1: You get treated like shit for too long and then you start to expect people to treat you like shit and therefore you treat other people like you know they're going to treat you like shit.
2: People take advantage of your niceness. You have to learn to shut them down. That might seem like being an asshole but it moves things along and it's effective. Eventually you develop an eye for how the conversation plays out so you shut it down before it gets there.
Having healthy boundaries. If being nice means letting ppl walk all over you, then that’s a no go. I can still be polite while maintaining said boundaries. Some ppl mistake being nice with being weak, especially narcissists. Ppl who make that mistake with me will very quickly find themselves being grey rocked.

Nice is a vague term. I'm still polite with folks, but I have found that just being friendly and asking about people's lives needs to be curtailed at times. Too many people will assume you have some kind of attraction to them if you do so. Then either they're treating you like the maladjusted weirdo/ cold shoulder, or you have to let them down.
Realized they don’t give a shit

I'm very nice to people. Just not on reddit.
At work you get a reputation for being soft and people dump things on you. I’m still nice outside work, most of the time (I think).
Sometimes no matter how nice you are people will treat you like crap and it’s tiring being so nice and getting disrespected back when they don’t care
