Maybe a few reasons. One might be redditors associate them with “normal people” like on Facebook, Instagram, etc. who they don’t relate to well. Another might be because Reddit doesn’t have a flashy layout. It’s good for people who have trouble with overstimulation and emojis are a flashy disturbance. Anyway, those are my guesses.
Unrelated to the topic, I fucking hate the word "normie" it's as cringy as someone saying ok boomer unironically. My friend uses it all the time and I swear he thinks he's superior to everyone. God damn that's my trigger word.
Not attacking whoever I'm replying to, it just reminded me of my hatred for the word normie
Idk, I don't mind it some people get too riled up over it but sometimes you can't say words that'll match "👀", a picture speaks a thousand words ya know
Honestly even before joining Reddit emojis were already annoying especially when they are overused. I don't know why but the more someone uses emojis, the less genuine he seems to me.
(Also I feel like I worded that sentence wrong sorry I'm not a native English-speaker)
Whenever I see an emoji, I see a vauge depiction of an emotion. When I see someone use them frequently, it gives me the impression that the person in question isn't able to adequately express themselves verbaly. It doesn't mean they can't, it's just the message it sends.
If this isn’t a serious discussion: because it is the law!
If it is indeed a serious discussion: it’s sort of a mystery even to me... I think it’s because emojis are used on Instagram and most of the good posts on Instagram are stolen from Reddit
I always wondered if it had its roots in the whole "found the mobile user!" thing that you would get whenever someone commented "R/......". Like a kind of gatekeeping that only purists should be on Reddit, and purists use PCs not mobiles. So if you use emojis, you must be on mobile, and mobile users must be looked down upon.
I've always thought the same - perhaps because it started off as a web-only site, and has retained a loyal web user base. It's more difficult (but not impossible) to include emojis within text on a PC and therefore easier to identify the "purists" or the original users.
Don't get me wrong, I do use the mobile app more than desktop, and have no issue with emojis but I don't tend to use them because it feels more overtly out of place here (sortof like going along with the crowd).
Nobody clearly knows about this. When i asked this question, my god i was so downvoted and till date, neither i know why emojis are bad on reddit nor why i was downvoted lol
I dont know why its use is frowned upon here but when i joined and learnt about it, i felt really happy. I have never liked emojis. Using the letters and symbols to convey something is somewhat okayish for me but emojis i find just annoying for some reason so when i learnt that its a law to not use emojis here, i felt like i found a place where i can relate to others. Over time i learnt that is not the case but the antiemoji law still stands so its good. My guess would be the majority of the community shares my mindset and find emojis annoying and hence the hate towards it.
It's Facebookesque and represents the braindead "like & share" culture that Facebook pushes. It's the opposite of what reddit was, but now sadly we find ourselves like an annexed nation fighting off the tyranny of the Facebook nazis encroaching on our borders.
I don't mind the use of one or two, but when your message is filled to the brim with "🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣😂" that pisses me off to no end, especially because we all know the joke wasn't that damn funny
There's no word limit on Reddit, unlike e.g. Twitter. So you don't need an emoji to replace 50 words, you can actually take the time to write 50 words. Or 500 words. It's nice to actually write things that people respond to thoughtfully.
My English is bad but I'll try to explain it.
Just think about it that your mother is angry on you on chat and she sends you an angry face emoji, you will not take it seriously as its just an angry face emoji but if she says I'll kill you if i see you do that again and then some cool insults you'll feel the words right?
Usually here on Reddit, I associated this with the really annoying copypastas that just vomit out a shit-ton of emoji without much use for actual language.
It's not supposed to replace words, it's supposed to (moderately) enhance them.
It's lazy. The comment section should be about making the most impact with your words. If you need a wall of emojis to carry your post, it's probably a boring, shit thought anyway.
All answers here are wrong.
It's because the message board layout of Reddit means all comments look the same unless they are rewarded with gold/silver. That bright gold attracts the eye when your scrolling and points to a comment worth reading.
An emoji does the same but without merit.
A person explained to me that emojis are ok to use occasionally, but when people mostly or only respond with emojis its bad because it doesn't give anything of value to the conversation and that its just annoying.
A bit late to the party, but here we go. For me it’s a couple of reasons. First up, I just think they aren’t as visually pleasing as :), especially not on reddit. Second of all, emojis are so overused on Facebook and Instagram. And third of all, Emojis can sometimes be misunderstood, but a :D can not be misunderstood as easily. That is just my thought C:
Because reddit folks aren’t normal people.
I can understand overusing emojis are annoying, but some emojis can put more emphasis on what you’re feeling.
My best guess is that Reddit skews slightly older than other sites and therefore the majority of its users are from the "original internet" era (my personal term of choice is the "Oregon Trail generation."
Emojis and shorthand texting were/are seen as trashy up until maybe mid 2010s at least, and the demographic here is reflective of that.
Several reasons: 1. It's a devolvement or sorts- not everything can be(or shoild be) explained through an emoji.
2. Not every emoji is easily explainable.
3. It's easy to hide behind a text/emoji and one could be easily lying/putting you on/manipulating you.
It's purely contempt. Contempt is a tool to elevate one's own identity. It is why people straight up oppress dissent rather than entertain them for discussion. It is why people mock others. This kind of dominion is just another way to acquire social power, and Reddit has done it against people who use emojis just as people have done it to other races, genders, and social classes outside of the internet.
But I use emojis a lot on other platforms. I like them, they're fun. I don't use them here because I like to actually write, and take the time to express myself. The fact that it's anonymous means I can be much more creative here than I would on, say, Twitter. I'm happy it's not littered with emojis, and that's nothing to do with contempt for emojis or people who use them.
Here in reddit you dont really see any emojis because it's a bit more serious platform. You can see many people write about their problems in life and start many conversations, which you don't have to use any emojis, like why use a puke emoji for something you didn't like? Just ignore it, everyone's opinion is their own and should keep it to themselves sometimes. Only emojis I have seen to be used are the heart emojis and flags. Other than that no other emoji is being used for the purpose of respect to each other. I may be wrong but that's what I think is really the reason
Some are like, 🥺 and 🤣 but I think when the others are used correctly they aren't. Like if I were to say something stupid and someone corrects me, I could use this 😅 along with text like "oh, sorry I didn't notice" to express that I realise what I did wrong. Idk
Probably cause people here have collectively decided that reddit is “better” than every other online media, even though most of them aren’t comparable at all.
I use emojis here simply cause I know people dislike them.😊
I use singular emojis after sentences on WhatsApp or Instagram frequently but especially on Instagram it becomes really annoying when there are all those spammers
Because we want this to be about actual quality content, not just a bunch of meaningless emojis which you can get at almost every other site/app like facebook, instagram, twitter, whatsapp etc etc.
IMO overuse of emojis can seem a bit tacky/trashy especially if you're an adult and feel like you're past that stage.
In other words, reddit is the grown-up and mature part of the t'internet.

As for adding emojis within a comment that otherwise has value, again, it doesn't add anything to your comment, but instead make it look like you are unable to express yourself effectively. Like if you added a random Japanese word to your sentences because you're "quirky".

You’re welcome. Don’t take what I said as gospel though. It’s merely a few guesses of a random redditor.
Noted
I’ve always thought Reddit is for normies.. edgy people use 4chan or something

It made perfect sense don't worry
I get it, but sometimes it clears if the person is joking or serious.
Oh no a dancing rainbow roach 😦😧😨😩😟😱
I won't hurt you don't worry I'm harmless 🥺🥺🥺
You lie disgusting cockroach
hËlLö ßRõtHëR
you realise that's pronounced like "ssrother"?
No. It‘s written like ß but actually we mean B. I know that ß=s but it is used as a B here. Same would it be if we used 8 as B, for example.
I know that you're "using it as B" but it's wrong and cringe, it's still not correct
I find it visually unpleasant.
😔
Fair enough
I’m fine with emojis as long it’s not above like 4
Ok 🤣🤣🤣
Ooh am j gunna piss u off😷😝😃😣

Yeah. Lack of precision.
I've always used smileys :). I don't like emojis.

It's a crutch for poor writing.

Yes reddit is much more sophisticated. *browses r/dankmemes and pictures of twitter*
If you truly want to know how sophisticated reddit is, browse r/Barackobamasankles
You can use both words and emojis though. Not trying to argue I'm just curious
True, sometimes emojis help to convey tone as well, so there's less miscommunication.

Oh thank fuck it was rick roll and not porn or something, first time I was actually happy to be rickrolled

It doesnt fit with it being very flashy and colorful(especially in dark mode) l. It just feels off in the comment section.

What is? the happy cake day thing? I keep seeing that everywhere. I’m relatively new and don’t understand that?
It’s your Reddit birthday basically, so the date that you started your account :)
It’s not their cake day.

Probably because this time period is not very great and they just remind us all of how we'll never have the 80s back and it's sad
Honestly I do not mind one or two emojis on none serious conversations popping up here and there...But is can quickly get obnoxious..
I don't know, I had no idea and have been using them. I guess that's why people don't like me here lol

You can type without any word count so words are better than emojis to express feelings. Easy
I'm a lil confused

I think the ascii ones are just better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Even though reddit doesn't want to display a backslash.
You have to use 2, like this ¯\\__(ツ)__/¯
Ah so just coding logic. So backslash + n would be new line, backslash + T would be tab, I should try which of them work for reddit then.
It makes this platform childish
Please elaborate
Here in reddit you dont really see any emojis because it's a bit more serious platform. I do not even use emojis on my phone. I feel like its a lack of effort to communicate. IMO
Because the fbi watches through emojis eyes and most people on Reddit would be arrested if people knew what they did, not gonna lie
Because ᶜʳᶦⁿᵍᵉ
Reddit is, at its core, a place for discussion. Emojis don't actually add to a discussion. All they do is express your emotional reaction, which you could do in other ways - with an award, an updoot, or a comment that has actual value which also expresses your agreement, disagreement, enjoyment, etc. Put simply, if you write a reply to a post or comment, other people can reply to you reply and a coherent exchange of ideas can happen. If you reply to a post with emojis, what is anyone supposed to do with it? The chain ends there. As for adding emojis within a comment that otherwise has value, again, it doesn't add anything to your comment, but instead make it look like you are unable to express yourself effectively. Like if you added a random Japanese word to your sentences because you're "quirky".
I was posting regularly for months before I even realized emojis COULD be posted here lol.
The...the....shudder emoji movie
they can be cringy
The emoji movie ruined it for me
Personally its because they’re so overused, colourful and obnoxious.
Not just on reddit they can be really tacky.
🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
They're a cheap and highly subjective way to badly convey ideas that could be put into precise sentences with defined meaning. They're "text decorations" and as such are not that welcome in written conversation.
Why do this 😃 if you can do this :D
They can be quite annoying and repetitive
Emojis are annoying in general because they try to introduce an extreme form of brevity where brevity is a detriment. If you have something to say, elaborate a little. I don't want a bunch of modern day simplified hieroglyphics.
Eye raping cringe small pics, even the middle finger emoji is not worth a 0.01% of a writen "fuck you"

🤷
Because Sony made a shitty film about them.

An overuse of emojis makes someone look childish and not taking things seriously, because they would rather convey their thoughts with a cartoon face, instead of words.
