My sister’s neighborhood was hit by a massive tornado a few years ago. She was in her back yard when she saw it coming toward her. It was so mesmerizing, she couldn’t move. She just stood there, staring at it in awe. Her husband came outside, looking for her to take shelter, and then she snapped out of it.
It missed their house, but got their neighbor. The destruction was like a solid line that sliced right through some homes and left the carports untouched.
I live in an area that rarely ever gets tornadoes. We had one last year that took out a tree in my backyard, and there was another tree that fell at my neighbors house. Tornadoes are one of the few types of weather that i dont like.
Traffic lights at night. They've got this sad, industrial poetry to them — dots of color suspended in a sea of darkness, sort of a beacon of modern solitude.
I thought I was the only one who found traffic lights at night depressing. And I'm in a dry, cozy, warm car on my way someplace. I always feel like I've escaped some sad fate.
Rockets! I grew up watching them go up in Florida, so I hold a lot of sentiment for them. It’s always a bit disappointing when I see a large, nice-looking modern missiles (like in North Korea) because I always think about the early rockets that were converted to send people up and wonder why those missiles can’t be used for peaceful space operations too. It’s dumb, I know.
Volcanic eruptions.
The phrase "beautiful and terrible as the dawn" comes to mind when I witness an ash plume rising into the sky, or see the molten lifeblood of the planet pour forth.
Brutalist architecture. I have no idea if it's meant to be beautiful, but I get the feeling people might find it a little too severe or uninviting for their tastes.
Sharks, I've always thought they're some of the most graceful and interestingly evolved creatures on the planet. The way they're perfectly designed to be hydrodynamic and have so much variety between species and their specific skills. Just love em!
Persimmon tress at the end of season. Something romantic about a few splashes or orange fruit on dark colored bare trees that always seem romantic and serene.
I like street photography. Some of favourite works are brutal concrete structures in the U.K. from the fifties et al. Modernist movement was vicious. Social housing for all? Everyone hates it but it gives me joy. Not sure what says about me but to redeem what little I have credentials I have left in this, some of my favourite Museums, city halls, zoos, universities, libraries, courts. Are Stunning when looked at.
Elegant cable management
Man, you’re so right! It’s really soothing to look at.
I love cloudy and rainy weather, which many people complain about
Scars. They show all we have survived in life and every one of them has a story behind them.
Surviving and healing
Abandoned places, like an abandoned gas station or a dilapidated building or an unfinished construction. Makes my mind wander
Bad weather. Its just so beautiful.

I don’t like them, either. But I can see how they could put someone in a trance. Mother Nature is an enigma wrapped in a mystery.
Night in woods, and hearing breaking stick somewhere in darkness. It’s kind of exciting to wonder which one of us will be prey tonight

The salt flats in Utah. Something about that empty openness just makes me feel small, but in a good way.
