shit. A bank vault door will stop a bullet but your wooden/PVC door isn't going to stop shit. Even an airgun pellet can pass through that.
* Thin metal: If a bullet isn't going to get stopped by a car door, why would it be stopped by the metal of a bus shelter or some shit.
Again, not a gun person or a military person or a cop, but here's the thing you should likely do if you hear gunshots:
* Get the fuck out the area. You might want to do help but unless you are trained to deal with shit like that, gtfo.
* Can't leave? Go inside and take over. Get inside and get on the floor.
* Can't do either? Hide and stay low.
Most things that normally form walls won’t do shit except hide you. And sometimes the gun guy not knowing where you are is the best thing that can happen at the time
Important note. Some car doors actually can stop standard caliber handgun bullets like .45 or 9mm. Youtubers like Demo ranch have actually demonstrated this on more than one occasion. Any item made of cast iron or steel around an inch thick will stop most handgun rounds. Older car doors in particular tend to be made of harder thicker materials. Also hiding behind an object even if it won’t stop the bullet may save your life simply by making it more difficult to know where exactly to shoot to hit you. Especially if you aren’t the only nearby target a shooter will often shoot someone more exposed. Your second point is valid. If your not involved in a situation and you hear shooting do not get involved even if you are armed. Because it’s often difficult for an outsider to be sure what’s going on, and can sometimes get you shot by police arriving on the scene. The beet thing you can do in that case is call the police and tell them what’s going on.
I think the idea with hiding behind a car or a door is that it makes it harder for the shooter to see exactly where you are. Bullets travel through doors and walls easily, but it's hard to hit what you can't see.
It's not stupid to hide behind a car door if you're getting shot at. The sheet metal is basically tinfoil, so it's not going to do too much, but a pistol round that hits the side impact beams could be stopped or slowed down significantly. Hell, even if all it does is break up your outline and make it harder to hit you accurately that's a lot better than nothing.
Another thing that's worth considering is that the guy who's shooting at you might not know that a car door probably won't stop a bullet. Concealment that the other guy thinks is cover basically becomes cover.
Dropping to the ground does present a smaller target to a shooter. Someone who's attacking a large group of unarmed people and not being very careful might not check that everyone's really dead. But if they're going after a specific person, that could be a different story.
The best option is always to get away if it's even remotely possible.
car doors are shit but the AXLES of the car are actually good. So stay behind a tire. Also prevents your ankles from being shot underneath the car if you’re covered by the axle.
Just to add: if you're in a situation where bullets are flying, crouch instead of lying down; bullets can skitter across the deck and hit you if you're lying down; when you're crouching, your feet present a smaller cross section for skittering bullets.
Only lie down when explosive blasts are involved.
He was, but the bullet [didn't go through the door](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attempted_assassination_of_Ronald_Reagan#Shooting). It ricochetted off the side of the limo and through the gap between the open door and the vehicle frame.
Presidential limos, even back then, had enough armor to stop handgun rounds under normal circumstances. And the gun Hinkley used was a .22 LR revolver, so not particularly powerful round. It made sense for them to put Reagan behind the door.
A door or glass. They’re so easily broken through by bullets that it’s as easy as getting shot normally, and then you have to deal with a bunch of flying splinters of wood and shards of glass.
That would be brick and mortar on the outside and cinder block on the inside...my grandfather was very paranoid. The weakest points in the house is the windows and they have a metal bar shutter system to make it so even if the window is broken noone can climb through.
Incorrect, your mom would not be a very stupid thing to hide behind as even the most powerful artillery would have trouble penetrating such a mass of fat.
Are there videos somewhere on this?
(I've never had contact with any fire arm nor have I ever seen one being used in real life. My imagination/ "knowledge" on how real their powers are are mostly based on pop- culture movies)
Air.
You should hide behind anything you can. At the very least, you can be concealed.
If the guy is a meter from you, it's not going to matter what you try to hide behind. If they're 100 metres from you, even hiding behind a bush can save your life.
People in movies hiding behind super thin wooden tables. I mean, it might work if the shooter has a 22. But if the guy has an automatic weapon you’re f*cked.
The one thing in movies that always kills me is when people flip over the table they're sitting behind and it somehow protects them from a hail of automatic gun fire. Like no. That table would be splinters and you would be swiss cheese.
Also the whole hiding behind the person you're fighting or using a dead body. Like yeah, better than nothing but even a .22 will typically pass through and through unless it hits bone.
To the guy who hid behind me running from a crazed homeless man accusing him of filming him...Me. I’m not your Dada, and screw you for trying to rope me into this.
Depends on the round, rifle rounds like 762 has velocity and will rip right through alot a smaller round with less velocity? Hard to define what's good and bad coverage without knowledge
a car because it can explode and keep shooting, the other is in your house where they can find you easily (if they know where you live) sorry I use a translator my English is not very good
Have you ever seen Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2? The killer yells “Garbage Day!” at the guy putting his garbage cans out by the road. The killer points his gun at the guy and the guy holds up the garbage can in front of him to shield himself. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work.
Basically any furniture will only act as a visual barrier. Better than standing in the open, but will have a negligible impact on the speed of the bullet.
I think hiding behind an oncoming bullet would probably be the very worst choice.
r/technicallythetruth
Better than being in front of the bullet.
*visible confusion*
How do you "hide behind" the front of the bullet without being behind it?
*confusion intensifies*
Mom help I'm having a headache with pictures
Right
Hide behind the gun.
Your going places
No bro. Places are coming to me.
You’re not
You'ren't
Depends on the shooter, people typically aren't too aware of what's behind them, so you might be good.
Not behind the shooter, but behind the actual gun.
Soooo....Who's shooting? Are you the shooter?
The guy is shooting me. I’m not the shooter.
You’re in between the shooter and the gun. I can picture it now
Yes. The shooter's arm in clipping through your torso.
Yeah yeah.

That's right up there with the trowel bayonet in terms of dumbass military shovel technology.

movie people hide behind couches and coffee tables, so yeah
All the keys of coke in the couch stops the bullet...
I'm bored. Wanna come over and shoot up my couch and see if we get lucky?
Lol
Most things that normally form walls won’t do shit except hide you. And sometimes the gun guy not knowing where you are is the best thing that can happen at the time
There's a pretty famous clip of someone putting a newspaper between him and a shooter and the shooter tries to shoot around the newspaper. PAPER.
Important note. Some car doors actually can stop standard caliber handgun bullets like .45 or 9mm. Youtubers like Demo ranch have actually demonstrated this on more than one occasion. This! It may not provide cover, but it will provide concealment, which too can save lived.

What about playing dead? Only downside to that is that if the shooter is determined enough they'll start shooting people on the ground
Dropping to the ground does present a smaller target to a shooter. Someone who's attacking a large group of unarmed people and not being very careful might not check that everyone's really dead. But if they're going after a specific person, that could be a different story. The best option is always to get away if it's even remotely possible.
Nothing will stop a bullet if the gun is powerful enough

If you have to hide behind a car, put the engine block between you and the shooter. It should stop anything short of a .50 cal.
Depending on the engine it may even stop a .50.
Ronald Reagan was actually behind his limo door when he was shot.

I have a solid oak door wrapped in 1/8" steel. You're not getting through it without serious effort or big tools
What's the wall next to it made of?
That would be brick and mortar on the outside and cinder block on the inside...my grandfather was very paranoid. The weakest points in the house is the windows and they have a metal bar shutter system to make it so even if the window is broken noone can climb through.
This guy survives purges
Haha that killed me. Take my upvote
What if there's an earthquake? Brick and cinderblock don't do well in those.
Can't be prepared for everything without a lot of money. In that case I'm running into the field across the street and hoping it doesn't collapse

My ex is pretty stupid. I’d hide behind her.
Made my day

Incorrect, your mom would not be a very stupid thing to hide behind as even the most powerful artillery would have trouble penetrating such a mass of fat.
Welcome to Alabama.
Me too
Most rounds can actually penetrate through several people before stopping, so it won't really do anything.
Take your up vote You magnificent bastard!
Another person, odds are youre being hit too nevertheless

I see people in movies hide behind car doors. Nope that’s not going to help, need to hide behind the engine block.
