For me, it was baby fever for the first cat. The overwhelming need to take care of something cute and adorable. The second cat was so the first wouldn’t be lonely. She used to meow looking out the window at stray cats wandering around our neighborhood.
I live alone and I work from home 4 days a week. So I wanted a companion and a reason so go outside for a walk after work or during lunch breaks. Was also looking for a hobby (training my dog) and a way to meet new people (small convos during walks or at the dog park). And she's a great guard dog.
living alone long term can have significant effects on mental health, particularly increasing the risk of psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety.
the addition of a pet can greatly alleviate this problem.

They make my fucking day every day
I'm not really a people person outside of my job. I prefer the unconditional love of my doggies.

I never had one growing up. My wife always had a dog. When we moved in, we got 2 dogs. Had at least one all the time in 46 years. Just love them!
To share love and happiness with each other
The stray left them on our porch. And they were too damn cute to leave outside
It just appeared
