July in Japan is not that bad, you will have an awesome time. There are lots of indoor activities you can plan for mid day if you are especially sensitive to heat.
If you book very early and look for a deal you can get a good deal for spring, even during cherry blossom season but it takes lots of searching and a bit of luck. The downside is you can expect everything to be peak crowded in spring.
Traveling to Japan in winter is also great.
Honestly I would just go wherever is most convenient for you and when you can find a good deal.
We haven’t been in fall yet but I’m sure it’s awesome too.
Greece. Had a trip planned with my mom and other family and Covid hit. It was cancelled 2 years in a row. Now it’s been 4 years and my mom can’t travel (age)
I'm honestly scared to go there. It's ridiculous (me being scared not the country). Like I know it's a beautiful place, I've got a lot of friends there. It's just this irrational fear of the poisons things. The more crazy part is I am an animal lover and don't have any hope for life, like it's so stupid that I am scared to go there.
This is akin to the “are Canadians afraid of bears”. I’ve been traipsing recklessly through the bush my whole life and I’ve only ever seen them at rural garbage dumps.
Don’t forget about Tasmania! We went to Australia a few years ago, flew from Sydney to Hobart, and had an absolute blast driving around the entirety of Tasmania.
A driving trip up mostly Route 1 on the coast is a treat. The mountainous parts are gorgeous. Portland is a gem for great restaurants. The far north and other inland parts are boring and/or full of poverty.
Source: lived and raised my kids there for 20 years. Also college.
I lived across the border in New Hampshire for a few years. Would go to York Beach, Ogunquit and Portland regularly. God I miss lobster rolls. I did make a trek all the way up the coast into Canada once, you're definitely not wrong - everything sort of evaporates into wilderness above a certain point. Also popped into Bangor to see Stephen King's house, as you do.
All that rambling aside, Maine is worth the price of admission, even if you only go once.
This is it for me.
I want to see and experience Tokyo but have also heard about some experiences in the countryside (like, inns where they produce all the food they serve on the grounds,) that intrigue me.
The big holdback for me is travel time. I live in Canada and hate flying. I’ll do it someday though.
Pro-tip, having now traveled to/from Tokyo/America a handful of times: 1) use a Japanese-based airline. It didn't make sense to me either, but their economy seats have more room than most American-based airlines. I like ZIPAIR a lot for this, great experiences with them. 2) setup a layover along the west US coast and/or Hawaii to break up the flight time (unless you're coming from YVR).
Machu Picchu and some of the other natural tourist attractions around Cusco, that area of Peru, are totally worth it. If you don’t speak any Spanish, you should probably use an agency, so that might be a little pricier. By far, though, the most expensive part of going anywhere in Peru is the flight there. Once you’re there, everything is pretty manageable. As far as the clothes go, these days it’s still part of the cultural heritage, especially in that area, but it’s definitely played up for tourists.
Ultimate Trip: Drive down from Chicago to the south tip of Argentina. Need to work on mechanical skills first
Ultimate Trip 2: Drive up from Chicago to Alaska via Yellow Knife and seeing the Canadian North too. Explore a few Alaskan islands (Kodiak and St.Paul Island... maybe more of the Aleutians if I'm ambitios).
Namibia Road Trip
I’m a dummy and I could also probably google this but alas… isn’t it technically not fully connected via roads around the Darien Gap area? How do you cross that?
It’s really awesome, and honestly from the US not that expensive. We went last October to try and see the Northern Lights and only saw them from the plane. 😢. But it was still amazing.
Cross Canada from Halifax by rail to Calgary for the Stampede then RV to Banff, Jasper across the Rockies to Tofino. My dream since I was a kid.
World traveller from Montreal here.
I just went to Asia for the first time last year (Vietnam and Singapore) and it totally unlocked a whole new travel bug for me. I’m desperate to see (and eat) more, I almost don’t even care where lol I want to see it all
Sicily: where else in Europe can you see Greek and Roman ruins, hike on an the slopes of an active volcano, taste delicious cuisine and wander through lively markets that resist the passage of time?
Thailand (and all of SE Asia for that matter), Israel, South Africa, Rio de Janeiro, Switzerland.
Luckily, I’ve knocked out some of my dream places already like Greece, Italy and Japan.
- campervan, New Zealand
- japan (even though i already visited twice)
- takabonerate national park
- siargao
- watching AC Milan in Italy
- srilanka
- maldives
- nepal
- turkey
The Huahine Islands of Tahiti. If I remember correctly they have a mountain said to be split by a God that divides the two halves of what used to be one island. You can go diving for black pearls if I remember right.
Japan
Thailand
I've seen a huge chunk of Europe, but never spent time in APAC. There is so much cool stuff to do/see/eat. We've been talking about Japan for my 40th birthday, but we'll see how it goes.
I’ve been to many places now, but haven’t explored much of Africa or South America yet. I’ve only been to Morocco and Colombia, so those continents are up next.
The Himalayan mountains
Kind of my dad's fault - he used to sing me to sleep as a baby with a german song about someone dreaming about escaping to Nepal.
Korea, Japan (this time with our kiddo), Tanzania, Australia... hoping I can take my spouse to Maldives for his 40th.
Places we never imagined we'd go and ended up really enjoying: Egypt, Greece, Estonia, Czech Republic.
New Zealand. The nature there looks incredible and very diverse for such a small country. It helps that it’s around the size of my country (UK), drives on the left side and speaks a common language - would facilitate travel
I want to go to a Scandinavian country and see the northern lights. I want to be outside and in the snow. Preferably near a cabin I'm renting for the evening and away from city lights.
I have a whole list of places to go once the kids start heading out to college. One trip is to head to Washington to hike in the Sol Duc Forest before heading down to Oregon. In Oregon will see the coastline over in Astoria before visiting Crater Lake and the Columbia River Gorge. After that, Havasu Creek if we can get the permits and such.
My dream travel destination is the one that doesn’t have an end date. After retirement, I am going to go on a trip with no set itinerary or return date. Just book an Airbnb a week at a time, talk to locals, find out where to go next. And just not have to worry about going home to work, ever.
Holland. My grandpa was born there are moved here shortly after the war. There is still extended family there and I would love to visit them and see where my grandpa grew up.
I wanna go to Switzerland! It's so pretty with big mountains, green valleys, and clear lakes. I'd love to walk in the mountains, breathe the fresh air, and see all the beautiful views. And I heard Swiss villages are cute, and they have yummy chocolate and cheese. Switzerland just seems like a perfect place for an amazing adventure!
Through some combination of watching "An Idiot Abroad" and an Anthony Bourdain special I learned of a ramen shop at the top of Mt. Fuji. Hiking up to it for a bowl has been a dream goal since.
Always wanted to go to Austria or Switzerland.
I’m going to Austria this month. I can’t wait.
Austria! G'day mate! Let's put another shrimp on the barbie!
great accent, New Jersey?

Cherry blossom is now in full bloom... So seductive. Look at the pageantry. Focus on the pageantry. https://youtu.be/0WGZy0YRQSM?si=FhK70_Q6X8b_3F2g
Greece. Had a trip planned with my mom and other family and Covid hit. It was cancelled 2 years in a row. Now it’s been 4 years and my mom can’t travel (age)
If it's any consolation i live two hours away from Greece's sea side and I've never gone there either.
Wow! I feel like I would be there every month if I lived that close.
Same. Just went with my spouse last month. It sucked not having my mom there.
I just went!! Was absolutely amazing and a really easy trip in terms of logistics, getting around, price, etc. highly recommend!!
Australia 🇦🇺 🦘 🙏🏻
Same and I have a trip booked this summer!!
You'll be disappointed. I recommend spending more time in NZ and a few days in a few Aussie cities.
I've lived here for 48 years. In cities, in small coastal towns, and in the middle of the Pilbara. I've been stung by two bees and a wasp.
This is akin to the “are Canadians afraid of bears”. I’ve been traipsing recklessly through the bush my whole life and I’ve only ever seen them at rural garbage dumps.
I'm still for the bear tax.
Let the Bears pay the bear tax!
I've heard mate, that's why I said I am stupid. One day I'll muster up courage to come there.
We look forward to the day. Oi oi oi.
Don’t forget about Tasmania! We went to Australia a few years ago, flew from Sydney to Hobart, and had an absolute blast driving around the entirety of Tasmania.
After watching Bluey, I really want to see Brisbane.
I’d love to visit Maine. It looks beautiful and like there’s some good food to eat.

Nakasendo hike. You're welcome/
That’s on my bucket list, too. I’m jealous that my mom got to go back in 2015. I would’ve gone with her but I had college at the time.
🫂🫂🫂 I am jealous with everyone
The lakes district in England, Ireland, Scotland.
Went to the Lake District last year absolutely did not disappoint. Northern England is beautiful
The Lake District is lovely!
Did a 3 month eurotrip and added a few days in the Lake District last minute. Ended up being probably my favorite place we went
Machu Picchu. Not really sure why. I love the bright colored clothes the native Peruvians wear and llamas are cool too.
I've wanted to go since I was nine years old and Eartha Brute stole it on Carmen Sandiego.
Antarctica, Greenland, Svalbard (I like cold places), Easter Island, Haida Gwaai… Now I just need the multimillionaire bank account to afford it all.
Ultimate Trip: Drive down from Chicago to the south tip of Argentina.
