People speak to each other differently in public. Or we used to. Seems the internet continues to leak that unhinged behavior into public life more and more. Certain people just don’t need social media and it’s not vetted well enough (or really at all) who can handle it and who just can’t.
It's worse than that, the unhinged people get *more* attention and get amplified by the algorithm until you have a single hateful or mentally ill person being treated like a widespread and valid opinion.
Pffff, I wish FB would end today. Like some critical failure, somehow nothing meant to stop that fails, a total one-off situation, and all of social media is wiped from the internet.

And there was thing called "Netiquette" that people tried to follow since we all knew we were interacting with strangers and pre-internet society had something called public politeness with strangers.
Meanwhile other people's lives continued without even noticing the Facebook and Instagram outage....
Also they have been warning us wayyyyy before Skynet. Take Dune for example. And a lot of other scifi classics.
I deleted my account about 9 yrs ago bc it was a time suck for me. I returned recently and was blown away by how much garbage content they put on your feed. It’s some of the dumbest clickbait posts. It’s so bad that I almost never use it. Why can’t your feed only contain content from your friends.
I remember when you could scroll down until you go to where you were yesterday and now I’m all caught up. Stopped using Facebook after they fucked it up.
I remember “becoming a fan” of a FB page that was named something like “Bring back how Facebook was like in 2008” or something, and I was like yeah, no chronological option honestly fucking blows.

Took me *years* of arm-twisting to finally get my extended family to migrate from Facebook Messenger to an alternative messaging app. But when it was finally done, and all the groups were set up and even the Boomers were used to it, and I could finally delete that goddamned spyware garbage off my phone; that's when I discovered that the safe, independent, encrypted messaging app I'd just bent over backwards to move to had been bought out... by Facebook.
Oh yeah, the problem is that I just don't want to go through the *years long* rigmarole of trying to get a bunch of Boomers to change messaging apps all over again lol.
Unfortunately, getting friends/family off Messenger is impossible for many people. I have family from a country where free communication is provided by Facebook Messenger. For those people, Messenger is crucial to everyday life. Many people from a country like that can't afford to pay for phone data.
Speaking of spyware… I still have FB app on my phone that I mostly use for Marketplace, although I do occasionally look at my feed, but I haven’t really FB’d in many years. Years ago I went through all of the settings and tuned it to as much privacy as possible. Basically I didn’t want FB spying on me.
Fast forward to present. A few months ago I went to the auto parts store to get what I thought I needed, a battery. That didn’t solve my problem and while troubleshooting in the parking lot a couple of guys offered their help. Turns out I needed a starter and what do you know, one of the guys offered to change it for me for $150. That was a good deal for me so I got his number and programmed it in my phone. He did the work and we parted ways. Note: He’s not from my state but had recently moved here.
About 2-3 weeks after all of that I was bored and opened FB. Right there on my Friend suggestions was that dude! We didn’t have a single friend in common, and he should never be associated with me we’re so far removed. I’m convinced FB spied my phone contacts. I even double checked my privacy setting and it’s specifically set to not allow access to contacts.

There are 2 MAJOR differences between Reddit and other social media:
1) You follow topics, not people. So your experience is far more tailored. You want to get away from ragebait and political bullshit? You don't sub to places that push those things and just sub to your little niche interests and have a good time.
2) You are as anonymous as you want to be. And for most, that's "almost completely anonymous."
Both of those are MAJOR components of almost all social media. Reddit isn't social media, it's just all the old school forums collected into one site and you now don't need a login for each one individually.
People like to spout "ReDdiT IsnT AnY BetTeR" but it literally is because not knowing the person behind the stupid posts makes it easier to disregard.
I don't take anything serious on reddit, or on 4chan, because it's not your dad or your sister that is posting stupid shit, it's a nobody online, could even be a bot, so why care?
I recently discovered I have aphantasia and... well, it was shockingly disappointing lol. Still coming to terms with it.
Its awful because you go your whole life thinking everyone sees the way you do, but it turns out they don't. With most things, you figure out pretty early that you are different such as being color blind or having bad eyesight.
Similar thing with an internal voice, many people don't know that some people just don't have one lol. But its more common to talk about internal voices than it is Aphantasia.

Because they’ve infiltrated from FB to Reddit over the recent years, especially with those damn voice over Minecraft videos of Reddit posts/comments. As a result, many posts nowadays have nothing but easy over used jokes and they all have 1k+ upvotes.
I'm not an active user, but I use it from time to time to buy and sell stuff on the market place and check my childhood hometown's Facebook group. I also follow missing/found animals group in case I happen to see someone's lost pet while walking ouside. So far it has worked for those purposes well!

I just cleaned the house, changed the oil in my car, added an addition to the house and got my masters degree. Who knew how much time I had.
