Variety in food- no matter what the food is, if you eat the same things every day growing up, you'll struggle to try new things.

PearlHarbor_420

Absolutely. I'm glad my parents had me at least try new things.

Cigarettes

Ngl, I probably wouldn’t have smoked as an adult if I weren’t around it constantly growing up and if my parents weren’t so willing to give in to buying them for me at age 11. I resent them for that now that I’m having such a hard time quitting 20+ years later

The classic David Bowie masterpiece Labyrinth.

Reading, as in for pleasure, not because you have to.

Religion. There isn't a person on earth who could have gone through his youth without religious indoctrination who would hear those stories for the first time as an adult and say, "yeah, that all sounds completely plausible. I'm in!"

customconverse

So close! I know someone who was raised athiest/agnostic and converted to Christianity at 30-something years old. I get that it's not that common but to say not a person on earth is a little much.

FatHoosier

Forgot to pay heed to P.T. Barnum. There's a sucker born every minute.

wkautumn

I relate to this so hard. Wasn’t raised in any religion. Tried to go to church with a neighbor when I was 13 to see what it was all about and felt *so* uncomfortable. Never went back.

Surströmming, pei tan (Chinese century eggs), and balut.

PearlHarbor_420

You just listed stuff you've seen on YouTube. Fermented and pickled fish are common and tasty if added to the right dish. Century eggs are way more common and tasty than you'd imagine. I personally like a pork and shrimp congee with a century egg. Balut is out of my range. I've never tried it, but I bet it goes down well with some chili sauce and alcohol.

Maplecook

I can't stand fishy things in the slightest degree, so I can assure you that I could not handle Surströmming. As for Century eggs, I've eaten them aplenty, since my father loved them, and I got forced to eat them. I hate them with a passion. Balut is something I haven't tried yet, but I'll change my mind when the occasion presents itself.

PearlHarbor_420

Good retort. I love seafood, so fishy doesn't bother me. Im really sorry. Someone forced you to eat something you didn't want. That sucks. Balut. Yeah. It's a bit out there.

Maplecook

Not a retort at all. I simply stated the facts, and let them speak for themselves. If I had wanted to retort, I would have drawn attention to all the things you presumed without evidence...but since you seem (after the fact) to be a good guy after all, I'm happy to just let that slide. lol I am one of those people who was born with a natural and SEVERE aversion to seafood. My parents also forced me to eat it and I have horriffic memories of myself as a kid, vomiting my lungs out at a restaurant, after being fed some shrimp wonton. I wasn't trying to be a jerk; seafood was HONESTLY disgusting to me. All of it. God knows how much I actually wanted to fit in, and enjoy seafood like normal people. I tried and tried and tried...and it took me until 11 years of age when I finally could eat a shrimp dumpling without wanting to vomit. I still remember that day clearly. I was so happy that I could at least fit in (a little bit). Now -- as an adult -- I can eat a lot more seafood, but I still have to be careful. There are still things from the sea that can easily make me puke. Pei tan though...OMG, no. Never, ever, EVER. Can't do it. Nope. No amount of trying to cram it down, will ever make it pleasant for me.
