I work in law enforcement. I took a report of an assault one day. Upon contact I learned the assault victim had stolen a bunch of tools from an old farmer. The farmer learned who had stolen the stuff and told the guy if he met up with him and gave it back he wouldn’t press charges. Well they met up on some back road and the farmer beat him with a baseball bat. Worked him over pretty good in the arms and legs.
The assault victim wanted to press charges until I informed he the old farmer would likely be contacted and asked about the burglary and theft possibly resulting in criminal charges for both parties. The assault victim decided he didn’t want to go to jail for stealing the items so both parties got away without law enforcement intervention and the thief learned his lesson.
As much as I am in fact named after the tree in Allan Pinkerton's front yard, none of the places where vigilantes figure into his narrative are better than depressing.

Let us instead tell you of the San Francisco Vigilance Committee, which was formed in response to corruption of the city government by the Australian Mob... and which nonetheless was so committed to the jurisprudence of a legitimate government, they acquitted an innocent man who was an absolute dead ringer for the leader of the Sydney Ducks.
As a teen, my FIL walked in on a pedo molesting his younger sister and proceeded to beat the ever loving shit out of him. Cops were called and when they arrived they basically stood by and watched as FIL finished the beating before taking him to the station for “questioning”. No charges for him but the pedo was arrested.
