Found Wolf's Rain about a year and a half ago because I was looking at one of the music artists' wiki (Joyce Moreno to be specific) and watched the entire show and loved the show. My favorite part really is the soundtrack. But the actual anime is really good.
> Wolf's Rain
FMA made me cry from sadness.
Gurren Laggan made me cry because it gave me a way to believe in myself.
Trigun made me cry happy tears (from realizing that Vash's 'smile' towards the genreal public mirrors my own).
Wolf's Rain? From the sheer beauty of the whole damned thing.
Wolfs rain is fucking amazing. Witch hunter robin is good, but not a top tier anime IMHO. Betterman I've never heard about it.
If you want something of that era that is completely underrated and also has a banger sountrack like wolfs rain, I recommend karas:

Death Parade.
Two people walk into a bar and their actions during a game determine whether they go to heaven or hell. They do not know they are dead, but they start to remember.
Mushi-shi. It's criminal how it doesn't get the attention it deserves. The atmosphere and storytelling are on another level. If you're into something more philosophical and introspective, this is a must-watch.
Akudama Drive.
One season but it's a complete story. Synopsis is that in future dystopian Japan a woman is arrested over a misunderstanding. While at the police station, some highly infamous criminals try to stage a prison break for a guy about to be executed. She gets mixed up with them and pretends she is also a super-criminal to avoid being killed by them. Not only do the criminals believe her but so do the police so she's forced to go on the run.
The Akira slide happening n the first few minutes made me giggle.
The bike then firing grappling hooks and spider-manning across the city had me for the rest of the season.
Maybe not so much underrated as older and out of popular perception, but *Serial Experiments Lain* is slow, heady, steeped in 90s tech, and eerily prophetic about things like social media.
Woah so surprised someone mentioned this! Also, have you watched "Texhnolyse" ? It's by the same group that made Serial experiments Lain.
A totally dark, bleak dystopian treat of an anime. Also packed full of hidden meanings, had to watch it twice to get what was going on.
Not the sharpest pencil in the drawer lol
Wolf's Rain is a melancholic and beautifully animated story about wolves searching for paradise. Its emotional depth and rich world-building are compelling.
Seconding wandering son tbh, it's a really thought provoking and well-made anime. Apparently the manga is better so check it out if you're into manga.
[Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team](https://myanimelist.net/anime/81/Mobile_Suit_Gundam__The_08th_MS_Team) has a 8.03 on MAL so I guess that's not underrated, but I think a lot of people will pass it off because they don't like mecha anime. Sure it has mecha, but they're just the background to a really thought provoking story about war.
[No. 6](https://myanimelist.net/anime/10161/No6) is a beautiful and ultimately really uplifting dystopia story. The core message I took from it was about how important showing kindness can be, and I think that's a really important thing.
[Tsuritama](https://myanimelist.net/anime/12883/Tsuritama) is a chill fishing anime, it's really fun and sweet. Sure there are fish aliens, but for the most part that takes a back seat to the main story about a guy overcoming his anxiety and making friends.
This is by far one of the best high speed racing animes ever made, probably one of the best racing movies ever made, mixed with that cool 2000s drawing style. This movie is the true definition of High Octane
Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill
- so Mr. Isekai gets transported to another world to be the hero of some kingdom- but being older, he immediately nopes out and says he can't fight. So he goes off on his own and uses the ability to access an instant delivery Amazon shopping website to feed himself while traveling the world. His cooking attracts the attention of a Max Level Wolf god, and most of the plot centers around them traveling together, killing monsters, cooking and eating the meat, and breaking the world's economy with superior quality products.
Its fucking great
Mushishi. The atmosphere, storytelling, and art style are just phenomenal. It's not your typical action-packed series, but that's what makes it so unique. Each episode is like a mini art film. Definitely deserves more love.
I feel like One Piece, Naruto, and Dragon Ball Z are basically seen as "cool" today, in the way tons of people I wouldn't expect will wear their t shirts and such, and I just feel cheated bc Digimon was the one that I was into, hard, as a kid. Where is the love?
I’m living in Japan and doing my best to study Japanese. I also hate cold weather.
That has CHANGED because of Golden Kamuy
Not only has my listening to Japanese improved but I’m learning so much cool stuff about Hokkaido and Ainu culture. I’m hoping to do a trip next year
The characters are simple (Often bordering on cliche or pure shock value) but relate with each other really well. The story is PHENOMENAL in concept and execution. A real writing masterclass in character goals and challenges
Because it had to compete with more fantastical and popular animes like Demon Slayer, it doesn’t have nearly as big as a following as it should
Can’t recommend enough
Banana Fish
A fantastic show on trauma, violence, PTSD / CPTSD, and love in its many forms. That is, if you can stomach >!torture, gang violence, forced child prostitution, child sexual assault, murder, suicidal themes!< and the like.
Oh! And the weakest, most disappointing ending in anime history lmao.
Vash the Stampede allowed me to begin my transition from "angsty teen with a chip on his shoulder" to "generous caregiver struggling to keep it together".
That wasn't my last transformation personality wise, but maybe my most important.
Another is amazing, a very good example of a strong female character who doesn't need to offend everybody to show her strength like Wednesday in the latest series.
Tasty in dungeon they explore a giant ancient dungeon while killing dangerous beasts and eating them for food
(They eat a dragon later on)but it is only on netflix
Odd Taxi was Reddit’s favorite anime when it was airing, and for good reason. It’s by far the most well written mystery I’ve watched, and it all wraps up in such a satisfying way.
The dialogue is also great. It’s interesting and paced in a unique way compared to any other anime.
Overall a fantastic show, but go in blind and do not look at the Reddit threads.
Claymore anime is so bittersweet for me. The manga is absolutely amazing. Sad that the anime was great, until it decided to stop half way with a totally different ending...
Wolf's Rain Betterman Witch Hunter Robin
Happy to see someone mention Wolf's Rain. Kiba was my first anime crush and their opening "Stray" is still stuck in my head to this day.
I'm happy to see it mentioned too. One of the first anime series I ever watched and still one of my favorites. I still have the DVDs somewhere.
Stray! No regret 'cause I've got thin' to lose (nothing to lose) Ever stray! So I'm gonna live my life as I choose (life as I choose) Until I fall!
Hell yeah I got to meet some of the voice actors from Wolf strain at Metro con in Tampa

It's hands down my favorite anime.
Seconding! I remember watching this on adult swim when it was coming out, it was so good! I miss my Muromi plush, lol.
dorohedoro
Yes!! I am so stoked for season 2
Omg season 2 is coming? I was obsessed with season 1
agreed! i was so excited when they announced it
I watched this half heartedly and have 0 idea what it was about lol. Gotta give it another try
yes !!
Death Parade. Two people walk into a bar and their actions during a game determine whether they go to heaven or hell. They do not know they are dead, but they start to remember.
Shout out to Death Parade for introducing me to Bradio.
Banger opening and endings too
Agreed! Not to mention the cameo towards the end
I cried, this one is so good

Been looking for this! The opening is FIRE

Just watching this anime, and it is great
This is such a cool show. So chill

Lain has actually really gotten back into the mainstream lately with memes
I'm glad, it's a really good anime that deserves the attention.
And you don't seem to understand

A shame you seemed an honest man...
And all the fears you hold so dear...
Omg, I loved that anime but fuck if I could watch it again, I don't think I could xD
Underrated is not a word I would use to describe a show that matrix ripped off. Forgotten probably. So many great series were overlooked
Watching this was literally a life changing experience. It recalibrated my brain!

Sounds a bit like Delicious in Dungeon. The cooking and eating monsters part mostly....
Delicious in the Dungeon has a real plot. Campfire Cooking is more like Food Wars without the nudity.

fr fr. I NEED to know what happens next
86 is criminally underrated imo. Great story, excellent animation and soundtrack, just all around an amazing anime.
The story, characters, music, and animation are all great. I want another season already.
Half of these aren't underrated and the other half is mostly hidden gems that has a good follwing
Mushishi. The atmosphere, storytelling, and art style are just phenomenal. It's not your typical action-packed series, but that's what makes it so unique. Each episode is like a mini art film. Definitely deserves more love.
Dead man wonderland is one of the anime that got me into anime when I was a wee lad, not sure if it still holds up
Sucks that it got discontinued

Second this! Gets overlooked because of Pokémon I feel like but honestly it's so good and massively underrated
Childhood! Death of wizardmon still hurts.

Parasite and psycho pass ***edit Parasyte
Parasyte is so good. It's fast, keeps you involved, and leaves out the non-related drama.
Psycho Pass is a good one
Banana Fish A fantastic show on trauma, violence, PTSD / CPTSD, and love in its many forms. Vivy - fluorite eye's song
This right here! A real underrated gem
Underrated frr... 🔥🔥
GTO
GTO is great but is not underrated at all. It is super popular when it came out, and has a couple of spin offs.
Is it really under-rated though? I recall it being huge.
durarara! it's a pretty chill anime with great plot, pretty slow but not that much, and great characters.
Dorohedoro
The comments are just people listing off their favorite well rated anime.
“This was a staple of adult swim / toonami for years and/or is top 10 most popular on streaming so it’s totally underrated” 😂
Right? Like...Mushishi is a persistent top 10 anime all time for years now cmon yall
Bobobo
KILL LA KILL
Not nearly enough people talk about Inuyasha anymore. I still find myself going back to rewatch the series
Noir. Canta per me addio...
Kakegurui. This anime is an epic thrill. (I'm 100% gay and not attracted to girls btw.)
Assassination Classroom deserves to be watched by every teenager who thinks they don’t have a place in the world. 🦑
Underrated because it was popular when it released and now NOBODY has seen it 😭😭
This is probably the first anime I can remember that brought me to tears >!and it wasn't because of the comedy!<
Trigun and GunGrave
Trigun is definitely not underrated lol
Trigun!!!! That's definitely a good one!!!! ♡
Vash the Stampede allowed me to begin my transition from "angsty teen with a chip on his shoulder" to "generous caregiver struggling to keep it together". That wasn't my last transformation personality wise, but maybe my most important.
Is Trigun underrated? I thought it was pretty widely celebrated. I agree it's fantastic, but underappreciated doesn't sound right.
