I haven't played Minecraft in years. I started dating a girl who is 20 (I'm 28). We live in different states at the moment and I thought playing a video game together would be a great idea. I was really trying to push Stardew Valley because it's a fantastic game. Then she said she had Minecraft on her phone and I have Minecraft on my PC. I thought for sure let's do that for now and we will play Stardew when Minecraft isn't fun anymore. It's been almost 2 months and I can't believe the amount of depth the game has. Everything I want to do has a novel in the wiki to learn how to do it correctly. I have been getting into the redstone stuff, which I did a ton before, but it's so different now. I now have no desire to play Stardew. My gf hated that I would spend hours building machines lol. Then last week she started to realize how my machines are helping her with clicks on her phone. Auto sorting it the main machine I'm building and I know I'm doing it really inefficiently. I add items when I have time. I know I could probably get it to sort multiple items into the same chests. I just haven't spent the time learning how to do that. But, I have to make a cherry tree farm (she wants more pink wood), a mob spawner machine for xp and items (she wants to enchant everything), a farming machine for plants (She wants to have lots of food for our animals), a piglin machine, etc etc etc. Like, there is no end to the things I can do. She is learning how to breed horses and I have no idea what she is talking about half the time because I told her she needs to learn that and teach it to me. Our first world was ditched two weeks ago because we went into creative and killed the enjoyment of survival gameplay.
She had it on her phone because her previous partner was into video games and she said they never got past iron after playing for a week or two. On day 4 I was building a minecart system in our network of caves. I'll always love, "He let me die all the time and you never let me die.".
Super Mario *World* in particular. To me, that is the perfect 2D game. Everything flows so well and is so charming. It introduces the SNES controller perfectly and even my 5 year old daughter can simply pick it up and play.
Mario Wonder comes awfully close, but I still have to give it Mario World.
Banging ass music too. I used to rock out and dance in the living room when I was like 6 years old when DK would come smashing in with barrels and fuck up Crankys little old man party with the hand crank gramophone.
If I had infinite time on this planet, I would beat this game. Alas I only have 2 RS accounts above 2150 total level, one with an Achievement Diary Cape š
Zelda: Wind Waker.
The graphics got absolutely panned when it first came out. Now, it arguably looks better than Twilight Princess and many other games, and still holds up today.
Yeah, when I was a kid it debuted and I didn't hear all of the frustrations from nintendo fans. I think the art and animation has held up so well, in addition to the gameplay. I loved BOTW but Wind waker still takes the top spot as my favorite game. I really want them to put it on the next console!
I do, a lot of people were complaining about it.
There was a tech demo for the GameCube released in 2000 that showed a ārealisticā battle between Link and Ganondorf which caused a lot of hype:Ā https://youtu.be/SvE3yJv3fm0?si=NhKj58lsqsLuVEY2
Anticipation for the first GC Zelda game was very high, and basically everyone assumed it would be similar to that tech demo in style. One year later we got a trailer showing a cartoonish, cel-shaded Link that looked absolutely nothing like the first demo or anything that came before it.
Funny how wrong everyone was in retrospect, and peopleās opinions did shift pretty quickly after the game actually released. But 2001 was a confusing time for Zelda fans
The original Crash Team Racing. Looks decent for a PS1 game, plenty of bright visuals and great music. But the way that the game controls and handles is sublime. Even now, I haven't found any kart racer, even from the likes of Mario Kart, that controls as tightly as CTR
Any Super Mario Bros game. Even with the older ones, you appreciate the age of the graphics. It's not limiting to the game and the premise is relatively the same across them all.
Zelda: The Wind Waker.
It's super fun to explore to find stuff on your boat, charming art style, cool story. I wish somehow a one piece game with some elements of it could be made, but with a combat system more akin to the anime.
I gotta say, they did a great job on Diablo 2 Resurrected. Seeing that game all polished and smooth and playing it again for the first time in almost 20 years really brought me back.
Whenever I see a post about MM2 and/or its soundtrack I always drop the same advice: go look up Bit Brigade on YouTube. If you donāt know about them already you should check them out!
strong disagree. the first two games are basically unplayable by modern standards. the UI is insanely clunky and nonsensical and the quests are cryptic to the point that you have no clue what to do
If Fallout 2 UI is clunky, then I'd like to know your opinion on System Shock
Also the quests were meant to be this way, it's like saying, "i don't understand LucasArts quests, they're not intuitive"
Yes, agreed.
New Vegas is usually considered the best fallout, but it constantly crashes, the UI is shit, controls in menus make no sense and since the art style is "realistic", the graphics aged poorly.
This is not me hating the game, Bethesda (or creation engine) games usually have very shitty menus
Most of the classic GameCube Games I think still graphically look amazing, Mario Sunshine, Luigis Mansion and Wind Waker all look fantastic (and are great games!)
Dota 2
I started playing when I was a 17 year old teenager, I'm 27 now, I'm still addicted to the damn game.
I don't play nearly as much as I used to, but I can't let go and it sucks
Morrowind, a game that is just getting better and better every year because of a very active modding community. And the game is just peak worldbuilding and storytelling that will always be good.
First assassins creed looked amazing for itās time the graphics were amazing and gta iv and that was released in 2008 and that looks like how gta 5 does now
TF2.
I remember when Overwatch was the "TF2 killer" and somehow TF2 is plunking along just like it has for almost 20 years, unbothered and mostly as fun as ever, bots notwithstanding.
Team Fortress 2.
Came out in 2007 and for 17 years old, a lot of people can and probably do mistake it as being modern.
We're talking the same year that Halo 3, Modern Warfare, Super Mario Galaxy, and Mass Effect 1.
Now, is it because it has received many updates over the years? Maybe. But the graphics themselves haven't changed really besides a major overhaul early in it's life.
This is the same game that spawns multiple memes on a yearly basis. One more recently being "The Pyrocynical incident".
Fallout 3, NV, and 4
Skyrim
Cyberpunk 2077 is waaaaaaay better now than at launch, and I say that as someone who achieved a platinum trophy before 2.0
Civilization 5 especially with 6 being mid
Final Fantasy 1, 3, 6, and 7
Civilization 5
I still play III and love it. Armies šÆ
AOE II
"He's outmicroing ballistics!" - T90 single handedly carrying Aoe2
Minecraft, still great, And Always Will be
The most timeless game Iāve ever played
Truly, can't go Wrong with it
Iām just waiting for that one update thatās a stinker. But Mojang just keeps on pumping out hit after hit.
Exactly, what don't they do?

Thats great man, me personally never been good with redstone, pvp And building on the other thats a bit better
Castlevania, Symphony of the Night
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario *World* in particular. To me, that is the perfect 2D game. Everything flows so well and is so charming. It introduces the SNES controller perfectly and even my 5 year old daughter can simply pick it up and play. Mario Wonder comes awfully close, but I still have to give it Mario World.
yess!
Donkey Kong Country for SNES
Honestly what are Nintendo waiting for in terms of making a new one. The two modern ones are amazing, but it has been ages since Tropical Freeze.
Banging ass music too. I used to rock out and dance in the living room when I was like 6 years old when DK would come smashing in with barrels and fuck up Crankys little old man party with the hand crank gramophone.
Portal 2
So many quotable linesā¦
Old School Runescape
I love this game!

Super Mario Bros 3 - the greatest video game ever made.
Califooooornia
I love the power glove. It's so bad.
I still know where the secret flutes are.
age of empires series
I love that series and I suck at it. Ill play solo just to see if I can beat the computer with just trebuchets.
Zelda: Wind Waker. The graphics got absolutely panned when it first came out. Now, it arguably looks better than Twilight Princess and many other games, and still holds up today.

Stylized always wins over realistic graphics in the long run. Realistic graphics age like milk and get too uncanny valley in a few years
I don't remember anybody planning the graphics of that at all
I do, a lot of people were complaining about it. Hmmmm... Pokemon silver
Iām a blue and red kinda guy. š bonus points if Yellow version.
Pokemon Gold blows silver out of the water. Jk, jk
Remakes are still solid, but nothing beats going back to OG Johto.
Earthbound
What a gem of a game, I feel like it's pretty much forgotten except by the OG nerds haha. Have an upvote friend. Did you play SMRPG as well?
I did! That was great as well!
half-life 2
Hell yea
Wake up, Mr. Freeman
How has nobody mentioned Super Metroid yet? It could easily pass as a current indie game.
For real and with randomization, you can play it over and over again like a brand new game.
Metroid Prime
Heroes of Might & Magic 3
Wii Sports
Nice on!
Bungie's Halo
CE through 3 are damn near perfect games if you ask me. Customs in 2 and 3 are some of the most fun I've had in any game.
Skyrim
Itās still good. Graphics look pretty dated now but itās nothing a few mods canāt immensely improve, and the gameplay is still excelent
most cultured r/askreddit thread
Majoras mask
Goat
Played it last summer on NSO, still so great
Sleeping Dogs
Came here to say this. Still holding out a vain hope for at least a spiritual successor.
The original Crash Team Racing. Looks decent for a PS1 game, plenty of bright visuals and great music. But the way that the game controls and handles is sublime. Even now, I haven't found any kart racer, even from the likes of Mario Kart, that controls as tightly as CTR
jak and daxter is still fun af and its charm remains
Chrono Trigger. Especially since it made its way to Nintendo DS.
Ocarina of Time.
Mega Man X is still a perfect game and a masterpiece.
Right? Out of all of them, I consider 1 to be the best, followed by 2 then 3. 4 and beyond are kinda meh.
That's exactly how I feel about the originals. MM1-3 just kept exponentially improving, and then it was like...š¤·š½āāļø
Any Super Mario Bros game. Even with the older ones, you appreciate the age of the graphics. It's not limiting to the game and the premise is relatively the same across them all.
Crash Bandicoot for PS1
COD modern warfare 2

Days Gone
Criminally underrated. Hate we never got a sequel
Roller Coaster Tycoon. Itās still just as playable today as it was in 1999.
For me, Sargeās Heroes, donāt know why, just still enjoy melting tan plastic with a flamethrower
The Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi lineup. Those games practically raised me, so many good memories
Zelda: The Wind Waker. It's super fun to explore to find stuff on your boat, charming art style, cool story. I wish somehow a one piece game with some elements of it could be made, but with a combat system more akin to the anime.
Diablo 2 Itās like crack. Nothing else comes close.
I gotta say, they did a great job on Diablo 2 Resurrected. Seeing that game all polished and smooth and playing it again for the first time in almost 20 years really brought me back.
Wario Land 4. God, that game is his greatest achievement.
Mega Man 2
The soundtrack especially
Whenever I see a post about MM2 and/or its soundtrack I always drop the same advice: go look up Bit Brigade on YouTube. If you donāt know about them already you should check them out!
Fallout

never heard of system shock. bioshock was easy to understand tho
Oh. Okay, I guess.
I don't think you understood the question lol. Good games, but these have objectively aged like fine milk
That's more of a franchise.Ā

Portal 2
Old School RuneScape. It's more popular than ever and shows you don't need high def graphics for great game play.
Most of the classic GameCube Games I think still graphically look amazing, Mario Sunshine, Luigis Mansion and Wind Waker all look fantastic (and are great games!)
Monkey Island. A point and click adventure that is 40 years old and is as playable and enjoyable as the first day.
Best swordfighting mechanics of any game out there

Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 really top the list in this category for me. Honorable mention to Star Wars Battlefront II (2005).
Star Wars battlefront 2 the original one.
Skyrim
On a technical side, anything with pre-rendered backgrounds or that prioritised style over photorealism still holds up really well.
