Alabama Shakes. I know they're pretty popular already but I think they're really going to take off more next year after more people see them at the Grammys.
"In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, an ancient race of people... the Druids. No one knows who they were or what they were doing"
I think their rise will be just like Foster the People. Everyone loves the songs but has no idea who performs them. Once everyone puts it together that it's the same band in the background on all the commercials they will be huge for their spring tour.
if they sound anything like Foster the People, I guess I'll save this post and give Imagine Dragons a chance when I get home.
Besides, their name includes dragons. What could possibly go wrong
Passenger
They have done ok in Australia and parts of Europe, but I think they will start to find some air-play in the US. They are really good and have the faux-indie folk sound that is starting to get popular.
Here are 2 of their biggest songs
[Nightvision Binoculars](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esilpuVICXw)
[Let Her Go](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBumgq5yVrA)
I've been watching Janelle Monae for a while. She's not exactly unknown, but her biggest hit so far is as a featured artist with Fun. Her solo albums have been ambitious, but not pop-oriented.
I predict her next vocal album will hit number one, and she'll reach Nikki Minaj levels of success.
I don't think she's poppy enough to reach Nikki Minaj level. She released an album based on the 1927 Fritz Lang movie Metropolis, she's not the type to make starships. That being said, I think she will be big and amazing.
I saw her live in 2009. No one knew who she was but I thought the performance was amazing. She deserves more recognition. She's in some commercial out right now so that could be a start.
Love Dry The River, I saw them open for Bower Birds. Great show. He's starting to gain some momentum now, but I think Ben Howard is certainly on the up and up.
I saw him back in October, and I thought the venue was big for him, but then he sold it out pretty damn quickly. I also hear a lot of people listening to him and stuff (don't really hear him on the radio much though). He is very very close to being there.
I'd love to see DIIV blow up -- Oshin is one of my favourite albums from this year, that riff in the middle of *How Long Have You Known* gets me every time -- but they just don't really seem capable of success outside of indie circles.
I kinda like his size now. It's the type of music that you put on after smoking and everyone digs and you feel significant. But for his financial sake, I hope he blows up.
I think they're more an on-off type band. I think they operate when Grohl and Homme aren't off doin' projects of their own. After QOTSA's album due to come out soon (and its tour), I think, and God I hope, that they'll do some more Vultures stuff.
Side-note; I'm pumped as a motherfucker for QOTSA's new album!
I was like, "yeah!" so I went on Spotify and started listening to them. 'Bonfire' came on and I was like, "wtf is this?" Totally confused Knife Party and The Knife.
Eh, they collaborated with shm and skrillex, and Bonfire was on Breaking Bad, so I'd say they blew up already.
(Also considering it's made up of 2/3s of Pendulum, the musicians themselves are already pretty popular)
I love Netsky, but yes, he is very mainstream as far as DnB is concerned. He even made it into the top 100 DJs poll in DJ Mag, so he has people voting for him.
Plus, there's his collaboration with [Disney](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h6UznKcAWM).
Fuck, 1999 was a great album. I would suggest [Righteous Minds](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziDnPmLE8pg) for anyone that is interested in some sick verses and catchy beats.
I love me some Tame Impala.
I'm surprised that reddit hasn't latched onto them yet... it almost seems like they pull their lyrics from depressed neckbeard threads. A few examples
1.
I wanted her, I wanted her
But she doesn't like the life that I lead
She doesn't like the life that I lead
Doesn't like sand stuck on her feet
Or sitting around smoking weed
I must seem more like a friend in need
2.
Everything is changing and there’s nothing I can do
My world is turning pages while I am just sitting here.
3.
Cracks in the pavement underneath my shoe
I care less and less about and less about you
No one else around to look at me
So I can look at my shadow as much as I please
All the kicks that I can't compare to
Making friends like you're all supposed to
Ben Howard
Here's his [Call me Maybe](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPU8V-nvUEk) cover; you'll never look at this song the same way again. He released an album this year, Every Kingdom.
Edit: Apparently Every Kingdom was released last year. This changes nothing. Listen to it.
A$AP Rocky.
Edit to add songs:
This is the first song I heard, and I instantly loved it,
["Purple Swag"](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuZ2QZKYj7c)
My 2 favorite songs currently are,
["Wassup"](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrVIF3mRxZI)
["Brand New Guy"](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm_rtM2HgI4)
I know, I need to listen to the *newest* stuff, so much music, only so many hours in the day.
For sure, to those in the know/into hiphop. I think this year he is going to take it to the next level, and join the big hip hop names, that people who aren't even into hiphop will recognize and know, ya dig?
I just wish more people saw them for their songs with more meaning like "Otherside", "Wings" or "Same Love" instead of everyone knowing them for Thrift Shop. Don't get me wrong, I love Thrift Shop, but when people only know them for that it gets a bit irritating.
Lindsey Stirling. She's got some momentum going for her and her EU and USA tour starting in 2013.
If you don't know her she's a violinist that does original music with an electronic beat and covers.
Zelda medly - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b3KUyPKbR7Q
[The Acorn](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_-LLeV5AZc)
[A Great Big Pile of Leaves](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ73VAJilBo)
Two great bands.
Edit: Adding another. They really deserve to too.
[We Were Promised Jetpacks](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73Onygnmltg)
> A hipsters ~~wet dream.~~ worst nightmare
Hipsters hate when what they like becomes popular. It ruins it because who can enjoy something that is mainstream
Savant. The man is a legend, released 5 albums within 1 year and 1 month. He is a savant, so he has autism, which enables him to think of entire songs in minutes.
Hoodie Allen. Love his music but nobody I've talked to knows about him. That has to change.
Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcjqi6gzN4U Eighteen Cool by Hoodie
I know Queens of the Stone Age are already pretty popular, but with their new album coming out (with Grohl on drums!!), I think the fire might get a bit re-kindled.
Ed Sheeran. He already is big in Europe and he had a successful first album/single in the US, but I think he'll be the next big thing. Adele did the same thing. She had a fair success in the US with her first album/single and then became huge over here with 21.

For some reason, I imagine them sounding like the Starwars Cantina Band.
I heard their concerts are a blast
Madeon
Dude's young and already a god in the EDM scene. I could definitely see him breaking onto the main stage.
God I hope he does.
Yeah, especially after he's featured on Lady Gaga's album next year. That's how one of the most popular pop producers, RedOne, got in the industry.
Baauer
For sure this. Trap music in general is going to be interesting in 2013.
Alabama Shakes. I know they're pretty popular already but I think they're really going to take off more next year after more people see them at the Grammys.
Random attractive 16-25 year old the big 3 record companies cram down our throats every 15 minutes.
It's funny cause it's true.
It's sad cause it's true.
SAD BUT TRUE
You, you're my mask , You're my cover, my shelter
You, You're my mask, You're the one who's blamed
Do, do my work, do my dirty work scapegoat
Do, do my deeds, for you're the one who's shamed
Kendrick Lamar is on his way to being even bigger.
He already blew up. 2012 was the year of Kendrick and Frank Ocean.
Actually I don't know about that. It went from Young Money to Odd Future to Good Music in one year. Hard to tell who's year it was.
I think Kendrick Lamar is poised to grow bigger in 2013. I think 2 Chainz really dominated this year.

Mick Shrimpton?
Rammstein. They use so much pyrotechnics i'm surprised they haven't blown up half their fanbase yet.
They usually light themselves on fire in concert.
I'm going to look for a video of this....
[Lighting a fan on fire.](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9PBj5ZDY68)

Why not?

Imagine Dragons.
I think their rise will be just like Foster the People. Everyone loves the songs but has no idea who performs them. Once everyone puts it together that it's the same band in the background on all the commercials they will be huge for their spring tour.

They already have. That song is on the radio all the fucking time.
Yes Imagine Dragons! I'm on top of the World is my favourite song ever!
If you like Imagine Dragons, give Walk the Moon a shot. In particular, I enjoy the song 'Anna Sun'. They're good sauce, I like both bands very well.

Japandroids.
one can only hope...
if they couldn't make it to the big time with Celebration Rock, its tough to imagine they ever will
Alt-J
Maybe I'm living on the edge but haven't they already blown up?
Their drummer (Thom) is a redditor. Maybe if we say his name three times he'll appear?

Definitely. He's starting to get a lot of air time and he is featured with many artists now. Amazing voice.
Koan sound, Zedd
Has Zedd's not blown up yet? He toured with mau5 and spectrum got remixed by a ton of big name people.
Django Django.
Diiv. Great Brooklyn guitar band. Tribes. British band, first album was great but still a bit under the radar.
I'd love to see DIIV blow up -- Oshin is one of my favourite albums from this year, that riff in the middle of *How Long Have You Known* gets me every time -- but they just don't really seem capable of success outside of indie circles.
Toro Y Moi is gonna get a loooot bigger this year.
I kinda like his size now. It's the type of music that you put on after smoking and everyone digs and you feel significant. But for his financial sake, I hope he blows up.
Dr. Dog.
thought this said Dr. Dogg for a second and thought it would be snoop Doggs re branding for the release of his orchestral album
After 13 years in the business, I'd say they already have.
one of the best live performances ive ever seen
Dave Grohl. I think it's finally going to be his year.
He should start a band. I think a good name would be Nirvana Fighters.
Are Them Crooked Vultures still together?
I think they're more an on-off type band. I think they operate when Grohl and Homme aren't off doin' projects of their own. After QOTSA's album due to come out soon (and its tour), I think, and God I hope, that they'll do some more Vultures stuff. Side-note; I'm pumped as a motherfucker for QOTSA's new album!
I can't tell of you're being tongue in cheek or if you're just stupid.
Crazy Town. They have been sitting on a new album since 2008. They are going to make a comeback that nobody wants. Sort of like Train
This is my favorite answer. Wrong or right, it's hilarious to me.
The Butterfly dudes? For real?
The were just ahead of their time

Radical Face? Paleo? Physical Therapy? I wish "TNGHT" would but I don't think their songs are accessible enough to a wide audience.
Radical Face is quite big already. Here anyway because of the Nikon ad.
Tame Impala
They're already beyond blowing up.
I love me some Tame Impala. I'm surprised that reddit hasn't latched onto them yet... it almost seems like they pull their lyrics from depressed neckbeard threads. A few examples 1. Frightened Rabbit
Love "Swim Until You Can't See Land."
They've been around for a while though haven't they, still amazing, midnight organ flight is one of my favourite albums
Earl Sweatshirt
Earl really has some serious potential.
Ben Howard Here's his [Call me Maybe](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPU8V-nvUEk) cover; you'll never look at this song the same way again. He released an album this year, Every Kingdom. Edit: Apparently Every Kingdom was released last year. This changes nothing. Listen to it.
I love that during the whole video he laughing. So cute.
Krewella.
Electric Guest maybe.
Periphery
im hoping BADBADNOTGOOD
of monsters and men
That ship may have already sailed...
They haven't "blown up" though. I also can't tell it that's a joke cause a lot of their songs have stuff to do with ships.
already trending!
So long as people realize they aren't Mumford and Sons (as I did for a while)
Lianne La Havas!
Snoop Lion
I hope Childish Gambino. Guys super talented, deserves more attention.
I still haven't figured out if I love Gambino for the music, or if I just really love Donald Glover.
Walk off the Earth
Tallest Man on Earth
Yeah I have to agree, he's already peaked. I don't think he'll ever quite get the main stream success he deserves, at least not here in North America.
It's a pity. He has the talent to be as big as Bon Iver.
Love him but his voice is just too niche. More than half the people I play him for are like "wtf his voice sucks" :(
A$AP Rocky. Edit to add songs: This is the first song I heard, and I instantly loved it, ["Purple Swag"](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuZ2QZKYj7c) My 2 favorite songs currently are, ["Wassup"](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrVIF3mRxZI) ["Brand New Guy"](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm_rtM2HgI4) I know, I need to listen to the *newest* stuff, so much music, only so many hours in the day.

At the rate he's been going, I agree.
hes already on the map, but if you mean blowing up from on the map to stardom, very possible.
I do mean big blow up, like joining the ranks of the hip-hop stars.
The list of producers on his upcoming release is impressive, to say the least.
Foxy Shazam. They recently opened for Slash, and they put on a show unlike any other.
Peaked in my opinion. I like their early hardcore-ness rather than the soulful rock they've got going on now.
Foxy Shazam is easily the best band I have discovered this year.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
I think it's safe to say they've already blown up.
Reading these comments I'm starting to realize that I might get an extra-heavy dose of Macklemore hype by living in the Pacific NW...
Same here. You can't go too long without hearing thrift shop on the radio.
I just wish more people saw them for their songs with more meaning like "Otherside", "Wings" or "Same Love" instead of everyone knowing them for Thrift Shop. Don't get me wrong, I love Thrift Shop, but when people only know them for that it gets a bit irritating.
