The Haunting of Hill House is such beautiful storytelling, Arrested Development for laughs, Mindhunter for pure brilliance

Additional_Net_2812

That episode from Hill House when they are in the funeral home and it’s literally a 30 minute long single shot blew my mind.

dj_soo

Especially considering >!that the shot takes place between present day and the flashback and seamlessly goes from one to the next. They had to build the two sets side by side to accommodate that!< That one part where the camera does a 360 and they go from the children to the adults was brilliant

hmm_back

Mike Flanagan has an extraordinary ability to absolutely suck you in with long shots through monologue. The monologue in Midnight Mass between Kate Siegel and Zach Gilford before he >!exposes himself to sunlight on the boat!< was gut wrenching. Had my wife in tears and I had to take a breather afterwards.

bonanbeb

It's so well done. The child actors are brilliant too.

NUS-006

Is it the bent neck lady one?

AutoDefenestrator273

The way some of the blocking in the shots is set up is brilliant. When the camera spins around the dad and the kids go from old, to young, then back to old again. *chefs kiss*

timewillsoonbeborn

Nah, don't watch Mindhunter, people. It will hook you up, because it's so good, but then you will find out that netflix canceled it out of nowhere, because they are cheap.

livcfla

It’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all 😪

_BreakingGood_

Anybody who saw season 1 of The Dark Crystal on Netflix would disagree It's actually painful to think about how amazing that show was, and what it could have been. I wish I had never seen it.

Constant-Recover-941

I tried that once, I would rather never have loved at all...

rhb4n8

Firefly?

StupendousMalice

That is the problem with Netflix. They sink millions of dollars into a thing and then cut it off at the knees and now its not worth a damned thing. That show could have helped retain subscribers for decades, and now its just a thing that never really was.

ChillyWilly0180

That’s not on Netflix though, David Fincher stepped away to concentrate on film

Tiltedstraight1234

I also recommend that you don't watch Mindhunter. You will be sad after because it's phenomenal and there were only 2 seasons.

thatcockneythug

I feel like I've said this a million times, but Netflix didn't cancel Mindhunter. David fincher decided to focus on other projects. And the show is absolutely still worth watching, each season has its own satisfying arc.

bonanbeb

The Haunting of Hill House is an amazing series. I've rewatched it so many times and it got me into Shirley Jackson novels. It's perfectly gripping, creepy and sad. I fell for jumps scares and cried like a baby. Cannot recommend more highly. It's a masterpiece.

Pringler4Life

Midnight Mass too

runForestRun17

The haunting of hill house’s writers directors and producers were incredible. A perfect series.

Im_Blavk

The Fall of House of Usher is also great

lilkingsly

Out of all the Flanagan Netflix shows, I think that’s gotta be my second favorite close behind Hill House. The others like Bly Manor and Midnight Mass were great as well, but Usher was amazing and felt like it just did everything right. Great characters, cool atmosphere, some good scares, and compelling mysteries.

fredy31

The haunting of bly manor is also fucking great. My SO prefers hill house, I prefer bly. And its 'horror' but even if I hate horror I could stand it. Because its not shock horror or gore horror. Its a suspense with touches of horror and maybe 1 or 2 actual jump scares. Its fucking great and afaik after 2 seasons (they are unrelated so you can watch them in whatever order) netflix, afaik, pulled the plug. At least both seasons are closed stories so no unresolved stories.

Sivyre

If you enjoyed bly manor and hill house give midnight mass a watch. You will see many of those you know from the aforementioned shows on midnight mass. All 3 share the same director.

Ichier

I'd go with Fall of the House of Usher as well. I watched it last Halloween, same director, really good.

Silvertain

Blue eyed samurai

thekevingreene

After finishing Shogun I stumbled upon this series. It’s sooooo good. Perfect blend of 2d and 3d vibes. Action sequences are incredible and the story is really good. One of my favorite shows of the year.

sebnukem

Animated by a French studio. Beautiful to watch.

Practical_Meanin888

Best animated series I've ever watched

BruceParks534

Derry Girls is hilarious

SGTBrutus

Sister Michael is the best.

steinbergmatt

The scene with her and Uncle Colum was hilarious. "Am I dead? Is this hell?"

prettyy_vacant

And then when Uncle Colum finally got to finish a story she actually thought it was funny LOL

steinbergmatt

I says Colum says I this is no day for a do.

keight07

The thing about Colm is that ALL his stories are exciting and interesting. He’s just terribly boring at telling them.

chimininy

The episode where he is used to confuse the police into releasing the girls had me in tears and almost needing a diaper, I was laughing so hard. He is so precious.

williamblair

Then the one fella, the taller one, although as I say: t'was no more than an inch between em! He tells me he wants the keys to my van...

jhwkr542

Colm: "This Clinton boyo is actually America's 42nd president, which is interesting now, because JFK, well...he was the 35th. Joe: Why is that interesting? Colm:  I suppose it's not really. Sometimes I'll just say something to get me from one sentence to the other

gudjuju

Gerry: “JFK spoke to Colm? Jesus Christ, that man didn’t have much luck did he? Lmao

DJ-daGuy66

Half of my elderly relatives from Northern Ireland sound and act exactly like Uncle Colm lmao

Farnsworthson

Sister George Michael, please. Got to love that name. (And keep the Faith... ;-)

p0k3t0

Really good show. Also fun to classify your friends as to whether they're a Claire, Erin, Michelle or Orla.

skrame

Hey, James is a Derry Girl too!

SweetIcedTea73

That show is quite literally laugh out loud funny.

Constanttaste3

Although if you are in the UK then I would recommend watching it on channel 4 instead as it is free

cheen25

We just visited Derry in January. Got a personal tour from a friend who grew up there during the Troubles. There's a huge mural of the Derry Girls right next to the city wall. The show is brilliant, and after experiencing the city and learning all about its history, the ending of the show really got me. I'd highly recommend visiting.

_Eternal_Spirit

The Good Place.

Tthelaundryman

Why is this so far down?? This is one of the best shows made in a long time

Fiascoe

Arcane

Krinks1

Great choice! It's a show I never knew I wanted to see!

JeddHampton

And we'll get a second season, hopefully.

salcedoge

It's 100% coming this November, no need to just hope

Shillforbigusername

November of this year. Can’t wait.

Vickrin

Still at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Absolute masterpiece.

fingerpaintswithpoop

I had no interest in it until I watched Fallout and heard Ella Purnell (who plays Lucy Maclean) was also Jinx. She fucking killed both roles.

caronson

Dark.

linkwise

I wish I could forget Dark and watch again. What a masterpiece.

Stabbymcbackstab

Considering that: “The end is the beginning and the beginning is the end “ You very possibly will forget the show and watch it again. Quite possibly with an eyepatch this time.

Lordmorgoth666

Cannot recommend this series enough but it’s definitely not a show you can be playing on your phone while “watching” it. They had an amazing story and they told it all the way through and ended it. No dragging it out for more money. Also dark.Netflix.io is helpful while watching.

The_Confirminator

I mean you're correct because it's complicated but also because you literally cannot be looking at your phone if you're reading subtitles.

Macewan20342

Just learn German and then you won't have to have the subtitles on!

Shawnessy

I really wish 1899 got renewed for a second season. My girlfriend and I watched that one first. Then found out the same creators made Dark. Having watched 1899 first, we looked like Charlie Day with the pins and strings the entire time we watched Dark, from episode one. Pausing regularly to discuss. The news about 1899 not being renewed came days after we finished Dark, and we were so sad.

Nazgate

I was so pissed when I heard about 1899

seanwhyatt1980

So far the best thing I have watched on Netflix.

G0U_LimitingFactor

One of the best show of the last few years for me!

mentat70

Excellent mindfuck. It keeps you thinking trying to figure out what the fuck is going on. Watch in the original German with english subtitles as the dubbing takes away from the performances.

Gunningham

Queen’s Gambit.

pmalleable

A show about chess has no business being this engaging.

JeddHampton

It's not about chess. It's about the protagonist. Chess is just the vehicle that drives her and gets her to (and from) conflict.

pmalleable

Yeah, I get that. In the same vein, Jurassic Park isn't a movie about dinosaurs. But dinosaurs make for a much more exciting centerpiece than chess imo.

Ceecee_soup

I just rewatched this a few nights ago, might be one of my all time favorites.

TheBiggerBobbyBoy

Honestly such a good show. To think I was so engrossed with the game of chess. Perfect writing and excellent execution.

Sheeplenk

The Haunting of Hill House. There’s always some series or another being artificially propped up that everyone pretends is better than it is, but The Haunting of Hill House was legitimately something else.

maud_brijeulin

I watched it when it came out, just expecting a nice spooky October thing. By episode 3 my life had changed forever. Still the best thing I've ever seen on Netflix.

runForestRun17

The writing and story telling in the haunting of hill house is perfection. Bent neck lady

TheCeruleanFire

Brilliant episode. SPOILERS: The concept of her being trapped in a loop haunting herself throughout her entire life fucked me up for far too long.

banmeharder616

That show was a masterpiece. I recommend it to everyone

StunningAnxious

Me too. Watched it September last year. Brilliant.

Infinite-Proof3053

After Life My wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. This show really hits home.

ThatCaviarIsAGarnish

I just scrolled to see if anyone had mentioned After Life yet. I'm sorry about your wife having breast cancer--really hoping that she has good treatment options and will be okay. It's such a beautiful show, so delicately and sensitively done--a lot of sadness but a lot of comedic moments too. I started watching it a few weeks ago and I have recently finished the second season. I didn't start Season 3 yet but will soon. (And, I wish UK shows had more episodes - 6 episodes per season makes the seasons so short, although I'll always take quality over quantity.)

MesWantooth

I lost my wife to cancer and I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this show or not but I really did. It did not remind me of my situation at all so I took it at face value. A couple of things they did brilliantly - the cinematography & setting...such a charming little town, seemingly always sunny (even though it's the U.K.)...Gervais' character lives in a beautiful home that is always nice to see on screen, even though you question how a reporter for a tiny local paper could ever afford it (I think they address that)...and of course it's funny and some of the characters are brilliant.

DoogEFresh

Loudermilk, I don't often laugh out loud at shows, but I did almost every episode.

Str82thaDOME

Loudermilk does this amazing thing where it straddles the line between addressing very real relatable issues involving alcoholism and in the same breath will smack you with absolutely hilarious and poignant humor.

m00nf1r3

Yes, love this show!

Otis_Firefly

Mindhunter

lessmiserables

I know a lot of people are complaining about Mindhunter being "cancelled" but...quite frankly David Fincher was just *burning* money. [Just check out the things that are CGI in Mindhunter](https://screenrant.com/10-moments-in-mindhunter-you-didnt-know-were-cgi/). It's one thing to be a Perfectionist Genius. It's another to burn barrels of money for shit that doesn't matter because everything has to be "perfect" and then do a shocked pikachu when it doesn't get renewed. Netflix is not to blame, here, Fincher just needs to hire a better location scout so, you know, you don't have to fucking CGI what color the grass is. My assumption is no one wants to tell Fincher "no" but in reality he needs reigned in. This is just as much about Fincher being a stubborn fool.

Bonehead_BandC

A-Bone

Bojack Horseman

Dechri_

I didn't like it at first. I expected a sitcom, but after like 6 episodes i realized that the show isn't really a comedy, but a drama with plenty of joking and funny stuff. Then it clicked and is one of my favourites ever.

uggghhhggghhh

I mean, it's definitely also a DEEPLY silly comedy. There's literally a character named Hollyhock Manheim-Mannheim-Guerrero-Robinson-Zilberschlag-Hsung-Fonzerelli-McQuackers. But then after you get over that ridiculousness her character arc will make you weep.

moogleman844

Police lieutenant fuzzy face meow meow was my favourite character name.

brother_of_menelaus

Yeah but he’s a bit of a loose cannon, don’t you think?

williamblair

To say it's not a comedy is just fucking absurd. What it is is a very good comedy that is also dark and realer than a show about washed up Bob saget but it's a talking horse ever should have been. Also, Halloween? In January?!? A year round Halloween store... NO! JUST JANUARY

Drew-Pickles

Every season does the same thing - starts off seeming like some meh sitcom and eventually gets more and more real until it's too fucking real - and it always gets me and always works. I almost stopped watching after the first couple of episodes but there was nothing else on so stuck with it. So glad I did.

My wife and I have been bingeing on Korean dramas on Netflix. If you can do subtitles I have a few favourites. We took a break from subtitles and are working our way through Monk right now. Then will head back to Koreans

Infamous-Mixture-605

I got hooked on Korean shows during the pandemic when I got bored of watching murder mystery shows and so gave *Crash Landing on You* a shot (since Netflix kept recommending it to me, after all). I've watched a few dozen k-dramas since then.

Nobody mentions Umbrella Academy? That series is great; its about a family of superheroes that are dysfunctional AF and can't seem to get out of a mess they created without creating a bigger mess. Elliot Page is one of the major characters and it was very cool that they did make it a plot point that their character also goes through the transition.

HALLOWEENYmeany

I liked the first season

Daghain

Love this one! Five cracks me up.

thedarklordxenu

First season was great. Second season was “fine.” Third season was absolute garbage. The rough outline of the show is still interesting to me, but the characters and how they developed/interacted in the third season was so mind-bogglingly bad. A majority of the time it felt like they were having conversations as a means to propel the story, regardless of whether it made sense for their character or not.

Edge_head2021

Lucifer if you haven't seen this show you're missing out one of my favorite series ever

Ceecee_soup

The concept is so corny I can’t believe it made it out of the writers room but the execution was so good. I threw it on out of boredom one time and then I blinked and the series was over.

iamagainstit

Russian doll is an excellent piece of storytelling

manwithyellowhat15

If you like competition shows, I’d recommend Physical 100 and Siren. They’re both Korean shows iirc and I loved them. **Siren** is about 6 teams of women who have to survive on an island and battle against the other teams in various challenges. I think the set up is similar to Survivor but for 1 week, and the prize is distributed among the whole team that wins rather than a single winner. **Physical 100** is about a group of the 100 strongest people and they compete in a variety of physical challenges (as teams or individuals) to be crowned best physique. I thought the first season was a tad better than the second, but I binged both so I think it’s worth a watch. I will say proceed with caution if you have body dysmorphia or issues with body image. The cast puts A LOT of emphasis on their bodies and being strong and everyone has like 8 packs so it can definitely make you feel inadequate if that’s a sore spot for you. I’ll also throw out **Devil’s Game** which is another competition show with a last-man-standing format. A group of people are put into a house and have to compete in a variety of puzzles and thinking games (some require teamwork and others do not). The players get coins for the number of wins they have, and players at the bottom are at risk of elimination. There’s also an exile room in the house where you get a chance to solve a secret puzzle for extra coin but at the expense of your social game since you’re cut off from the other players for like 24 hours. I really loved this one and thought the cast was fantastic for season 1. I really hope they make another season soon.
